It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David Vernier

Un gran concierto.......2005-07-19

Yo tenia el Cd de este concierto, pero sin duda el DVD presenta la realidad, lo sublime de este evento, porque ademas de ver las interpretaciones, trae varios puntos y canciones extras. Carreras creo que esta bien, saca la tarea. Placido Domingo en Amor vida de mi vida, logra llevar el concierto a su punto mas alto en ese momento, punto superado unicamente por Pavarotti en Nessum Dorma. Pavarotti como siempre sublime como dije en Nessum Dorma, Ave maria y en los popurris. La calidad del DVD es genial, con full screen y sonido digital. Otro punto buenisimo es la aparicion de Frank Sinatra en la cancion My way y de otras luminarias del cine y la política. Espero que este comentario sirva de ayuda para aquellos que quieran este DVD.

The Three Tenors has/have become a cottage industry, churning out one CD after another for every imaginable event and in every combination. This does not mean that the results are necessarily inferior but it does imply a commercial, layman's approach. And maybe this is better - spreading the joys of fine music to the masses. After all, where besides figure skating and cartoons do most people have a chance to even hear opera?

This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.

Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

I am not a regular Opera fan, hoever these THREE are the Best. their songs they sing together are SUPER!!! And the range of NOTES REACHED ARE REMARKABLE. tHE MIXTURE of songs is a treat for all, even if you are not an OPERA FAN!!!! Great show!!!!!!

Not what I thought it was going to be. I like only about 4 of the 20+ tracks on this CD. I shoudl have just bought the DVD instead and actually watched them perform. Much, much more entertaining.

Last Encore of songs missing off C.D........2002-02-06

The Three Tenors are my absolute favourite singers. The 1994 Concert was undoubtedly their best in my view. I taped this live concert from the television, and have played and played and played it!! I also taped it on a cassette, however, when I bought the C.D. I was really disappointed that they did not include the last set of encore songs, which included O Sole a Mio (don't know if I've spelt that correctly), where Placido and Jose try and outdo Luciano!! It received such a fantastic reception from the crowd, (one of the many standing ovations), and really showed how much the Three Tenors seemed to enjoy performing the concert. How come this was not included? I don't know if it was on the Video because I play my own.

After re-establishing her Latin identity with Mi Tierra, her tribute to Afro-Cuban music, Cuban American singer Gloria Estefan made yet another surprising move, this time exploring the music of Latin America, mostly Colombia. What started as a modest, end-of-the-year holiday album became perhaps the most artistically satisfying album of her career. Aided by Colombian arranger and producer Kike Santander (who also wrote most of the material), Estefan explores vallenato (the title track and "Dulce Amor"), merengue ("Tres Deseos"), currulao, a Colombian rhythm ("Farolito," the highlight of the album) and, of course, salsa ("Nuevo Dia"). Not quite as much as "Mi Terra", but I do like this one a lot. Her voice is beautiful on this one, also. A different kind of variety. I'm glad it bought this. Gloria, más español CDs, por favor.

An exciting CD that's not to be missed.......2002-01-18

Gloria's second Spanish release has to be her most exciting (along with 1998's Gloria!) The songs have a very authentic Latin sound. It's almost like she took the last song from Mi Tierra and continued on with the songs on Abriendo Puertas.

The songs have a New Year's and Christmas theme, with messages about starting over, sending good wishes, as well as about just having fun. "Mas Alla" is the softest number, so lovely it brings a tear to your eye. "Farolito" is the most interesting, because of its tribal blend of chanting and rhythmic hand claps.

There are many different Latin and Caribbean styles, which Gloria has written about prior to the lyrics of each song. She tells what styles you'll hear in the particular song, where they come from, and the instruments that are used to get a particular sound.

This one isn't translated like her two other Spanish CD's are. So, even though you may not get the lyrics, the message of loving life is clear throughout the entire CD.

Abriendo Puertas is the second of Gloria's three Spanish CDs, but the last I became familiar with. At first I was disappointed as it seemed less "serious" and "cutting edge" than Mi Tierra or Alma Caribena, but increased familiarity has revealed its considerable charms.

This is a holiday (Christmas and New Years) related album, but not really a Christmas album as such. All the songs are based on Latin dance rhythms and represent the kind of high spirited festival music that is popular at that time of year. This is as much composer/arranger/instrumentalist Kike Santander's album as Gloria's-- he has written 10 relentlessly upbeat, wonderfully arranged songs, inventive and polished to perfection. The details of the songs are quite wonderful, and Gloria's singing is ideal for this idiom.

This is really a great album to put you in a good mood, as well as for appreciating top of the line musicanship. The Gold Star award for the songs must go to "Felicidad", which is just that, and the impossibly infectious "Tres Deseos", (try and play it just once!).

