Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Eeww!.......2006-06-19
This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!
this land is your land.......2006-04-17
to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".
America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30
The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.
Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12
This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.
It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.
There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

Best of Episodes IV - VI.......2007-05-16
It has been said before -- if you want the best all on one CD, then this is the best sampler to get.
Conducted by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, there shines through an obvious love of the material being played. These are among the best versions I've ever heard of these songs and the production quality is first rate.
My only slight niggle would be that at times, the horn section seem to come through a little too strong, but that might just be my tastes and my sound system. And it is not enough to keep me from giving it 5 stars. All the best from 3 of the best movie soundtracks in the past 30 years.
If you don't want to buy each score, get this compilation.......2006-09-29
This is a great representation of the excellent music Williams wrote for the original trilogy. Many of these tracks are completely fantastic. There are a couple of tracks that I wouldn't have added to this compilation in favor of adding others (the sand people track is pretty boring) and the cantina music ends with some really weird sounding synth effects or something, but the rest of the album is great. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could.
Star Wars Music Sampler.......2003-07-12
The Star Wars Trilogy: John Williams Conducts John Williams is a 13-track "sampler" of selected orchestral arrangements from the 1977-83 "Classic" Episodes of George Lucas' space opera set "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." Not to be confused with either the Varese Sarabande 1983 recording with a similar title, this 1990 Sony Classical offering showcases the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the composer.
While none of the material here is surprising - we HAVE heard all these themes before in the London Symphony Orchestra-performed original soundtracks in their various incarnations - the Skywalker Symphony (a group of talented musicians assembled especially for this performance) performs Williams' concert hall arrangements with clarity and love for the material. There was also an attempt to add more variety to the 13 tracks to further avoid confusion with the other "Star Wars Trilogy" single CD collection. The Cantina Band (that jazzy Benny Goodman style bauble from Star Wars) and the bouncy The Little People are here, as well as the more "traditional" Main Title, Princess Leia's Theme, Yoda's Theme, and the famous Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme). Particularly impressive is the concert hall arrangement of The Throne Room/Finale, which is very different from the film version.
While I prefer the individual film scores from either the Soundtrack Anthology or the Special Edition collections, for listeners on the go, younger music lovers, or newcomers to John Williams' music, The Star Wars Trilogy: John Williams Conducts John Williams is still worth a listen.
You just want more!.......2003-03-04
That's right. When it ends, you just want more, and more.
I gave it a 4 stars rating, only because of this. I have all the music from Star Wars, and definitely I think it's a crime to make a compilation from such a terrific soundtrack. You MUST have the entire score.
However, if you can only get this one (as it was my case around 10 years ago), it is an excellent example. For a limited space, I would have chosen the same themes.

Customer Reviews:
A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19
Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!

Toddler likes the blues.......2006-11-06
My toddler likes the music on this CD. When I first heard it, I wasn't sure it would go over well---my husband is not crazy about the music---but my 2 year old likes it! The songs are catchy and the music is nice and easy listening.
Great Music - not just for kids.......2005-10-12
This is great blues music!! My husband and I love it just as much as the kids and we play it even when they're not around.
If B.B. approves, so do I!.......2004-03-17
This is a GREAT cd. My 2 year old has never liked being in the car so I've been listening to elmo, bear & pooh for 2 years. That's fine, it's fun, but this is a wonderful change of pace - she loves it & so do I! Especially pancake man :-) Done in a blues style VERY much like blues music for adults, but with lyrics little ones can understand and enjoy. To the gentleman who didn't think it was authentic enough blues...I bet B.B. and the rest of the crew on this cd would beg to differ...as does my family.
GREAT CD!.......2002-06-26
This is a great CD! The music is more adult like but the lyrics are directed to kids. Fishin' Blues and Flying Lessons are excellent!
sappy silly disappointing.......2002-03-19
I wanted a good cd to accompany Buckwheat Zydeco in my sons collection. With the starpower that this cd's artists have, I was expecting much more. The songs would be good if the arrangements were less candy coated and more gritty and more like the guitar driven blues that my son loves.Buckwheat Zydeco is the lone bright spot on the disc. I only wish I could return it to get a different disc but instead, it is a drink coaster for a sipper cup. over and out

