Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
We’re grateful to have played all kinds of music for hundreds of audiences during the past five years, including a brief tour to Cancun and Merida as part of the “Merida 2000, La Capital Americana de la Cultura” celebration. And we’ve especially appreciated performing songs made famous by some of the world’s greatest Latin composers. En Fuego is an Ashanti milestone. In these tracks you will hear—for the first time—our own music in our own voice. We hope you have as much fun listening to these original tunes as we had breathing life into each of them.

About the Artist
Ashanti’s beginnings date back to 1983 when Berklee College of Music students from Mexico, Switzerland, Chile, Japan, and Connecticut launched a new musical project. Their Latin jazz combo, dubbed Ashanti to recognize the African roots of the music they loved to play, performed regularly at a variety of Boston-area clubs and concert venues, and even appeared on the local CBS and NBC affiliates.

In 1984, Ashanti relocated to Cancun and enjoyed steady work in the city’s finest hotels and clubs for eight years. The group was resurrected in 1995 when the Mayor of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico invited the Ashanti to perform a celebration concert in honor of the historic city’s 453rd anniversary.

In 1996 and shortly after being named Director of Jazz Studies at Central College in Iowa, founding member Gabriel Espinosa introduced a handful of local “gringo” R&B and jazz players to the sensuous Latin music he knew so well. Since then, the latest incarnation of Ashanti has earned high visibility and an impressive following among the Midwest’s ever-expanding community of Latin jazz aficionados.

En Fuego,Ashanti,Edgewater Group,Smooth yet pointed Latin jazz with liberal Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences and a healthy dose of crisp vocal work.

4 out of 5 stars Classical Guitar.......2007-03-15

It was a gift for my father who turned 88 on March 1st.
I sent it to him in Spain. He has been a guitar teacher all his life and still has students now in his ripe old age. He loved it, loved the music, loved the way they play.

5 out of 5 stars These fiery renditions surpassed my expectations!.......1999-11-19

Once again the L.A.G.Q. triumphs with their transcriptions of the very well known works included here. All of the music lends itself very well to the instrument, especially in the hands of this phenomenal quartet. This debut recording of the Ian Krouse selection is dramatic, dynamic and generally astounding. This is absolutely one of my favorite guitar recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding music and great value!!.......2006-04-02

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-22

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

5 out of 5 stars Very Highly Recommended.......2004-05-08

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

5 out of 5 stars Lucybell's Best.......2007-01-08

I don't disagree that this album is different from the previous efforts... but I don't consider that a bad thing. I liked the trippyness and melodic synth stuff you could find on other albums. But this more straight-ahead rocker is more consistently appealing... it's like they were meant to rock a bit more all along.

I never get tired of this melodic, rocking, passionate, intelligent CD. Not a bad song on here. I'm really looking forward to their next one as well.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 actually..........2006-11-28

I give this album 3.5 stars because it's nowhere near Lucybell's masterpiece, "Amanece". Gone are the electronic passages in order to pursue a more hardened rock sound. It's not that the songs are bad, but it sometimes lacks a little bit of that something that made Lucybell different from the rest of the pack. The production is superb and the voice sounds amazing. I'm not really nuts about the new drummer as he plays in some songs as though it was a punk ensemble and lacks the psychedelic groove that the previous drummer had. All in all a solid effort but if you want the best from Lucybell, buy 'Amanece' or the self titled 'Lucybell'.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-06-29

I'm writing this for you English speakers out there... BUY THIS ALBUM! I've been following Lucybell for a long time now and believe that they may just be the best band out there... The music speaks for itself- melodious, haunting, attention-grabbing, heart-wrenching, mesmerizing... With all due respect, by the way, to Francisco (ex-drummer and attempted singer), Lucybell have truly become invincible with the addition of Cote Foncea on the skins! IT'S ABOUT TIME Lucybell gets the recognition they deserve- they sell out shows in their native Chile and pack houses across Latin America... now it's time to do the same when they come to the U.S. ... I'm currently in Japan and pissed that I won't be able to see them live but I will definitely be wearing this CD out like the the others!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Recording.......2007-03-09

This was a great buy for me. The power and accuracy of Placido's voice are demonstrated well. Two CD's and 34 songs--just can't beat that for the price.

4 out of 5 stars A must for a Placido fan.......2005-04-23

If you've continously listened to this master of tenors and said "wow, I like it, I want to listen even more of him", then raise it to 5 stars, which is the rating I personally give the CD; HOWEVER, if you've only heard him once or not at all, you might want to wait a while and get to know him and other tenors better. Why? Well, disc 1 is the "classical" disc, with arias from famous operas and choral pieces by Puccini and the like, but disc 2, the "modern" or "popular" disc, contains music that will leave you a bit puzzled, since it's is not for everyone; a lot of people have never heard zarzuela or tunes by Manzanero or Lecuona. In short, this disc is better suited for fans of Placido or people who want to know him better, if not, it still is a top choice, and this way you just might fall in love with him (well, his singing, not him literally).