Recognizing that the holiday season really begins at Halloween (and, in some quarters, doesn't end until the Super Bowl), Vince Guaraldi and his record company have wisely assembled the hummable themes from various Charlie Brown TV specials. What we have here is the album's ability to communicate the playful irony and loopy, lovable characters that people Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip every week. Useful for collectors but not the best.......2007-04-08

If you love Vince Guaraldi's music for the Peanuts shows as much as I do, you'll probably enjoy listening to "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits." But as some reviewers here point out, this is certainly not the CD to start with if you're new to this music. I'm making my own compilation of Guaraldi's Peanuts music, so this CD is valuable to me for providing some tracks I didn't have, especially since there is not a lot more of this music on the market other than "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas." However, start with those two soundtracks if you don't already have them. Also, the 1989 CD "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown" on the GRP label, which is music mostly by Guaraldi re-recorded by other artists, is also worth considering. "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits" is good for completing your collection, but 5 of the tracks on it are from those earlier soundtrack CDs, and of the 9 new tracks here, 7 are in mono, some are quite distorted too, and overall the music is not as good. Still, I'd say this is an enjoyable CD, and helps to complete your collection if you've already got "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Vince guaraldi often gets a bad wrap from jazz critics, claiming that his music is soft and not deep enough to be considered great. I couldnt disagree with them more, after thelonius Monk he is the easiest jazz pianist to recognize upon listening to. His playing sings with a sense of joy unlike anybody else. And his best music was written for the peanuts cartoons.
However, this is not the peanuts disc to get. Most of the songs while charming and fun are short and underdevolped, surfin snoopy for example is energetic and catchy, but it sounds like it is just one short riff being played over and over again for 1:30. the songs that will best bring back the Holiday memories can all be found on " A Charlie Brown Christmas". I would also recomend that you buy " A Boy named charlie Brown " if you want even more peanuts music.

Luis Miguel's strong, often serious voice isn't the first you'd think of to breathe life into a succession of giddy Christmas carols and holiday favorites. But the singer positively soars on Navidades, a slick collection of American classics translated into Spanish. He kicks things off with an inspired, big-band take on "Santa Claus Llego a la Ciudad" ("Santa Claus is Comin' to Town"), and the lush arrangement is indicative of the disc's classy, classic tone. Miguel emotes beautifully during "Te Deseo Muy Felices Fiestas" ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas") and "Blanca Navidad" ("White Christmas"). He offers inspired takes on the sentimental "Mi Humilde Oracion" (David Foster's modern holiday gem "My Grown-Up Christmas List") and Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" (an odd, if fitting, inclusion). The best, however, is a brassy, gospel-infused reworking of "Silent Night," complete with rousing chorus and blaring horns. i was kind of skeptical when i heard that luis miguel was going to do a christmas album with english covers translated into spanish, but now i have an album that i plan to play for many christmas's to come.luis has taken these christmas classics and given them his own personal touch, and it works. from upbeat tunes such as " va a nevar" and "santa claus llego a la ciudad" to ballads such as " te deseo muy felices fiestas" and "estare en mi casa esta navidad" luis proves once again his versatility as an artist. Going with the whole big band theme was a great choice for luismi. it suits him perfectly. a definate must own for fans of luis miguel and anyone who enjoys his music.

Just when you think it can't get any better, Luis Miguel singing christmas songs. His classic, smooth voice will make this a classic cd to cherish throughout the years. I wasn't sure if I would like this cd but now I know it is a CD to cherish for years. It couldn't have come at a better time. Christmas songs sung in a classic tradition! AWESOME!!

An "assault" with the best salsa ever produced.......2007-02-28

I had heard very good comments of this production since long ago and, in many opportunities, I was close to get one of those old vynil-made records but I didn't. For more than 30 years, I have listened to hundreds of times songs like "Canto a Borinquen", Traigo la Salsa", "La Murga Panameña" and the song which I like the most: "Aires de Navidad" (far the most famous of all of these group of salsas in my country, Perú). However, it is not the same to hear these songs evenly one here and other there than hearing all of them together, in the sequence presented in this CD. The context of them is really impressive and this makes the difference. This CD is really an outstanding production. The sound recorded is original all along and the presentation of the CD is quite illustrative, accompanied by a small brochure that gives us a good view of the history of these salsas and their meaning as a part of the culture of Puerto Rico. Dear friends, if you are fans of Salsa, buy it new or used but don't lose the pleasure of listen to all this precious music and let you be "assaulted" by Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe and their friens of Fania,no matter if Christmas time has gone..

El mejor album de navidad .......2006-12-22

Es muy raro que usted vaya a una fiesta de navidad en Borinquen y no oiga este disco. Desde el 1972 ha sido consistentemente unos de los mayores disco de ventas tanto en el catalogo de Willie Colon como en el de Hector Lavoe. La combinacion de Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon y Yomo Toro es espectacular. Ademas, la secuela (Asalto Navideno Vol.II) es del mismo calibre.

