This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

100% Ginuwine.......2006-05-23
Ginuwine second album named "100% Ginuwine" follows the bluprint of debut album "The Bachelor" and is almost as good. Tim "Timbaland" Mosley produced this album aswell, and the result shows when one of the greatest producers teams up with one of the gratetest performers. Ginuwine was so popular at the time that he could turn anything to gold. Just like on his debut there is a mix of Uptempo and Slow Jams here and there is also a obligatory cover of one of his hero's, This time around, Michael Jackson. Although "The Bachelor" is slightly better, Timbaland had matured as a producer and was even more innovative here, Infact he penned all songs but 2.
Apart from the first two songs that are interludes, somewhat, it starst for real with song number 3. "What's So Diffrent", a trademark Timbaland song with cool beats and fast pace. The song is about infedelity and has this angry sort of feeling all over it. Not surprising, it became a hit. "So Anxious", a slow jam that also was single released. "None of Our Friend's Business" goes one step further, it's defenitely one of his best ballads with memorable lyrics and great emotion. "Wait a Minute" is a decent midtempo and "I Know" a uptempo love song. "Do You Remember" Once again a slow jam that gioves great balance between ballads and uptempos. "No #1 Fan" a party song, but not among his best songs.
"Final Warning" is continues the trend, but feautures the late Aaliyah that also was a Timbaland protege. The duet could have been better but alright nonetheless. "I'm Crying Out" a midtempo song where a woman is slowly whispering words in the backround. "Two Sides Of The Story", one of his best ballads, unfortunately not a single but very good. "Same Ol'G" a uptempo, is perhaps my favorite Ginuwine song of this album, the song deals with self esteem and being yourslf no matter what people think of you. "All Nite, All Day" is a decent slow jam, perhaps the most seductive. "Toe 2 Toe" is a party jam, nothing special though. The album closes with song 16, that is a cover of MJ's 1980 hit "She's Out Of My Life", Not the easiest MJ song to interpret but Ginuwine makes a good cover out of it.
Overall, Ginuwine makes another great R%B album and at this point he's one of the greatest performers of the game. He and Tim, continues with the same path as on the debut albut and it works just fine. It isn't 100% flawless, but most songs are good and the collaboration between the two should defenitely have continued further. There are a few songs too many (16) but it's a 4'5 to 5 star album nonetheless. If you like good R&B, then get this for sure.
Bring back Timbaland!!!.......2006-03-24
Ginuwine's 1999 effort "100% Ginuwine" marked the last album that he and super producer Timbaland worked together exclusively on, and unfortunately may have effectively removed the six packed, pretty boy crooner from the R&B crowds' collective radar as well. Granted he's released 3 albums since this one. (none of which I've heard in it's entirety) But the days of rampant radio play and association with one of the games biggest hit makers are long gone. Why G made this move is beyond me, but a marked decline in his product and image has been the result. 100% was a fantatstic effort as it marked Ginuwine's growth and maturity as an artist from his slightly flawed but banging debut "The Bachelor".
No question that 100%'s strength as a release lies in the ballads. From the very first one "So Anxious" to "Wait A Minute" (my favorite!) to "No. 1 Fan" you knew that Tim wasn't playin' around with the tracks. G, while never the best singer in the game, delivers in the clutch over each, offering his best work in that department. As for the uptempos? Who cares?? No-one buys a Ginuwine album for those anyway, even though "Same Ol G" is a certified banger. Honestly, G had to know of the imminent fallout resulting from him parting ways with Timbo. While I applaud the need to forge a new path, he may have alienated those who put him where he is now. Now if this new album "Back II Basics" is as nice as I've heard it was, I may be eating these words. Stay Tuned.

"So Anxious", "None Of Ur Friends Business", "What's So Different?" and my favorite "Same Ol'G" are my favorite tracks off of 100% and he's beats are so sexy and on cue with his voice. You gotta love him!

I remember this album when I was in the 6th grade. I love this album and played it constantly and loud. This album has always been in my wish list since then(on paper). This album is as funky as the debut. This album boils over like a cauldron of lyrical passion,accentuated by bomb beats,clever and sensuous scenarios,and the charismatic singer's soulfully sincere delivery. This personable and distinctive style of storytelling is the album's foundation. This album has been certified 2x Platinum. Remember,this was 1999-2000.

Ginuwine's 2nd album, and it's his best. All the songs on the album are the best! i dont and cant skip through any of the tracks.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

