Now that Lil' Kim's third solo outing is upon us, it's fair time to pose this question: is this fly Brooklyn female a legitimate MC or just another media sensation? Well, probably a little of both. La Bella Mafia is a refreshingly uncommercial album that demonstrates Kim's hard-earned mic skills, but the set never really hits its stride. Kim seems to be a woman who favors strong musical partners, yet many of the album's collaborations fail to inspire. Swizz Beats is at his abysmal worst (as both rapper and producer) on "This Is Who I Am" while Kim's cookie-cutter rhymes blindly follow his lead. "The Jump Off" features a hot, bhangra-accented Timbaland track that loses momentum when guest star Mr. Cheeks jumps in. But when it works, La Bella Mafia shines. Just check out "Hold It Now," where Havoc ratchets up the temperature with judicious use of the always-funky Beastie Boys sample "Paul Revere" and Kim rises to the occasion with a performance worthy of her Queen Bee title. --Rebecca Levine

Better Than What People Say (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-04-07
Chances are if you're knocking this album, you never liked Lil' Kim from the beginning. To me, I believed that this is her strongest album (yes, it's even better than "The Naked Truth"...which I have to say is collecting dust in my library). People have accustomed to hearing Kim rhyme about sex, and figured that it was her bread & butter formula for making an album. She actually sounds real good when she doesn't mention sex in here rhymes. Yeah, she does it on and off on this album, but didn't run it into the ground like her last two albums.
When I hear songs like "Hold It Down" and "Can't F With Queen Bee", I believed that she has stepped her lyrics up from back in '96 (although I believed that Havoc's beat really helped out on the former song). A real nice song is when she colabs with former label mate Styles P. on "Get In Touch With Us", and that is actually one of the best songs on the album. Most of the songs, I believe that she sounds angry, and it brings out the best in her. When I hear the album's closer "Came Back For You", knowing she had a lot to say, aiming at a lot of female artists (i.e. Foxy Brown). It's songs like that that makes me like Kim for what she is.
The album's first single "The Jump Off" was real dope and featured Mr. Cheeks. Swizz Beats lays down a nice beat with the help of Mashonda's vocals on "This Is Who I Am", a song that I really like. "Thug Luv" with Twista, is another notable song. And her crew The Advakids rip the song "The Beehive". And lets not forget her remake of R. Kelly's "A Woman's Threat" on the song "Warning".
As for anything bad, there are a few songs I had no feel for. "Can You Hear Me Now" with Missy Eliott I didn't like, as well as it had a horrible beat. And "Magic Stick" with 50 Cent (before they were beefing) is another skippable track in my opinion.
Also some tracks should have been on here. "The Jump Off (Remix)" with Mr. Cheeks and Mobb Deep could have been a perfect addition to the album. And "Whats The Word?" was good and was remixed with Joe Budden, Lil' Shanice and The Advakids should have been on here as well. Thats all the dissapointment I had with this album.
I believe that this is Kim's best album. This is also my favorite Kim album, probably because I don't listen to her other albums anymore. "Hard Core" was average. "Notorious K.I.M." was garbage. And "The Naked Truth" was overrated, thanks to a couple of media outlets (I won't say the names, but many know what I'm talking about). As I said before, if you like Kim, you'll dig this album. Kim had a lot on her mind since her previous album, and would have a lot to say. I recommend that you give it a listen.

