Mexican crooner Cristian possesses a swooning, dramatic voice that, when paired with the right material, can transport listeners to another world. He hit career highs on glittering pop singles such as "No Podrás" and "Nuncan Voy a Olvidarte," but Azul finds Cristian simply rehashing the overbaked balladry that weighed down many of his previous efforts. The title track and first single ride a wistful rock groove, but much of Azul is drenched in overproduced sentimentality that drains the album of any real emotion. Producer Kike Santander has done fine work on albums from Thalia, Gloria Estefan, and merenguera Gisselle, but his efforts here are bland at best. The only notable exception is "Gli Amori/Los Amores," a delicate ballad sung in Spanish and Italian. The song's highs and lows flow naturally and offer a glimmer of Cristian's potential in his still-evolving career. --Joey Guerra

She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

I love a classical voice singing this type of mustic, or sacred (from the operas (in English), or, out of print sacred. Wish I could find a source for some of my old tapes (some recorded from 78s) of artists like Jerome Hines (Holy City, 1962-3, 78 record I transferred to tape), Russel Davis (1970 or early 8os record I coped, of tape my Dad had copied), William Harness, Kathleen Battle, etc. etc. I enjoy a wide range of music, but had operatic training, so understand the requirements for superior vocal skill. John Denver had much of the quality. Music for me is part of the fabric of life.

One of his first albums of "popular" songs and one of the best of the songs we have loved for years with a fresh, new Domingo treatment. Just as his album with John Denver was a something new for him, these songs are out of the opera world. You'll never hear any of them performed by anyone up to the "gold standard" of Domingo. That being said, I love this album, but - the accent gets in the way on the English songs. You have to be able to accept the accented English and just listen to the gorgeous voice singing some very romantic songs. I highly recommend!

As much as I enjoy listening to Placido Domingo's popular recordings this is not one of his best performances. Missing the full-blooded belting that can be heard on his other albums ("Be My Love" for example). The orchestration is very mediocre and uninspired.
For a romantic mood, "Perhaps Love" (simply fabulous) is much better choice.

If you truly want to touch someone's heart, give this as a Valentine's gift. I received the CD last year and I love every minute. It makes a loving gift of one of the greats. With such a long career you would think that Placido would disappoint. So far it hasn't happened. This year my honey and I will see him in concert! Another Valentine's day wish come true.

Glorious combination: Ernesto Lecuona and Placido Domingo!
Ernesto Lecuona was a virtuoso pianist and a composer of both classical and popular music. He wrote compositions for piano, opera, zarzuela (Spanish light opera), movie scores, and popular songs. He incorporated the rhythms of Cuban popular song (including afro-cuban) into his music. Placido Domingo and the Royal Philharmonic Orquestra provide a wonderful introduction to Lecuona's music. Songs like "Siboney," and "Malaguena" are standards in the repertoire of opera singers and require great voices to do them justice. "Maria la O" is from Lecuona's zarzuela of the same name. The songs on this CD are gorgeous, Placido Domingo sings them beautifully, and the accompaniment is wonderful. The two songs with more pronounced afro-cuban rhythms--"Canto Karabali" and "La comparsa"--are less suited to this kind of production, but the other 9 songs are so wonderful, I can overlook this. A real bonus--this CD includes liner notes and complete lyrics in Spanish, with translations into English, French and German.

The sources for the 20 songs of this album are:
six each from "Canciones de mi Padre", "Mas Canciones", and "Frenesi", and
one each from "Hasten Down the Wind" and "Winter Light."

Your enjoyment of this CD will depend on which other CDs you already own.

As a kid, growing up in LA, I was unconscioulsy registering several cultural influences, chief amongst them surf music, then rock, then perhaps Mexican music, via a UHF channel I used to watch, primarily for the bull fighting, but secondarily because I liked Mariachi music, and some class trips to Alvarado Street.

This CD takes me back to those roots. It's an amalgam of her canciones to Ms Rondstadt's beloved padre, which have become classics of the idiom, plus a few of her standards and offshoots from the past few years. . She's probably sold more PBS subscriptions via these recordings than any other entertainer, amd for good reason. She's brilliant! The songs are non pareil! Her execution is flawless! The accompaniments/arrangements are note perfect, as well! What's not to love?

The CD also includes some of her better covers of other songwriters like Dylan ( A great rendition of Tom Thumb's Blues, one of my favortie songs of all time), "I go to Pieces," from her "We Ran" Album///just a great mix of one great artist's oevre! It's better than a greatest hits mix, by far. Highly listenable! Highly collectable!!
Check out her paean on to Lady Day on "Fools Rush In," in particular. The vocals and the arrangement are un canny! (sic!)