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

The Warsaw Village Band's debut international release, People's Spring, has echoes of the familiar in its heady modern interpretations of ancient Polish Folk music: klezmer, Scandinavian-sounding melodies, singing that sometimes recalls the Bulgarian Women's Choir in its otherworldly harmony, and some trance-inducing backbeats. But it's ultimately unclassifiable, skipping genres and seamlessly melding tradition and experimentation in music that upholds its folk roots while not being bound by them. Using ancient and little-heard traditional Polish instruments like the suka--a Polish fiddle from the 16th century--and the Polish dulcimer, the Warsaw Village Band crafts their own soundscapes, infusing folk tradition with a thoroughly modern attitude. "Chassidic Dance," with its Jewish melodies and trip-hop slanted drumming, and the dirges "At My Mother's" and "Clear Water" achieve an organic fusion tinged with the psychedelic. Meanwhile, the group's lyrics amplify its contemporary leanings: "Who Is Getting Married" takes a feminist stance on marriage and "Cranes" sets an anarchistic protest song to bombastic rhythm. The group's mix of old and new styles is so complete in fact, that the last two songs on the album--dance floor-ready remixes by two Polish DJ's--are almost redundant, mixing electronic beats with Polish folk melodies in a manner not all that different from the organic remixing the Warsaw Village Band realizes throughout the whole album. --Ezra Gale

