If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-08

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction for those who are not purists!.......2007-06-20

Unfortunately, the great Silvio Rodríguez is virtually unknown outside the Spanish-speaking world. Aware of that, I've recently started giving presents of this sampler to friends who have never heard of him, . . . and some of them have subsequently gone on to buy one or another of his classic albums. Of course, no compilation could ever do justice to the wide range of his oeuvre, but this gem of a collection is a good start for those who otherwise might never be aware of this great genius.

5 out of 5 stars A good CD to start listening Silvio Rodriguez.......2006-08-12

I have many CD from Silvio Rodriguez. If you are like me, we both don't need a review. Looking at song listing is enough to know. Buy, if you are looking for only one Silvio Rodriguez's CD, i recommend this one. Many people only want a single CD from an artist, others want star with one, and after a while, return for more. In both cases, this CD is for them.

I recomend pass reviews below for people who are looking for 5 or 6 CD from Silvio Rodriguez. After all, probably if you are one from those, you already have this CD. Finally, pass reviews forget to mention "Días y Flores", it is a "must to have" CD in a Silvio Rodriguez basic colection.

1 out of 5 stars "Silvio Light".......2006-02-21

I have to agree wholeheartedly with the review of this CD by Antonio Rioseco. This CD is for marketing Silvio to the gringo. It has the 'de rigueur' revolutionary songs like " Cancion urgente para Nicaragua" & "Playa Giron" but it is far from the essence of this singer/songwriter. I suggest exploring his triptychs (Triptico 1, 2, 3 and Silvio, Rodriguez and Dominguez). My favorites are the second ones in each series (Triptico 2 y Rodriguez) which include some of his best poems put to music. I love "Llover sobre mojado" & "El tiempo esta a favor de los pequenos" and Rodriguez's "Casiopea". So don't go for the Silvio Light go for something more filling.

3 out of 5 stars Sólo punto de partida.......2005-11-03

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one.......2005-10-06

Cuban "trova" music has suffered a lot because of the compilations. They tend to reduce the music to "hits". And this compilation represents that manipulation (I dont care if it comes from Byrne or whatever) for Silvio Rodriguez music. If you want to really enjoy Rodriguez begin by his old albums (Al final de este viaje, Unicornio, Mujeres, etc). You can follow to the 80s big albums (especially "Triptico"), and then probably you will like to try the 90s solo work ("Silvio", "Rodriguez", "Dominguez") Trova is not about hits. Get the albums. Dont by this one, you will loose your money.

5 out of 5 stars Such a magnificent touch on the fretboard........2006-10-12

Parkening has such a sensitive touch. He can make the softest song come alive into a world of its own with simple picking techniques. Or, on faster pieces, his brilliant interpretation and dexterity are truly amazing. You'll experience a wide range of emotions when listening to this CD, and you'll be in awe of Parkening's mastery of the classical guitar.

5 out of 5 stars great playing.......2005-09-17

this is one of the best recordings on any instrument. Parkening is a truly great artist.

4 out of 5 stars Bach at its best.......2003-04-24

The best part of this CD is the Bach recordings. I could listen to the Fugue from Violin Sonata No. 1 over and over without let up--it's astounding. The Chaconne is one of the best recordings of that most exalted work by Bach. The main reason I didn't give this CD a 5-star rating are the non-Bach selections, which although played brilliantly, are not among my favorite compositions. The exceptions are the charming Renaissance pieces for lute and the impressively transcribed and skillfully performed "Empress of the Pagodas." To be sure, there are some beautiful and dazzling passages within many of the other pieces, which makes this CD definitely worth it. However, the best Parkening release is "The Great Recordings," which is a double-CD set with a greater variety of music and includes the Fugue and a few other recordings from this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic in the Segovia Tradition.......2000-02-18

Christopher Parkening's work has always been nothing less than stellar. This particular collection of works is drawn from four previous releases (and also includes unreleased recordings), and is exemplary of his artistry and talent. The recordings are as crisp and clear as the day they were set down on tape. His expression and tone are without comparison. The selection of works on this particular CD show his ability to perform classics in the broadest range imaginable, and does so with ease.

The liner notes give great detail on each piece, including a brief history on Parkening himself. If nothing else, this brings the listener even closer to the performer, something I find rare in the classical music genre.

