True genius.......2006-04-18
The number of stars won't say anything about Hassid's playing. His heritage consists of these few tracks but those 8 pieces stand as a reference and the Beauty that speaks through his violin, is the size of Universe.
Words are powerless to describe what makes Hassid's voice so speaking, so organic, so effortless and so true. The violin speaks with such simplicity that it touches deeply. At this point, virtuosity does not describe Hassid's art. There is not an inflection of the bow that is meaningless or just a filler. Everything is meaningful, natural and intelligent. "La Capricieuse" under Hassid's fingers becomes as important as a major concerto. These pieces are a must hear for anyone who really wants to understand the essence of what music is all about. Measuring anyone else with the Hassid yardstick offers you the best chance to spot true musicians...
Five thousand stars to you, Josef!
Well, very cool collection.......2006-03-10
Amazing that Ginette Neveu is mentioned only casually in all of the reviews below. She DID beat David Oistrakh, the "king of violinists" at the Wieniawski violin competition. Her playing is of the top caliber.
In any case, this disk is interesting as both a historical artifact and as a wonderful recording. It is a good sampling of Hassid's lush playing, but doesn't begin to cover Nevau's carrer. You can get her recordings elsewhere.
Another brilliant violinist who died young, Michael Rabin.
Pathos and beauty luminate in Hassid's complete recordings.......2005-11-20
I have grown up listening to many, many violinists, but was never exposed to Josef Hassid until a few months ago, after watching the "Great Violinists of the 20th Century," a documentary. Hassid was mentioned briefly in the section of the film devoted to child prodigies--a short clip of Achron's Hebrew Melody (which is on this cd) played in the background as a black and white photograph of Hassid slowly faded out. The Melody was so haunting, tragic, and passionate it convinced me to look into this young violinist who died from a brain operation in an asylum.
I was not disappointed. Hassid's only recordings here are beautiful beyond words, and nearly perfect--the Humoresque is enough to bring tears to your eyes, while the Kreisler pieces are played with empathy and a suave sort of urgency; the Tchaikovsky piece is gorgeous--Hassid sings with the violin like no one I have ever heard. The dynamics and rubato of his interpretations are so natural and emotional it is almost hard to believe he was 16 years old when this recording was made. Personally, Josef Hassid is my favorite violinist of all time, and this includes Perlman, Heifetz, Menuhin, Oistrakh and anyone else. I base this opinion on these 8 or so tracks.
Neveu, another tragedy, is good as well, although her playing is not of as high a quality as Hassid's. Some of the repetoire presented is, however, very interesting (for instance, the Chopin transcription). But this cd is more a beautiful and tragic testiment to a brilliantly gifted young man, whose name, if things had been different, we might have recognized as easily as Heifetz or Perlman.
Wow.......2004-11-07
Hassid plays like an angel- what a awful shame he didn't live longer. These recordings made when he was a teenager reveal an extraordinary artist. His tone is out of this world, and he plays with such pure style and sincerity. Neveu's playing is also excellent. Buy this CD.
Only second to Tossy Spivakovsky..........2002-01-29
Spectacular playing, only second to the vastly under-rated Tossy Spivakovsky, especially playing Sibelius' Violin Concerto.

Delightful Spanish Dances.......2005-11-06
I had been listening to some very different types of music when a friend offered to lend me this CD of Enrique Granados' (1867 -- 1916) "Twelve Spanish Dances" performed by Spanish pianist Rosa Torres-Pardo. The CD was a welcome change of pace from my more usual and more solemn listening. I have heard these dances before in concert but not on CD, and I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with them. Rosa Torres-Pardo was entirely new to me. She plays these works with elan and high spirit. This is a budget CD and a fine choice for those wanting to get to know Granados.
Granados' music straddles the late 19th -- early 20th century, with the Spanish Dances dating from 1889 when the composer was 22. They are arranged in four books of three dances each. The Dances are frequently arranged for the guitar and other instruments, but it is good to hear them on the piano, the instrument for which they were composed.
This music reminded me of the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, with its guitar-like strumming, echoes of castanets, strong and varied rhythms, and lightness. The music also reminded me of the dance sets of Brahms and Dvorak, written at almost the same time as these pieces, and sharing their popular appeal and nationalistic celebrations. Yet, these pieces by Granados are a delight in themselves, and shouldn't be analyzed as much as savored and enjoyed.
The pieces are written in different dance forms. Some of the dances took me away to long, hot romantic evenings while others are flamboyant and lively. The first set of three dances includes two flashy outer pieces, "Minueto" and "Fandango" surrounding a much more plaintive haunting middle dance, "Oriental". The second set includes the most famous of these dances, "Andaluza", a strongly rhythmical piece, together with a flowing, pastoral work "Villanesca" and a brief finale "Rondalla Aragonesca", which gradually increases in intensity and includes a song in its middle section. The third book of dances begins with a bouncy "Valenciana" followed by a work with alow singing theme in the treble and strumming rhythms, "Sardana". The concluding "Mazurca" is a flamboyant showpiece. The final book of dances opens with a famous "Dance Triste" . The second dance, "Zambra", the longest of the collection is a snappy, rhythmical piece, and the final light "Arabesque" reminded me of Spain's Moorish heritage and of Robert Schumann's piano work of the same name. The CD closes with a shimmering, impressionistic piece, "Estudio" published after Granados' death.