Queen Bee Holds The Crown .......2006-08-16
Lil' Kim comes with her strongest material on this album: La Bella Mafia. For the album, she recruited the best of the best and practically the whole album features someone. This is my personal favorite album by a rapper. Here is the track by track breakdown of the album.
1. Intro: An intro, no review available.
2. Hold It Now [featuring Havoc]: This is one of my favorites off the album. The chorus is really good and the ending of the osng features Kim hosting a radio station taking calls. This is hilarious.
3. Doing It Way Big: One of the few solo tracks on the album. She basically tells everyone that she does things big and also pays homage to her mentor: The Notorious B.I.G.
4. Can't F**k With Queen Bee [featuring Governor, Shelene Thomas with Full Force]: THE best song on the album, which samples "Free" by Deniece Williams (which is my favorite song of all time). Kimmie sings and raps on this awesome track. Shelene Thomas does some impressive vocals, Governor does some good singing and the part with Full Force blew it out of the water (love that part).
5. Hollyhood Skit: A skit, no review available.
6. Shake Ya Bum Bum [featuing Lil' Shanice]: A fun song featuring Kim's protege, Lil' Shanice. This is a pretty good song.
7. This Is Who I Am [featuring Mashonda and Swizz Beatz]: One of my favorites because she tells everyone off. Mashonda does good singing for the chorus.
8. The Jump Off [featuring Mr. Cheeks]: The only video for the album, but still a good one. A good single to pick.
9. This Is A Warning: I liked this song at first but now I grew un-interested in this one. It's sort of scary to me, but it's not a bad song.
10. (When Kim Say) Can You Hear Me Now? [featuring Missy Elliott]: One of my favorites because it's a good track to dance to and my favorite part is the third verse.
11. Thug Luv [featuring Twista]: A good song in which Kim does some fast-paced rapping to keep up with Twista.
12. Magic Stick [featuring 50 Cent]: Probably the most notable track on the album because it's so good. There should have been a video (but 50 Cent ruined it by being an a**). The end features Kim at the radio station again and once again it is funny.
13. Get In Touch With Us [featuring Styles P.]: My second favorite track on the album. Both rappers deliver great bars for this one and I love the last verse where they talk about the "Money, Power, Respect."
14. Heavenly Father [feturing "Big Hill"]: One of the songs that I didn't particularly like. I don't know why, but it just isn't.
15. Tha Beehive [featuring Reeks, Bunk S.A., Vee and Saint from the Advakids]: The other track that I didn't like. I don't know why, I just don't.
16. Came Back For You: A really good track to end the album on. The video was unreleased but I think it should have been. She insults both rivals Foxy Brown and Eve.
Queen Bee delivers one of rap's best albums ever. She does quite a number of guest stars, but that's all good. No one does like Lil' Kim.
Big mama got REALLY BIG FOR REAL.......2006-07-05
Big Kim just got outta prison today and she put on a few hefty pounds. Good luck fittin in those bathin suits to use sex appeal to promote your albums fat a**. Also wit the exceptions of hold it down and the jump off this album sucks.
4.5 stars. Better than 'The Notorious K.I.M.'.......2006-04-29
After her semi-dissappointing sophomore album 'The Notorious K.I.M.', Lil' Kim gets back on the right track with her third album 'La Bella Mafia'. Once again, she reps Brooklyn and keeps Biggie's memory very much alive, and this album also contains songs deeper than those of her previous two albums. And she proves that she can stand on her own two feet without Puffy. Definitely three times the charm with this album!

Customer Reviews:
oh boo-hoo, bad press.......2006-11-18
This is music of 'ndrangheta, in Calabria, not the mafia. Stereotype? Take a walk through some of the towns in Calabria. You'll see music is unnecessary to promote this 'stereotype'.
How about the Communist/Jewish mafia of den Haag with its tentacles in Rome and everywhere else?
Songs of the Bad Life: Part 2.......2006-01-11
This CD is Vol. two of: La Musica della Mafia: Il Canto di Malavita, any collector of Mafia related items will find this a welcome addition to their collection. This paticular CD I believe stands on it's own, along side the first volume and is as good as that volume. As noted in my review of the previous CD, this music is best enjoyed with a fine wine, a traditional dinner, and candlelight. It is beautiful music and sets a wonderful mood.
Earthy and Raw.......2004-04-07
When I first played this CD through, I did not like it near as much as Vol 1 Il Canto di Malavita. The song selection seemed weaker and the singers less polished than on the first compilation. So often does a follow-up to a surprise hit fail to live up to the listener's expectations, that I nearly resigned myself to putting this on the shelf and letting it collect dust.
Instead, I took a different tack and decided to listen with new ears as though I'd never heard the first volume. Once I'd done that, I found a lot about Omerta, Onuri e Sangu to enjoy.
To begin with, the music here is earthy and raw. It reminds me a lot of the folk music of many lands. I can hear strains of Greek, Spanish, Arab, and even Argentine musical influences as it plays through. My favorites are Ninna Nanna Malandrineddu, a mother's song urging her son to vengeance; Tira La Pinna, the mournful gypsy-influenced song of a condemned man; A Casanza, a rollicking guitar-driven tarantella that relates the story of a prison power struggle; La Me Galera, the story of a wrongfully imprisoned man that has an Argentine feel to the music; and Si Gira e Si Revolta, the melancholy story of a man rotting in his cell and yearning for freedom.
About the only negative here is that there are too many short pieces and "parlati" which clutter up the CD and give one the impression it is longer than it is.
If you liked Il Canto di Malavita, then come to this with an open mind and give it a chance, too. If you have heard neither "Il Canto..." nor this CD, then buy them both and try to listen without comparing them. You will be glad you did.
Very good music...but very bad image and stereotype!.......2004-01-08
Beeing a sicilian and an ethnomusicologist I can say that the music recorded on this cd is of a QUALITATIVE LEVEL and REPERTORY which ARE EXCEPTIONAL,I decisevly though don't like the terrible stereotype of the image of Sicily only connected with the criminal world, there is a lot of more interesting and beautifull things to focus on in this land than the mafia.
For example what about the mafia in China,Japan,Russia,Albania,or even...the USA!
I really don't agree with the TITLE of this cd,the connection of these wonderfull sounds with such a terrible criminal stereotype is highly harming,in fact, the sicilian culture as well...
Lisen to the music...and please forget that Sicily is ONLY mafia,it'not true...and it's not any badder than many other"civilised"places in the world.

