5 out of 5 stars The music of Jobim forever supplies us with the soundtrack to our passions..........2007-06-09

Antonio Carlos Jobim weaved a magic spell with his music the way few songwriters ever can; and he sang wonderfully as well. He truly invented Bossa Nova music in the late 1950s with João Gilberto; and for this he deserves to be in the history books forever for his fine contributions to the world of music.

The CD starts off with the smash hit "The Girl From Ipanema." Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto's wife, sings the part of the vocals that are English. Although some may say that Astrud "sang flat;" her voice imparted a sense of natural sensuality and honesty that few professional singers ever achieve. The Portuguese lyrics are also beautiful even if you don't understand precisely what they mean--this song is THAT good.

Another major early hit for Jobim follows; the song entitled "Desafinado (Off Key)" shines like gold. Jobim plays piano on "Desafinado (Off Key)" while both Astrud and João Gilberto sing to perfection. Stan Getz does a great saxophone solo on this classic track, too. In addition, "Só Danço Samba" continues the romantic, enchanting early '60s Bossa Nova flavor; Jobim is on guitar and again Stan Getz accompanies the rest of the crew with a flawless saxophone performance.

"Insensatez (How Insensitive)" features Astrud Gilberto once more as she sings the lyrics to this melancholy ballad. The Marty Paich Orchestra performs a very well done musical arrangement; and Jobim also plays guitar for this number.

"Amor Em Paz (Once I Loved);" Água De Beber" and "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)" provide us with three magical instrumental numbers. The sophistication of the musical arrangements showcase the genius of Jobim's music and artistry; and the Brazilian beat enchants you with its captivating beauty. I love those strings and the piano on "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)!" SMILE

"Wave" and "Tide" boast smooth as silk arrangements by Claus Ogerman and Eumir Deodato, respectively.

The CD track set ends fittingly with Jobim's "Passarim," a number from the late 1980s. The vocals on "Passarim" reflect great forethought and good judgment. In addition, the track set proceeds in chronological order; this illustrates the development of Jobim's artistry very well.

The liner notes include an essay about Jobim and his career by Steven Ivory; and you get the song credits and the years in which they were recorded. The artwork exceeds my expectations with good use of color and a great black and white picture of Jobim on the front cover.

I highly recommend this CD for Jobim fans and fans of Bossa Nova music everywhere. If you want to get acquainted with Jobim's work but you can only choose a single CD to buy you can't go wrong with this one.

Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-12

This CD took me right back to my days in the early 60s of babysitting for young couples and listening to all of their albums. If you like bossa nova, you couldn't ask for more than this CD. Jobim is the master.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An incredible CD set from a torchy diva, a country thrush, a pop songbird, a Broadway belter--make it Vikki Carr tonight !!!.......2007-05-28

Vikki Carr sincerely, passionately and confidently performs just about anything on this generous three CD set. You truly owe it to yourself to get this three CD set and experience the wonder of Vikki Carr for yourself. This CD set, my friends, is one to be treasured.

The three CD set gives us so much that I scarcely know where to begin to describe it all to you. You get songs recorded by Vikki in her youth ("San Francisco;" "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Somewhere In The Night"); and there are songs recorded in her native tongue of Spanish including "Cuando Calienta El Sol;" "Que Sea El" and "Más Que Nada." Vikki even sings beautifully in Italian; she performs "Il Colore Dell Amore (Color Of Love);" "Magari (Forget You)" and "Si E Lui (It Must Be Him)" as only a highly seasoned professional ever could. There are even live tracks on this three CD set that show us the electricity in the air during a Vikki Carr concert; you get "Can't Take My Eyes Off You;" "Some Of These Days/After You've Gone" and "Carnival (Manha De Carnival)," just to name a few. Indeed, each CD boasts an impressive 26 tracks for a total of 78 numbers on three CDs; and the quality control remains very high throughout because Vikki NEVER disappoints.

