On this release, Banana Wind, Buffett continues in the light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek celebration of the beach-bum lifestyle that has made him a hero to tens of thousands of his "Parrothead" fans. Combining country-rock and calypso into his signature sound, the singer-songwriter advises all of us caught up in the rat race that we need to "take a holiday, grab a pack, and hit the trail, take a sail, and wind up in some moonlit bay." Early in his career Buffett was able to re-create the tension of everyday life before he released it with considerable gusto in a sun-filled fantasy. These days, however, he seems so out of touch with ordinary lives that he can't build much tension at all, and as a result his songs are so laid-back that they never quite get off the mat. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-06-14
I love "Banana Wind". This is my favorite CD. I think that after you have read all of Jimmy's books a lot of the songs on this album make a whole lot more sense and you can really relate. I also love "Off to see the Lizard", which seems to be very under rated to me. I find all of his music very calming. Very easy listening and it just takes you away to a better place.
His Best Of The Last 20 Years.......2006-11-14
"Wind" is another really strong 90's era album from Buffett. After his mediocre late 80's albums and the lackluster "Fruitcakes" in 94, Jimmy seemed to really get back on track with "Barometer Soup" and "Banana Wind". Some of the best songwriting of his career is to be found on this album that is often overlooked by fans of the Buffett catalogue. I remember around the time this album came out I was sitting in a movie theater and they were playing music over the loudspeakers prior to the start of the film. Usually it is background noise, but this song came on that caught my attention right away. I thought the voice sounded familiar and sure enough it turned out to be the single "Only Time Will Tell" from the then new Buffett album. I don't think I ever heard it again anywhere other than the album, but it is a great song that should have been a hit. There is really only one clunker on the whole album, the song "Mental Floss" that see Buffett trying to be lighthearted and it just comes across as corny to me. The rest of the album is solid with highlights including; "Jamaica Mistaica" which tells the true story of Buffett getting shot at in Jamaica when his plane was mistaken for a drug running plane. "Banana Wind" is a cool and breezy instrumental. "Overkill" has Buffett taking on the music industry with some of the harshest words he has used on disc in years. "Desdemona's Building A Rocket Ship" further explores a character from one of his novels. "Happily Ever After (Now And Then) is another cool little song. For me though, the real highlight of this album is the last song "False Echoes" that was written about Jimmy's father and his struggle with Alzheimer's disease. The song clocks in at over 9 minutes and is truly one of Buffett's most heartfelt well written compositions of his entire career. The song shows just how good a songwriter Buffett can be when he puts his mind to it. For me "Banana Wind" is a must own album for any Buffett fan and is his best studio album in the last two decades.
my review.......2006-11-07
This album is an imaginative combination of older Caribbean themes, and newer music. The album is ten yrs old, but new to me. I have had my interest in current music renwed by this performance. Stick around for the "hidden track". I am a pilot, and this song is "just too damn hot".
Another later career bomb.......2006-08-28
I bought this CD along with Barometer Soup to round out my collection of Jimmy Buffett albums/cd. I can now say I own them all, and as I expected, this one is as bad as "Hot Water". There's nothing new here; the writing and singing are tired and worn out. Pretty bad stuff.
Super fun music.......2006-08-21
Buffet always make you feel like you are in the Carribean, especially the song Jamaica mistaka and dont forget to find the hidden track

Album Description
On their sixth full-length studio release Melt Banana exercise a hitherto undetected area of their musical musculature: the "rock" region. Summing up an entire album, and one as diverse as Bambi's Dilemma, with such a pedestrian qualifier is risky business, agreed, but it seems to fit like never before. The band, of course, refuses to accommodate any such pigeonholing: "Maybe it is rock, but maybe not. We just make whatever we want. We just follow our own instincts!"

