The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.

In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.


In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.

Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.


Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

Chucho Valdés--son of the great pianist Bebo Valdés, leader of the Cuban supergroup Irakere, and a Grammy Award-winning artist--is one of the most acclaimed musicians from Cuba. Trained by Zenaida Romeu, Cuba's answer to Nadia Boulanger, Valdés's Liszt-like technique, sprinkled with dashes of Art Tatum and McCoy Tyner, explodes on the CD's 14 tracks, which includes works by Ravel and Debussy. Chucho Valdés is an acknowledged master of assorted Afro-Cuban musical idioms. The Cuban-born pianist has been recording for nearly 40 years in a wide variety of settings, as both sideman and leader. I love both Latin Jazz and Classical music. I hate 99% of all Classical crossover CD's. I find them cheesy and unconvicing. This album works! Cucho Valdes is a master of theme and variations! He takes the Classical compositions on this CD and re-invents them in a masterful and surprising way.He reworks the Classical pieces in the same way a Jazz artist reworks a standard.He is not reverential, he invigorates these pieces. This is my favorite piano jazz CD.

For all those who have bought "crossover" albums only to be disapointed by lack of technique to pull off the classical side, or a lack of understanding of the original structure on the jazz side, or just a lack of imagination/creativity in general, finally there's an album that does it, and makes you smile in the process. Anybody that has spent hours in the practice room on "mindless finger patterns" wondering how that will ever advance their career, will recognize quite a few references in the course of this CD and smile with the recognition of "well, there's a way"! This is the "fullest" album I've heard in over 50 years of being in music - don't miss it.

This new CD got SUCH G L O W I N G reviews by the "critics" and it sounded so interesting and unusual...I couldn't wait to try it....I even ignored the previews customer reviews...thinking "just must not be their cup of tea". After receiving the cd and listening once I thought just maybe I didn't really give it a fair listening. So I played it several times and each time found it less and less interesting.

The renditions are overly simplified and after a while become monotonous. I was so disappointed in what I THOUGHT based on the publicity was going to be something unique and interesting.

The grammatical incorrect accent on the second "a" of Fantasia should have given me a warning about this CD.
Better title would be "Tormento Cubano"
I had to make an effort to listen up to the 6th track the first time I played it.
Just to make sure, I suffered it to the end on a second playing.
Not even worth returning it. I will spare someone else the pain of even trying to listen to "this thing".
Into the garbage bin it went.

You can still find Alicia de Larrocha's classic late-fifties recording of all of Falla's piano music and transcriptions on EMI 64527-2, in performances marginally fresher than these. But the current disc has several advantages over the earlier recording. One is the glorious sound of a piano in the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, one of America's great concert halls. Another is the opportunity to make the acquaintance of de Larrocha's friend Xavier Montsalvatge, who is still, in his eighties, writing music of great freshness and wit.If you love Montsalvatge's sense of humor, go for the present disc and give up some Falla arrangements. --Leslie Gerber

I don't think the sound is as excellent as Leslie Gerber states, although it's clearly not as bad as on some of De Larrocha's other RCA recordings.

Also, because Larrocha's dynamic range rarely exceeds "forte" the sound is much easier on the ear, and her trademark beautiful tone and feeling for rhythm are transparent throughout.

Everything on this disc is beautifully played and shows why she is the queen of Spanish music. In the Falla items, in particular, she shows some pretty masterful pianism--just listen to the gorgeous (and virtually unknown) "Serenata Andaluza" and the Dance from "La Vida Breve". I doubt that these could be played more perfectly than they are here.

The very difficult Fantasia Baetica is good too, but Larrocha doesn't sound as as easily in command of the notes as on her earlier all-Falla recording on London/Decca (one of my very favorite piano CD's). However, it's still pretty impressive, as are the four "Piezas Espanolas". Again, her feeling for rhythm is one of things I've always loved about her playing.

Like Janacek, it is a great a disappointment that Falla didn't compose more for the piano. I just love his music, and I suspect he could have added to the piano repetory much more significantly than he did.

The second half of the CD is devoted to Montsalvatge. The music is certainly enjoyable, but not as distinctive melodically as the Falla. She plays the virtuosic Sonatina much more gently than in her previous recording.

This is one of the best discs Larrocha has done since she became and RCA artist, and I would recommend it highly.

      Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
      (although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
      This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
      Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
      interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
      Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

      If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

      Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
