The sound of Eels' Electro-Shock Blues, the follow-up to the band's intriguing Beautiful Freak, reflects a year in which leader Mark "E" Everett suffered the loss of his sister to suicide as well as the illness of his mother and other tragedies. The music's hushed, sometimes dark sound and Everett's earnest vocals are often more convincing than his diary-entry lyrics, despite the power and daring inherent in describing illness in alt-pop settings that recall everything from hip-hop to Tom Waits. --Rickey Wright

The one to listen!.......2006-01-15
From time to time I go and purchase music. I consult what I consider to be the most informative and reliable publications in the industry. Why? So I don't get burned!! Many is the times when I have purchased a CD that did not quite reach higher levels of listening enjoyment. I am very happy to say that the EELS Electro Shock Blues is a beauty of a CD. Happy to discover such a talented force is alive and well in the free world. Comparisons to other bands is just not going to cut it. EELS do their own thing. Yes, similarities will always exist. After all, they are just so many notes available to work with but this band sure earns high praises. Which by the way made me realize how little I know of what is going on out there in terms of good music. I ended up buying 12 CD's and If you read this far then please consider buying Beta Band, those guys are TASTY!!! I was so impressed with Electro Shock Blues that I will in the near future buy Blinking Lights and....., must say that Electro Shock Blues received on the average a little more ratings than their next endeavor. Anyone who is seriously interested on acquiring a great album look no further. Electro Shock Blues is a timeless masterpiece, as good as they come!
Not odd..........2005-11-01
Not oddly moving, just groovy but with an edge, and sophistication to challenge your aesthetics but rhythyms to appeal to your inner britney spears...top quality
Shocking Blues.......2005-09-26
Everyone who knows the Eels knows their frontman/leader/ect doesn't flinch from writing songs about the darker things in life. Even so this is probably the bands darkest album too date. Starting with a song about his sisters suicide and then a song about her funeral its hard to imagine a bleaker start to an album, especially when its backed by the Eels twisted alt pop. Its pretty accurate to describe 'Electro-Shock Blues' as being a concept album, all about death, depression and even the light at the end of the tunnel. In the hands of another band like Marylin Manson or Pink Floyd this might by an unbearably selfrighteous, indulgent and wallowing experience, but E has just enough off kilter humor and quirkiness to pull it off without every giving unto those tendencies. Who else could write a song about watching your world crumble around you and going insane and include line like "voices tell me I am the sh*t" as E does on 'My Descent Into Madness'.
Probably the least 'rock' of the Eels albums, 'Electro-Shock Blues' is all twisted jazz, occasional drum loops, distorted violins, and breathy vocals. Like most Eels albums its got weird nursery rhyme quality, but this time its darker and more nightmarish. Theres only one real break for a pop song in 'Last Stop: This Town' which lightens up the gloomy mood and direction the album is taking up to this point. From their it quitely builds until finally there is relief at the end with 'PS You Rock My World', which its lucky because the confessions of E are so depressing that by the end your in desperate need of relief. Its not an easy album to listen to, and take really appreciate it it needs to be listened too in full, but as E will tell you the good things in life never come easy.
one of many masterpieces from mark oliver everett.......2005-07-19
When "Electro Shock Blues" was released almost seven years ago, it was pronounced as certain by the critics the this record would be the eels' and Mark Oliver Everett (aka E's) masterpiece. "Electro Shock Blues" was one of the highlights of the late 90s in music and it is certainly one of the eels' best recorded works, but E, like Neil Young, is a career artist who keeps churning out five star-worthy records, each succeeding release differing in sound and lyrical tone from the previous--just look at the differences between this album and the next album, "Daisies of the Galaxy."
Many people who have not heard this record, but have read about it or heard about it would probably be turned off, dismissing it as "depressing," which is not true. E, himself, once said that "Electro Shock Blues" would probably be one of the most positive albums he would ever make. Many of the songs are meditations on death and dying, but the songs come across as uplifting in many ways, as a therapeutic response from E. The circumstances surrounding many of the songs on this album are truly tragic, but much in the way of great art has come from pain and suffering.
Many of the songs rank among E's best. Ranging from starkly minimal cuts, like the opener "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor" to the slick-sounding, singalong worhthy "Last Stop: This Town," "Electro Shock Blues" is a veritable cornucopia of sounds. Lyrically, the songs feature some of E's best poetic couplets; just check out the whimsical "3 Speed" and take in the words there, for a glimpse of E's monumental talent as a songwriter.
Not cheerful, excellent song writing and muscianship.......2005-07-10
As the title indicates, this collection deals with depression, hospitalization, cancer, funerals. Lots of original hooky songs. Too dissonant for happy cupcake type personalities. Lots of talent here.