I once attended a concert given by local artists in a small church in Germany many years ago, and whenever I listen to this CD, it brings to mind memories of that afternoon. Parkening makes you feel as though you are in the room with him, listening in awe; you are never aware that he is playing in a studio at all.

Overall, this is a great example of one of the world's greatest classical guitarists (he's number one on my list).

5 out of 5 stars An indispensible CD to any music collection.......1999-08-26

This cd is a fine collection of some of the works released on Parkening's first four recordings, "In The Classic Style", "In The Spanish Style", "Romanza", and "Parkening And The Guitar". The music itself spans more than three centuries and effectivly demonstrates what the guitar is capable of in the hands of a great master. The disc begins with some of the better known transcriptions of Bach, and then moves on to some rarly heared guitar transcriptions of Mompou, Satie, Poulenc and Ravel. The entire album is wounderfully played, technically flawless and very expressive. As always Parkening plays with a beautiflly warm tone and a poetry reminiscent of Segovia's playing. I give this cd my highest recomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Done Well!!.......2006-08-30

The music on this CD is extremely well produced. Nostalgia from early music, the vocals performed in orginal spanish by early spanish stars of their day.
Some music on this disc might be remembered being used in the film, "Bye Bye Brasil." No punchy studio posturings, just simple elegant music performed at first part of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Xavier Cugat--a classic film favorite!.......2000-08-18

If you have watched a lot of classic films from the 40s you have probably seen Xavier Cugat and his band appearing in some of them (like "A Date With Judy," "Mexican Holiday," and some of the Esther Williams movies). You will also have heard some of the music from this CD. If you like the latin nightclub scenes from 40s classic films, you will probably like this CD as well. Sure, the music seems kind of campy now, but listening to this CD is kinda relaxing -- a remnant from a simpler time (at least on celluloid). Tune into that Hollywood Golden Era vibe.

I recommend this CD, it's one of my favorites. It is also good for ballroom dancing (vintage rhumba, tango, mambo, samba) since Xavier Cugat played mainly for dancers and uses even tempos.

5 out of 5 stars Cuban Landscapes for the Guitar.......2004-01-14

Manuel Barrueco is without a doubt one of the top 3 classical guitar players in the world. (I have been to several performances by the man and outside of fellow guitarist David Russell who would make the top 3, many times I have felt that Barrueco is #1 for our times) On this album, one can find many different sides to Cuban art music, most of them neglected for so long. Highlights of this great album are Ernesto Lecuona's
"Danza Lucumi", a beautiful prelude by Leo Brouwer, a most mesmerizing and memorable rumba-based composition in Enrique Ubieta's "New York Rush"; Leo Brouwer's "Rito de los Orishas" will send shivers down your spine in its first section and in the section one will find many beautiful Afro-Cuban melodies and rhythms. Like most of Brouwer's music and with all good music in fact, one must listen to it with complete focus and attention or else one will miss the boat completely. An elegant and powerful album from possibly the best classical guitarist of our times. 5 stars

1 out of 5 stars boring!.......2002-03-19

this is the dullest recording i have ever heard--not to mention boring.

5 out of 5 stars New and Interesting.......2000-06-30

This delightful album is a wonderful introduction to a body of overlooked compositions and composers. These works are engaging, melodic, and atmospheric. The recording again demonstrates why Barueco is the most interesting classical guitarist performing today. He consistently animates works to a level seldom achieved. Anyone weary of the usual classical guitar repertoire is well advised to seek out this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant ambient listening.......1999-06-11

None of the music here seems to come out of Cuba as a necessity, if you catch my meaning. Any Latin American composer could have turned out most of what is on this disc. On the other hand, the fact that all the composers are Cuban is reason enough, I suppose, to justify the title of this CD. Yet all this is beside the point. It is the music that should concern us. While none of it is strikingly original or even tuneful, there are moments of beauty, now brooding, now not quite as melancholy. But I cannot see myself wanting to give any of it close second hearings; although I will play it as ambient music and as a contrast to the more "popular" Giuliani, De Falla, Sor, et alia that usually are represented on collections such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-06-09

At last a maestro of the guitar releases a music CD expressing the other side of Cuban music that we seldom see. He brings to light the wonderfully expressive music of otherwise little heard contemporary composers. We constantly hear "salsa" and jazz influences in Cuban music, but seldom the serious, more elaborate side that also exists. This CD bridges that gap and gives a feel for the other side.

