          5 out of 5 stars CUBAN MUSIC WITH DIGNITY!.......2001-01-10

          Marlene Urbay and her collaborators, fronting the Florida Chamber Orchestra, have come up with a real Cuban classic... Each title included in this CD is a piece of Cuban history rescued by Ms. Urbay from the "never never music land" to which it had been condemmed by the current marketing trends led by novelty acts and second rate aging vocalists from the Island, all passing among foreigners as "true Cuban music" I don't think anything similar to Urbay's "Memories of Cuba" have been done in the past 40 years... The only thing that comes close is the magnificent "In A Cuban Garden" recorded by the immortal Gonzalo Roig back in the 1950's. It is a great fortune that with the current recording technologies Urbay & Orchestra can deliver this beautiful music in all its richness and uniqueness. In short this is a masterpiece that should be in everybody's collection, specially those who claim to love and know Cuban music...

              Radoslav Kvapil has recorded two CDs of Smetana for Unicorn-Kanchana. He offers some of the best-played versions of Smetana's music, comparing even with those of the great Rudolf Firkusny (which are unfortunately no longer available). The various sets of dances by Smetana are his best piano music, especially the exquisite Memories of Bohemia. It's a pity that Kvapil has devoted disc space to Smetana's Macbeth and the Witches, an extremely corny tone poem after Shakespeare that is downright embarrassing. But there is so much music on this well-recorded disc that you can skip Macbeth and still get your money's worth. --Leslie Gerber
