From Amazon.co.uk
Less than two years after the death of her mentor, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her crystalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Love Hurts" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. This compilation brings together her biggest hits, and shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. Through unfailingly tasteful song selection, brilliant occasional songwriting, and her cool, velvety soprano, Harris extended Gram Parsons's vision of "cosmic American music" and made it her own. --Roy Kasten
Album Description
Masterful at rock, country, folk, bluegrass, and more, Emmylou Harris is one of the most distinctive and visionary voices in contemporary music. The artist's lucid, achingly gorgeous vocals and a string of celebrated albums-many featuring her acclaimed "Hot Band"-have earned Harris eleven Grammys and made this alt-country/roots-rock innovator a legend in her own time.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!.......2007-06-14
I thoroughly enjoy every song on this CD, and listen to it often.
Add this to your collection!.......2007-01-13
I originally bought this CD for 1 or 2 songs. I saw her perform with Elvis Costello singing "Love Hurts" and I thought it was fantastic. I was disappointed when I couldn't find this duo singing; but, decided to purchase this CD. It really is very good. I am amazed by her talent.
Another vote for Emmylou's voice...........2006-08-25
I definitely agree, that listening to the best of this CD, is pure heaven...and to my ears, if you buy this beautiful album, just enable the following cuts and listen to them over.....and over...that's heaven....
Boulder to Birmingham
Pancho and Lefty
To Know Him is to Love Him
Orphan Girl
Michaelangelo
The Connection
Of course, if you buy this CD, you will probably have some different cuts that you also love. Emmylou Harris, we all love you and your voice, and your music...
Heavenly Heartaches & Highways...
To touch the heart........2006-07-18
The fact that Emmylou Harris is breathtakingly beautiful distracts only very slightly from her amazing grace as a singer. She is truly touched and truly moving.
One fault---this needed to be a two-disk set!.......2006-05-30
Otherwise, it's wonderful. Really does span the years, but I think there are some places where more emphasis is needed and would have preferred to see a second disk to do it.

While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
Sugary sweet.... Your speakers will never sound better!.......2007-07-19
Saw this group at Stagecoach fest in Coachella, CA. The lyrical parts are sometimes thought provoking, but the music steals the show. These young musicians are amazing and truly goosebump material. Harmonies are dead on and whoever mixed this stuff should produce every known band! Even if you don't like country or bluegrass, this disc is a breath of FRESH AIR! The bonus DVD is a nice addition. Sara Watkins is cuter than a daisy. Too bad so many listen to the pre-packaged garbage on the radio today... These guys should be on top!
Not bad, but not exceptional.......2007-07-18
I am a huge fan of Nickel Creek, have enjoyed them live, and own all their albums. Because of this, I would buy this set just for the live versions of "move that mountain" and "the fox". I already owned all the other songs on various albums, and was hoping for more live material. However, the DVD music videos are just okay, and the lighthouse song is truncated severely in the video. I was hoping for concert footage here too, rather than VH1/CMT videos. Oh well. The smoothie song video is a fun idea...
defective.......2007-06-13
This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.
Not Your Average Bluegrass.......2007-06-03
My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.
Great overview.......2007-05-26
This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.
This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection, but not the "Very Best".......2007-07-22
This CD is missing several of Tritt's recent hits -- "Strong Enough", "Country Ain't Country", "If I Lost You", "Love of a Woman" and "Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde". The collection would be more complete as a two disk set containing all of the songs from his "Greatest Hits: From the Beginning" album combined with all his newer songs.
favorites.......2007-06-28
if you love travis and don't want to collect all of his cds or if your just getting into his music then this is a great cd its a great one anyway you look at it.all of his best and most of my favorites are on it . plus its a great intro to some of the best country music for all the people who don't think they would like it try it you might like it don't let the word country scare you.
Travis Tritt.......2007-05-07
This country singer has a very unique voice, extremely easy listening. Well worth buying this album, i'm glad i did and you will be too.
Very Best of Travis Tritt.......2007-03-16
If you're a Travis Tritt fan, this one is for you.
Good but missing a few.......2007-02-08
Good Collection but missing a few good hits like "Put some Drive in Your Country" and "Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof" also "If I Lost You"
Overall a good collection worth having but they should have made this a 2 disk set with more good songs. Also "Bible belt" is missing.
I bought it and I like it. It's worth having.

