Sharp stuff from a talented old-timer.......2002-08-20

In the early 1960s, Generoso Jimenez was the bandleader and trumpet player for the legendary Cuban vocalist, Beny More. Decades later, Jimenez is still holding his own and banging out some tasty Cuban dance music, even at this late date. Ths is a very good record, although if I had to complain about anything on here, it would be the repetitive "Cherry Pink" -styled brass sting, which crops up all over this album, and seems a bit overused. Otherwise, this is pretty solid stuff!

I have 4 of their albums, including "The Garden of Earthly Delights". I found this album to be more "mystically enchanting" than their other works. Typically, the album is presented as a themed play sung or played in about 17 acted scenes or "tracks". THE GARDEN* however, is more instrumental than say "Music for Joan the Mad", and, definately more mystical than "Le Monsignor".

I HIGHLY recommend you collect ALL OF LA NEF'S WORKS. This album is unique and isn't comparative to any of La Nef's other work. It stands out soley from all the rest and your collection wouldn't be complete without it. Although I prefer "Joan the Mad" and "The Quest for the Holy Grail" over this album (soley because I love the storylines), I'm very satisfied with my collection and happy I bought it.

My testimony of this troupe is -- BUY EVERYTHING THEY PRODUCE...THEY'RE THAT GOOD! Each album is a book. Each scene or "track" is creative, entertaining and thoroughly nourishing to the soul. If you haven't gone Mideval....JUST LISTEN TO THIS.

This album offers an eclectic display of medieval music. We get pieces from the Cathar, French, Spanish, Andalusian &Sephardic traditions - yet the tunes blend easily - just like the bizarre beings in the famous triptych by H. Bosch melt into a fascinating whole. The Bosch painting is intensely personal, as each viewer picks out the details, patterns and configurations that speak to her.... and the same is true with this collection of 14th & 15th century music presented by La Nef, the sextet founded in 1991 by Sylvain Bergeron. the pieces are all played with medieval instruments (including lute, oud, the vielle, psaltery and santur); La Nef adapted a few pieces to address modern sensibilities, yet the adaptations ring true to me; perhaps this is what the Cathars really wanted?! I have listened to this CD many times and will listen to it again. And again. Recommended.

Bienvenidos al Circo (Welcome to the Circus).......2005-01-03

Forget everything you know about Latin Rock...forget about Santana influences, ska, reggae, or anything you think latin rock is...because Circo will blow your mind. Think of a music mix between Talking Heads and Simple Minds, and a singer which is (Queen's) Freddie Mercury, (The Cure's) Robert Smith and Celia Cruz all role into one, and you end up with an eclectic cocktail call Circo. This is a new version of the album, that includes a bonus live cd, and let me tell you, if the music is good, the shows are an spiritual ejaculation experience, very hard to forget. I was in the show, and I was nothing less than wet. I recommend this album to anyone with an open mind, capable enough to enjoy erotic spiritualism and creative musicianship. Let's just hope that their second album "En el cielo de tu boca (In the sky of your mouth)", to be release on February 15, is just as good. Enjoy and...Que vivan los reyes, y la madre que los pario (Long live the kings and the mothers that gave birth to them)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Circo es Increible - Mixture of Latin Beats and modern rock.......2002-03-25

I Love this album. I'm always looking for great new latin rock and this CD is a keeper. I purchased the album uninformed, but optimistic; any band who names their CD "Not All Pop Music is Good" must be more than your average pop band - and they are so much more! The songs on this album are contagious with the cool latin grooves, some spine tingling electronic loops and relentless vocals. The first release off this album is track # 6 "Historia de un Amor" and it rocks. Track # 8, "Estrella de los 100 Mares" is also a very catchy tune that will make you want to sing loud with the windows down in your car. #2 "Odiame" starts off as a very sensual song, with nice vocals, then changes for the chorus with strong latin salsa like vocals, back to the sensual vocals, and towards the end, the singer just lets it all out. All the other songs are very good too. I recommend you buy this album. It's nice to see that Amazon finally started carrying it.

Gloriously Romantic Mariachi.......2003-06-06

This album is one of Pepe's best!
His voice is beautiful; the sound engineering is superb and the mariachi instrumentation is perfectly balanced...
I wore out a copy of this CD and am presently listening to my second as I type this.
Pepe Aguilar is one the finest mariachi singers in Mexico today!
If you like mariachi music interpreted beautifully and romantically, you will enjoy this album.
If you want to hear Pepe's MASTERPIECE so far, buy this CD AND the " Por Mujeres Como Tu" CD. This CD is just a prelude to one of the BEST mariachi CDs ever produced by anybody. Period. Starting with the musical arrangements, the opulent orchestrations, meticulious sound quality and engineers who polished this into a wonderfully expressive work of art.
Whatever Pepe sings, he sings with all the passion, heart and soul that he can bring to the song anticipated perfectly by the mariachis who accompany him and make BOTH CDs a truly soulstirring experience.
You WILL LOVE these CDs!
In fact, it's going to be difficult for him to top these so it will be interesting to follow his career and see if he can do it.