5 out of 5 stars Great for what it is.......2005-01-13

I agree with the previous poster that this does not contain his great dramatic stuff like otello/wagner, but the collection is a beautiful one. There are some great recordings here, and his crossover stuff(maria, Dulcinea, impossible dream) is very interesting. His opera is of course impecable and brilliant. Finally we get to hear Domingo's high C in Di Quella Pira, and its a good one. The zarzuela or spanish operetta type songs and are wonderful.

I found this to be beautiful and exhilirating to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Certainly not ALLL the Essential Domingo.......2005-01-03

I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.

There is an "edge" to Domingo's voice that perhaps accounts for his ability to transition successfully into the heavier repertory. I find that tonal quality particularly noticeable in this collection - and sometimes too pronounced. On the other hand, there are a few wonderful surprises. His "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'elisir d'amore is a stand out. Its rare you here a tenor with this much power sing the role. The duet "Bima dagli occhi" from Madama Butterfly with Renata Scotto, again casts Pinkerton with a quality tenor not often found in the opera house any more. I loved the selection from Gianni Schicchi - when is the last time you found Rinuccio cast with this size tenor voice - and the Italian tenor's aria from Rosenkavalier is a treasure from a recording currently out of print. And then there is one of Domingo's signature roles - Jack Rance in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West. No one sings Rance better than Domingo - and the excerpt from the complete recording finds Domingo at his very best.

Disk two is devoted to song - popular and classical. There is a fair amount of tripe - too much cross over (as in who needs to hear Domingo sing "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha - Broadway is not Mr. Domingo's genre). But there are some wonderful cuts as well - "Granada" is a Domingo encore specialty, and I was particularly struck by the song "In Pace" from the motion picture Hamlet - I never saw the film and was truly taken aback at how beautiful a song this is, and Domingo's voice soars.

I found the sound of these CD's a bit "tinny". Perhaps its the analogue to digital conversion, but I was disappointed in the overall sound. The album is badly mistitled "The Essential Placido Domingo". Certainly this is some of the essential Domingo - and some very wonderful examples of the lyric Domingo - but there is clearly a volume two to come - the dramatic Placido Domingo. But why wait - buy this fine collection, and then feast on some of the complete recordings such as Otello or Lohengrin.

4 out of 5 stars Solid, comfortable, familiar -- very good!.......2005-01-01

Why wait to see if this reviewer enjoyed Sony's latest offering: I did, and so will you. Hats off to Sony for getting it right with this two CD, 34-song bonanza of Placido Domingo singing -- well, as the name implies -- the essentials, from opera to Broadway to Hollywood, in a mix that keeps its distance while holding it all together in a package that breeds enough familiarity to make even the most harsh tenor critic purr. The more clasical offerings are on the first CD and the more sentimental are on disc two. Interestingly, I found side two more seductive and subdued in tone, and enjoyed listening to Mr. Domingo's interpretation of such popular favorites as "Maria" from "West Side Story", "Dulcinea" from "Man From LaMancha" and a couple duets with John Denver (Perhaps Love) and Maureen McGovern (A Love Without End). The songs selected for side two actually did set a thematic tone. Readers of my reviews know that I place a high value on a CDs overall ability to present what is offered in a bundle that sets and keeps a mood. I usually ask two questions: is it consistent once the mood is set; and does it keep the listener in that mood throughout once established? Here, well, here, I break from tradition and profess some confusion. The mood on disc one is not thematic but ecclectic -- from solo's to duets, from live recordings to studio, from one orchestra to the next, from upbeat to mellow. Technically, while there is some difference in the overall sound quality while switching from one setting to another, it is something you would have to listen for to catch, and becaue of this doesn't amount to a serious flaw as presented. What saves disc one from my usual "tenor blahs" is Mr. Domingo's exceptional voice and the selection of songs chosen -- which, while altering between one mood and another, are all familiar enough that we listen with knowing ease to what we expect. This isn't the kind of CD you put on while holding a conversation with anyone, but rather one you would put on, close your eyes and listen to for its sheer technical achievement -- or more precisely for Mr. Domingo's talent. The voice is clear and strong and passinate and reflects Mr. Domingo's control of his range and interpretive skills. Listen to Verdi's "Ingemisco" with The London Symphony and Leonard Bernstein; Puccini's "Bimba Dagli Occhi" with Renata Scoto (he sings a couple meodies with Scoto) and Umberto Giordino's "Amor ti Vieta" from Fedora to get an idea of what I am referring to here. It took me a couple sessions with each side to settle down and appreciate what was offered. Hopefully this review will get you ready and you will enjoy it from the start. PJW

