Customer Reviews:
Very artistic, great ballads on this CD........2007-05-24
This is a very good CD. Deborah Gibson's voice is just magnificent on many of these ballads, and I love the piano on some of the tracks. I don't have a strong musical background, but I believe that Ms. Gibson's voice is a lot better here than on most of her other CDs, especially the first few ones she made when she was younger. The lyrics are also very good. The only reason why I gave this CD 4 stars instead of 5 is because there was not enough upbeat songs on it, which is a bit of a let down if you compare it to CDs like "Electric Youth" and "Anything is Possible". There are two dance mix (the one of "Only In My Dreams" in especially great), but for the most part, this album consists mostly of ballads. If you don't like ballads, do not buy this album, but if you do, I would strongly recommend it. It is very relaxing and well done.
Debbie does it again.......2007-01-12
Great cd, If you love her earlier music you will love this one. Very enjoyable, highly recommend.
Great voice, not as good as earlier albums........2006-03-17
I love Deborah Gibson's voice on this album, but the songs are not as good as her earlier work.
@}->--- Still a favourite @}->---.......2006-01-23
Debbie (she'll still always be Debbie to me) is really very talented. Many people may not know that she has almost always written her own music. She writes great songs (excells in the ballad department) and she sings them beautifully. Granted, she doesn't have a majorly strong voice, but it's unique and refreshing. She has some good songs on here. Butterflies Are Free, Cry Tonight and Moonchild are some standout songs. There is also newer version of two older songs. The new version of Only in My Dreams is quite good. I do believe she has been short changed in the popularity department, but true fans know how good this is, and if you don't believe us, go and buy this for yourself and form your own opinion. I know you will love it too.
PERFECTION.......2005-09-13
for whatever reason, deborah is kept a bit on a back burner in america. i don't know how to explain it, and i don't have any advice to her to stop it.... but the whole thing just doesn't add up.
she's an incredible artist. she is a brilliant song writer. - honestly, an intelligent, beautiful, so many times; close to perfect song writer... and one hot woman!
that said... let's review "Deborah" or "Moonchild." you pick. you can call the album either.
"ODE TO A WOULD BE LOVER"
the song is a show-case of her flawless song writing. her voice possibly can't handle the chorus, if i had to give it some sort of criticism, that would be it. but the song is so damn good that it's easily forgiven.
"MOONCHILD"
hmm... this song reminds me of "Naked." her newest release. i don't even know why, but i put the two songs together. her voice is steller here. it's a rebelious, slightly strange, earthy tune. it's hot.
"ONLY WORDS"
this song is complete perfection. the lyrics to the vocals to the music. i hope that she's proud of her abilities. she should be. she deserves much more respect than she gets, but i digress... i love it.
"NATURALLY"
i would have said this song was filler, but apparently it was a single? you can see her song writing talent here. i wonder if she shouldn't just write that musical she keeps teasing us all with? she clearly could do it.
"NOBODY'S YOU"
if i have one complaint about deborah, it is that i think she doesn't always use her voice the way she should. this song is great, but then you get to the bridge, where the music soars perfectly and her voice comes in strong and assured. i've rarely heard her voice like this, and she slams it. excellent song. the emotion is apparent and moving.
"CRY TONIGHT"
(duet with anna-jane casey)
the ladies sound beautiful. the song will tear you up. beware
"WHERE I WANNA BE"
don't even kid. here she hits damn near close to perfection, again! it leaves you questioning the music industry in every way shape and forum. silly fools.
"BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE"
what an incredible talent. she is a song writer. and she is a wonderful one.
"GIVE ME YOUR LOVE"
"you should move because you're wanting to, not because i fly. can you only view your dreams when you're up there in the sky?!"
again, the woman hits it. over and over she hits it. this song leaves you jammin. you get caught up, and just can't stop. can't get enough! - and that's what it's supposed to do. slammin
"JUST WASN'T LOVE"
i'd rate her up with dianne warren on just having the ear for a perfect pop song. i'm assuming this is more filler for her - and her filler is even good =)
"I CAN'T"
a super different sound for it. it's sensual and hot. her voice wraps around this one like a blanket to keep it safe and strong. this one would've fit perfectly on "MYOB."