Great Country Music Videos.......2003-11-01
This is wonderful music with great music videos.
I would love to rate it higher ...........2003-10-31
Next to George Strait, John Micheal Montgomery is my favorite country singer and I always look forward to when he releases a new cd. However, I wonder what he and/or his management were thinking when they decided on the songs for this cd.
This is nothing more than the "Greatest Hits" cd with a few different songs. In fact, 11 of the 20 songs on this cd were also on that cd despite the fact that he has cut four studio cds since then. I do see that "Long As I Live" is included on this collection but it should have been on the first one to begin with.
I know that JMM made his career out of singing those great country love songs however, he does have some great up-tempo songs as well. I noticed that many are missing not only from this cd but from "Greatest Hits" as well. Where is "Just Like A Rodeo", "A Few Cents Short", and "Love Working On You"? How about "Hello L-0-V-E", "That's What I Like About You" and "Four-Wheel Drive"?
Of course, I also notice several great love songs are missing as well that could have been on this cd. Songs such as "I Couldn't Dream", "Even Then", "Sinkin' In", and "Pictures". I think those songs as well as the ones I mentioned above would have been better for this cd.
As for the two new songs, I can take it or leave it with the walz-tempo tale song "Cool", it did not knock me over. However, "One Day Less" is yet another very strong JMM love song along the lines of "I Swear" and "I Love The Way You Love Me". I could see this one being played at weddings.
In summary, This is a great cd to pick up if you do not already own any of his prior cds. Otherwise, I would not bother with it.
More Tracks But Less Satisfying Than His Prior Greatest Hits.......2003-09-12
From his debut hit "Life's A Dance" in late 1992 through the rest of the '90s, John Michael Montgomery (with his easy going baritone) was one of country music's most reliable hitmakers. Over the past four years, however, he's had but one top ten hit, the chart topping heart tugger "The Little Girl." With his recent singles struggling, a hits collection was the logical choice for Montgomery's next release. A sequel to 1997's GREATEST HITS made the most sense, as Montgomery has ten top 20 hits not included on that first set. Instead, Warner Brothers went with this career encompassing VERY BEST OF that contains 11 of the 14 recordings already found on the strong selling GREATEST HITS.
Among the hits not included on either collection are the engaging "Ain't Got Nothin' On Us," "Love Working On You," and "Hello L.O.V.E." All are uptempo romps that would have contributed nicely to the ballad-heavy VERY BEST OF. The sequencing on VERY BEST OF distorts the musical nonbalance even more, with three fast tunes leading off, followed by a slew of slow stuff. The collection concludes with two new ballads: the paternal reflection "Cool" and the pledge of devotion "One Day Less." While pleasant, neither track seems likely to reverse Montgomery's recent chart struggles. Ultimately, while it contains more tracks and covers a longer period of Montgomery's recording career, this VERY BEST OF is not as enjoyable to listen to as his earlier GREATEST HITS.

Customer Reviews:
Any Hoyt is good Hoyt.......2007-04-22
Axton is as important to Americana as Dylan and Springsteen and deserves all the respect and attention given him and more. Seeing any CD release of his music is a pleasant suprise but many of his best are missing from this release. If you want Hoyt's best, you've got to have - 500 Miles, Hotel Ritz, Pride of Man, So Hard To Give It All Up, The Devil, Mountain Right, Cowboys On Horses With Wings, Wild Bull Rider, and the most beautiful song he ever sang: I Collect Hearts. Other glaring ommissions include- I Love To Sing, The Way Of The World, Southbound, I Left My Gal In The Mountains and California Women.
Excellent Collection of Hoyt Axton's songs.......2007-03-08
This CD is the best collection of Hoyt Axtons that I have found. I could not find much selection in retail stores.
Best compilation of overlooked star.......2007-01-09
Hoyt Axton grew up in the business of making music. With obvious regard to his mother and her song writing efforts, Hoyt carried the family music torch for several decades. It's a mystery why he never quite got his just due with Billboard charts and radio air-play. No matter, if you're interested in country, folk, story songs, or just fine music, Hoyt Axton's Flashes of Fire will not disappoint!
Excellent Retrospective.......2004-07-17
Flashes Of Fire's 25 diverse, brightly remastered tracks reach from a live '62 "Greenback Dollar" (later covered by the Kingston Trio) to 1990's whimsical "Fearless The Wonder Dog." For all the rock hits he penned (Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain," Ringo Starr's "No No Song"), Hoyt Axton's albums and singles surprisingly never cracked Pop's top 40 - only Country's - though his literate, left-of-center writing was as far from mainstream country as it could get. A wide range of artists such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and David Crosby were among those who covered him.
In the drug-hazy `60s and `70s, Axton's anti-drug songs never seemed square. Cheech & Chong make a cameo appearance on "No No Song." Steppenwolf's seering "The Pusher" cover powered Easy Rider's soundtrack. "Snow Blind Friend" (which Steppenwolf also did) viewed substance abuse with pity. As for Axton's country top-tenners, "Boney Fingers" showed his droll side, while "When The Morning Comes" (a duet with Linda Ronstadt) was, as its name implies, a beguiling morning-after song. A big bear of a man, Axton died at only 61 in 1999 after a career spanning writing, singing and Hollywood acting. His mom was Mae Axton who co-wrote Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel."