Amazing.......2007-06-23
Amazingly bad. I just saw these guys open up for Tool, and I couldn't believe it. I am open to new stuff, I like wierd things, I like non-conformity in music, but you have to at least have some musical talent to pull it off. To, me this band is like Primus, except without the talent. Thier love show sucked so bad, and I expected to hear some smaples of thier studio work and think "Oh, I get what they were doing, myabe I should give them another try," but thier studio stuff sounds even worse. In cocert, all we could hear was the guitar, could barely hear anything else, and could not hear her "singing". That was a blessing, because all she does is yell annoyingly.
I have not listened to a full studio album by these guys, but I think seeing a live performance is an even better indecation of a band's talent and musical ability. These guys are truly horrible. Nothing creative, no talent, pure crap.
A great follow-up to Cellscape.......2007-06-01
This year I have been disappointed by the new releases of my favorite bands (Arcade Fire and Blonde Redhead). Not so with Melt Banana. They have offered up something with melody, noise, punk and pure chaos. In the best Melt Banana tradition! I had wondered if they could equal Cellscape. They have equaled or perhaps bettered it. There is not a weak track on this album.
Can't stop listening.......2007-05-26
This might be the best Melt-Banana record released to date. Although definitely more accessible to the general populace than some of their previous, significantly weirder records, it doesn't mean that it is by any means boring. The straight ahead pop noise sound is complimented by much more mature composition and musicianship. The drumming is particularly notable.
Blank Page of the Blind might be my favorite song ever.
The best MxBx yet!!!!.......2007-05-23
Anyone whose listened to Melt Banana before would know that they never dissapoint. Every one of their albums has been absolutley incredible, and every song is killer. This album is no exception. And in my opinion, the best one yet. Bambi's Dilemma has more of a rock and roll feel this time around, while still retaining those noise rock/grindcore tendencies. Yako's vocals are absolutely incredible, and Aagata(guitar) seems to be playing more actual riffs this time. All in all, if you like Melt Banana, you know what your getting. If this is your first Melt Banana cd, this is where you should start. And make sure you see them live, theres nothing like it.
Different, but great!.......2007-05-14
I'm not sure what it is with people who automatically cry "sellout!" the second a band shows a stylistic shift. This album is a far cry from "Scratch or Stitch" and "Speak Squeak Creak," with its much poppier songs overall, but it's still great. Anyone who automatically throws this out because it's different from old Melt-Banana stuff just obviously does not welcome experimental change.
I guess it's true what the guys from Bad Acid Trip say in "Funbus."
"The craving for new is something to shun,
thinking is bad, it spoils the fun."

Great stuff!.......2002-10-24
Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!
Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26
Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.
Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.
Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.
Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26
A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)
I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

Psychotic Madness.......2006-12-21
I'll confess I can barely understand what Yasuko is saying, but it makes buggerall sense half the time anyway. What matters is that Melt-Banana produce incredibly tight, energetic music, with more inventiveness and glee in one 90 second song than most bands can jam into an album. Charlie is a top contender as one of my favourite Melt-Banana albums, with thefirst four tracks all solid gold. They've managed to marry glorious hooks to all this spastic madness, and the songs here are a little more, um, well I guess you could say "listenable" but that sounds condescending and ridiculous, when compared to earlier stuff.
In any event it's a hell of a lot of fun, provided you like hardcore. If you don't like hardcore or Boredoms or at least the crazier Pixies Songs then you won't like this at all.
Either you'll hate it, or love it........2005-04-17
A lot of people say this is all noise and nothing else. Well it is very loud and does have some very noise parts to it, but that doesn't make it noisy. Everything that can be heard is noisy to some extent. This album is incredible. It is sparatic and full of high energy. It's probably most accessible to fans of Mr. Bungle, The Locust and Fantomas. But people who like that music probably already know about Melt Banana. It can be hard to listen to if you're just getting into the group and trying them out, but it is worth the time in the end. All the music on here is so well executed and displayed, it's ashame that some people don't have the patience to actually try to like something they aren't use too.
Below one star.......2005-01-19
This band is terrible, one of my friends recomended them to me because i like Mr. Bungle, but i cant stand this band. Every member in the band sounds like they are playing their own song all at once. Its just a bunch of noise. And how can anyone say that they like the lyrics, there arnt any, just a bunch of screeching into the mic. and just because i cant understand them doesnt mean that i love mtv popculture, in fact i cant stand it. I dont know how anyone can actually think that this band has talent.
In Response to SMALAK.......2004-10-13
I saw Melt Banana live in support of Fantomas. Almost all the songs they played were off of this and Cell Scape and all the guitar noises were replicated live. If you don't understand the album, go see the show. You will be amazed.
Yes it is amazing.......2004-08-26
This album, like all of MB, is amazing. If you are not a fan of MB ... then uh why are you here?
as far as genre goes, who cares? this is good music, thats the only label it needs.
and if you cant understand the lyrics, please go back to your [insert latest mtv trend/scene/garbage band name here] cd

Finally vinyl on cd.......2005-05-21
This album is sick. Melt-Banana have taken thirteen of their various singles released on vinyl and compiled them onto one cd. How awesome is that. Not only are a lot of the vinyl hard find, but some go for $150+ on eBay. Now you can not only own these more rare songs, but also listen to them on your iPod (if you have one). Melt-Banana is one of the most original bands out there and this cd is must have for fans (unless you already have them on vinyl, you lucky bastard...) You'll either fall deeply in love with Melt-Banana, or you'll hate them, either way, I don't care, I already love them.

