For four decades, Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia's jazzy, Mephisto-like technique redefined flamenco. This CD, which means "Good Small Things," is de Lucia's first release in five years, and it's been worth the wait. Most of the eight tracks feature just de Lucia, a chorus of vocalists, percussion, and the zesty handclaps called palmas. Lucia and company take you through the Moorish, Jewish, and Gypsy inventions and dimensions of flamenco, from the buleria "Patio Custodio" and the torrid tientos "El Tesorillo" to the moody, mid-tempo buleria por solea "Antonia." Guitarists Juan D' Anyelica and Tomatito join de Lucia on "El Dengue," and "Que Vengo el Alba," which also features a vocal track from the late singer Camaron de la Isla. The last song, "Casa Bernardo," with bassist Alain Perez, jazz trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez, and Latin pop star Alejandro Sanz on the guitar-like tres, foreshadows the future of this ancient and inventive art form. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars He's finally back.......2005-02-14

Paco de Lucia is the best flamenco guitarist ever. This album is pure flamenco, del bueno, de corazón, flamenco de verdad!!! Great new compositiosn and amazing collaborations throughout the whole recording. If you are just atrting out get this, if you're a long time Paco fan, getthis too!!

3 out of 5 stars too much vocals.......2004-11-01

This refers to my previous review and reveiws of some other fans:
I think everyone knows that flamenco is not only guitar playing! but paco is famous because of his brilliant style of playing flamenco guitar...I think he got what he wanted so hes back to the traditional style now and if he continues like this i would say that its time for him to retire!

one more thing i have to add is that if paco previous albums were all similar styles to this one! he would have never been recognised internationaly! just see above the number of used cd's of this album for sale!!its more than 70!! fans are disapointed!

Old reveiw:
Paco is best when he is playing alone(without singers)..he is a 10 star as a guitar player infact he is the best of them all, but this album is nothing compared to the previous one's, but as a paco fan still u should have it.the thing i didnt like was the singers! the good thing was the rumba..the music quality is very good...come on paco give us the old styles..

5 out of 5 stars Great Flamenco .......2004-10-01

5 stars for this album, not for regular "guitar flashing-fast riffs" addicts; more for those looking for depth on arrangement and composition, those searching for the nuevo Flamenco.
In response to "ggprep" comments, a line from Paco's Zyryab: " Si tu no tiene soniquete pa que te mete".

5 out of 5 stars Twilight, Beckoning With Playful Allure.......2004-08-26

There are moments of sheer Music which have the ability
to bring a smile to your heart, and thankful tears to
many an eye. Paco de Lucia, in the time in which he has
graced the world with the wizardry of his art, has
been responsible for many such moments.
"Aires de Linares", "Percussion Flamenca", "Almoraima",
"Montesario de Sal", his stirring sextet take on "El Vito",
his deadly arrangements of Manuel de Falla, his
breathtaking embrace of CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ are
but a few of the precious moments by which de Lucia
has inspired the audiences of the world for over
30 years.

Truth to tell, after the captivating triumph of de Lucia's recording
from a few years ago, the incomparable LUZIA, many
wondered if, even for this master of the Flamenco guitar,
there were any more summits left.

COSITAS BUENAS answers that question with a
resounding affirmation of the man, his artistry,
and the Music which empowers all. If LUZIA was
the sunrise sweeping the waiting horizon, COSITAS
BUENAS is the becknoing twilight full of
playful allure, and spirits of renewal.

A masterpiece of both traditional sound and
transitional vision, de Lucia unleashes a beautiful
flurry of cabaret sorcery worthy of the immortal
Sabicas himself. Voices and instrumentalists join
for devout song meant only for the most intimate
celebration, and dedicated participation.

The air is charged with the weavings of Bulerias, Tientos,
Tango and Rumba, with a touch of Solea for special measure.
We are blessed by de Lucia's earthy song and gossamer chant,
its rolling dance and uplifting romance as sobering in scope
and focus as it is exhilirating to experience, and to share.

COSITAS BUENAS. Paco de Lucia and friends, after hours,
brewing good little things which potently deliver The
Big Picture.

Only one thing is needed to fulfill this summoning.
You. Enter cleanly, and know your own will.

Come.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite musicianship.......2004-07-28

How in your right mind can you not enjoy a Paco De Lucia album? I mean: the guy is a genius and he's helped shape Flamenco for the past 40+ years. This is his first album in a while, and one that pays tribute to the genre that he's so well known for, by sticking to the basics: his guitar, hand clapping and six different vocalists sporting heart tearing voices interpreting his bulerias, rumbas and tientos. My favorite tracks are "Patio Custodio", Antonia" and "Que Venga El Alba". By all means, get yourself a copy and chill out to the best Spanish guitar in the world.