        Product Description

ELENA CASANOVA brings fire, passion and beauty to this great music of Cuba's finest composers, evoking the very soul of Cuban classics. Cuban-born Casanova began piano study at the age of five, and within three years was selected to enter the Music Conservatory in Havana, Cuba. By the age of 13 she had already performed major works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Schubert. Upon her family's move to the United States, she enrolled in the San Francisco Conservatory, and later received her performance degree from the University of Redlands. Ms. Casanova maintains an active concert career, and is a regular participant in master classes and musical competitions.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A disc to be treasured.......2002-09-28

This extraordinary recording recalls those great artistic pairings that inseparably combine music with the amor patriae of a fervent musician: Arthur Rubinstein playing Chopin and Szymanowski; Alicia de Larrocha playing Albéniz and Granados; and now, Juana Zayas interpreting Cervantes, Caturla, Hernández, and Lecuona. Cuban-born Zayas-whose landmark recording of the Chopin études placed her among our consummate Chopin interpreters-completely identifies with the music of her compatriots.

Zayas left Havana for the Paris Conservatory in her late teens, as did Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905) nearly a century earlier. His piquantly syncopated Cuban dances-30 of which are presented here-feature lively tango-habanera rhythms and folk-based elements, infused with insouciance, humor and nostalgia. Their quirky titles-Three Knocks, The Charmer, Farewell to Cuba, The Jealous One, Interrupted, Lost Illusions, to name a few-bring to mind other engaging collections of piano works, such as Alkan's Esquisses or Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words.

The name of Alejandro Caturla (1906-1940) will be unknown to most music lovers. None of his music is listed in the Schwann catalog. He gave a classical cast to Afro-Cuban influences, similar to what Albéniz achieved with his Iberia and Suite española. Caturla's Danza del tambor brings to mind the sharp rhythmic allure and dissonance of Bartók or Ginastera, while the gently affecting Pastoral Lullaby, a folk-based guajira, lingers long after its three minutes have passed.

Gifted in a number of fields, Caturla became a lawyer and judge, only to be assassinated by an irate defendant. Each of these composers became politically aware by necessity, given their country's long history of instability. Gisela Hernández (1912-1971) established ties to the Castro Government, which quickly recognized her teaching and compositional abilities. She was also instrumental in publishing the critical editions of Cervantes's music. Among her Cubanas represented here, Guajira is touched with the same gently rocking melancholy as Caturla's piece.

The music of Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) is the most often recorded of the four. As with Caturla, he was largely self-taught. His Afro-Cuban Dances are especially appealing; one cannot listen just once to these captivating pieces.

Zayas brings a beguiling zest and wit to the entire disc, all imbued with a native rhythmic sense. Realistically recorded, her generous, spirited playing inevitably brings a smile, evokes an affecting melancholy or warmly lifts one's mood. In contrast to the refinement of Zayas's playing, the awkwardly written and occasionally misspelled booklet notes represent the only drawback to an altogether inspired project.

5 out of 5 stars Lost and Found Freedom.......2001-10-09

Most of the Cuban music Ms. Zayas plays in this wonderful CD are pieces from the past, lost to many Cubans, like myself. What a joy it was for me to discover this CD as I searched the web! I was aware of Ms. Zayas's magnificent technique, for I have heard her play live Chopin's Piano Concerto in F at a concert in Florida-not an easy piece to play, for it needs not only a great technique but a lot of heart as well. That is why I was expecting this CD of Cuban Music to be played brilliantly and with a love of heart. And that much I got, and a lot more, for Ms. Zayas has also a fantastic sense of rhythm-the kind most "classical musicians" do not have-and she makes these pieces (most of which are Cuban dances) move with passionate ease and abandon, the way Cuban men and women love to move as they dance and make love. I was told she is planning to record Chopin's mazurkas (which are also dances), so I cannot wait for the new CD to come out. Ms. Zayas found lost old music and played it with a freedom that one seldom if ever hears in the classical music world. Bravo for her. Let's have some more.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance is the Key in Zayas' Recording.......2001-05-24

When listening to this beautiful recording, one realizes that the pianist is an artist of intelligence and nuance. I own seven versions of Cervantes' Danzas, including a very rare version of another great Cuban pianist of yesteryear, Yvette Hernández. I play all my Cervantes recordings quite often, and I must admit that I enjoy Ms. Zayas' recording the best. In her hands, the apparently simple music of Ignacio Cervantes is treated with such care, intelligence and finesse, that this simplicity is transformed into the sheer beauty of many brilliant colors, as precious and perfect as small jewls in an elegant necklece. Zayas brings Cervantes' music to the high level it deserves, saving it, for the pleasure of our ears, from the cursory and careless fashion in which, unfortunately, many pianists play such delicious piano miniatures.