Listening to these dances brought home to me again the variety there is in music and how much joy there is to be gained by exploring. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to hear the Spanish Dances in depth and to try to communicate something of the music to those who might like to hear it.
Robin Friedman
An album to live with.......2004-10-18
Excellent sound, expressive playing, and music much of which has entered the standard repertoire - and even when it hasn't and you are hearing something new, these are novel and compelling compositions. You can't lose with this one.
Convincing interpretations of great music.......2002-09-15
Many people know one or more of Granados' Spanish Dances. They sound terrific on the guitar: you would think that they had been composed for it. But Torres-Pardo's performances should show that they are firstly piano pieces.
You will probably recognise several of the dances, especially the fifth and sixth. But each one has its own distinctive character, and they sound wonderful when they are heard as a set.
This bargain-priced CD has first-rate renditions of the dances, and is unreservedly recommended.

Album Description
A recording which I am proud to have produced in a little monastery church in the north of Spain, less than an hour from Bilbao... The music is really performed well and as far as I know is counter tenor, Carlos Mena`s debut recording. Carlos is currently working with that famous of famous Spanish musicians Jordi Savall. I hope whoever reads this takes the time to at least check out a few tracks....
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Performances. Strong similarities to France and others in Europe.......2005-09-22
`Danzas Medievales Espanolas' and `Calamus, The Splendour of Al-Andalus' are both performed by the Eduardo Paniagua Group which, I believe, is based in Spain. Both albums were recorded at the Monasterio de la Santa Espina, Valladolid, Espana and both ensambles of musicians are lead by Eduardo Paniagua, although there is some difference in the personnel between the two albums.
Andalucia is the most southwesterly province in Spain and therefore the one under control of the Moors for the longest time. The latter of the two albums specifically offers us music of `Arab-Andalusian Music of the 12th to the 15th centuries', after which the Moors were kicked out of Spain by Isabella and Ferdinand. As I listen to this specifically Arab music, I hear virtually nothing which tells me that it is music performed in Spain. It is certainly old, but not too different from the Arab music I hear on Sunday's on my local NPR radio station. You can almost hear the influences of the Levant which are shared by both Arab and Israeli musical styles. I am constantly looking around to find the sources of all the clicks and rattles as I do my gardening with Walkman in full throat. Turns out, it is all from the rich family of Middle Eastern percussion instruments on this album. Looking at the names of the tracks, they too all seem to be in a Latinized spelling of a Middle Eastern language.
The first album of Medieval dances with largely the same instruments and a very similar ensemble sounds quite different. This music is quintessentally European Renaissance, with strong similarities to other recordings of Renaissance music by French, English, Dutch, German, and Italian influenced performers. The titles to these pieces have a much more pronouncedly Spanish look to them. Some even seem to be titled in Latin, which seems odd, but maybe not that odd, as the two strongest influences on popular music through the ages is dance and liturgical (nee gospel) music. So, one shouldn't be too surprised to see a little Kyria slip into the vernacular.
One thing which really impresses me is that while western music has changed so much over the last 6 centuries, the Arab music sounds so much like it does today, and yet in the 15th century, it sounds a lot more sophisticated than the native European music.
I highly recommend both albums, but if you are really on the lookout for `something completely different', go for the Arab music of Al-Andalus!.
synergy of sound and culture.......2003-12-30
This recording stands out as the best in a growing range of CD's of medieval Iberian music, which mixes Arab, north African, and European themes. The music itself is spellbinding. There's nothing else quite like these songs' melding of sounds and tempos from early European and African/Arab instruments. But it's also true that Paniagua and friends are super interpreters, setting a wide variety of moods that all get resolved by the end of the CD, for a satisfying listen.
The repetory artists get from this period is both rich and overplayed--the common appearance of the Red Book themes in recent recordings a case in point. That makes intelligent interpretation crucial. The distinction of Paniagua's group is their truly new renditions of common tunes with the addition of deep skill in contemporary north African music. Purists might look askance at the way the CD intersperses modern Bedouin and Arab instrumentals with the ancient Andalusian songs. Yet many of the old songlines that migrated into Spanish Muslim society never got transcribed, certainly not in later European texts, making modern plugs essential to a complete recording. Now, in other hands, it would be Orientalist of the artists if they were suggesting that north African music hasn't changed significantly in over seven hundred years. But I think the group decided that some continuities--inside north African music, among Meditteranean musics--(1) merit being recognized and argued today, and as a result (2) give hope for building conversations that defy seemingly irreconcilable divisions of Africa from Europe, Christianity from Islam.
So what might make this CD stand out best is its subtle take on the culture, or politics, of this genre of recordings. Paniagua's group does far and away the best job I've seen of explaining, through the music itself, why today's north African and Spanish artists want to make it come alive again. National leaders and major media like to tell us that Islam and Christianity repel like opposed magnets, that they form separate "civilizations" that inevitably "clash." This music suggests that history tells a different story. More importantly, the effort the artists take to play it suggests that the present also deserves a different story. The music is both harmonious and dissonant, suggesting both the troubles and the promise that emerge in a truly heterogenous society, especially when people embrace a mixed culture. I get inspired to do that work when I hear how it happened in the past, or how people try to create new links in the present.