A classic case of truth outweirding fiction, the story of La Musica Della Mafia is sure to prove at least as interesting as the lively and deeply traditional folk music within. In a nutshell, this is the music of the Calabrian Mafia in Italy, played by its members for its members--frequently at parties celebrating milestones like someone getting out of jail--and chronicling the often vicious behavior of the Mafioso. Il Canto Di Malavita (literally, "songs of the bad life") has, until now, been deeply underground and it remains thoroughly contentious in Italy. Apart from the violence detailed in the lyrics, detractors argue that it glorifies those who live outside the law. While that may be true, the music's historical and cultural significance cannot be overlooked. Ditto its appeal among the Mafia-obsessed in North America. The disc's 18 musical tracks (there are also six spoken-word parts) range in style and sound from rollicking accordion-juiced corkers to brittle, haunting laments, all delivered acoustically, quite possibly from a cobblestone courtyard just past midnight on a languid August night. Non-Italian speakers will enjoy the music's simple Euro vibe and vivid sonic textures. Anyone who speaks the language will marvel at its blunt references to murder in the name of honor. Artifacts seldom come this loaded. --Kim Hughes
Album Description
A controversial album of Mafia songs banned in Italy, La Musica Della Mafia, on the German-based Piasa label, features 18 songs of 'blood, honor and discretion'. The record is not glorifying or romanticizing anything. The songs are part of history and the words are based on codes that are 100 years old. Several songs are laments based on words written by Mafia members in prison and the CD includes two recordings by Fred Scotti, the only Italian singer bold enough ever to perform Mafia songs in public. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Songs of the Bad Life.......2006-01-11
This CD is a wonderful addition to anyones collection of Mafia related items. The songs are sung with an emotion that as one reviewer says comes right from the heart. The true value of these songs comes from the cultural and historical background that gave birth to them. A nice bottle of wine and a traditional meal round off the listeners enjoyment to this CD. I would suggest the Second CD in this series as well: Vol 2, Omerta, Onuri E Sangu, By "La Musica Della Mafia"
1st Generation .......2005-09-13
I don't know what I was expecting but the lyrics gave me the creeps. I'm from L.A. and it was like hearing some local gang singing about their latest drive-by shooting and glorifying it. I thought the singing voice was mediocore. I am glad I bought it used.
Great folklore in South Italian dialect.......2002-12-22
A rare glimpse into the dying world of the Calabrian mafia, this CD is endlessly fascinating to those of us who grew up in Sicilian or Southern Italian households and heard stories similar to those in the songs of honor, revenge and sacrifice. Of course knowing the dialect will help any listener appreciate the full meaning of the lyrics, but even those unfamiliar with those terms that appear in almost every song, such as'sango' for blood or 'onore' for honor, can appreciate the wonderful contrast between the harshness of the lyrics and the melody of the songs. The counterpoint and complexity contained in these songs reflect the complex societies from which they come, raw, real and emotionally honest.
Background purchase.......2002-11-20
This Cd is hardly overwhelming -- I can't imagine why people feel compelled to give 5 stars.
It is beautiful music. However I don't listen to this CD nearly enough to consider giving it more than 2 stars. Buena Vista Social Club gone Italy this is not. Even if you love the Sopranos, you're probably not likely to go ape mad over this CD.
It's a nice CD to have in your collection, but I fear it's going to gather more dust than airtime on my player.
Can't get any better than this.......2002-11-05
This album is interesting in a great number of ways. First, it's one of those rare quality recordings available outside Italy with folk music from Calabria. Second, the performances are outstanding. The singing sounds like it has sprung from the performers' heart rather than being just a flat interpretation of the music. I imagine that one doesn't necessarily need to understand the lyrics to appreciate this music, as a matter of fact, at certain point one may wish not to know the subject of the songs. The words reflect a world unto our own where a different code of laws reigns supreme and which exists in a dimension most of us would not want to explore except in works of fiction such as Mario Puzo's novels. The lyrics speak of a ruthlessness of spirit which is somewhat disturbing, but this is counterbalanced by the quality of the music.
Finally, this will be a treat to those who speak Italian and always wanted to have some exposure to the colourful dialects of the south. Although a few tracks are in Italian, you can hear plenty of Calabrese, a dialect derived from Latin, Arabic, Greek and French.

Customer Reviews:
MEMORIES!!.......2002-10-10
This CD makes me think of falling in love as a teenager.
I gave this as a present to my fiance, who is a "white guy" and I know he'll enjoy it. The songs are just great...full of emotion...and universal in theme. Made me cry to listen to it after ten years!
Good to the last song!.......1999-07-31
I personally own this cd, but just listening now brings back warm memories. These were the songs I first fell in love to. I definately recomend this to EVERYONE. Even if you don't understand spanish, just simply hearing the emotion in Oscar's voice is enough to set you free of worries and lets you soar with the music. Although their music as a group is coming to an end, the music will not end completely. And even more so if you have this memorabilia. I truly recomend this. You can hear the talent, that has come from experience and hardships, pouring out of this band . I say, if you can, buy all the albums. You'll enjoy hearing the changes they've made over the years.
