Album Description

The incredible DJ Jazzy Jeff presents the second installment of one of the best loved hip hop compilations of all time. The legendary first volume of Hip Hop Forever was mixed by Kenny Dope of Masters At Work fame and now DJ Jazzy Jeff is set to raise the bar with his star-studded collection. Classic hip hop, hard to find jams and new favorites are all represented and mixed as only DJ Jazzy Jeff can. Hip Hop Forever has commanded respect from hip hop heads old and new, the series' UK launch party in 1998 was hosted by hip hop legends Marley Marl and Pete Rock.

After releasing his amazing artist album The Magnificent in 2002, it was inevitable that we would present to the world DJ Jazzy Jeff's first official mix CD. Those of you who saw DJ Premier, Grandmaster Flash, Kid Capri and DJ Jazzy Jeff's tribute to Jam Master Jay at the BET awards last year will remember how Jeff received a standing ovation. It is this uncanny ability to move a crowd coupled with unprecedented turntable wizardry that is captured on volume two of Hip Hop Forever.

For the collectors, this very special installation of Hip Hop Forever will be available as a mixed full-length CD as well as in limited edition, un-mixed 2xCD. Regardless of which format you choose, sit back and enjoy a fine mix by possible the greatest hip hop DJ of all time. A great mix of old, new, classic and fine obscurities from artists including: Nas, Raekwon, Cypress Hill, Pete Rock, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest and Jaylib.

4 out of 5 stars I got blind sided by this.......2006-04-16

I was completely thrown off gaurd by this album.Who would of thought that the Fresh Princes dj could put together a sick album like this. The man can dj people. The line up is sick and the cutting is above par. This is an official mixtape. This is not a compilation people.Peep the samples of the tracks he used.Check out his execution on the tables.Albums tight.Cop it

5 out of 5 stars The Foundation!!!.......2006-04-01

If you are new to hip hop music or just wanting a great hip hop compilation, this LP is highly recommended. These are essential artists/songs to check out. Especially, when ya have one of the illest DJ's mixin' & chopin' it up.

4 out of 5 stars That Raw Boom Bap (4.5 Stars).......2005-07-27

Jazzy Jeff has long been my favorite DJ. I've been following his work since '86 and it does my heart good to hear cats like Jeff still tearing it up. The tracks all range from the early to mid 90's and includes various bangers and some of them are pretty obscure like the "Can't Stop The Prophet" Pete Rock remix or O.C's classic "Times Up". I really don't have to go into much detail. Just look at the track listing, it speaks for itself. You already know how Jeff flawlessly blends tracks, so the rest is a no brainer.

The only flaw (if you can call it that) I could find on the album was the fact that some of the songs were censored (like "Made U Look"). It was a small distraction, but a distraction nevertheless.

Hip Hop Forever Vol. II is more than worth owning. If you haven't heard it by now, quit cheating yourself and buy it. Jeff has been my favorite since day 1 and he has yet to let me down.

Standout Tracks: Electric Relaxation, How Many Emcees (My Favorite), Times Up, Buck 'Em Down (Beatminerz Remix), Braggin' Writes, Made U Look, Square One, Can't Stop The Prophet (Pete Rock Remix), Live At The BBQ, and Words I Manifest

5 out of 5 stars True Turntabling.......2005-05-09

Excellent comp from J the man who invented transformer scratching. As well as a first class line up the mixing in this is second to none. Never heard scrathing this mad on a CD.

The man deserves twice as much acclaim compared to Will Smith as he isnt a sell out and keeps it real.

By this CD and get educated!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Only the Philly Heads Would Understand.............2005-05-06

Once again....Jazzy Jeff has proved he is the best Hip Hop DJ in the world. From listening to this CD to seeing a live set in Philly, he educates a crowd like knowone else.

5 out of 5 stars SPM Str8 Outta Hell!.......2005-11-07

I like how South Park Mex represents his Neighboorhood calling it "The Land Of Hell" instead of Tha Hood or El Barrio, in which SPM raps about tough street life in the neighboorhoods of South Park, Hillwood, Reveille Park & South East Houston, TX. Mary-Go-Round is a laid back song about Carlos Coy's girlfriend Mary Jane, about smokin' on some Dank! South Park Mex's Screwed & Chopped Music is a diss to him because his voice is tight, man!