fantastic stuff!.......2007-04-02
is that thunder on the horizon? nope, it's the warsaw village band making a storm of music. this is the best world music disc i have heard in several years. they call it "hardcore folk," and that seems about as good a label as any. this is powerfully emotional music. heavy with a darkly foreboding sound. an intense, ominous vibe. the musical muscle of all those drums lifting up to the sky such a big sound. the mesmerizing trance tones of the fiddles, singing a stark beauty. great eastern eupropean music. about as good as any i have ever heard. highly, highly recommended.
Raw music, full of life!.......2006-03-17
As a Polish American here in the diaspora, it's hard to find quality music of the "motherland" that doesn't sound as cheesy as nachos. But Warsaw Village Band really put together the most original, musically professional, exciting album one could hope for. I was really impressed at the creativity that went into developing the songs, whether it was hints of traditional Indian music, or Klezmer rythm, or the techno remix of "At My Mother's"-all fabulous! The haunting yet prolific bialy glos really is a experience one must listen to at least once in his lifetime.
I personally, can't get enough. Dziekuje!
Warsaw Village Band "People's Spring".......2005-10-14
After seeing WVB at LA's Water Court this summer, I went online to find a place to buy a recording of this phenomenal music. It is folk music for the 21st Century--it is raw and sophisticated, incredibly exciting and some of the most inspirational music I have heard in a long time.
evolved from tradition.......2004-11-19
The band's take on folk music is welcome as an evolution from the traditional forms. The old folks in the remote villages might be a bit surprised by the interpretations, and might barely recognize them, as the original sound would be a bit more sparse. The band's approach is wildly successful: minor keys, odd modes, which give some Polish folk its somewhat primordial, other worldly, viscerally physical flavor. While the mixes are modern etc., the spirit remains true to the roots of the music. The band clearly loves this music. And Warsaw in some sense is a big village
Mesmerizing Traditional Revival Music - Hypnotic Drum Beats.......2004-08-01
The Warsaw Village Band has revived traditional Polish roots music bringing forth the soul of Poland. It is expressed with mesmerizing music, hypnotic rhythms, and haunting vocals. The violin music has an earthy appealing sound ...the drum beats resemble the beating heart of the country.
Track #1 "To You Kasiuna" begins with a cimbalom solo that is highly interpretive and exciting. Next the hypnotic drum beat captures the primordial instincts of the listener - while unique vocal chants bring forth echoes from the past. It makes the listener feel they are participating in a dream, a film that captures life in the village at the turn of the century. Only you are awake and fully aware it is ... a dream. There is feeling of reviving a memory ... of what used to be. There is a tremendously effective gypsy brass band sound, played on the trumpet. The hurdy gurdy adds special intonations of a bygone era, while the drum beat brings into the awareness of here and now.
Track #2 "Chassidic Dance" has the far off sound of a village band playing a highly appealing melody, including the "squeaky" violin playing technique of an Eastern Europe village musician. This music is nostalgic, haunting, and evocative with its "far off" music from another era.
Track #5 "A Red Apple" is ethereal sounding with a beautiful haunting voice of a young female vocalist. This listener would love to know the English translation of this song and learn more about the significance of the red apple ...
This CD has powerful appeal due to the unique interpretations and improvisations which the highly talented Warsaw Village Band apply to traditional music. They love the music of their homeland which is evident in this extraordinairily powerful creative musical endeavor. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Impressive!.......2001-08-21
Great indie release from a indie band. I saw very little of them from VH1's Bands on the Run, but I didn't care too much for the remaining (and untimately winning) bands.
I get the impression that Josh Dodes could have gotten some lessons from Billy Joel or Elton John. There's good qualities of good music in here. Funk, blues, and insightful lyrics.
Don't let the lack of lead guitars fool you -- some of the greatest rock artists were led by pianists -- Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Joel, Elton John and many others...
Hope to see more from Josh Dodes in the future...
Great Cd.......2001-07-21
Very cool CD. If you're looking for something different and especially if you're a fan of funk and keyboards. Great harmonies on the singing as well. Forget the silly TV show and check out a very original band and sound.
Whatever Happened to Musicians.......2001-07-20
This cd is filled with a yuppy, pretentious, "i want to be funky and hip" sound. I bought it after the show 'Bands on the Run' first started, and although they were not even close to my favorite band on the show, I figured I would give them a try. Afterall, they are apparently a New York City bar band. I love those types of musicians. They ussually have a great sound, talent, and phenomenal lyrics. However, the Josh Dode's Band cd was rather poor in its skill level and lyrical content. Each song was the same as the last, in a variety of ways. My advice to a potential buyer is save your money until the band can afford to take some music lessons! There pretentiousness is comparable to the likes and skills of Jimi Hendrix etc... And their confidence in their lyrics is at the level (or so the band believes) of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eddie Vedder, Dan DeFeo and Billy Joel. Once again, save your cash. Go browse some of Billy joel cd's, or Dan DeFeo's 4 disc anthology if you want to get your moneys worth. Those guys have talent. These guys just think they are talented.
Support an up-and-coming talent and buy this album!.......2001-07-17
I've dug Josh Dode's blend of funky, jazzy, piano driven rock ever since I sold him a computer years ago (it's VERY cool to see a fellow Temp slowly realize his potential!). While I truly enjoy his band's music, fans of Billy Joel will TRULY adore this album (which is not to say J.D. rips anyone off). If you don't end up buying this album PLEASE check them out if they play around you - their shows are cheap and all the members put their hearts into their work.
An OK CD from an OK band.......2001-07-16
Like most people, my first exposure to Josh Dodes Band was through VH1's Bands on the Run. And while many of my fellow reviewers seem disappointed with the outcome of the show, I for one am pleased.
But let's put that all aside -- this is about music, not reality television. I like the catchy riffs and poppy vocals that JDB has to offer. However, I have found that if you listen long enough, one song blends into the next until it all seems like one big, mushy song. They could use a little variety in my humble opinion.
I give them three stars -- an average rating for an average band.