Lecuona's piano music can be and has been played in all sorts of ways. Because his music has been so popular and popularized, many listeners may object to the classical treatment these Lecuona pieces recieve in Ms. Zayas' hands. There is a very dynamic tension which exists in the "soul" of Lecuona's music, between the African and the European elements which permeate it. The true universal projection of Lecuona's classical music resides, precisely, in a successful interpretation, on the part of the sensitive pianist, who is able to capitalize on this tension, without overemphasizing either of these two musical influences. Ms. Zayas shows great sensitivity to the music, by keeping the precise balance. This is a wonderful recording for all those who want to enjoy great Cuban classical piano music which is truly Classical. Those who, perhaps, want to dance by Zayas' interpretation of Lecuona will be sorely disappointed. However, if you want to enjoy truly Cuban classical piano music, in which all the musical elements, as intended by the composer, are drawn from the keyboard in a most elegant, balanced and beautiful manner, then you will enjoy this recording as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars "In praise of a true artist".......2001-05-06

As a music lover and aficionado, I was amused, to say the least, by the recent barrage of disinformation that has taken place regarding Juana Zayas's recording of Cuban music. To the insightful observer, however, the disinformation in question obviously comes from a single source and it is every bit as malicious as it is desperate.... Very pathetic indeed! Ms. Zayas's artistry and enormous talent have been amply demonstrated in her concerts and recordings as well as praised by the most eminent and demanding critics, period.

1 out of 5 stars NO REFINEMENT, NO CLASS, TOTALLY OVER-RATED RECORDING.......2001-05-04

What a total failure. Complete and total vulgarity! No kind of tone whatsover-no technique, no phrasing-hesitations and pauses galore facilitating lack of technical and musical prowess. Inner voices-where? There is NO voice. There is NOTHING stylistically Cuban, 19th century or otherwise about this artist's rendering. It's truly amazing that a pianist who managed to produce a decent Chopin Etude CD (extremely overrated however, and possibly produced through enormous editing) would dish up this kind of junk. Ms. Zayas is a good pianist, but she is NOT an important ARTIST. She plays piano well, but leaves no artistic statement.

There are numerous recordings of the Cervantes that are much better. Fernandez, Pelaez, even Spengler's recordings of these works are 100 times better. Nothing to praise here: phrasing, pedaling, sound, and interpretations are routine at best. The Caturla..not much to compare them with in recording availability. But the Lecuona is the just awful.

I thank GOD for the recordings of Tirino on Lecuona. Zayas has no taste or refinement in these works. Soupy, gobbledy goop that is affected, mannered, and full of ego with lack of technique is her legacy here. Subtelties-where? how? How could anyone with an ear possibly even imagine this better than Tirino's Lecuona Danzas Cubanas on BIS label? Tirino's discs have refinement, poise, style, class, rich ringing beautiful tone, aristocratic refinement of sound, and technique that one just doesen't hear in pianists today-he's a World Class ARTIST. It seems frankly a bit odd to see such negative comments about him-and only here-since he has received accolades world-wide. I agree, Tirino's recordings are also uncannily similar to Lecuona's own on RCA-LA COMPARSA especially. He understands the contrasts necessary to the danza form, projecting the Lecuona style better than anyone. We might not even be having a resurgence of Lecuona's music had it not been for him and his irreproachable recordings. BIS' audiophile sound is known throughout world: The sound on this disc however sounds like she is playing underwater off the Florida coast!

I suggest the Fernandez and Pelaez recordings for Cervantes over Zayas. For Lecuona-Tirino has recorded the music in 5 Volumes on BIS, one better than the next-clearly the choice here. I really like Lecuona's own on RCA/BMG to have with Tirino's.

Don't waste your time, money, or ears on this disc here.