"I WILL LET YOU GO"
a beautiful mature sad song. full of positivity and strength. it's who she is, and it reflects.
"ONLY WORDS (DANCE EDIT)"
the song was pure perfection in it's original state. it was fun to begin with, and here, it's just good times. here it stand, regardless of the recording industry, proud and perfect, yet again.
"ONLY IN MY DREAMS '97"
i guess this was for the fans? um, thanks, but... why?
come out with a remix cd. "deborah" or "moonchild" or whatever, doesn't really require this to be here.
"DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE" & "PEOPLE"
added benifits. people is great, but it's "Don't Rain On My Parade" that makes even me question why i question her vocal ability. the woman has got it. she does it great. you can't deny it. you really really can't. ONE GUN SHOT AND BAM!!
to sum up; i don't need record industry validation. i'm with deborah till the end. when you're good, you're good. i'm not going anywhere!

It was Yomo Toro who brought the cuatro (a four string guitar) into the international arena the funky jibaro (whom Robert Palmer, writing in The New York Times, called the Puerto Rican Jimi Hendrix ) was a long time member of the Fania All Stars. When Roswell first heard Yomo he swooned, and they finally met in 2002 when Roswell sat in with Yomo at a concert in Haverstraw, NY. It was love at first sound and their collaboration had seeded. Following MaliCool and Blue Mongol, Roswell Rudd now collaborates with musicians of the Latin culture, and the fusion with his jazz idiom is perfect.

El Espirito.......2006-04-08
I'm a Gringo. I don't even speak Spanish. I have a bunch of German friends that made me listen to these guys when I was visiting in 1993. I have to admit, I was hooked by the Heroes.
Any fan of real rock music--you know, with driving guitars; a throbbing, heartfelt vocalist; and that beat that makes you shake your ass--will completely appreciate this album.
People may label it Spanish Rock. I'm here to tell you it transcends nationality and language. It is Rock N Roll and you shouldn't miss out on the experience. Get it.
Viva Los Heroes del Silencio!
Great Album and Great Combination of Multiple Rock Styles.......2005-11-07
I think this album is the soul of HS where they combined multiple musical styles and confirmed they are one of the most important bands in the history of Rock in Spanish.
POWERFUL SPANISH ROCK FROM THE GREATEST HEROES.......2005-04-05
I am a big Heroes del SIlencio Fan, I have all their albums and each one of them have their own unique sound, they're all great! But this one, El Espiritu Del Vino, is the most powerful and rocking album of the band, each song is a masterpiece, the lyrics are poetry full of wrath, love, dispair, obssesion, sensuality, beautiness, passion...they simple blow your mind.
Bendecida (oh my god!!!!!! my favorite!!), El camino del exceso and La apariencia no es sincera are my favorites ones, I just can't explain you the energy they gives to me each time I sing them! Enrique Bunbury's voice simply gets you high and Juan Valdivia's guitar work is just amazing, also Pedro Andreu (drums) and Joaquin Cardiel (bass).
I can say this album is a great contribution to the spanish rock, maybe more than other albums from other bands, leaving without doubt tha Heroes Del Silencio really rocks hard in this one.
You have to buy this CD to know what I'm talking about, the finest spanish rock!! are you ready to blow your mind??
QUE VIVA SIEMPRE HEROES!!
you should buy this even if you don't speak spanish!.......2004-09-28
sometimes I even fell sorry for the people who don't speak
spanish because they are really missing this band.
I discovered this band like 10 years ago back in my country
because I cousin told me about them and believe me I haven't
heard anything better since then (in spanish rock).
the singer is just amazing, the guitar player WOW!! he's my
third favorite guitar player ever, he is awesome and belive me
because I play guitar too.
