It's finally happened. After years of puzzling popularity by way of derivative rock retreads, Mana has finally made the leap to full-bodied musical force on its first album in four years, Amar Es Combatir. The disc is a thoughtful, tender and often terrific collection of pop wizardry. It's buoyed by solid production work, a cohesive sound and singer Fher Olvera's commanding vocal presence. Mana has always drawn inspiration from the arena-rock vibes of everyone from U2 to Journey, but this time, the group takes those blueprints and creates its own urgent framework. It's a thrilling, insanely catchy collection. Everything on the disc crackles with energy, from winsome opener "Manda Un Senal" to swaggering closing track "Relax." In between, the Mexico-based outfit weaves memorable stories of love that are marked by pulsing percussion, driving guitar riffs and emotive vocals. First-rate stuff from a group who finally--at least to these ears--justifies all the fuss. --Joey Guerra
Album Description
Amar es Combatir, Mana's 9th studio album and first in four years, was produced by Mana with the special collaboration of recording engineer Tom Russo (Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton). Also includes a duet with JLGuerra.

After a while it all sounds the same.
The BEST Latino Rock Band in the world.......2007-04-04
When it comes to asking people about Pop Latino music; it is almost common that almost everyone you ask will say Mana is among thier favorites. This is probably hard to believe that I have only been a Mana fan or the other word they use for fans like me "Manatico" since 2004. I had a huge interest in the group when I Bought my first album from them called "Unplugged". Thier soothing sounds of a live concern scene had me wanting more. When I bought the next album Cuando Los Angeles Lloran I was hooked. I really enjoy listening to Fher Olvera, the main singer in the group. His musical talents are often compared to the main singer in Sting or Bono from U2. It's really amazing how the group we know as Mana know now almost failed to exist at one point of thier career. I listen to these guys often and recommend anyone to listen to thier music, you don't have to speak Spanish but you can still enjoy the sound of Fher's voice, as well as the drumbeats performed by Sergio Vallin Rodriguez. Here are a couple reviews of thier albums from thier careers (may not have all of them)
Falta Amor 1990- Great first album under the name Mana. for those of you who don't that they used to be called Sombrero Verde and were also part of the movement called "Rock en tu Idioma" This album has more of an Adult Contemporary sound to it, kinda like a Soft Rock en Espanol type sound. My favorite song in this album is "Rayando El Sol" Mana's first big hit.
Donde Jugaran Los Ninos 1992- Another great masterpiece of work, still has the Soft Rock en espanol sound. Great hits include: Oye Mi Amor, Vivir Sin Aire, and Como Diablos, as well as the beginning up beat hit: De Pies a Cabeza. This album you can say put the group on the map on heading to being one of the best Latino rock band in the world
Cuando Los Angeles LLoran 1995- This is when they kinda leave the Soft Rock en espanol sound and head towards the rock en espanol sound. You can tell of the musical differences by listening to thier sound, Selva Negra, as well thier balads. Thier balads aim towards the edge of rock. I don't have a favorite song from this album but I do consider it as one of my favorites.
Suenos Liquidos 1997- En el Muelle de San Blas is another favorite song from Mana.
MTV Unplugged 1999- Another favorite of mine, has the all songs in a concert setting on CD. You can listen to this album while relaxing or if your up and around.
Revolucion de Amor 2002- Includes the hit Mariposa Tracioniera. Love that song!
Amar es Combatir 2006- My favorite song is Labios Compartidos, still love thier music even though they went a little stronger
The complete latin album.......2007-04-02
I don't speak spanish but I enjoy the music. All the songs are good if you like rock, upbeat, romantic music...I made 3 copies, one for home, car and work. Oh! I even have it on my Ipod for when I exercise. You just can't get enough of it. This is the best album ever!!!
sexy spanish music.......2007-03-30
what an awesome album!.Manda me Senal is my most beloved song and I have dedicated this song to my wife.I have recorded to my mind this song just when I first listened. So catchy and sexy tune.Bendita tu Luz is another apple-pie hit.All in all, I am grateful this contemporary Orpheuses. IMy Spanish fluency increases day by day thanks to the lyrics of their songs.
if it you're thinking about it, buy it.......2007-03-13