Hustle Towns best are 1, 2, 3, *4, 5, *6 & 8.

5 out of 5 stars !!! EYE FO AN EYE, TOOF FO A TOOF !!!.......2005-05-05

SPM TEARS IT UP ONCE AGAIN ON THIS ALBUM. FOR THE MOST PART, EVERY SONG THE SPM CREATES, IS YET ANOTHER GATEWAY INTO THE FIERY HELL HE CALL HIS HOOD. BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM IN MY OPINION IS RIDDLA ON THA ROOF, BUT EVERY TRACK HOLDS ITS OWN ON DIS ONE TO FOR ONE MEAN, HOT OFF THE STREETS ALBUM THAT'LL GRAB YOU FROM THE MINUTE YOU PUT IT INTO YOUR STEREO. IF YOU HAVENT HEARD THE MEXICAN, THIS IS A GOOD ALBUM TO START WITH.

5 out of 5 stars righteous rhymes and strong beats.......2005-02-02

Hurricane G's clarity, vision, and talent is striking. Admittedly, if you're looking for gimmicky or easy listening hip hop, you'll be disappointed. However, if you,re looking for righteous rhymes informed by feminist and pro-black politics and supported by an underground groove, this is the album for you.

    1 out of 5 stars A Real Dud.......2002-08-27

I disagree with Talib. Although I am not Latina, I speak/understand Spanish. While her Spanish verses flow better than her English ones, she leaves much to be desired. Her rhymes are choppy and some do not make a lot of sense and it becomes blatantly obvious that she only used a particular word or phrase because it was the only thing that she could think of. Her voice sounds like a cross between Rosie Perez and Left Eye hut unlike Lisa Lopes, though G means well, she comes up very short. At many points during the album I feel almost embarassed for her because of her lack of vocal ability and the elementary level of writing skills. Nice try, but you came up short.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most talented Female rappers.......2001-10-29

Whoever wrote the previous review probably wasnt of hispanic descent, therefore couldnt understand hurricane gloria's lyrics, and doesnt appreciate the underground hip-hop flow.
Gloria has excellent bi-lingual lyrics, bangin' beats that would please the ear of any true hip hop fan.
She has collaborated with puff daddy on the song "enemy number one" which she did in spanish and english. Another collaboration she did was with the cocoa brovaz album, the song is called spanish harlem, and she comes with the RAWEST verses ive heard from a hispanic rapper, even more a lady.

Cop this CD, you will not regret it.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2000-05-19

Absolutely the worst rapper I have ever heard! How she has an album or is on anyone else's album is a mystery to me. She has a terrible flow, wack lyrics and an annoying voice. I wish I could give this album 0 stars.

If you are a fan of XTC, DO NOT listen to this. You will want
to kill yourself. I almost did.
This compilation is the biggest insult to
one of the greatest (and underrated) bands of all time. I don't need to single out any tracks since they all completely suck. With the exception of the hidden XTC track. Think of it this way, no one needed to re-do Michaelangelo's 'David' so why on earth would this have been released at all, except for a big joke. I am not a big fan of any covers of any kind any way (see NIN's sloppy cover of Joy Division's 'Dead Souls'), but these are atrocious. Reading some of these reviews just sets in stone that these authors are not true XTC fans. If you weren't an XTC fan before listening to this, and you like this tripe, don't bother picking up an XTC album because you are musically stunted and are not ready for the real deal.

p.s. And to the writer who stated there are other bands who could do XTC's songs better than them....I say this:
      1. Burn all your music
      2. Shove a pencil in both ears because you obviously don't use them anymore.