This band a great melody in thir music so if you like melodic stuff believe me this is great, really amazing solos on guitar.
there is also a copilation out with their best material and it's good if you wan't to know the band but you know what?
they only have 4 albums and 1 of unrelease material called
RAREZEAS which is great also, so my point is: all their albums
are f**king amazing so I don't think you'll need that copilation.
so again I highly recomment this band you can't start with any album, I'll write them down for you:
EL MAR NO CESA
EL ESPIRITU DEL VINO
SENDEROS DE TRAICION
AVALANCHA
RAREZAS(UNREALEASE MATERIAL)
SO THERE YOU GO!!
Magistral.......2004-07-09

Paper Sleeve Version of the Argentinean Prog-rock Band's Album Originally Released in 1973.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent prog from Argentina.......2006-06-18
It is simply astounding how far-reaching the influence of the progressive rock "thing" spread, as evidenced by this incredible 1975 recording from Argentina. Musically, this album sounds a great deal like Italian progressive rock (PFM specifically), along with the Spanish band Crack, although there is occasionally a harder edge to the songs - especially in the electric guitar work.
The musicians on this album include Carlos Goler (drums); Claudio Martinez (Rickenbacker bass); Osvaldo Favrot (electric/acoustic guitar; backing vocals); Fernando Berge (lead vocals); and Gustavo Fedel (acoustic piano, Hammond organ, piano, mini-moog; and string synthesizer). All of the band members are excellent and there is some fairly complex ensemble work with a ton of synthesizers and trebly Rickenbacker bass. The vocals are also quite nice, with lyrics in Spanish. Dynamic contrasts are well-developed, as are melodies and harmonies - these guys really knew how to put a piece together. Instrumental riffs are also used pretty effectively as are "psychedelic" touches. The eight tracks range in length from approximately 2 - 8 minutes and more or less flow together into one larger work.
Although the cover art has not been posted here it is certainly worth describing and is very cool. The cover features this part butterfly/part female human standing on an elevated throne. Human skulls are scattered about and there is a large insect, with some rather pronounced compound eyes perched above the standing figure. Overall, this is very Roger Dean-ish imagery.
The CD itself is issued by Sony Music Entertainment as a very thin cardboard "envelope" in which the CD itself is housed. There is neither a CD slipcover nor are there liner notes.
As a huge prog fan my general take on this album is that it is some pretty fine material and should please most, if not all prog fans. Very highly recommended.
My favorite Argentinian prog rock album.......2005-02-16
There is not much more to say after the excellent description of Benjamin, but as an Argentina native I could say that Espiritu was the best group I listened when I was a teenager. I was a great fan of Yes, ELP, Genesis, Floyd, etc and cannot forget the excellent show when they played "Crisálida" live (If I'm not wrong was in 1974). I remember being astonished by the introduction of the mini-moog, which by that time was certainly no usual among local bands. Some detractors may say that they sounded more like an european prog band rather than a latin one, but for me that wasn't a flaw, on the contrary. Regrettably, the band suffered some members changes and after that they released two more albums that didn't compare with the excellence of "Crisálida"
Another obscure prog rock album worth looking in to.......2004-07-20
Here another album that really took me by surprise. Argentina might be very well known for tango, but they also had their fair share of prog rock acts. Like Crucis, MIA, Alas, Bubu, Pablo "El Enterrador", Invisible, Ave Rock, and this particular band, Espiritu. Espiritu is by far one of the best Latin American prog rock bands I have ever heard (Crucis is up there too). Crisalida, released in 1975 was their debut LP, although they released a couple singles as far back as 1973. What you won't find much of on this album is Spanish/Latin/South American or tango influences. Instead they go for an Italian brand of prog, much in the vein of PFM or Celeste, with heavier passages bringing to mind Biglietto per L'Inferno or Semiramis. It's only the vocals (in Spanish) that reveal that they aren't Italian. Also surprising is the production is quite good (you'd swear these guys were European), because I know many Latin American prog bands, like Iconoclasta out of Mexico, might make great music, but their albums were