Vikki can take any song and infuse it with a fresh type of electric energy that I simply haven't heard before. The first CD offers the beautiful "It Must Be Him" about an unrequited love. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is one of many numbers on this set that get a complete makeover by Vikki with the singular beauty of her voice and a more modern musical arrangement that reflects both creativity and good judgment. "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" gets the royal treatment from Vikki; she delivers this with great panache. "Is She In Love" stuns you with its beauty as Vikki wonders about the loyalty of her man. Awesome! In addition, Vikki's classic "With Pen In Hand" makes me cry--and I never cry; but this ballad is THAT touching.

"Más Que Nada" sports an awesome Latin beat that is infectiously catchy and you will enjoy this song easily without ever knowing a single word of Spanish. "Cuando Calienta El Sol" shimmers as the masterpiece of all ballads in Vikki's care; she performs "Cuando Calienta El Sol" with remarkable sensitivity that touches me greatly. The musical arrangement for "Cuando Calienta El Sol" perfectly complements the beauty of Vikki's voice, too. "Que Sea El" has a "light rock" feel to it mixed with a love ballad flavor so that Vikki can deliver this song from such a new angle that she instantly makes this ballad her own--as she does so frequently on the three CDs in this set.

"Forget You" begins with Vikki singing with just a guitar in the background; when the musical arrangement begins the chorus and the music enhance the beauty of this number. Vikki's voice is rich, warm and vibrant both on this track--indeed, her voice is in excellent form throughout this three CD set.

Vikki also sings the standards. You get splendid renditions of "Bye Bye Blackbird;" and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)." Her medley of "Some Of These Days/After You've Gone" shines like gold as Vikki delivers this before a live audience. Vikki's rapport with her audience is excellent and the crowd hangs on her every word! Great!

Vikki possesses the rare talent to even add Italian songs to her repertoire; "Il Colore Dell Amore" features Vikki singing with a degree of sensitivity that I rarely hear; and "Se E Lui (It Must Be Him)" glistens more brightly than gold.

The liner notes include the songs credits; Vito Cifaldi III and Randy Cordova also contribute an informative essay about Vikki and her career. The photos of Vikki are terrific and Vikki personally includes a brief "hello" note, too.

If you've never experienced the singular beauty of Vikki Carr's vocal talents it may appear as if I am being effusive or flowery in this review. Fortunately for everyone, I am not exaggerating. Vikki's Grammy Awards and her countless gold and platinum records prove her talent more than my review ever could.

Once in a very, very long while, all the stars in all of the heavens align just so; and a rare jewel like Vikki Carr is born. We are infinitely better off for Vikki sharing her talent with us; and it will be a very long time before we see another quite like her. When the CDs end you want more just as Vikki's audiences always want more. I highly recommend this three CD set not just for Vikki's fans but for anyone who appreciates words and music as a form of fine art. Hopefully Vikki will be performing as only she can for decades to come.

    Bravo, Vikki Carr!!!

    5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY RATES 50 STARS & MORE!.......2007-02-03

I've been a Vikki Carr fan for a long time, but did not collect a lot of her music until recent years. A friend played some her English CDs for me, and since rediscovering "It Must Be Him" when seeing the film MOONSTRUCK, I was totally hooked. Slowly, I've built my collection of her wonderful English and Spanish CDs (mostly Sony releases), but hit that snag with many out of print.

This gorgeous new import is phenominal! Beautifully restored hits and album tracks, plus a treasure trove of unreleased and Liberty-years foreign language recordings. A standout for me is "Tell Her Of Our Love" on Disc 1. I was also never a big fan of the song "Until It's Time For You To Go" when heard by other artists. Vikki absolutely nails it and I adore the song now, voting her version the definitive interpretation. It is also nice to hear "He's A Rebel" in Spanish (El Rebelde) on Disc 2.

For any Vikki Carr fan, this is a MUST HAVE. Those who want more than just a Greatest Hits, especially of the Liberty Years, look no further!