George Shearing's quintet work is instantly recognizable. His use of guitar (Reg Schwager) and vibes (Don Thompson) closely following the gently swinging lead of his piano work has become a signature. On Christmas, the Shearing Quintet (here rounded out by the bass of Neil Swainson and the drums of Dennis Mackrel) slip effortlessly over the likes of "White Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," and "Let It Snow" with a breezy, light touch. With tasteful solos that extend off the main melody and into more heady waters, Christmas is an entirely enjoyable release and perfect party music. Not uniformly great, but several nice tracks........2002-04-27

I particularly enjoyed the Latin rhythms in "Ding Dong Merrily on High", the 5/4 "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" (although I'm very surprised Shearing's liner notes don't acknowledge the debt to Brubeck's "Take Five"), the reflective "Away in a Manger", and the casually swinging "Winter Wonderland". It's just good, solid jazz -- despite the seasonal tunes, it's worth listening to year round.

A very good holiday CD........2001-12-04

This holiday CD showcases Shearing's light touch. These songs definitely put you in a nice, mellow holiday mood. I really enjoyed the first track, " . . . Merrily on High," as well as "Donkey Carol" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (which smoothly incorporates Brubeck's famous "Take Five" intro). "Noel Nouvelet" is a serene, but melancholy tune, a la Guaraldi's take on "Greensleeves." If you like holiday music and nice jazz, you'll get both from this LP.

Yuletide winner from Shearing.......2000-04-12

This album is a delight. Especially suitable for background music a Christmas dinner party. It's a nice departure from the tired yule favorites in that Shearing delightfully reintroduces us to the holiday chestnuts but does so with new arrangements and wonderful pairings of instruments. This is a must for your holiday music collection.

Classic Puerto Rican xmas carols, be happy!.......2007-01-16

What can I say? Classic Hector and Willie christmas carols... accompanied by the beloved Yomo Toro, renowned cuatro master. For many years these tunes were the most popular xmas music around. Now everyone is doing it to its style and flavor. It has become a part of our cultural history. Anything less that a 5 star rating would be unreal. You'll no toubt find at least one of the three xmas cds in every puerto rican's home.

A jazzy soul Christmas.......2006-12-27

I have plenty of Christmas music, more than I can usually play during the season but this one I never can do without. If you like jazz in the smooth jazz vein, soulful renditions of classics, improvised interpretations, than you'll be in heaven with this disc. There are several tracks that wouldn't be Christmas without hearing every year.Don Grusin leads the way with memorable tracks with his choir infused version of "Angels We Have Heard On High." The melodic yet innovative "The First Noel" by George Howard is reminiscent of John Coltrane in his phrasing at times, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Spyro Gyra is a rocking jumping good time, Arturo Sandoval sheds his latin jazz image for a brief moment on Bb trumpet and piccolo trumpet for a classical music introduction that soon transcends into blistering jazz solos than back into classical melodies on "O Come All Ye Faithful," the soulful voices of Carl Anderson and Patti Austin respectively on "O Holy Night" and "Christmas Time is Here" give the disc part of it's R&B edge. The absolute most sublime songs you can ever hear during the season are on this disc. You must hear "I Wonder as I Wander" by the New York Voices which mesh so beautifully with jazz arrangements and horns that will knock your socks off. Another soulful track is "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by Voyceboxing which features some remarkable female singing. The disc closes out with an amazing performance on harp by Deborah Henson- Conant who gives a Middle Eastern meets Western sensibilities to the otherworldly "We Three Kings of Orient Are." Great music for the holidays that you will enjoy year after year as I have since the early 90's.

No compilation on the market any better than this! I'd buy THIS cd for Spyro Gyra's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" alone!
All 3 GRP CDs are great. And if you can get your hands on it, try a compilation CD titled "Jazzy Wonderland"

Open your ears to some new styling of old faves!.......1999-11-20

I wrote a general review of the GRP Christmas Collections CD's on the vol. I page. My faves on this one are Blue Christmas , which is a new song to me, and Christmas Time is Here. There's also fresh, jazzy treatments of standards. I Wonder as I Wander really comes alive. Highly recommend this CD and the other two volumes.

Wonderful Holiday CD.......2001-12-05

I think this is a very good CD for children and adults. Los Peces En El Rio has a very fun, salsa beat to it. Other songs are very good Spanish renditions of the English songs. I plan to use this CD in my first grade Spanish class and at any Christmas gatherings and I have already had other teachers ask me where I purchased it.

This is a great C.D. for a Children's Christmas program........1998-11-10

We have previewed the C.D. and we loved the music. We are teachers and are planning to use several selections from the C.D. for our annual children's bilingual Christmas program. We wish we had all the lyrics to the song entitled "Blanca Navidad" which is number 8 on the C.D. If anyone is listening, we are desperate and would appreciate receiving the lyrics to this particular song. Our children have previewed this song and want to learn the words for their program but we are stumped on some of the lyrics. Please help us!