often marred by sloppy and amateurish production. The cover artwork to Crisalida is by Juan O. Gatti, same guy responsible for the Crucis album covers (as well as many other Argentine rock album covers). Keyboardist Gustavo Fedel gives us some great use of Mini Moog, Hammond organ, piano, and Solina string synth, while guitarist Osvaldo Favrot (who also provides backing vocals) gives us some nice acoustic and electric guitar. When he plays electric, his style often brings to mind Michele Zarrillo of Semiramis. Vocals are provided by Fernando Berge, with Claudio Martinez handling bass, and Carlos Goler handling drums. The vocals are definately better than that of Crucis (a great band itself, who were better at instrumentals), and some nice vocal harmonies that sometimes draw comparisons to Yes. The album opens up with "La Casa de la Mente". It starts off rather electronic, with heavy doses of Solina string synth and Mini Moog. But after a couple minutes, the acoustic guitar kicks in, and you might think you were listening to PFM or Celeste. Nice vocals that obviously draw comparison to those two groups (as well as Yes). "Prolijas Virtudes del Olvido" is a rather short piece, dominated by vocal harmonies. I just love how this piece ends with Gustavo Fedel's Mini Moog, as it segues in to "Sue?os Blancos, Ideas Negras". Here Osvaldo Favrot gives us some truly stunning and atmospheric guitar work. Then the band rocks out in a manner not unlike many of those Italian heavy prog bands like Biglietto Per L'Inferno or Semiramis. Again the Spanish vocals revealing that this band isn't Italian. "Sabios de Vida" is an odd one, alternating by more mellow passages dominated by string synths and heavier rocking passages. "Eterna Evidencia" is the album's only instrumental piece, allowing Gustavo Fedel stretch out, mainly consisting of Moog solos. "Tiempo di Ideas" is another nice piece, showing more the mellow-end of the Italian spectrum. "Hay un Mundo Cerrado Dentro Tuyo" tends to get a little repetive, but the last piece, "Huy un Mundo Luminoso" sound like two separate songs. The first half is almost jazzy, with Fedel giving us some nice organ. The second half is basically a theme repeated over and over, first played on piano, then on synthesizers. What can I say? This is truly a masterpiece of prog rock, and Espiritu proves, as well as Crucis, that prog rock bands in Argentina can keep up with the very best in European prog acts. There are enough creative passages, nice vocals, and tasteful use of analog keyboards to keep the '70s prog rock fan happy. This current CD reissue, by Sony Music of Argentina, used LP-style packaging for the CD (although of course, cover shrinked to CD size), not unlike many of those Japanese reissues of prog albums that had surfaced of recent. If you're looking for some more great prog, Espiritu's Crisalida is a must!

Any recording by the celebrated Afro-Peruvian diva Susana Baca is an event worth waiting for. But the importance of this record goes beyond music. It was recorded in New York City during the fateful week of September 11, 2001, before a live-in-the-studio audience. Backed by her Peruvian combo, Baca is joined by two special guests: organist/keyboardist John Medeski and jazz guitarist Marc Ribot from Los Cubanos Postizos. Under Craig Street's guitarcentric production, Baca's angelic and atmospheric vocals float on Afro-Andean cajon, quijada, and festejo percussion instruments and dance rhythms. Along with some black Peruvian songs, Baca and company Peruvianize Caetano Veloso's Brazilian tune "13 de Mayo," Bjork's Nordic pop ballad "Anchor Song," and "Afro Blue/Zum Zum," a melding of Mongo Santamaria's hit and a traditional Cuban classic. In light of the horrible events surrounding this session, Susana Baca's music emerges as a powerful healing force. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
For live Susana, buy this, the authorized version.......2004-12-28
Susana Baca's first live album, Living Spirit in English, was recorded in New York partly as a response to the attacks of September 11 and to the unauthorized release of one of her concerts, sold as Lamento Negro. It's a decidedly low-key, live album. Susana's voice sounds as good as ever. The music is mostly slow and sensual, but the energy level does come up for such danceable songs as "Caracumbe," "13 de mayo," and "Se me van los pies," which also appears on her self-titled album. There are traditional songs, and several covers, most notably the last two songs: "Los Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Song)" sung in French, and Björk's "Anchor Song," sung in Spanish.
