Finally, a record label has the sense to reissue folk-era singer-songwriter Fred Neil's three visionary Capitol albums on CD. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1937, Neil was a major fixture on the early-'60s Greenwich Village folk scene. If he's known for anything today, it's for his songwriting (via Nilsson's AM-radio hit of "Everybody's Talkin,'" Jefferson Airplane's manic cover of "Other Side of This Life," or Tim Buckley's lovely version of "The Dolphins"). Neil's songs are remarkable, the sort of ponderous, moody, complex music reminiscent of the best of Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, and Leonard Cohen. His sound was characterized by nimble 12-string guitar playing; the ability to blend Indian, gospel, rock, and blues into folk music; and an impossibly deep, reverberant baritone voice, sort of like Johnny Cash with a midrange, control, and chops. The material on the two CDs that comprise Many Sides was recorded between 1967 and '71 and presents the entirety of Neil's mature work, adding six unreleased tracks and one historically interesting, hootenanny-imprisoned single. Though there are spots of languorous fooling around and stoned goofiness (notably on the lackadaisical Sessions), the takes are mostly grand, the production ranging from inventively subtle to stripped-down live versions. Fans will also want to scoop up the imports of Neil's '65 debut, Bleecker & MacDougal, and his folknik collaboration with Vince Martin, Tear Down the Walls. Last seen in Texas--or was that Florida?--the music world has not heard from Neil since the '70s. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
All about the 'activity'.......2004-11-12
Fred Neil just puts me in that state. You know the one where you think of that old guy in town that would come into the office and ask for "Ayndy". That's what Neil's recording does. He brings back memories of all "questionable activity" that goes on down by the park near the edge of town. Man that old dude could sure write a ton of letters as well. I miss him. Neil's exquisite compositions remind me of that 100-year old freak. I have no idea what he's doin' now. Probably pullin' up weeds in his garden or listening to the 80s station in town or just hanging out at the grocery store sucking down coffee with some other old guys. I hope he still has his health and can walk. Every time i hear fred neil, i miss him.
Careworn & Caring.......2004-10-05
Was it really 36 years ago that I chanced upon Fred at a friend's place on an Elektra sampling of folkies inc. Tim Buckley,& Hamilton Camp? I remember thinking then (as I've thought subsequently of Buckley, Aster Aweke, Aaron Neville & a handful of others - if I could sing with this power, I'd never talk). There's an undeniable careworn quality to Neil's delivery, an appealing, relaxed warmth, that few listeners could pass by. Yes, we regret his reluctance to tangle with the industry side of music, and yes, this has left us the poorer. So savour these rich baritone minutes. But to heed Fred's unforgettable anthem,'Dolphins',savour without nostalgia. Buckley did it proud. So too did Jesse Colin Young. It's really unjust to compare Fred's voice & attitude, but some listeners might find, as I have, Chris Smither's,'Train Home', as a recent echo of Neil. Not that all-embracing, mellifluous resonance, but similarly sweet & resigned (with a stunning re-visit to the 60s political turmoils in Dylan's, 'Desolation Row').
Few could go untouched by such a soulful resonant voice..........2002-01-31
The first time I heard Fred Neil's voice was over ten years ago when my friend Richard dug out his this obscure record album, tipped his huge speakers over on their sides onto the wood floor ("better sound this way", said Richard) and put the needle down. Out of those speakers came the sound of the most beautiful, heartfelt and deep tones of a voice that was at first hard to describe.
When the first song was over, Dolphins, I said how much he reminded me of Hoyt Axton! My friend replied that Hoyt used to hang-out, smoke pot and sing with Fred Neil, and now Fred had melted into obscurity, thought to be living somewhere in Oregon. (...) But to me, at that moment and as I listened to the rest of the album, Fred Neil was re-born all over again. What a voice!
I hope that the rumor is untrue that Fred Neil has died. I know that Hoyt Axton died in '99, but I read a review here that said Fred was gone too. I always had a wish that I would see him play somewhere in some little cafe and would get to hear that wonderful sound live. I wore-out the casette that my friend Richard made for me and was so happy that the record companies had the insite to re-release these Sam Neil treasures!
Remember a lost voice.......2001-07-11
Fred Neil died over the weekend. Those of us who became members of his cult during the mid-'60s with the Elektra classic "Bleecker and MacDougal," have wished for a return after his disappearance from music in the mid-'70s, but it wasn't to be.
In addition to his compelling vocal style, he wrote a few certifiably classic tunes: "Everybody's Talkin'," "The Dolphins," and "Other Side To This Life." They have been covered successfully by other artists, from Nilsson to Beth Orton, over the decades.
To escape his demons--or maybe just to co-exist with them more easily--Fred retired to Florida and until recently was militant about refusing to connect with the music industry or press. The recordings in this set vary greatly in quality, but even when ragged they carry a tremendous folk-jazz vibe. Possessed of a warm, deep voice and a complex, spontaneous interpretive sensibility, Neil belongs in a rarefied class with Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and Terry Callier as a moody writer-interpreter at the nexus of folk, jazz, blues and soul.
Even if you never heard of him in his lifetime, remember him now.
Fred Neil-masterful.......2001-02-15
Collects all his Capital material. Fred Neil possesses a wonderful, baritone voice; his music moves like beat poetry..This along with "Bleeker and McDougal", thankfully available again.