On their fourth full-length studio release, Ozomatli serve up a rhythmically seething musical mélange that serves as virtual mirror to the dizzying cultural contradictions at the heart of their Los Angeles hometown, wrapping it in a studio-polished veneer (largely courtesy of Santana/Ricky Martin producer KC Porter) that only underscores their intriguing reflections. They wear their civic pride as badge of honor on the gritty "City of Angels," a hip-hop-funk-fusion anthem that courses straight from the street to the stars. The joyous "La Temperatura," a tribute to the city's pro-immigrant marches of '06, picks up the local thread and weaves it into the band's longstanding social conscience, one they focus on Washington's inept response to Hurricane Katrina via the savory, N'Awlinz-meets-Norwalk swagger of "Magnolia Soul." The title track hints at a few conquered personal demons, while the sultry, Los Lobos-esque Spanish ballad "Violeta," the infectious 80s-ska-funk-meets-00s-punk-pop of "When I Close My Eyes," and the hip-hop-jarocho stew "La Segundo Mano" (featuring Queztal's Martha Gonzales on vocals) stand as vibrantly disparate testaments to the band's true range of pan-cultural musical fervor and accomplishments. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
This is more mainstream than earlier Ozo.......2007-07-01
Which may be why some listeners object. "Dragon's" good and it may be their entree into more acknowledgement. "Street Signs" is probably my favorite of their CDs and more indicative of their work, but this is still a great melange of a lot of different styles and worth the investment.
Actually, 4.5 stars!.......2007-06-19
Truth is, I barely liked this disk after the first listen. I thought the guys had "sold out" and made a disk that was too pop-ish, slick and lightweight. But then I played it a few more times and, DAMN, these songs are stuck firmly in my head. I still think Street Signs had three songs better than everything on this disk, but overall I have come to thoroughly enjoy Dragon for what it is... different, fun and very energetic. Ozo is one of the coolest bands around and if this disk draws in some new fans to mix with us old ones (I discovered them in 2005), then I'm OK with the "selling out".
NOTE: If you want to buy their very best, get Ozo's Live at the Filmore set!!!! That one earns 5.5 stars.
Fantastic, Ecclectic Mix.......2007-06-12
Compared to the rest of the music Ozo has put out this is probably their most solid integration of various types of music. With a lot more Asian influence on this album I think they hit the nail on the head. Most of the songs get your foot tapping and the lyrics in English are quite profound. Highly recommended! It has been in my CD player since I bought it last month!
Expanding their musical scope........2007-06-10
Their usual high energy with another "take" on the avenue of employing rap technique that helps someone who is 60 (which I am) appreciate one style of rap as a valid form of musical expression.
Slouching toward pop - disappointing.......2007-06-06
I have been a big fan of Ozomatli since their first CD. I rave about them to all who will listen as most people who love this band do. This CD is indeed the turning point toward pop for this band. There are shades of the old band in some of the songs like La Gallina, or Violeta but most of the stuff is empty. It is like a band trying to cover Ozomatli songs. I am sure that most fans will give this a try in spite of the negative reviews, but for our sake guys don't do this again.

Between their name, stage introductions spoken in a uniquely twisted form of Spanglish, bizarre lucha libre attire, and ongoing association with Latino rockabilly revivalist Big Sandy, Spanish has always been a major facet of Los Straitjackets' shtick. So it's little surprise that the Nashville-based garage/surf/twang/trash rockers decided to head south of the border for an all-covers album. You don't need to hablar español to shimmy, shimmy, shake along with the quartet. Guest vocals from Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos (who also produced the disc), Little Willie G. of East L.A.'s vintage Thee Midniters, and Big Sandy bring a soulful strut to these punchy stompers. True to form, liberties are taken with the song titles: "Hang on Sloopy" is now "Hey Lupe," "Bony Maronie" comes out as "Popotitos," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" inexplicably appears as "El Microscopico Bikini." But that's all part of the fun as the masked men and singers swing through hot-tamale versions of signature hits from the Kinks, the Troggs, the Coasters, and others. Although the Fab Four aren't here as songwriters, their spirit energizes rocking renderings of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Slow Down," and "Anna," all early Beatles staples. The Straitjackets haven't entirely abandoned the instrumentals from their own early years, as the scorching "Whittier Blvd." attests. Slow dancers will swoon to ballads such as "Dejenme Llorar" and Barbara Lynn's sublime "You'll Lose a Good Thing." Liner notes tell us that Spanish covers of many of these tunes managed to become moderate hits in the '60s and '70s, but it's safe to say these fresh versions will spice up any carnival. Let the fiesta begin! --Hal Horowitz