    5 out of 5 stars A fine 3CD.......2006-12-05

Of all the great popular singers of yesteryear, none had (and still has!) a finer voice or more exciting and effervescent style than Vikki Carr. Her classic 11 Liberty ('63-'70) and 6 Columbia ('71-'74) albums have seen a number of recent compilations and revivals on CD. But none better than this attractive 3CD package selected from the Liberty era, which also contains rare singles and foreign language versions, not to mention superb liner notes and photos. A perfect introduction to a wonderful singer.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate is the Perfect word for this Collection!.......2006-12-03

EMI has truly outdone themselves this time! This box set contains three CD's and each CD has 26 songs - that's a total of 78 songs! There are songs in english, spanish and italian! Each song is a winner, no matter what the language. My personal favorite is "Is She In Love". I truly believe if this song would've been released when it was recorded, it would've been a bigger hit than "It Must Be Him" (which is included three times - in english, spanish (Que Sea El) and italian (Si E Lui).
The liner notes are the best ever written and there is even a special message written by Vikki herself! My thanks to everyone involved in this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars the divine vikki carr!.......2006-11-14

if you are vikki carr fan, this collection is a special treat. i have been obsessively listening these songs and i am just amazed at miss carr's vocal talents. her songs choices, diction and phrasing simply luminates. favorites songs: cross your heart, better than anything, real live boy, granada, i will wait for love, nowhere man, no other love and look at that face. all the songs are wonderful but these are my favorites. i hope that emi will re-release more albums from her 60's days.

Looking at the others reviews I sincerely think you were too much generous or you don't know the music of Tito. I bought this CD and I was desapointed for the lack of energy authenticity by the quality of the arrangements.
This is not a bad CD but the oldies are FAR BETTER.

4 out of 5 stars Fun dance collection.......2006-02-25

This collection is a lot of fun percussion with typical Latin mambo beats. It's got enough variety to keep you interested but it's still pretty easy listening. A fun addition to anyone's dance collection.

5 out of 5 stars El Rey Del Timbales.......2005-08-24

The name fitted him perfectly. No one has ever and will ever record music the way he did. His style was one of a kind. Many may copy him, but they will never match him. This album is truly wonderful. Latin jazz is wrapped up with him. He makes you want to just get up and dance!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Tito Puente CDs available.......2001-05-17

This is easily one of the best Tito Puente CDs availabe. A compilation of some of Tito's best songs, these versions inspire awe and intense dancing. In addition, the notes by Joe Conzo succinctly detail Puente's life from the beginning of his musical career (or at least by the time Tito was 13 ... ), Tito's influences, playing with Machito, to the Navy in WWII, to the Palladium era and beyond.

Even just the mention of the infamous and influential Palladium establishes the authenticity of the biography, the music and the album. Within the New York Mambo scene, abundant reference is still made to the Palladium, both to the music and the dancing (which cannot exist without each other). Conzo notes that "Ran Kan Kan" was first recorded in 1949 -- a fact that many of the people 'in the know' today are not familiar with.

This CD is so good that for a while, it was the first thing I wanted to hear in the morning and the last music I wanted to hear at night. Don't miss this one!

Thanks go first and foremost to the creators and second to those who chronicle the music, the musicians and the culture. The growth in this art achieved by the next generation will only be possible because they learned from you.

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

      5 out of 5 stars Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

5 out of 5 stars LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but an accordion is not a bandoneón........2006-07-01

As an argentine tango lover I was amazed at the "authentic", old time, popular feeling of these tango recordings, made in U.S.A., not in Argentina. The players are outstanding, specially those of piano and violin. The accordion sound is truly remarkable but lacking the - for an argentine listener - indispensable sound of a bandoneón, the classic tango instrument introduced a century ago in the port city of Buenos Aires by german sailors.
Nevertheless "THE TANGO PROJECT" occupies a proud place in my,almost entirely of argentine origin, collection of tango records.

      5 out of 5 stars good album.......2003-06-06

this is a good cd to listen to for any tango enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars Classic tangos, nice arrangments, but..........2003-01-18

Classic tangos, arranged and played by excellent, classically trained musicians, but the end result tends to sound like classically trained musician playing from charts. The accordion lacks the pressing edginess of the bandoneon. Still, a very pleasant listen.