Yoakam's third album finds him more daring in his incorporation of Creedence-style rock guitar fills--Pete Anderson, take a bow--and Tex-Mex polka into his Bakersfield stomp. Class resentment and murderous jealousy color this disc much more than its predecessors; "I Sang Dixie" is one of the all-time great I'm-just-a-country-boy-in-this-mean-ol'-city songs. And while Yoakam's version of "Home of the Blues" doesn't muster the drama of Johnny Cash's original, he'll forever deserve props for resurrecting the Buck Owens obscurity "Streets of Bakersfield"--not to mention duet partner Owens's then-dormant career. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Have you ever walked the streets of Bakersfield?.......2006-10-27

This was Dwight Yoakam's third major label album. It features seven original songs and four covers of older songs. The album features Dwight's first #1 hit, a cover of Buck Owens' "Streets of Bakersfield", featuring Buck himself, which helped to revive Buck's career. It also features Dwight's second #1 hit, "I Sang Dixie". "I Got You" was a Top Five hit and "Beunas Noches From a Lonely Room" just barely missed being a hit. Overall a very good album, which Dwight's fans will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Darker Dwight.......2005-12-28

This is one of Dwight's darker albums, and also one of his best albums. While he still maintains that Bakersfield integrity, you'll hear much more "south-of-the-border" influence here. This album also introduces us to the Buck Owens duet that gave Dwight his first #1 hit, "Streets of Bakersfield". While most of these numbers harken back to the glory days of Buck, Merle, and Wynn Stewart, there's also a few fine Kentucky/Appalachian flavored tunes that, thankfully, would also be included in most (if not all) of his future albums: these include "Floyd County" and a beautiful gospel number "Hold on to God". No other artist has maintained his roots and artistic integrity as Dwight has, and country music owes this man a big THANKS.

5 out of 5 stars Dwight is a legend!! .......2005-12-24

A far departure from today's country, Dwight Yoakam never lets his fans down. He remains true to old country/rockabilly, the sound and musicians who inspired him, like the duet with Buck Owens in "Bakersfield" or the classic Hank Locklin "Send Me The Pillow".

This CD radiates that sound of lonliness, whether it's livin' lovin' and leavin' songs or just plain down and out and broke like "I Got You". Dwight's voice is so original, never can anyone sound like him. The music is toe-tappin that always features great guitar sounds! And, the "I Hear You Knockin'" is a a different song than the popular one known by Dave Edmunds; this is excellent too.

Every song here is a gem; it's that Dwight Yoakam sound!

With the rash of maufactured country singers today...please INTRODUCE SOMEONE to Dwight Yoakam .....MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars YOAKAM.......2005-09-05

GREAT SONGS THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE BUT NO LONGER PLAYED OVER THE RADIO STATIONS. I NEVER GET TIRED OF IT AND KEEP IT AS A NEARLY PERMANENT FIXTURE IN MY VEHICLE'S CD PLAYER.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but the great era was just around the corner........2004-01-27

This isn't a bad album and it has some high quality offerings but it could hardly be considered one of DY's best (IMO). There's a handful of tunes that rank among his best, including "I Sang Dixie", "Floyd County", the title song, and "One More Name", which is my personal favorite in the bunch.
"I Got You", "Send Me the Pillow" and "Streets of Bakersfield" with Buck Owens (always a treat) are also pretty good. However, "Home of the Blues" and "I Hear You Knockin'" are both utterly forgettable and I sometimes wonder if they shouldn't have been left on the cutting room floor, as it were.

After his red hot debut Guitars, Cadillacs, etc. etc. and the not quite as good Hillbilly Deluxe, Dwight made this his third album which, unfortunately, isn't even as good as the latter. Much of that has to do with the fact that I think DY was in transition at this time, as he was going from country performer to artist. His next album If There Was a Way would be the beginning of his greatest period (which, coincidentally is still going on). That makes it easy to forgive him for making just an okay album sixteen years ago instead of a great album which he has now gotten quite used to doing.

I liked this cd but not as much as other Sol de Mexico cds. I have Mexico canta con Sol de Mexico and I prefer that one more than this one, even though some of the songs on this one are nice, like Corazon Buenas Neches, Que Padre Es La Vida, Penas de Amor, Es Muy Tu Vida and Mala Mujer. I liked El Rehilete, but that song sounds a like like a mix of Cuerdas de Satin and Tropeterias.

        5 out of 5 stars Raymundo Rojas.......2005-03-25

Looks like all the bad reviews for Sol de Mexico are from the same person. But you'll see that Mr. Hernandez' beautiful music won't decrease in quality, and neither its value. You will be able to enjoy this music for years to come, and if for some reason you ever stop enjoying it, you will be able to sell these jewels at top price, get your money back, and maybe even make a profit, since Sol De Mexico will only acquire more fans, as time goes by. Guaranteed!

Great Record! Just like all the others from SOL.

2 out of 5 stars Better than the one that came after.......2003-09-14

The most annoying of the the "show" mariachis I was surprised I liked some songs on this album. "Corazon, Buenas Noches" is a nice peice as is "Que Padre es la vida," which Luis Aguilar would sing. I really liked the Popurri del Amor and it's one of my favorite on the album. "Nunca Jamas," Lalo Guerrero's hit and Juan Gabriel's "Constumbres" go really well. Kudos to Hernandez arrangement on this one. I like the "trio" aura they give to the song. The muted trumpets and arrangments on "Gema" are done well; they should have had someone else sing it though. The other two popurris "Penas de Amor" and "Popurri de Las Ferias" are cheese factories. It's alway nice to hear Timoteo "Tello" Gonzalez (the guitarest) voice though. There are some gems on this recording.

        5 out of 5 stars Passion 4 Mariachi.......2002-06-05

After being raised hearing Sol De Mexico's music, I have developed a great passion for mariachi. I own their 8 CD's, but my favorite is "Corazon Buenas Noches". These guys share the same musical passion and strive to project their love for mariachi in their songs. I really recomend it! 'Que Viva El Mariachi!!!

it seems that the more i see these guys perform the more i want to hear them play.they are an awsome mariachi who put all their heart soul and mind to our music