The whole family starts singing and dancing around every time we listen to the CD. The music is just plain fun!
Great CD.......2007-07-14
Fun band - great at parties. You'll want their other CDs after listening to this one.
good pick!.......2007-07-13
This is my first Los Straight Jackets CD but it won't be my last! Really enjoy the old yet new sound!
Mucho Fun!.......2007-05-26
Great song selections, rock solid playing and vocals from some terrific performers... what more could you ask for? I have no idea why one person gave this release a single star. This is a fun album. Los Straitjackets & Big Sandy also put on a heck of a live show by themselves, but when they tour together... watch out! You won't stop dancing for about a month. This disc is highly recommended.
What a disappointment!.......2007-05-13
A new Los Straitjackets CD? Produced by Cesar Rojas? Sounds like a winning combo doesn't it?
'Fraid not mi amigos. This CD is a major work of spam. Absolutley no originality and not even a trace of
enthusiasum. I'm sorry..I am a fan of Rojas and the masked men, but this is not a work too be proud of.
Lackluster vocals by Lil Willie G and even less effort from Big Sandy. Pass on this one carnales.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The debut from Manu Chao, the former leader of French world-punks Lo Mano Negra, leaned heavily on Latin America for its inspiration, but this time around he's obviously been spending time--at least in his head--in the Caribbean. Reggae rhythms abound, and the opener "Merry Blues" features some wonderfully wonky Jamaican-style brass, while "Promiscuity" takes its cue from Trinidadian calypso. Of course, this being Chao, there are plenty of playful touches--from ringing cell phones to speeded-up vocals--and inevitably there are the Latin influences throughout to remind you of what remains close to his heart ("La Primavera" in particular is a standout). But there's also some recycling from the last album, with two pieces sharing the "King of Bongo" melody, including "Mr. Bobby," his tribute to Bob Marley, and that's a little worrying. Is Manu Chao running out of inspiration? Certainly this doesn't have the freshness of Clandestino, however enjoyable it may be. If anything, it seems more of a holding action rather than a giant step forward. But sometimes that's necessary to be able to look to the future. --Chris Nickson

it doesnt get much better than this!.......2007-06-28
these guys are going to save the world. education my friend, is the only way
There is "Esperanza" for music after all .......2007-02-15
I'll admit: I'm biased against current rock music, as much of it is generic waste. But Manu Chao is an outstanding original. The elusive Mr. Chao, former Manu Negra frontman, is a brashly inventive wellspring of talent, churning out quirky, catchy, funky tunes that embody seemingly every musical style in existence. I love the Zen zaniness exhibited on some songs ("Me Gustas Tu"), and the luxurious beauty of others ("Denia"). The musician's eclectic soul must be owed to his roots: he hails from southern France, but lives as a nomad of sorts in Latin America. Chao sings mainly in Spanish, but he displays an impressive multi-lingualism, crooning in his native French, as well as in English, Portuguese and even Arabic. Indeed, on some songs Chao mixes French and Spanish with such facility that it's easy to forget that they aren't the same language. Manu Chao embodies a true world music ethos, with a bohemian twist.
A Must!.......2007-02-05
My favorite album of all time from the most important artist of our time. Manu Chao's contributions can be likened to greats like Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Bob Marley with a global perspective. This intoxicating collection provokes and delights providing the first great folk anthem of the century. If you don't know this artist, get to know him
totally addictive.......2006-08-18
i loved clandestino but this one has got me totally addicted. i've hardly listened to anything else lately. i just can't seem to take it out of my car's cd player. he sings in something like seven different languages. there's styles and joy all over the place. this is the record the whole world would make if it could only make one record.
Report from the city.......2006-01-24
This record got very popular in Los Angeles around 2002-2003 among a very scruffy and tasty set. We aren't really that clueless (though this reviewer certainly is compared to the other reviewers here). I hear this record and Clandestina all over the city now, played from sound boards between sets, and in all the best places for young people who are fixing up the world for my old age.

Nice work........2007-06-26
Love the constant accordian, and the addition of rappers Daniel Spinetta and Anita Tijoux on a couple of tracks makes this more interesting. The final track, "Sin Documentos", is heartbreaking.
Ms. Venegas uses a variety of styles, from cumbia to Euro disco. From track to track, you get something different.
A little bit of everything!.......2007-05-13
If you like a CD with a wide range of sound, this is for you! Julieta Venegas has a rich, raspy voice that compliments any musical style. Some songs have a hip-hop feel to them, while others could almost be described as country music. Of course there's a definite Latino vibe throughout... This CD is one you can just put in the player and let it go, without having to hit the skip button.
Julieta Venegas Rules!.......2007-04-26
Julieta Venegas is an awesome artiste with a wonderful voice. She has talent and charisma and the album Limon y Sal proves she has what it takes to be a leader in latin music, because it is unique in it's musical style. All of her songs are hits that you will enjoy over and over again.I love her voice, her songs and the music in all of her albums.