Do take notice that this is not just a compilation of her two Canciones CDs. There is a great melange here. What a great chanteuse this lady is! She's taken the mantle from Ms Peggy Lee and Ms Rosemary Clooney, et al. She's the real deal!

Ay que lindas son estas canciones. How wonderful to hear Linda Ronstadt tapping into the roots of her Mexican father. How joyful to hear the melodious notes of "Charreada" from this soulful diva. You feel transported to another time and place with these wonderful boleros, mariachi and ballads. "Cuando Me Querias Tu" is filled with haunting restraint and expression, and the devestating, achingly beautiful "Siempre Hace Frio" which has been covered by many different artists, is especially stirring here. Another tune worth noting is "Piel Canala." I found myself doing a modified rumba at the Borders listening station. This really makes you think of classic 1950s romantic music from Mexico. Enjoy this. Ay, it will truly break your heart.

I just got finish listen to this cd and I love it to death she is now one of my new favorite artist in spanish. I love her voice it is very strong and I can't wait to get more.

I give this cd 4 9/10 stars because:

1) In the liner notes she incorrectly describes the song Piel Canela as one of the most beautiful songs from México. Although this song has been recorded by artists of many countries, the Original Hit Version was recorded by its composer the late Bobby Capó, a legendary singer/songwriter/entertainer from Puerto Rico.

2) The Spanish version of Blue Bayou( Lago Azul) should have included, she still sings it in her concerts.

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

Outstanding, melancholic, soothing release here. And I must say that if you're a Bebel Gilberto fan, I'm pretty sure you'll want to get your hands on this. Likewise, if you're into Thievery Corporation's Eighteenth Street Lounge - and dig Isabela Antenna's vocals, this is for you. Helena is perhaps most popular in France or Japan - her full name is Helena Noguerra and before this, the most popular song she released was "Bikini".

The vocals on this cd are amazing. She's so smooth, and she never takes her voice far out of range. You don't have shreiking or attempts to stray out of range, Helena just lets the music come to her - her style is soft and the accompaniment is true to this "genre". But - this is a rarity because I can put this on in the background and literally play the cd through to the end. Even the more upbeat tracks - like "M'en aller" and "Vem Aqui" never take away from the general feel of the cd.

Fans may have heard her tracks if they collected Nueva Bossa Nova or Brazilectro 4 or Paris Lounge 2. Those comps. had a remix of Morrer Nos Seus Bracos and Paris Lounge had a remix of M'en Aller. While I for one honestly enjoyed the remix more than the original here on this cd (of Morrer Nos Seus Bracos), the remix isn't so so far off from the original - and the original you can tell blends more into the feature cd.

Be warned though - this CD may not be for everyone. It definitely has a trippy, chillout feel - not what you want to put in if you're trying to "snap out of it" and get pumped up. But to me, put it in the car on the way into the cd for a romantic feel - it's perfect. This is offered as an Import too on Amazon however the import is twice as expensive.

In 1991, just a year before she hit it big in Europe with Miss Perfumado, Cesaria Evora hit her stride in Paris with this warm and wonderful recording of morna music from Cape Verde. Produced with a light touch by José de Silva, Mar Azul is still close to the nightclub, to the smoke and whiskey roots of her music as she sang it back home; the great band seamlessly mixes jazz, blues, swing, Latin, and African music into something unique for its time. It is lush yet simple, beautiful and gritty and clean, and totally about this voice. An acoustic guitar or piano rules each track, with bass, light percussion, and touches of violin, clarinet, harmonica, or horn just brushing up against it. This is really where Evora developed comparisons to Billy Holiday, in her ability to sound both fragile and tough. MAR AZUL by CESARIA EVORA is just a beautiful cd that I havent stopped listening to since I bought it a few weeks ago. I have 5 of her cd's and I like nothing better to do than just lie back and relax and listen to her music. When I hear her voice and the music, I few that I am being trasported to a different land far from where I presently am. I have to say, it is her voice that truly stands out on her albums. Some have compared her to
Billie Holiday, and I think that might be a fair comparison. I can't think of any weak spots on this album, each songs is just so great. This is a must have for any serious music fan. I also recommend CAFE ATLANTICO and CABO VERDE to add to your collection. I dont think that you will be disappointed.