      2 out of 5 stars A Testimonial Snack.......2002-03-26

If you're new to XTC, and like other artists better (maybe some that are on this CD) then maybe this is the one for you.
For me, this was a little disappointing. I think too many of the artists stuck too close to the original and didn't try injecting anything of themselves into the songs. But that is the problem with XTC songs, they are so indelibly stamped with XTCishness, it's hard to imagine them being covered.
Granted, there are many singers who can carry off an XTC song better than Moulding or Partridge, but when you've heard the sheer quality of their work, you can't imagine anyone else singing them really.
I am a fan of Sarah MacLachlan, but to be honest, I found her rendition of the song a little bit boring. The songs lyrics can be sung out with either venom or sadness, it seems she did neither, which is surprising because she can be quite melancholy and wistful on her own tracks. She didn't seem to take this anywhere.
Ruben Blades version of "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" is absolutely stunning, and dare I say it, as good as the original. He made this song his own, and he sounded like he cared. It gives this CD authenticity, and is the only track worth it apart from the following . .
The Verve Pipe's "Wake Up" and Terry & The Lovemen's "The Good Things". Verve Pipe because they made the song their own without losing what makes the song recognisable as an XTC song, they put enough of themselves in without forgetting that the song is great with or without them.
And "The Good Things" because it's XTC, and it's one of the best things Colin Moulding has written in the XTC canon. He may write less than Partridge, but he absolutely comes up with very observant, life catching songs without being pretentious.

The rest of the songs are a mixed batch -- the strongest being They Might Be Giants "25 O'Clock", which matches the original in sound and texture, but beefes up the solo section a bit, making it a bit snappier and less psychedelic.
And those are the only ones I remember from this disc worth mentioning. Just an opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant concept & solid execution, with a few mis-steps.......2002-01-30

The subtle reworkings of "Earn Enough for Us" and "Senses Working Overtime" are smart interpretations, staying close to the original but being different enough to get (and keep) your attention. The letdowns are limited to 3: Joe Jackson (quite surprisingly!), Sarah McLachlan (it just seems tired and uninspired in this post-Lillith era), and an utterly verbatim chord-for-chord replay of "Nigel" by The Rembrandts. That last one is probably the least insightful, least creative, and most pointless contribution to the overall effort. [Though what else would you expect from an act known only for the "Friends" theme?]
TMBG and Mr. Blades are exceptional, and L. Hux's "Another Satellite" is a transcendent reinterpretation of an already phenomenal & groundbreaking song.
Bottom line: If you like XTC and have an open mind, buy it immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Fine for its particular audience.......2000-08-28

The 'Testimonial dinner' set of covers is smart, well produced, and interesting to people who know the XTC material already. Except Ruben Blades's brilliant rework, most people will find that the artists' original recordings of their own music is fulfilling and that XTC did a sporting job at recording their own work. That is, XTC didn't need the testimonial.

Nonetheless, it's sound listening. The common complaint is that neither Partridge nor Colin Moulding have the voice to carry their songs. If that's so, you will like this varied album.

      4 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2000-03-01

Most songs by quirky rock/pop composer-performers don't survive being covered; If they do, it's often only by slavishly copying the original note for note. But Partridge and Moulding's songs are so strong that they often do very well in other hands.

Some of the songs on this collection don't survive the individualistic treatment; the first three cuts on this album are pretty forgettable. But some are gems. Reuben Blades changes "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" from XTC's Rundgren-produced spy movie theme into a steamy Latin tune. TMBG's"25 o'Clock" is as much fun as the original. Sarah McLachlan's "Dear God" is as good in its own way as the original. And "The Good Things" by Terry and the Lovemen is probably unique in the history of recorded music- a band covering itself!

If you're an XTC fan you'll need this album to complete your collection, of course. If you're not already a fan, buy the XTC originals, but buy this one just for McLachlan's cut.

4 out of 5 stars Little Known West Coast Rap History.......2006-11-30

If you're looking for a pretty definitive sound of the West Coast in the late 90s (especially the Bay/Hilltop area), this is a good album to listen to. It features a couple major acts as well as some local one-hit wonders. Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Dru Down, Rappin 4-Tay (remember him?!) and even Rodney O (of Rodney O and Joe Cooly, another real old west coast group) make cameos. The album came out in '97 and faded into obscurity, but it'll remind you of how the West once was.

While this album was out, the east coast was doing it's thing with their definitive 'boom-boom-bap' beat tracks and DJ mix tapes first coming out, the midwest was still trying to get on the hip hop map, and the only rappers making it out of the south were booty bass groups and Outkast.

¡Me encantó! Mucha frescura, más guitarras que antes... muy buena producción de Juan Blas Caballero y Ulises Eyherabide.