Album Description
No wave without the self-conscious pretension, avant garde composition compressed into one-minute-or-less bursts, urgency, intricate destruction, pure glorious abandon. Melt-Banana play the same way that Repulsion, Naked City, The Ruins or The Boredoms all make you want to scream and dance and kill your neighbors. A-Zap. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Ever!!.......2007-06-02
This band is getting better and more creative as they evolve.
I completely recommend this album. Every song is great.
I recommend the new cd also Bambi's Dilemma.
I saw them live in san diego and they were an energetic, passionate and tight group.
the Boredoms as interpreted by the Chipmunks.......2007-04-16
I'm being a little rough on this one. I enjoy noise, I enjoy the Boredoms (mostly, except when clearly NOTHING is being put into the effort) - but I've never gotten comfortable with muppet-like vocals. In this case, very nearly chipmunk styled vocals over what sounds like early 80's west coast American thrash punk.
There's some atmospheric synth pieces as well, and nothing seems beyond worth recording. I wonder what they left in the studio?
maybe it grows on you.
Oh neat.......2006-05-12
Melt-Banana is great, and this album is the greatest. Read the other reviews if you want descriptions of this frantic craziness. This is by far their best album; they pushed things to a new level with more interesting, catchy songs that actually sort of resemble songs, and yet are more frantic and fast than ever. It's the sound of uncompromising compromise.
"Shield For Your Eyes," by itself, makes my face crack wide open with demented glee every time I hear it. You should get this CD.
An incredible record from Japan's noise terrorists.......2006-03-13
I first heard Melt-Banana years ago on John Peel's tiny little 30-minute space on the BBC World Service. Almost as soon as the song began, it was over. And while it made an immediate, jolting impression, it took me a while to get around to trying them out.
Now that I've "discovered" what they're all about, I can say that Melt-Banana is one of the most exciting bands I've ever heard.
Imagine you put on a CD by Rage Against the Machine and accidentally set the player on fast-forward. That is just sort of what Melt-Banana sounds like. They are called noise rock, noisecore, or simply noise. But really, they are a hardcore band incorporating noise and, on this album, traces of techno, hip-hop, and even trance music. And yes, they will draw disses from your buddies that they're a punk band fronted by Yoko Ono on crack. But who cares what they say?
I say don't listen to Yasuko O's vocals as a melodic instrument, but as a percussion instrument. Once I figured out how she fits into the sound, and accepted that her approach is more rap than punk, the more I knew her style is a vital part of Melt-Banana's rhythm. And now I couldn't imagine it any other way.
Truly, the mad scientist of Melt-Banana is Ichiro Agata. He's one of the most original guitar players I can think of, drawing apt comparisons to Tom Morello. Agata can rage full-on, and often does, then he spins up piercing waves of noise. He can also chill out and get subtle, while mixing styles interchangeably, enticing you to think he's "DJ Agata." This guy is a genius of guitar noise, and a really overlooked alt-rock player.
I think bassist Rika Mm' is probably the core of the Melt-Banana sound (the way John Entwistle was with The Who, if you'll allow the analogy). The insane, manic drumming (uncredited here -- apparently MB have chased a few drummers away of late) seems to key off of the bass rather than the other way around.
Melt-Banana likes to operate at breakneck speed, changing gears as fast as an F1 car, using stop-start dynamics in ways that would leave a lot of expert practitioners slackjawed. And somehow, they are just as precise live as they are on record.
Their song craftsmanship has become more refined on CELL-SCAPE. On earlier albums, many of their tracks were furious bursts of less than a minute, hinged on a single idea or direction. What they do here is cram several ideas into cohesive three-minute structures, letting ideas develop further than before. The improved production quality also gives the band more layers of sound to surround the listener with. After demented tracks like "Shield for Your Eyes, a Beast in the Well on Your Hand" and "Like a White Bat in a Box, Dead Matters Go On," it will have you reevaluate those bands you used to think were really intense.
CELL-SCAPE may be the best stuff they've ever put out, and I think they are one of the best-kept secrets in alternative music. They are a great band, and I hope they get their due.
music that matches a manic mindset.......2006-02-04
It's easily their best album. This album tones down the noise and introduces rhythm and melody. Not the barrage of sound and havoc that most would expect having heard their other efforts. Advanced rhythms and a less by the numbers structure to everything softens this up.
This really sets in by the time "Lost Parts..." kicks in and you reallize their genius in turning noise into something with order, turning the familiar into the unfamiliar and back again.
The best way to get into Melt Banana is through this album, and it's likely to stick as most people's favorites
You can even enjoy this album if you're not high :D

Album Description
Ella Guru are an eight piece from Liverpool who sound nothing like any other band from the city. They have produced a majestic debut album full of alt-country loveliness guaranteed to leave everyone who listens to it moved by its greatness. Stand out tracks include `They Called For Us' and `This Is My Rock + Roll'. Banana. 2004.