I can't describe "Anchor Song" as a cover, because I'm not familiar with the original, but I think it's quite lovely and haunting. She writes in the liner notes about liking that minimal way of making music and feeling she could make it her own. And I definitely hear that in the song. It's pretty spare, there's a give and take between Susana's vocals and the instrumentals (I'm not sure what instruments I'm hearing: accordion? Cello? Or maybe keyboard?). There's a beauty in the simplicity of the sonic textures, the repeated sequence of falling notes at the beginning, which changes to rising notes after the vocals begin, has a subtly sensual quality. Like hips swaying in a long, loose skirt. It doesn't sound particularly Spanish or Latin, or particularly any other culture. The other instruments (guitar, etc) add some Latin hints.
A good CD, but not her best.......2003-01-06
Maybe I am judging this one a bit harshly, but it certainly isn't the best Susana Baca CD. If you had to go with one, I'd rank ECO DE SOMBRAS well ahead of it, and her self-titled Luaka Bop release is superior too. While Susana Baca has a wonderful voice, and she is to be commended for all of her fabulous research to help bring Afro-Peruvian folklore back to life, this effort seems a bit repetative. On the entire ESPIRITU VIVO CD, the stays within a very narrow range of mellow 'lando' and 'festejo' songs (slow to mid tempo Afro-Peruvian ballads). Occasionally, the dabbles with jazz-type improvisations, but there just isn't the magic from ECO DE SOMBRAS here. That prior album had a magnificent all-star lineup which included John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood), guitarist Mark Ribot (who, in addition to his recent solo albums, has worked extensively with Tom Waits), bassist Greg Cohen (Tom Waits and John Zorn), and producer Craig Street (whose recent works include critically albums of Cassandra Wilson, Meshell Ndegeocello, and K.D. Lang). Together, they gave Baca's Afro-Peruvian sound a magnificent flair, a moody and eerie environment, combined with Baca's luminous voice, that produced a truly classic Afro-Peruvian CD. Here, I just felt a little dissappointed in what seemed like an album that is the equivalent of a concert in Cincinnati - simply running through the motions. Granted, Baca's motions are still wonderful, but this isn't her best effort.
Susana's new dimension.......2002-08-13
I heard almost all these songs live in Peru before they were released. I was amazed with "Aparicion", an old peruvian creole vals, she didn't even need a guitar, just her voice, and it was magic. She is very good in this kind of melancolic song and also in black peruvian music, which is so rythmic that you can't stop moving your body (A good example is Afro-Blue/Zum Zum, my favorite).
Don't hesitate in buying this CD, it's one of Susana's best.
Medeski and Ribot gives this production a new dimension, its a different sound than former releases. But Susana is sticked to her roots.
A Real Treasure.......2002-08-13
This Peruvian sparrow has won my heart with her jazz
interpretations of traditional songs. The bass player
steals the show. Even the box player is excellent.
Stimulating and soothing music will make you move.
The notes provide lyrics and translations.
Not Enough of a Good Thing.......2002-07-23
This CD is so beautiful. The music and her voice is very soulful. I like what Ms. Baca has done to the Bjork's piece "Anchor Song". "Autumn Leaves" is exquisite. There are various influences in this CD but Susana Baca has made this her own. Because this CD was recorded during the week of 9/11, it takes on an extra poignancy that cannot be avoided. Go buy this CD at once. Open your hearts and listen.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as previous albums.......2006-12-09
I hardly ever listen to this album, because in comparison to Susana Baca and Eco de Sombras I think it's not that interesting. It's nice, but just not as amazingly incredible as those two albums.
varied, touching, what a singer!.......2006-07-08
Almost a 5. I also have the SUSANA BACA album. Esprito Vivo is a little rougher but still very broad and pleasurable. Some songs here are on her other CDs. In some cases I think the band is a minus, a little too Santana like, not that I don't appreciate Santana. In other cuts, it's just great such as in perfect Feulles Mortes and her classic folk Peruvian sounds. She must love to sing because she imparts much pleasure and style without strain. Great rhythm naturally and very beautiful and fun.