It's impossible to keep a great band--namely the Kumbia Kings--down. A.B. Quintanilla III's bilingual outfit has undergone major line-up changes (including the addition of Chris Perez as a guitarist) and still struggles with an often-distracting, ghetto-fabulous image. But Fuego, the Kings' fourth proper studio album, is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience, proffering an enticing recipe of cumbia, hip-hop and R&B rhythms. As is now custom, the Kings include a couple of topsy-turvy remakes, including Musical Youth's 1983 smash, "Pass the Dutchie," and "Ella Sabe," a psychedelic rendition of Steely Dan's "Do It Again." There's also a clever sampling of the classic club ditty "The Roof is On Fire" during the title track. High-profile guests, including Noel from Sin Bandera and teen singer Belinda, also add to the glitter. But it's ultimately the Kings' innovative sound that remains front-and-center on standout tracks "Viento" and "Ay Amor." --Joey Guerra

I actually only bought this for the Chiquilla song. I have enjoyed the entire CD. I didn't know much about Kumbia Kings, and wasn't familiar with their R&B style singing. Awesome! Really smooth and hip. I look forward to adding more of their albums to my playlist. Didn't like "Pass the Dutchie" though. Wasn't Pee Wee underaged at the time to be singing about that?

5 out of 5 stars I love this Album to bits, Literally!.......2005-05-18

Gosh, i've never laughed so much in my life, then after hearing this cd!, The Kumbia Kings should be comedians, their music is amazing, and their video for "SSSSHH" is inspiring, i have never seen such effective use of a budget for a video, the 'matrix' bit was groundbreaking, when the 'singer' was dragged diagonally across the floor. I'm so glad Frankie J left the group, lord knows what kind of damage would have occurred to his musical career and reputation had he stayed in the group for any longer. So when my wife bought the album for me, i tried to listen to it, but was in such hysterics i forgot to turn off the oven, which burned down our kitchen, suffice to say our relationship has never recovered. This album was the sole reason for the failure of my marriage, so next time you listeners listent to the dodgy beats, look out for you appliances

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew Green

5 out of 5 stars The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28

Having been a fan of the King's Singers since my teenage years, which are growing ever more faint in my memory, I am sometimes surprised that they still surprise me. And yet, they always do. There is something quite magical about their voices - not just their individual voices, which are all wonderful, but what happens when you put them all together - the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. They have hit upon a great formula, which will hopefully be around for many more wonderful recordings.

The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.

This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT INTERPRETATION.......2005-03-06

I am a fun of Spanish Renaissance Music and I found this recording extremely good! King's Singers shows their abilities once again!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-01-05

I am a huge fan of Renaissance music, and I have to say, this recording is truly outstanding! The blend, dynamics, style and tone really need to be heard to be appreciated. The addition of the Harp Consort to this already superlative group also gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And Stephen Connolly! Oh, be still my foolish heart!! What a voice! The most resonant I can remember hearing! The selections by Mateo Flecha will make you laugh out loud, but my personal favorite - at least, for the moment - is "Aleph, quomodo sedet sola civitas" by Padilla. The extremely musical performance and the chill-producing display of dynamics makes this piece sound like it is performed by a choir of many more than six! I highly recommend this CD to all who appreciate quality music.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-07

This disc is the king'singers' second release with the current lineup (Hurley, Short, Phoenix, Lawson, Crouch, and Connolly) and is in my opinion the better of the two. Paul Phoenix, k's tenor, has told me that he much prefers the blend and sound on this disc to that of Street Songs. The singing is superb, and is ably supplemented with the playing of the Harp Consort. This disc is also great fun to listen to! You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of textures heard here. The disc starts out with a solo track by 2nd baritone Gabriel Crouch, and also includes small-group tracks as well as full-roster pieces. Anyone who has caught their April 2000 tour has likely heard "La bomba" by Mateo Flecha, recorded on here. It is obvious that the k's had great fun making this recording! Enjoy!