Great singer.......2007-05-08
I'd forgotten how good Melanie is, particularly the "Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers" track. I looked up a couple of other settings of that poem. They were more true to the original poem, but very stilted - or even grotesque. Melanie nailed the whole concept, in her melody, her pacing and certainly in her capture of a child's breathless delivery.
[This review is by my dad, for whom the disk was a gift. But I listened to Melanie growing up, and she's really good.]
The Very Best of Melanie.......2007-03-23
This is an exceptional album for Melanie fans, and victims of the 60's. All 21 tracks are good listening, I particularly enjoyed the "I don't eat meat" track, makes me smile each time I hear it. Even though I do!!
If you are a Melanie fan, this is a great album to have. Enjoy!!
Excellent compilation of original recordings, with great cover art........2007-03-18
These performances are Melanie's classic recordings, recorded 1968 - 1971. Priceless performances, at a great price.
Tracks 1, 4, 17, 20 from the Buddah album "Candles In the Rain" (1970). (Track 4, "Lay Down (Candles In the Rain)," is in its extended version on this CD, not the shortened single version on the original album. The extended version was originally released on the 1972 Buddah compilation "The Four Sides of Melanie.")
Track 2 from the Neighborhood album "Gather Me" (released on Buddah Records outside of the United States; 1971).
Tracks 3 & 16 from the Buddah album "The Good Book" (1970 or '71, can't remember!!).
Tracks 5 & 6 from the Buddah album "Melanie" (this album was just titled "Melanie" in the United States, but it was titled "Affectionately Melanie" in England and other countries; 1969).
Tracks 7, 8, 9, & 15 from the Buddah album "Born To Be" (1968).
Tracks 10, 19, & 20 from the Buddah album "Leftover Wine" (1970).
Tracks 11, 14, & 18 from the Buddah album "Garden In the City" (1971).
Tracks 12 & 13 from the original soundtrack recording "All the Right Noises," released on Buddah Records outside of the United States in 1970. These tracks were eventually released in the United States on the Buddah compilation album "Please Love Me" (1973).
i love mel.......2006-01-21
I met Mel at Philly folk fest, several yrs. ago.
My oldest sister made her music part of our family, as I now continue the tradition with mine.
My kid's know evry tune Melaine sweetly sings! They are young, and choose to listen to this angel on their own!
Thank you Melanie for what you are.
All our admiration, and Thanks to you, for being so nice, when you prob. don't even remeber doing so.
The world can be a better place because of people like you.
Please come back to PFF, if at all possible. Many fans await that terrific day!
Forever, a fan!
Joan & kids!
Folk-pop singer-songwriter of the early seventies.......2005-03-03
Born Melanie Sagfa but only using her first name for her music, Melanie burst on the music scene in 1969. In 1970, she had top ten hits in Britain and America with different songs - Ruby Tuesday, a Rolling Stones cover, in Britain, Lay down (Candles in the rain) in America.
Melanie's biggest hit, Brand new key, was a top five UK hit and a number one American hit. Sometimes dismissed as a novelty song, it became even more of a novelty song when the Wurzels wrote their own lyrics to it and released it (with Melanie's permission) as Combine harvester (Brand new key) - it topped the UK charts in 1976. Of course, you have to look elsewhere if you want Combine harvester - it's not here.
The New Seekers also liked to record Melanie's songs. Rival versions of What have they done to my song Ma both became minor UK hits, with Melanie doing slightly better than the New Seekers, who also covered Nickel song and Beautiful people.
While Melanie wrote plenty of original material, she also liked to record a few covers. Apart from Ruby Tuesday, this collection includes Melanie's versions of Lay lady lay and Mr Tambourine man, both written by Bob Dylan although the latter was popularised by the Byrds.
Melanie has a very distinctive voice that does not appeal to everybody although I love it. If you enjoy the folk-pop singer-songwriters of the early seventies, you will enjoy Melanie's music providing you like her voice. There have been plenty of Melanie compilations released down the years but this one is as good as any.