When I first heard "abrazame" i laughed because it sounded like girls singing softly...but anyways i liked the song, and when I downloaded it, I also downloaded "Coleccionista de canciones" Wow that song really shocked me since I first heard it! Beautiful lyrics! Then, I decided to download the whole album, WOW, is the only thing I can say...beautiful songs like Sin tu amor, Me basto, Todo cambio,Me da igual, and my personal favorite, perderte de nuevo, show a group that can really sing. Lovely lyrics in those songs. In "va para ti" you hear a very rock but cool Camila. The songs that I think are no that great are No quiero, u got my love and nanga ti feo, the rest are all future radio hitss!!! I was really surprise with this group, and I am now a big Fan.

As one of the driving forces in the French-Spanish ethno-punk band Mano Negra, songwriter-guitarist Chao delivers a surprising solo endeavor. Centered around a simple editorial writing style and an acoustic guitar, this album chronicles his political and personal travels around the world, studying the foibles of life in Latin America and the Caribbean, through Africa and back to Europe. He quotes but never actually plays salsa, son, reggae, Latin pop, and African folk music, all to the service of his songs (written and sung in English, French, and Spanish). The backing is a deceptive hodgepodge of guest artists and collected sounds he has pasted together to service the simple songs he sings. There is a circuslike feel to the whole project, a childlike sense of wonder coupled with a cynical and sometimes sly glance at the "real world." This is a single piece of work, each song bleeding into the next without stopping, a train ride that slows at each station along the way but never stops. It has charm, wit, and depth--a rare and potent combination of virtues for a pop musician. --Louis Gibson

Happiness Comes in a CD.......2007-07-06
Why isn't Manu Chao more well-known in the States? He should be! I discovered his music purely by accident and have since learned he is very well-known throughout the world, but rarely comes to the US for touring. He was at San Francisco Civic Center in summer of 2007 and the place was packed. I can only describe this music through the title of this review. It is playful, simple, creative, thought-provoking and unique. Chao mixes several different languages into the lyrics of one tune and reuses musical compositions from other songs for new. Some 'pureblood' musicians criticise that last part, but for me it makes me feel like his music is an old friend, one who immediately makes you smile every time you see him! Get this CD so you can hear 'King of the Bongo!' It's worth the purchase price just for that alone!
Fluid Enjoyment.......2006-11-10
This album, in every sense of the word 'album', is great. I saw Manu Chao live in Chicago, Summer of '06, and was blown away. Clandestino was a great introduction to a studio album by Manu Chao for me. The songs link together when listened to on CD that is reminiscent of the way Beatles albums were put together. If you are looking for an album to remind you of travel and adventure away from where you might currently be, this is the one!
First solo work by a genius.......2006-08-10
Before this, his debut solo album, Manu Chao had already become famous in front of musical troupe Mano Negra. Yet with "Clandestino" Manu Chao showed, like other legendary band leaders before him, the true caliber of his musical genius.
Keeping up with politically loaded songs that were so characteristic in Mano Negra, and coupled with an undying joyful spirit, the album perfectly blends styles such as reggae, ska and other tropical rhythms with samples of radio transmissions and speeches, to produce an unmistakeable effect that can only be described as Manu Chao.
Get this one and also make sure to get your hands on "Proxima Estacion: Esperanza" which is just as good.
Enchanting..........2006-06-17
It's like looking at a Monet, enjoying a piece of your favorite fruit in the beach at night, or backpacking through Latin America. Sorry for this explanation, but you just can't put in words the feelings and places this CD can take you to. It's definitely an experience, a compilation of melodies and flavors from different countries. Enjoy!
Possibly politically interesting, but extremely dull musically.......2006-04-29
I read all the glowing reviews of this album, and all I can say is that it must be the case that you have to speak Spanish to enjoy it. Judging by the merits of the music itself, there is not a single song on the entire CD that ventures outside of an elementary and predictable 3 chord progression - 1-4-5-1 (or for the minor songs, which almost all of them are, - 1-6-7-1). It's as if the composer had a single musical idea and used it to beat his listeners to death. Even the somewhat unusual instrumentation become maddening after hearing it for 16 songs in a row.
I can understand how someone might enjoy the overall style and rhythm, but that by itself doesn't make it high quality. In my opinion, if this weren't considered "World Music", it wouldn't have achieved anything near the apparent success it has.