      5 out of 5 stars Really Great.......2002-10-28

The dance company that I belong to...called State Street Dance Company...used this CD for part of one of their programs! This CD had some really great pieces, and even though the show was in 1999, i still watch it sometimes just to hear the music! I may just be a teenager, but this music really says something to me and always makes me want to dance!!

5 out of 5 stars Music from the movie "Scent of a Woman".......2001-11-09

This CD will be enjoyed even by folks who do not normally listen to this genre of music. It contains the actual version of the tune "Por Una Cabeza" to which the movie character LtCol Slade (Al Pacino) danced the tango with the lovely young woman in the movie "Scent of a Woman". Rent or buy the movie and check it out in the movie credits. This version has also been used by ice dancers during international skating competitions. Anyway, beyond that it is an outstanding collection, very enjoyable. The trio of musicians are outstanding virtuosos, and their skill and blend are impeccable. No wonder it was chosen for the film soundtrack. Another gem track is "Adios Muchachos" which I am sure a lot of people will recognize. If you have seen the movie or think you may like Tango music, this is the first CD to buy.

I would recommend this CD. A friend of mine had this Cd, I liked it so much I had to get my own copy. I have also had a lot of other friends ask about this CD.

I'm not a deticated fan of tis music as others may be but if you are oing to start anywhere, this is one you want. To me, all the songs are gtreat to listen to. The songs will take you to another world.

      5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure.......2006-06-26

This CD is fantastic for anyone who loves Flaminco and the Flaminco guitar. It surges with energy and might just have you "dancing in the streets" or rushing out to sign up for lessons. Enjoy it; you won't be disappointed. P.S. I have heard and seen live Flaminco in Seville, more than once, and this one really took me back with even greater awe and admiration, in addition to the otherwise wonderful memories.

5 out of 5 stars great new flamenco.......2006-03-26

OK let me just settle all this criticism for all those who may want to buy this cd. First of all I play flamenco guitar professionally. There are 50 different styles of flamenco that are well know and countless others that arene't so well known.
Within those styles are hundreds of compas most based on the city in Spain of origin. There are a myriad of time signatures including the 12 meter hemiolic which most common in Bulerias.
I have reviewed this and other CD's like Flamenco chill and comment without reserve that these are flamenco songs. The "modernization" of flamenco music can be equated to blues appearing in every rock recording for the last 50 years. An old type flamenco recording would usually be a concert piece from Tarraga or Jerez or one those classically trained flamenco artists. It could well be argued that they classicized flamenco which ripped out all the guts and soul of the music. The amazing picado runs, powerful rageos, and alzapua licks are all mandatory elements of flamenco. If one would participate in a juelgo they would see a cajon, castenettes, palmas, cante, baille etc...this is a letre..a play of sorts with everyone responding to the cante. To listen to this in a recording would be like listening to the sound of a baseball game..there would be so much missing that it would be a complete waste of time.
SO stop tying to be mr. know it all and just enjoy music for what it is..an expression of human emotion....peace out

      5 out of 5 stars Sizzling Guitar.......2006-02-25

i'm an amature but trust me this fusion of guitars is one of the BEST your ears could ever..rythym,skill,harmony all in one.

5 out of 5 stars "New Flamenco" not new Flamenco.......2005-12-07

With apologies to Mr. L.K. Coleman and his utterly misleading Spotlight Review, this album does not pretend to be anything but what it is. Flamenco is a traditional form of music born in Andalusian Spain and created from Indian, Arabic, Jewish, Romano-Iberian and Celto-Iberian elements. GYPSY PASSION and its successors in the Narada catalogue are examples of Nuevo Flamenco or "New Flamenco" which is a style of Fusion incorporating traditional Flamenco, Jazz, Rock, Classical, and other musics. Either Mr. Coleman doesn't know about New Flamenco as a school of performance, or he's a purist who just dislikes it.

In either case, this album deserves five stars as a lively, engaging and pleasurable listening experience. And yes, "New Flamenco" has revitalized the traditional Andalusian form in modern-day Spain. GYPSY PASSION is absolutely worth your time.