The three electronic, hip-hop-influenced albums Herbie Hancock recorded during the 1980s--of which Future Shock was the first, followed by Sound System and Perfect Machine--have been the most maligned by fans of his enormously influential '60s-era jazz work. The reissue of all three albums, each newly remastered with bonus mixes and new liner notes, makes it clear Hancock was much more than simply a jazz pianist reaching for a pop crossover audience. To be sure, Hancock got his pop hit with Future Shock's "Rockit," and there's plenty on Future Shock that sounds dated, from the early 80's synthesizer tones to the almost consciously stiff-sounding hip-hop beats that permeate every track. But dig a little deeper, and it's clear this is supremely intelligent dance music, with a combination of producer-bassist Bill Laswell's Kraftwerk-influenced industrial production and Latin percussionist Daniel Ponce's Bata drum, Pete Cosey's screeching guitar--which echoes his work with Miles Davis's 1970s band--Sly Dunbar's rock-solid funk drumming, and Grand Mixer D.S.T.'s radical (for the time) turntable scratching. And, of course, there's "Rockit", the track that introduced a generation of young listeners to Hancock and break-dancing robots in music videos. All in all, a reissue well worth revisiting. --Ezra Gale
Customer Reviews:
I, Robot.......2007-01-26
The legs of one of the robots in the fantastic video for Rockit says it all; grooving to the funky beat while moving in a tight circle, keeping in step with the turntable scratches and driving the beat where dub, hip-hop and jazz became a new dynamic in the studio. Everybody dance now!
Future Shock was a new sensation when released in early 1983, as Herbie Hancock (and his Rockit band) & Bill Laswell teamed up to deliver electronics with funk, fusion and a sprinkling of avant-garde.
Rockit garnered a Grammy award for best R&B instrumental performance, while the video captured five awards - including Video of the Year - in the first MTV Video Music Awards show.
The CD has five cuts sandwiched between Rockit and Rockit (Mega Mix), the latter not on the original release. A true gem is Future Shock, a Curtis Mayfield composition. Earth Beat and Rough pump the funk through the speakers, while Hancock lets the jazz notes do the talking in T.F.S. and Autodrive.
That the collaboration of Hancock and Laswell was unable to reproduce the magic in subsequent releases speaks greatly about the quality found in Future Shock.
Is it HERBIE or is it LASWELL?.......2006-08-10
Herbie's alway's had his hand on the pulse of music, especially cutting edge stuff. He hooked up with Bill Laswell just when Laswell started an incredible run of "production jobs" that continues on through the 90's, and beyond. It's hard to figure just WHO get's the most credit here. Who cares? If you like it, dig! If you don't think it's "jazzy" enough, that's cool too, because it's very hip-hop/beats oriented (no guest "raps" but some cool soul vocals). A jazz artist incorporating the use of turntables and a whole array of synths and such-- read the liner notes with all the folks who appear here. One can't expect "Kind of Blue" now can you? Get funked up!
The bonus track is not so great........2006-05-19
I remember this album from when it first came out. I was just a kid then and bought the album because of the video for Rockit. I soon came to like all of the other tracks on the album as well. People I knew at the time expressed mixed opinions about the album, such as whether or not it was "jazz" or if it was worthy of Herbie Hancock's reputation as a "legit" musician or whatever. But like another reviewer on this site has said, this CD is pretty much full of mediocre R&B filler. But in my opinion, it is worth listening to. I like it. I'm not a serious music critic, so for people with a more casual interest I would say that this album is a lot of fun and worthy of your purchase price.
However... the bonus track is not very good at all. It really seems like a lame attempt to take up time on the CD. What it is is another version of Rockit with tons of extra (and might I add, profane) sound bites and samples piled on top of the mix. On my player I always skip this track. But the rest is still pretty cool in my humble opinion.
Excellent, risk taking album from Herbie Hancock.......2006-04-10
I'd like to defend this album, because between his more mellow jazz albums of the 70s and what he's doing now in 2005-2006, this 1983 album is still one one of my favorites from Herbie Hancock. Herbie took a big risk with going for the hip-hop sound and he succeeded. Every one of the six original songs are dynamite, are edgy and very creative for that period. I still love Rockit, perhaps one of Herbie's finest performances. Its mix of urban jazz and the turntable scratches of hip-hop was very unique. It has some hard hitting beats that could even rival most of Run-DMC and LL Cool J's albums. I couldn't stop playing the 45 single of the single and album versions for several months! It's still played over 2 decades later! The video for that song was phenomenal with the art direction and the marionettes moving to the song's beats. The album's very keyboard oriented, but Hancock kept the jazz style intact on most of the songs. I don't think he sold out,as some purists say. I think this album helped make him a more respected jazz musician and artist later on. Even if the album's massive success took him by surprise, he did it with class and he is still respected today. Very creative, chance-taking and wonderfully performed and done!
DO YOU NEED TO ASK?.......2005-10-24
IF THE NAME HERBIE HANCOCK DOESN'T GET YOU TO BUY IT,THEN "ROCK IT' MUST. REMEMBER THE VIDEO?