Anyone who's caught Manu Chao and his band Radio Bemba Sound System at one of their live gigs will testify that the Parisian troubadour sure knows how to throw a party. This live album draws on reggae, salsa, and Latin pop songs from Chao's first two excellent solo albums (Clandestino and Proxima Estación: Esperanza) as well as joyous gems from his time leading the more punk-tinged Mano Negra. While the styles vary as often as the languages (Chao flits from Spanish to English to French as he translates his life as a global nomad into his music), the common thread is a sense of vitality and hope. From the uplifting reggae of "Bienvenida a Tijuana" to the African pop and salsa of "Casa Babylon," this album showcases Chao's role as the pied piper of multiculturalism, leading his crowd on a (literally) merry dance. And it's the crowd that really makes these 29 tracks come into their own. You can almost picture the mob waving, cheering, blowing whistles, shouting into megaphones, and generally having the wildest time this side of Rio Mardi Gras. A great flashback for those who have seen Chao live and a perfect introduction for recent converts. --Ian Watson

All time favourite.......2007-06-20
If you like Manu Chao you'll love this album! Very good vibes.
Happy Feeling.......2007-05-23
This is a great album, it makes you feel good, makes you want to get up and dance to the music.
A good stress buster, and a lot of fun.
Excellent........2007-02-07
Excellent. Manu Chao has a great power playing live. Radio Bemba is a selection of the best rock musicians around the world. The combination of all those talents is an explosion of music, rythm, and fire!
It's just excellent.
I strongly recommend it.
come on, people..........2006-07-07
i've read all the previous posts, and i'm shocked that no one has said a thing about the editing and mixing.
i mean, come on. if you listen to this cd straight through, it doesn't make sense. if someone cut two minute snippets of twenty-nine songs and stuck them all together with masking tape, it would sound like this. songs don't start or end; jarring random cuts happen mid-song.
someone keeps bumping the jukebox, but you don't hear the needle scratch.
which might be cool if this wasn't a LIVE ALBUM. being a live recording, these cuts affect the sound of the audience as well. large crowds of people do not sound like this.
listening to this cd in my car made me mad enough to get off my butt and figure out how to post a review. and i like manu chao. whoever assembled this live package shouldn't be allowed to work with recordings again. this album is easily the most unlistenable thing i've heard in years.
Best live album ever........2005-12-15
The songs are not carbon copies of thier vinyl originals but many of them are better and the instrumentation is amazing on this disc.
Yes, it's mostly at one tempo but that one is fast. Very addictive if you are ready to hear something that you don't necessarily recognize. The best live album I have ever heard. Try not to listen in a car as this album causes repetitive swerves and generally too happy behavior for driving.

Great Album.......2007-07-01
My parents owned this album then lost it along with other great albums many years ago, now I have a copy of this in LP (record format). The original album contains 3 records with a total of 30 songs and I have never been able to find the exact release in CD format. Most CD releases like this one only contain a partial listing of the original album. If they ever release it in its' full glory I will buy it in a second. I can only say that I feel sorry for all individuals that do not understand or speak Spanish, because great songs like these can never be translated into English with the same fervor, and gut wrenching soulfulness that this album brings.
I can genuinely say this album in its' LP glory is one of my greatest treasures.
How Divine!.......2007-05-21
Have you ever had a CD that the minute you heard it you fell instantly in love with it? That's what happens with Canta en Espanol. It doesn't matter if you understand Spanish or or, the beauty, poetry and melodic nature of the music transcends any language barrier. The guitars are soft and gentle, the voices lush and filled with emotion and passion that can only be Latin. The result is incredibly romantic. Listen to it with someone you love or someone you'd like the sparks to fly.
Eydie Gorme in all her glory!.......2007-04-01
Combine the gorgeous voice of Eydie Gorme, with the talented music trio Los Panchos, and what do you get? Some of the most amazing, beautiful music ever recorded!
Although she's best-known for her collaborations with husband Steve Lawrence, Miss Eydie Gorme also enjoyed a rich and popular partnership with the Los Panchos, and they recorded a few albums together; the best probably being 'Canta En Espanol'.
On this album (remastered in stereo for the very first time), Eydie Gorme gets to wrap her sensuous, velvet voice around such pieces as "Amor", "Sabor A Mi", "Noche de Ronda", and "Historia de un Amor".
Gorme's phrasing and accents are absolutely spot-on, and the arrangements from Los Panchos are very lush, suiting Gorme's vocals perfectly. For fans of Eydie Gorme, this would be a fine title.

Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-03-12
I remember listening to this as a child, my mom and grandma would play it. Over the years it was lost during moves. I'm so glad that I was able to find it on CD. I love the music Eydie Gorme's voice is so beautiful.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-30
Absolutely beautiful voice, accompanied by an exceptional Trio (Los Panchos) Highly recommend this CD. , would be perfect if words to the songs were included.