A magnificent and bold cultural celebration.......2005-08-07
Traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms, religious chants, tribal drumming and waltz time signatures team up with smoky jazz riffs for a magical musical combination. Baca's rich, pleading vocals evoke pain, longing and joy in the same breath, while intelligent, poetic lyrics shake your soul harder than the ritual percussive thumping. The biggest surprise on the album is Baca's remake of Bjork's "The Anchor Song," a haunting musical rebirth that sets sail on the coast of Iceland and anchors down in Peruvian tradition. Baca offers a tribute to Mongo Santamaira with "Afro-blue/zum zum" and covers Caetano Veloso's "13 de Mayo." A magnificent and bold cultural celebration with an Afro-Peruvian soul at its core.

One of the best from the best!.......2006-05-18
I usually don;t write any reviews in Amazon, but could not believe that this mid-90s clasic by Ednita had no reviews!
Ednita Nazario has an incredible body of work spanning from the 70's to the present.
She has evolved through time and continues to be the most outstanding female pop star in Puerto Rico. "Espiritu Libre" is a must in any collection of this outstanding and talented artist.

"What You Want" is this infectious Dance-Pop song.......2005-03-08
1. "What You Want" 10/10
2. "Comes Right Back (Campfire Mix) 8/10
I really did not know much about this vocalist/songwriter until I heard this single. I quickly became a fan of hers. She has a charismatic, strong, smooth voice that is distinctive. This single will easily make you a Deborah fan if you are already into Dance-Pop music. "What You Want" is similar to "All I Want Is You (Come On Over)" by Christina Aguilera and "Irresistible" by Jessica Simspon, so you know this is gonna be really enjoyable! I like the B-side song "Comes Right Back" as well, it's a nice acustic pop song. So, if you are a fan of their work or songs from any other Dance-Pop artist, you will love "What You Want"! Recommended to any and all Dance-Pop music lovers!
Suprisingly Very Good!!!!.......2004-04-20
I am by no means a Debbie Gibson fan, but this song is actually very good! Much better than anything else I've heard from her. Is a good pop/r&b song. Unfortunately, the single didn't get the airplay it deserved, I guess because DJ's didn't take the one time teen queen seriously. They didn't want to adknowledge the fact that she is now a grown woman and her music is more mature- not the bubblegum stuff she did in the 80's.
KILLER TRACK!.......2001-03-22
This single is great and so is her new album "MYOB." Get it. Get it all. WHAT YOU WANT is an agressive pop/r&b track that reminds me of NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye." If you like that song, then BUY BUY BUY this single... and her album. It's killer!
Deborah Rocks!.......2001-02-06
This is a great song from a great artist. I strongly recommend this single!
Sensational Single.......2001-01-18
I'm a 60-year-old Deborah Gibson devotee. She committed the ultimate sin for a teen sensation, of course, in growing up. But unlike other sensations who have totally faded away she's kept in there, producing a series of superlative albums, each more impressive than the previous. This is a totally sensational single displaying both Gibson's outstanding composing talents and her growth as a singer. It's just a matter of time before the world discovers her anew and MYOB, with its provocative title and great cover, just might be the album to do the job. The biggest misstep in her career was the off-putting cover of "Anything Is Possible" which took a fresh-faced, appealing, out there young lady and made her look like someone who was in throes of depression and not very well dressed either. The album inside the cover had nothing to WITH the cover--it was bouncy, thoughtful, surprising, thrilling. Whatever was in Atlantic's mind? Covers are important! The new album looks to have everything Deborah needs to have people sit up and take notice. Here is a major talent who really has only just begun. By the way, amzon.com needs to combine its Debbie Gibson and Deborah Gibson listings. Debster, you have a lot to be proud of, and we your audience have a lot to thank you for.