    Album Description

For their latest and greatest CD release, San Francisco's multiple award-winning LEE PRESS-ON AND THE NAILS are tackling the latin genre... with a twist! This may not be the latin you're used to... this is Hollywood Latin, the kind of music that puts you in the mind of Los Angeles in the 50s. Of course, LPN's trademark Big Band sound is here too, along with new originals and some stuff that's just downright silly.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-04-25

I recently discoverd this band and after I heard "God's Gift", I just had to buy the album. It did not dissapoint. This is my favorite LPN album. Other standouts include "Pico and Sepulveda", "Pink Elephants on Parade" and "It Had Better Be Tonight"

5 out of 5 stars Screamin' fun swing!.......2004-10-28

Found this band and this CD by purest chance, looking for versions of the song "Hot for Teacher", which they cover elsewhere. Listening to the samples, I had to buy it; listening to the whole CD, I had to recommend it. This band has a smart, stylish approach, spiked with a wicked sense of humor. Leslie Presley is sexy in vocals like "It Had Better Be Tonight" (Henry Mancini would salivate), and their cover of "Pink Elephants on Parade" had me rolling on the floor. Their original tracks are fine, too ... though "God's Gift" did seem a bit more like the ordinary run of swing than the rest of the tunes. Still in all, a great selection, and you can bet I will be acquiring the rest of their discography. LPN Swings!

4 out of 5 stars The world's weirdest swing band goes Latin -- sorta.......2004-01-29

Lee Press-On and the Nails is a swing band that actually takes an intelligent approach to modern swing: they interpret swing as the punk music of its day (1930s), and present it that way. They play like and out of control circus train loaded with boxes of corpses. If Tim Burton ran a swing band, it would be like this!

LPN is best live (they're almost a comedy act, and Leslie looks sooooo delicious in those red dresses of hers), but make great albums too. The focus of this album is on their Latin tunes, so there is less of their characteristic hard-swing, so I like it a bit less than their last two albums. Nonetheless, it's still great. Listening to it is a party in itself.

The best tracks are the first and last: "Pico and Sepulveda" is a energetic swing-polka on the names of Los Angeles Streets. It gets the album off to a awesome start. "Mexican Radio" takes the Wall of Voodoo song (and its screamingly funny lyrics) and swings the hell out of it. I love listening to them play these two pieces live, and having them on disc is a real pleasure.

Other great works: a Latin version of the swing classic "Begin the Beguine" (recording technology turns the band into a real sixteen-piece big band on this one!). "(You've Got a Shaolin Kung-Fu Death Grip on My Soul" is the most danceable song, a sort of Stray-Cats like bit of rockabilly with hysterical lyrics. "Pink Elephants on Parade" ressurects a very un-PC Disney song. And Leslie croons sexily on "Coax Me a Little."

If you want some unique modern music, grab a copy. Also get "Playing Dirty," their live recording. (Hey, I was there!)

Watch out for Lee Press-On, he is the future leader of your planet!

Not much is known about the great Lee Presson-
However, his music seems to seek you out like a thief in the night. He and his beautiful wife, Leslie Presley, will woo you with their witty lyrics as well as wonderfully adapted classics. Be sure to check out their other albums as well: LPN Live at the HiBall Lounge: Jump Swing from Hell, Swing is Dead, Hiball Lounge Sessions Vol. 1, and Playing Dirty: Live at the Derby- in addition to this one. Also checkout their website: www.leepresson.com. If you ever get a chance to see Lee Presson and the Nails perform, don't pass it up! The show will leave you in stitches!

5 out of 5 stars Lee Press On is great!.......2003-09-19

This band is whole lot of fun. They are unique in all respects. The music is energetic, the lyrics interesting, the whole Lee Press on experience is quite stimulating. It is my desire to see this band perform live before I die. The other LPN CDs are great, too.

5 out of 5 stars VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2003-09-20

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

In this box set you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was recorded by Yepes before any other guitarist. There are also the rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B0000B09Z5 or another B000026ZRL.

I bought this 4 cd set under the title Gitarra Espanola for about fifteen dollars more used than under its correct title Guitarra Espanola. It and the individual four volumes are out of stock. Volume 1 Sanz, Soler and Sor are pretty good. Volume 2 Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, and Turina are more the Spanish or Classical guitar I am used to from the likes of Romero, Williams, and Villa Lobos.
Volume 3 has the first recording of Joaaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjeuz from 1947. My seller said that volume 3 was defective though it was just the recording capability of 1947.
Salvador Bararisse, another Twentieth Century composer for the guitar, was thrilling. Antonio Ruiz-Pipo challenged me. He was born in 1933.
There is a volume 5 with Joaquiln Rodrigo: Fantasia para un Gentilhombre/Concierto Madrigal for 2 Guitars & Orchestra/Marurice Ohana: Concerto Three Designs for Guitar & Orchestra that I will try to get used or new as it is also out of stock. These are way high in the Amazon Sales Rankings, but for a retrospecitive of the 10-string guitarist who died in 1997, this will do.