A Sexy Mouth to Taste It.......2006-06-20
This really isn't a great collection of music, but it's a really interesting CD. It's like one really good but poorly recorded song, the introduction to one really good song, and some interesting electronic gibberish that would work better as filler between good songs on an album.
Electro-Shock is noisy and dark. In the last track the production is so loose it's almost terrible, but it's good like that. It seems natural as what it is. The production on the first track sparkles and rumbles. The other songs mix around recorded nonsense, computer singing, and lots of looped beats that cut each other up and audibly fold and distort and conflict.
It's music to go crazy to. With a grin, and dancing like a twiggy freak in the rain holding a flare in your teeth or making out with a sweaty girl who's holding a knife. Or maybe it sounds like a headache.
As a side note: anybody who really got into Saddle Creek bands Bright Eyes, Cursive, and the Faint should really heart this at least once, just for a little perspective.

Spark me Out!.......2000-02-23
Besides "Bonsai Superstar", "Electro Shock for President" is one of the best Brainiac CD's, even though it's only about 15 minutes long, it's well WELL worth it. Mr. Fingers and Fresh New Eyes are very catchy and you will catch yourself singing these all the time. I would recommend Brainiac if you like bands such as Sonic Youth, Radiohead, and Nirvana.
great punk with electronic sensabilities.......1999-03-05
my favorite brainiac album around, mostly because it is their darkest. clever lyrics and impressively constructed tracks-- it is unfortunate we won't be hearing anything new from them, as they were the best thing to ever come out of dayton, ohio.

Album Description
2003 release from this Australian experimental Jazz trio (piano, bass and drum). Keeping with their musical formula, this album consists of one 60+ minute track that begins with a simple, yet melodic, idea and then builds upon it for the next hour, creating a sonic landscape that enchants the listener as it unfolds, challenging the heart, mind and soul of Rock and Jazz music. Although the band have won numerous Jazz awards in their homeland, they are one of the few bands of that genre that have been wholeheartedly embraced by Rock audiences around the world. Many critics have even compared The Necks to original Krautrock bands like Can. Fish Of Milk.

starts with introspective melancholic keyboard refrain, and other instruments unhurriedly, incrementally appear, until it becomes an awesome prog-house-rock-jazz-psych jam. never cluttered and not overstaying its welcome, this hour long track is a very, very nice listen all the way through.