Customer Reviews:
A true legend.......2004-03-19
Johnny Cash was definately one of the best country musicians ever and this cd shows a good sampling of his early work. "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" and "One Piece At A Time" are really great songs. "Ragged Old Flag" is one of the most patriotic songs I have ever heard. "Ring Of Fire" is a classic. I wish this cd included "I Walk The Line" but i'm not complaining. Check out some Johnny Cash today!
The Ragged Old Flag is the most patrotic songs written.......2000-03-05
There is no question that Johnny Cash is one of the greats of country music. There is also no question that this CD has a lot of great Johnny Cash songs but by far the song The Ragged Old Flag is the greatest Johnny Cash song ever. The Ragged Old Flag speaks to the best that this country has to offer.
Johnny Cash at his best, an entire spectrum of his talent........1999-03-17
The title says it best. This album gives a wonderful perspective as to the ability of Cash to sing any song, country, western, or gospel. The best part of this album is the third track, "The Last Gunfighter's Battle," which I have yet found on any other album. It is definately my favorite Johnny Cash song.

A great collection of their music on a CD!!.......2005-04-20
I grew up with this music... and my 2 year old daughter loves it every bit as much as I do. It's actually the kind of music that appeals to all ages.
The arrangements, the harmonies, the blending of 9 voices and 7 instruments... it's a must have!
Uplifting sounds in an often underrated form of music.......2000-01-13
There is no way to adequately describe the marvelous sound of The Serendipity Singers in writing. Their music must be heard (more accurately experienced) to be understood. The group combines the traditional sound of American Folk with the more uptempo beat of early 1960's pop to create a musical style that is their's alone. The selections on this album include powerful ballads like "Sailing Away", the almost frightening lyrical imagery of "Sinner Man", the fanciful comic ditty "Mud", and their biggest commercial success, "Don't Let the Rain Come Down."
There are too many good songs in this collection to mention them all, and these comments cannot do them justice. If you love the sound of intricate harmonies and powerful voices losing themselves in the pure joy of singing, this album is for you. Indeed, The Serendipity Singers have Many Sides, and you'll enjoy exploring every one of them!