Great band at their essential best.......2005-08-23
I seem to be one of the few fans who first met this band in a live bar show, rather than catering to the kiddies, but their mix of humor with touching insight captured my love and has held it for almost 15 years. I don't know why I waited to buy this album, but one of the middle-year albums was over-produced and I got a bit fearful. However, this really captures their original sensibility, and any fan will recognize the voices and harmonies that have always characterized this duo (with a couple guest instruments thrown in along the way). Here there are no joke songs or kid stuff, but just an excellent mix of swinging toe-tappers with poignant thoughtfulness.
Those who are used to the gentle humor of the kid music will enjoy the way that Keith and Ezra bring their big hearts and sunny outlooks to the general themes of good (adult) rock -- dreams about the future, getting through the hard times, love and relationships, etc. I never get tired of an album like this; these guys are operating down where real life is lived. Every song is very strong and this CD keeps finding its way back into my player...
All around talented team..........2005-06-27
As I write this review, my husband and I just returned from seeing the notorious duet at a small venue in the country. It was a rather intimate showing for my first time to see Trout. I can only say wonderful things about these guys. They played for almost two hours straight, peppering the audience with songs from every genre. These guys know how to cover all the bases! They performed kids' songs, love songs, and even some rockin' good tunes.
I digress...
They played a good selection of the songs from Closer to the Truth during the show. I found the songs so entertaining and harmonious that I bought the cd directly after the show and listened the entire way back home. Now that I have witnessed them live, I cannot get enough Trout! This cd is an excellent example of the musical range this duo can cover. The tunes are all catchy and you will find yourself singing along.
These guys may win awards for their children's albums, but they can DEFINITELY win over adults as well.
Only Two Years To Go.......2005-04-20
For my twentieth wedding anniversary, I do not want jewelry; I want to go hear Trout play their grown-up music at a club-anywhere.
This album is part of the reason why. As the mother of a lot of kids, I do love their kids' music, but this album lets me overcome my slight embarrassment at loving a kids' band and say "But, look they do make fabulous 'grown-up' music too.
(Whoever said they were "a parent's guilty pleasure" in a professional review is spot-on)
The elements that make their kids music so great are also present in their adult music. They are immensely listenable. Tuneful and lyrical in places, biting and funny in others. Their adult music also contains that wry wit that makes their kids' stuff so uproarious funny. The fact that they explore many styles of music means that there is a repeatability factor for their albums and they won't get boring.
"Dreaming", "Closer to the Truth", "Alberta Postcard" and "Almost September" paint pictures with both the words and the music. They are poetic and lovely. Then they turn around and give you a great catchy, funny song like "Dangerous" in a completely different style.
The wit shows through in "Old Things" and "After You've Gone" (which is one of my favorite Trout Songs). The first time I heard both, I laughed. The 200th time I heard both, I still got a chuckle, despite the fact that I knew what the punchline was.
Trout Fishing works very hard to make sure their finished product is of top-notch quality. That the songs are well-crafted (I use that phrase a lot when writing about them, but it's true), well-sung, well-played.
So, all in all, this is a great CD (do they make any other kind?)
I was a Trout fan from the moment I heard them play the first note-kids or adult stuff, they never disappoint.
{If you want to see how great their adult music sounds in concert and why I want this as my present, I suggest going to the Kerrville Folk Festival webpage and listening to the webcasts of them playing- they ROCK there}
Well Played Kid's Music.......2002-07-18
Trout Fishing In America make kids music, they do it well, and the album probably will stand up to the death play the kids will give it, even with adults, although I highly doubt many adults will listen to it for it's own merits. If you need a CD for your kids to listen to that won't drive you crazy, you have found it, but otherwise this is probably not a CD you want to own.
A return to early Trout.......2000-08-20
Closer to the Truth is a cd that rekindles the emotional music of Trout Fishing in America that was prevelant in Truth is Stranger Than Fishing. Every song on Closer to the Truth is a powerful emotion. There is no bad song on this cd. The albulm starts off with Dreaming which sets the listener into a daydreaming mood and goes straight into a remeniscing melody (Old Things). A light-hearted skeptical shortly follows (Dangerous). You will be humming the chorus all day after that song. Alberta Postcard will paint you a picture and make you want to visit Canada while There You Go will bring you back to the mortality of life. The icing on the cake is the finale (The Sun the Moon and Stars). This is their best song on the CD and will bring you to tears. It took Trout 10 years to match the quality of Truth is Stranger Than Fishing, but Closer to the Truth matches it and then surpasses it in their best Adult albulm to date.