As someone who lovingly possesses all of Cesaria Evora's albums, I am tempted to call "Mar Azul" her best. It's certainly the best introduction to a wonderful artist, a true world treasure. "Miss Perfumado" is a close second, and "Cabo Verde" is superb. But for seductive dreaminess it's "Mar Azul" all the way.

i fell in love with cesaria evora during my years of graduate studies in detroit. perhaps it was the general romantic-dismal mood of most midwestern cities (detroit falling more towards dismal than romantic) that brought me to appreciate the sweet melancholy sound of her voice. a woman who travelled to paris from cabo verde, a small island off the coast of west africa, subsequently winning the hearts of the french and soon the hearts of many people throughout the world.

in an epoch of the 'gorgeous pre-pubescent nymphette singer/songwriters' its wonderful to hear from an artist whose voice transcends the superficial boundaries of media-hype. an elder three-hundered pound dark-skinned island woman who i once only recognized as 'the barefoot diva'

Despite his popularity with Magneto, he didn't use his former's groups name to achieve success. He is music style is far from the sugar-coated ballads of mexican pop. There are a few ballads in this production, but are more up-beat. The style sounds more like Moenia, but his is not a rip-off. He is one of the best Mexican singers in the genre. The songs on this cd are perfect to listen on a calm Sunday afternoon or after work. Give it a try!

I got this album last March. It was 2 years ago first I heard Alan's song on the radio. It was "Si pudiera volar" and I was so impressed by that beautiful song. After a while, I could get his album AZUL and listened. All songs are so great and I liked. Especially I like those songs:"El aire que me das", "Volvere volveras""Si pudiera volar""Liuvia""Como un violin"and"Amor de luz". I think the beautiful ballade songs suit him very nicely. His powerful, heartfelt and romantic voice makes us(me and you) feel relieved and courage. You'll like it. To tell the truth, I'd like to get his new album MI REALIDAD as soon as possible.

I've always admired Alan's beautiful voice. I was Magneto's #1 fan back in the early 90s. Alan sang most of the group's best songs. Now he has come back to sing on his own and he's even better than before. Alan has a very beautiful, heartfelt, and full of feeling voice. Weather its a soft romantic or upbeat tempo, Alan's style will capture your heart. My favorite song from the CD is Como un Violin. Alan definetly deserves to be recognized, I would say more so than Ricky or Enrique. Anyway, I'm happy for Alan's comeback and hope to continue listening to his songs for a long time. Alan, si alguna vez lees esto, recuerda que tienes un talento divino y que es para siempre.

Mexican crooner Cristian possesses a swooning, dramatic voice that, when paired with the right material, can transport listeners to another world. He hit career highs on glittering pop singles such as "No Podrás" and "Nuncan Voy a Olvidarte," but Azul finds Cristian simply rehashing the overbaked balladry that weighed down many of his previous efforts. The title track and first single ride a wistful rock groove, but much of Azul is drenched in overproduced sentimentality that drains the album of any real emotion. Producer Kike Santander has done fine work on albums from Thalia, Gloria Estefan, and merenguera Gisselle, but his efforts here are bland at best. The only notable exception is "Gli Amori/Los Amores," a delicate ballad sung in Spanish and Italian. The song's highs and lows flow naturally and offer a glimmer of Cristian's potential in his still-evolving career. --Joey Guerra

Another reviewer wrote that he could not believe that Cristian was serious about the title song when he saw the video for it. I haven't seen the video, but I had the same thought when I heard the title song, "Azul." This song has every single cliche of the 1980s power pop sound. And I do mean EVERY single cliche! It is really amazing to hear all of those cliches in one song, especially one that was NOT produced in the 1980s. That's why I think that this song and its musical arrangement might be a satire of 1980s American pop music. Either that, or Cristian loved that style of music when he was growing up (he was a child and teenager in the 1980s) and decided that he wanted to record a song that had that particular sound. The musical arrangement is so different from everything else on the album that it just doesn't seem possible that this was done seriously. I think it's either satire, or just a fun and silly thing Cristian wanted to do.

I don't have this album, and I thank god I don't. I saw the video for "Azul" and I really thought it was a joke. My sister and I laughed and laughed, especially at the bad hair, and the white pants that he precedes to wet himself in. I've never been a fan of Cristian, but this one tops them all. The song was HORRIBLE. There is no emotion in his singing, and the music is a very cheesy psuedo-rock. Of course, when my sister and I realized Cristian was being SERIOUS, we were mortified. If you want to listen to some talented singers/musicians, check out Ely Guerra, Julieta Venegas,Natalia LaFourcade, Aterciopelados,La Oreja De Van Gogh, or Ana Torroja. Anyone who finds this music appealing obviously sees music as something superficial, not a life-changing force. *Rock On With Your Frock On*