Safe as Scouser Milk.......2004-08-29
Despite the fact that Ella Guru have taken their moniker from a Captain Beefheart song, they are not wacky or in anyway copy that type of music. In fact I would say that these Liverpudlians tend to lean on the alternative country side. `First Album' (yes, its their first album) is one of the most delicate and fragile records I have heard so far.
`First album' starts off with the Sigur Ros sounding `Noisy Insects' and then segues into the alt-countryish `They Called for Us', and basically the whole tone of the album is set. There is a lot of innovative sounds and despite the mellow atmosphere there is always an expectation to what the next track will offer. I am quite excited with this album because with each listen it gets better and better and its also proves that you don't have to be an American to make authentic sounding alternative country music. Mind you, aving said that Ella Guru tend to mix genres as well on some sounds, like the Jazz inflected `Blues is the Root'. Definitely one to listen to at night before bedtime. A must have.

"Feel the Peel" is a funky meal!.......2005-01-13
The rhythm section remains intact from "Rowdy Duty" with the other most noticeable difference is the absence of Jen Durkin's vocals. But has it really hurt them? I don't think so. This band can find a groove and make it bark like a dog. Go ahead and buy the disc; "Big Thing" is worth the price of admission alone.
Great groove!.......2002-12-21
I have played bass for 20 some years and i loveto listen to these guys! If you are a bass player or any musician for that matter than you need this and all dbb cds!
Feel the Peel - you ain't going to slip on it.......2001-09-19
I had never seen DBB before nor heard any of their music. I bought this out of the blue. Let's just say I was grooving from the beginning.
I understand those other reviewers who were looking for something more traditional from the band - of course, I have no frame of reference.
However, if you want something fun, groovy, movin, and with some variety then this is an album you want to have. Newcomer Hope's voice is like riding on a magic carpet. She delights with everynote and lyric that emanates.
Enjoy!
The Third Coming..........2001-08-10
"Feel the Peel" is Deep Banana Blackout's third attempt at attaining the "funk." This album is hard to judge, becuase those familiar with the band are familiar with their last album, a live, 2 disc concert called "Rowdy Duty." Rowdy Duty showcased the bands improvisational talents as well as their knack for just letting loose and jamming out. This was the band's style for the first five years or so of their existence. However, since the lead singer Jen Durkin left the band, their sound has changed slightly. With the addition of new comers Hope Clayborn(lead vocals and sax)and Brian Smith (trombone), DBB has worked to elevate their sound to the next level. Feel the Peel is a great example of the band taking their great music in raw form and producing it into a proffesional sounding album. However, by doing so, DBB has sacrificed that uncut, unproduced sound that got them to where they are today. Musically, Feel the Peel is excellent and is certainly worth purchasing. If you are used to their older style however, you may want to listen to the album before you buy it.
A step forward.......2001-08-03
Feel The Peel is a step forward for this band. I read a previous negative review of this disc, and I must disagree. I own their last disc, Rowdy Duty - a double-live CD, and it's quite good, but grows REALLY repetetive over 2 discs. I've also seen them live (with Jen Durkin) and felt the same thing. They'll get a good groove going and then basically play a variation of that for what seems like forever. The songs all followed the same basic structure, with little variation. (I assume that their inspiration was found in Parliament/Funkadelic, Tower of Power, and the JB's, but compared to those groups, these guys have a way to go). HOWEVER, this record is a nice change of pace. They are beginning to mix it up a little, and have some latin flavor(Everybody) as well as some much smoother soul tunes (Rocco's Lament) and some nice jazz flavored touches as well (Fire It Up). It's definitely not a sequel to "Rowdy Duty", but what seems like a new direction. Instead of just blaring the horns on every tune and trying to out-JB the JB's they are incorporating various new elements into the (new) songs. It's a very good disc, and I recommend it for those who like soul-based groove music that occasionally rocks. (I couldn't think of a better description...sorry).