Faithful to the concert experience.......2000-08-22
"There are Many Sides to the Night" is a fine recording of a first-rate concert. It's both a good Steve Hackett sampler and a must for any Hackett archivists.
Hackett and accompanist Julian Colbeck deliver faithful renditions of selections from Hackett's solo acoustic work, stretching back to Genesis.
I don't know if Hackett will ever tour in the U.S. again. He did a time or two in the 1980s and I recall that the acoustic segment he played at a concert I attended drew rousing applause. This may be the only opportunity we state-siders get to hear him "live."
Almost all of these tunes can be found on previous Hackett albums and two -- "Kim" and "Horizons" -- are making their third appearance on record. Hackett fans or neophytes will find little new on this CD -- a couple of selections at most, so far as I can tell.
The only serious reinterpretations come on "Ace of Wands," where Colbeck's piano takes the melodic lead in place of the electric guitar part found on Hackett's "Voyage of the Acolyte," and on "Kim," where Hackett plays the melody on guitar whereas the previous two versions feature a flute. What follows are the nittiest of nits:
I wish Hackett had included "When You Wish Upon a Star," from the album "Till We Have Faces," in his concert so we could have it on this CD.
I know that this is a live album and is intended to be a faithful reproduction of a Hackett solo show, but I think the extended applause segments between some of the pieces to drag a little. Hackett announces his "last" song of the night and, of course, after the selection, the applause swells and he comes out for the obligatory encore. And then another. I grew tired of this ritual years ago, but maybe that's just me.
On a relaxed Mediterranean evening.......2000-03-27
What a pleasant surprise this CD was. The previous reviewer is dead-on. This is a wonderful compilation of Steve's occasional acoustic efforts. It is hard to believe that there are only Steve and keyboardist Julian Colbeck on stage. The texturing is so rich. The quiet and humble interludes between songs with mixed Italian and English introductions only add to the atmospheric quality of this CD. Not to be diminished as mood music, this would go well with a bottle of red wine and an Italian meal with someone you love.
Stunning and achingly beautiful!!.......1999-10-17
I found this at Borders at its grand opening in Erie, PA, and scooped it right up. I am still in the midst of my first listen, and must implore all Hackett fans - as well as any who enjoy classical guitar in all its splendor and simple beauty - to pick this one up. The recording is live and uninterrupted. Every song is lovingly introduced by Steve, and he often speaks in Italian to what had to be a delighted audience. This is simply gorgeous stuff.... buy it and indulge yourself!!!

Mixed feelings about this combination.......2006-02-23
These two recordings represent two very different sides to Steve Hackett, and being a two-fer, a good deal if you are adding to your Hackett collection. Steve is an extremely talented musician, guitarist and composer. However, if you're new to Steve, you probably should invest in some of his other recordings. For the classical side, Momentum or A Midsummer's Nights Dream are studio recordings and more substantial (if you like live recordings, try his live CD/DVD from Hungary). On the rock side, the choices are some early Hackett (Please Don't Touch, Spectral Mornings, etc), or very recent recordings (like To Watch The Storms or Darktown). Guitar Noir, while interesting and full of some great guitar work, is from a Hackett period of very high production, lots of synthesis and way too much reverb. Other recordings in this period are "Feedback 86" and the supergroup GTR. Music from this period sounds too "produced" and artificial for my tastes. The rock recordings mentioned above have better compositions and are more musical. Certainly Hackett's recent classical and rock recordings show a maturity, spirit and compositional ability well beyond these recordings.

This a Snapper Recall 2-cd set.And represents two distinctly different facets of Steve Hackett's great repertoire. This is most accessible to those less familiar with Hackett's work, and for the more discerning fan "truly essential." "Guitar Noir" explores themes of "dark recesses of the human mind."The Guitar work can be enchanting and lifting at one moment and hypnotic the next. Hackett's vocals play a stronger part, creating a very nice texture. IMHO sounds like David Gilmour or Bryan Josh vocally. His harmonica playing is superb. The second disc "There are many sides to the night"is in total contrast to the first disc. Hackett plays solo and with the accompaniment of Julian Colbeck on keys. An "unplugged" performance. Recorded live in Palermo,Sicily in 1994, this is a great introduction to Hackett's classical recorded works. He plays a nylon-string guitar that conjures up a light, beautiful and often romantic sound. I have always felt there is a majesty and clarity to Hackett's playing, and that shines through here. Hackett also plays Giuliani,Vivaldi, and Morricone with his style and consumate musicianship.Steve Hackett, to this day, continues to create evocative, sophisticated and perfectly crafted music. In conclusion, these recordings are a testament to Steve Hacketts great skills and devotion to his art. Of course, you may already have these individual albums, therefore, making this purchase redundant. If you don't, hit "buy now" and you will be rewarded. Peace.