Career-spanning retrospective.......2005-01-18
Kix Brooks (no relation of Garth) and Ronnie Dunn failed to establish themselves as solo singers in the eighties but have proved extremely successful as a duo, their brand of rocking country music taking America by storm, selling many millions of albums. Kix is a dynamic live performer while Ronnie has an outstanding voice and sings lead on most of their songs.
When their second volume of Greatest hits was released in America, the UK division of their record company chose not to release it, but instead created a new compilation containing (supposedly) the best tracks from both compilations. The three new tracks (That's what it's all about, It's getting better all the time, Independent trucker) have all been included. With ten tracks that originally appeared on the first greatest hits set (still available in the UK), this collection is really aimed at those people who are new to the music of Brooks and Dunn - in the UK, that means nearly everybody as they have not made any impact outside the limited market for country music.
Given the nature of the compilation, it is difficult to fault the track selection, which features early classics such as Boot scooting boogie, Hard working man and Little Miss Honky Tonk as well as more recent songs such as Red dirt girl, Only in America and their duet with Reba McEntire, If you see him / If you see her.
If you don't have any of their music and you're sure that you just want one compilation, buy this. If you've already got their first hits collection, buy the second collection instead of this - you've got half the tracks already and the rest are on the second collection.

Ralph and Carter Stanley.......2006-12-06
This CD will also introduce you to Ralph's brother Carter Stanley whom Bill Monroe said had the most natural singing voice he'd ever heard. Many of the songs on this CD are sung by Carter and are beyond compare. Highly recommended introduction to Bluegrass or a must have for the serious bluegrass listener.
RALPH STANLEY STYLE OF HIS OWN.......2005-08-26
GREAT CD RALPH STANLEY TRULY HAS HIS OWN SOUND. HE TAKES BLUEGRASS TO A HIGH LEVEL. I RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ANYONE WHO APPRECIATES THE HIGH LONESOME SOUND.
Great introduction.......2005-02-17
I happened to catch a documentary on Ralph Stanley on TV and immediately ordered this tape. It was a wonderful introduction to blue grass for me. Ralph Stanley has a magnificent voice and he knows how to create wonderful harmonies.
Strongly Sentimental, Classic Mountain Bluegrass.......2004-09-25
Newly refamed thanks to the movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Ralph Stanley is a longstanding classic bluegrass/mountain Gospel star. With 200+ albums behind him, his newfound popularity is nothing new at all.
This "Very Best" CD doesn't do him justice. There is too much great music in his vault to draw from. Listeners will begin with this taste of his magnificent talent, and work their way through his vast discography.
"Man of Constant Sorrow" will be the most familiar song, with Stanley drawing long tones. You'll feel his pain through each note.
Fast-paced banjos and fiddles scream through songs like "Clinch Mountain Backstep." There's no room for words in this lightening picked instrumental. A number of other instrumentals grace the CD, like "Hard Times."
"Rank Stranger" walks slowly as a lament, causing me to wonder had Stanley been walking with me.
Many of the songs come from early 1970s, including "Sorrows."
Fans of everyone from Flatt and Scruggs to Lyle Lovett will discover something fun here. The tale-telling, the presence of voice, and the nod toward the fine traditions of music made in the deep Appalachian Mountains all work together in the singer and banjo player Ralph Stanley.
I fully recommend "The Very Best of Ralph Stanely."

Just get this CD and you will be happy.......2004-09-02
Ralph Stanley is a God of bluegrass and this CD shows us why. The man's voice has such character and presence and power. The music is as good as bluegrass gets and the harmonies are great.
There is a good variety of music on this CD. From barn burners to slow mournful dirges, its all here. You wouldnt think that an album full of songs about death would be uplifting, but it is.
Highly Recommended!
