Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Gorgeous! A ten-point collection !!!.......2007-05-04

It was a very happy fact that when I open the CD pack I found not one but two disks...!! The first one was the CD with 16 beautiful songs and the other was a DVD with a brief resemble of "Los Panchos" including a small group of videos of very old shows (six songs at all).Both are really lovely. If you are a fan of Bolero, this is the collection you must have at home.
It is very difficult to say what song is better than what because when you start reproducing the music, the magics of "Los Panchos" picks you up in time and carry you to the memories of fifties, sixties and even forties!!! in a marvelous sequence of music that surely will make you stay far, far away for a long time. Try listening this CD !! Is truly a perfect sample of the musical production of this "Trio" which is now part of the History of Latin American music.
Many of the recordings have been produced forty, fifty and sixty years ago but the manufacturing process is of the best quality giving as a result a cd with original sound very clean and keeping all that "flavour" and charm which was characteristic of "Los Panchos".
Buy this and enjoy it!!!

OUTSTANDING.......2007-01-10

As much as I love ANA GABRIEL, this album is OUTSTANDING even by her standards. The music is soft, pleasant, and acoustic guitar driven. Every song is a brilliant gem, and beautifully produced. The vocals are a little toned down relative to most of her work, but it complements the music beautifully. When it comes to singing, she's been blesses and anointed by God himself. If you are an Ana Gabriel fan, and don't have this album, don't hesitate any longer. If you are interested in Ana Gabriel, and want to buy your first album, you can't go wrong with this one.

I would actually rate this a 6 on a scale of 1 to 5, but that wasn't an option.

I love Ana Gabriel, but this album shines head and shoulders above her other efforts. The guitar playing on this album displays the power of Mexican guitar and is reminiscient of the playing of such legends as Trio Los Panchos. I have always enjoyed her singing style and it often is pained at just the right moments of the song, which adds a lot of depth and color. Many of the songs are classics, but she has some originals as well that seamlessly fit in with the classics. This is one my grandmother and I could have listened to together!

Outstanding, mellow, romantic, upbeat boleros........2000-05-09

I am a listener of virtually every type of music. This album is such a refreshing surprise. Unlike so much of the current Latin Pop output, this album is more acoustic and organic sounding, rather than being produced, synthesized or electronic.The songs are traditional arrangements very much in the Bolero and Mariachi style, yet they are extremely fresh sounding. While they are songs of love and longing, they are very upbeat as nearly all of the songs are based in major keys.The only bothersome element is when she attempts to sing the high notes and her voice becomes gruff. Though she probably thinks this is a stylistic affect, it really sounds poor.Overall, however, this is an outstanding album. Very romantic and almost tropical sounding.

Absolutely right, Mr. Puglisi!.......2005-12-17

Everything that Mr. Puglisi had to say below about the shamefully forgotten tenor, Galliano Masini, is perfectly correct. This recording is clearly well on its way out of circulation. Grab it while you can.

Mr. Puglisi only wrote three short reviews but he was dead on target in all three. It is a pity that he did not continue. I am sure the his views would be of great interest.

On the other hand, it appears that the notorious Amazon gremlins have been hard at work with the review of Mr. Larsson of Stockholm. I'm half-ashamed to admit that I have never even heard of the tenor, Berglund, but thanks to Mr. L., I'll certainly keep an open ear from now on.

Superb singing with unique technique.......2002-09-07

Joel Berglund shows what an enormous voice he possesses. Beautiful, flowing singing with power and majesty. Once you discover this kind of singing, you almost want to put your fingers in the ears when you listen to the voices of today. Today singers are taught "modern" technique than not develops the full potential of the voice. Joel Berglund uses the same technique as the great Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad. So buy this record and start listen....

yet another forgotten legend.......2002-08-17

If you haven't had the chance to hear any of the now rarely found recordings of Galliano Masini, then you're missing out on something special. During his golden years--the 1930s and 1940s--Masini achieved levels of fame on par with many others, like Pertile and Gigli, who are now mush better remembered Italian tenors. In fact Mafalda Favero, the great soprano, named Masini as having the most beautiful tenor voice in the world at that time. This recording supports her claim very well. Most notably is the recording of 'O tu che in segno agl'angeli' from La Forza del Destino. It is quite possibly the foremost recording of this aria since that of Caruso, and certainly the greatest of his generation. The aria is taken from a full recording of the opera which also headlines Caniglia, Pasero, and Tagliabue. It too is a wonderful recording which should not be passed up, as Caniglia, who's voice often suffered in recordings, overcame her studio difficulties and shows why she was in such high demand.