Xtraordinary!.......2002-10-23
Herbie Hancock is normally a jazz misician but he made a few electro dance albums back in the 80's, here's the first one including the great hit "Rockit", a funky song with synths, beats and scratching of a disc. Back then when this was released there wasn't so many dance groups so this was almost a brand new sound. It's really fascinating to listen to this Album again, it's all great original dance tracks from another world. "Future Shock" is a little more funky but sound like a typical soul song, it's a good remake though. "Earth Beat" sound a little like "Rockit" with many drums and beats. "TFS is one of my favorites, a catchy dance track with nice melody. The other 2 are also good "Autodrive" and "Rough". Unfortunateky there is only 6 songs on the album, i would have loved to see some more., thereafter i can only give this one 4 stars. But if you won't something diffrent get this anyway.
Next Style Please.......1999-06-27
Herbie Hancock, whatever else his faults, has always attempted to try new things. This doesn't always work out ("Monster"), but here he caused many people to sit up and notice. He and his new partner Bill Laswell serve up six great slices of jazz/funk/electronica, ideal for dancing *or* listening. Even the vocal item, a remake of Curtis Mayfield's "Future Shock", holds up well - something Herbie Hancock's vocal numbers hardly ever do. Highly recommended.
Breakdancers unite!.......1998-12-05
This album totally rocks! There isn't hardly a bad track on this album! The first track just makes you want to jump on out of your chair & just do headspins, windmills, helicopters & locks! Any fans of breakdance or electrofunk music MUST own this album!

First I'll provide the track listing:
1. Cancer for the Cure
2. Fingertips part III
3. Going to Your Funeral part I
4. Efil's God
5. Souljacker part I
6. My Beloved Monster
7. Novocaine for the Soul

9. Last Stop: This Town
10. Everything's Gonna be Cool this Christmas
Bonus Tracks:
11. Flower
12. Dead of Winter
13. Electro-Shock Blues
14. The Medication is Wearing Off
15. Climbing to the Moon
The first 10 tracks are from a few different venues but basically a little harder/rockish. The crowd heckels, yelling for the only song they know and when they get it they don't know how to react to it. As the liner notes say "At least the guy yelling 'Novacaine' isn't yelling Judas."
I had never heard an Eels live show before purchasing this and now i can't wait. A lot of energy, great sound, and they mix it up quite well. These recordings come from when "Electro-shock Blues" had just come out and they were introducing it in Europe. I love the 50's surf-rock variation of "Novacaine" and the very satisfactory version of "My Beloved Monster." Featuring a random fan on tambarine on "Everything is Gonna Be Cool This Christmas." There's also a very early take on Souljacker and it's really interesting to see how the song developed.
The second half of the disc is taken from a few more European venues and feels a little more intimate. Half the time it just sounds like E is up there with a guitar and that's it; no other instruments backing him. I actually like the second half more because of the song selection and the sound quality. Not to make it sound like the first halve's sound was bad; it's excellent. But the bonus stuff is the type of thing where you can just imagine E, on stage, just his guitar and a spotlight.
Definately something that ALL E and Eels fans should pick up. The comic-style liner notes about the creation of the band and the touring are worth the bucks anyway. Good stuff!

Major Disappointment! :(.......2007-06-01
I am in total agreement with 'Raveric' on the quality. If you listen carefully you can hear the odd pop n' click and this tell me this album is nothing more than ripped off vinyl and released on cd. I was really looking forward to this cd but my electro mp3 collection sounds far superior. Why oh why did they give us the short (less than 4min) version of 'return of captain rock' but give us the FULL instrumental version??? This cd doesn't even include 'cosmic glide'. Thankfully i have a pretty good mp3 of the 12" but it would of been nice to have it included.
Now if only someone out there would release a double/triple cd set of full 12" versions of all the classic electro with studio quality!
excellent.......2006-07-03

Great music YES, great quality NO.......2006-04-22
Without a doubt I love the music on this Captian Rock collection, but come on, with all the technology available, how hard can it be to remaster/restore the music in at least acceptable quality?
I bought this cd for replacing my own recordings on tape and original vinyl, only to find out that even my 20 years old tapes are in better shape than this cd. Oke, the dub-version of the "Return of Captain Rock" sound fine, but the (only 3:58 long) vocal version sounds like something played on My first Sony...
To make this long story short, a great collection with a very, very poor soundquality and not worth your hard earned bucks!