I met Marie-Luise Hinrichs at a performance in New York City several years ago, on the campus of The Rockefeller University on the Upper East Side, where - every Friday at noon - there is a wonderful concert in Caspary Hall, oftentimes artists "warming up" for a weekend recital at Carnegie Hall or the Lincoln Center.
The audience at Rockefeller, myself included, is pretty picky about whom to truly applaud. Then Marie-Luise played. What can I say ? She played her heart out and - taking no prisoner - captured the hearts of the audience, mine included, in a whiff ! She is a true artist, through and through, who can mesmerize an audience with her love for the music that she brings alive on the key-board, like those beautiful pieces that Padre Antonio composed. What did he feel when he wrote that music ? You get a little closer to that answer when you listen to Marie-Luise playing Soler.
- I agree with the other reviewers that I do not really understand why we have not heard more about her. Along these lines: Waiting for more releases of Marie-Luise and for amazon to put her recordings back into the line-up !
A Sophisticated Player of Sensuous Spanish Music.......2003-09-11
Soler was almost half a century younger than Domenico Scarlatti with whom he is most often compared. Indeed he studied with Scarlatti. But he came along at a time when the contrapuntal baroque style was giving way to the oncoming 'style galant' (sometimes called 'rococo') and thus there is less counterpoint. He is Spanish through and through and the Spanish melorhythms are apparent in all he wrote. Much of the music on this CD is gently melancholic and in minor keys, although there are a number of faster, brighter pieces.
I had never heard of Marie-Luise Hinrichs but I'm wondering why. This woman is a superb pianist. The thing that strikes one first is her touch; she has a striking ability to coax lovely tone from her piano, and she possesses a velvety legato when required. Her playing has a sensuosity with no need to be propped up by speedy virtuosity, although she certainly has keyboard technique to spare. Another way of saying this is that she is making music, not showing off.
I had thought until I recently began exploring the music of Soler that he was a second-rate composer. But this CD, along with a couple by Isidro Barrio (who apparently specializes in Soler's music), have convinced me otherwise. Although the pieces were almost certainly written for harpsichord (and Scott Ross recorded some of it beautifully on that instrument), I find that Soler's music comes across better for me on the piano. But then I'm an old broken down pianist still in love with the sound of the instrument, so take that for what it's worth.
At any rate, I recommend this CD strongly.

Superb Soler........2003-01-04
You lucky Amazonians, while I had to get this cd from an Amazon affiliate on the other side of the globe, you guys are only a few clicks away from a true revelation.
I have listened to this cd at least weekly since January 2002 and my conclusion is simple: Hinrichs does here for Soler, what Horowitz did previously for Scarlatti. Suddenly a composer, who was known in the harpsichord world and even then mostly for his Fandango, gets the five star treatment thanks to the imaginative mind and the very agile fingers of a master pianist.
I know quite a few Soler recordings by van Asperen, de Larrocha, Puyana, Ross and Yepes, but this cd is from an entirely different universe. Thanks to Hinrichs choice of sonatas, Soler stands as a composer of both passion and reflection and great harmonic invention.
It is with a sense of amazement that I often read the enthusiastic responses to some of Martha Argerich's lesser recordings. Some of them really are cheap, fast and out of control. So Martha adorers pay attention to this disc. Helped by a technique that is on par with Martha's and equal passion levels everything here remains focused, tasteful and fully under control.
Like Horowitz' this is a very personal view of a composer, that gains it validity by its sincerity, devotion to detail and technical perfection. Some may argue that a number of the Sonatas are too slow, but in the absence of metronome markings from the composer that will always remain unproven. More important though, it is the meaning that can be derived from this music to the contemporary listener that warrants its classic status.
The quality of the recording, a co-production of EMI and German radio is very good and it is with anticipation that I am awaiting the second Soler cd that Hinrichs recorded earlier this year.
A classic!
The spirit of Padre Soler.......2002-10-28
This is a thoughtful and very Spanish playing of Soler's sonatas that especially brings out their depth and beauty. Although Padre Soler has some remarkable sonatas in major keys, he undoubtedly excels in the minor ones and in the modes that resemble them such as the Dorian. There is a preponderence of such works on this disk, which I greatly appreciate, and this brings out Soler's true spirit more than some other disks. (As excellent as Scott Ross' Scarlatti is, for example, his Soler is a disappointment.) I am also grateful for the slow tempos. Hinrichs is quite good technically and can play fast whenever she wants, but the reflective, philosophical pace she has on many of the sonatas is really just right. I have some of these works on other disks, and they do not show nearly the same depth if played too fast or in too frivolous a manner. The music really shows the unflinching, vigorous vitality and passionate soul of Spanish Catholicism.

Despite the value revisionists pretend to find in MacDowell and his contemporaries, the only really interesting 19th century American composer is the Creole Louis Moreau Gottschalk, who conquered Europe and South America with his colorful music and extravaganza piano performances. These recordings aren't new, and they don't include any of his solo piano music. But they do include some of Gottschalk's most characteristic music, in performances and recordings that are at least fairly good. It's a lot of fun for the money, and the accompanying booklet does a very good job of telling you what is interesting about Gottschalk's life and music. --Leslie Gerber

This CD had a piece that I was looking for everywhere that my father, a classical music connoisseur had been wanting for some time. When he received this CD as a gift, he was very pleased with the selection.
Very good performances of Gottschalk's works.......2005-04-13
The United States has produced very few great composers of anything that might be called classical music. Who was the best of them? While there have been many American composers, including MacDowell, Joplin, Rodgers, Copland, Gershwin, Sousa, Anderson, and Bernstein, well, how many were truly great?
My choice for the best of them is Gottschalk. And these discs give one a good idea of what he composed. A couple of "symphonies," some piano duets, some marches, a one-act opera. Yes, there are bombastic patriotic marches. And some precursors to ragtime. And plenty of what sounds like modern program music. Maybe my favorite of the orchestral works is "La Nuit des Tropiques." Now, is this performance as good as the ones by the Utah Symphony with Abravanel? Some folks think Abravanel's best one is better, but you may not be able to find it so easily. And I prefer this one.
Gottschalk's many solo piano compositions may be his best works, and they aren't included. But I still like these discs and performances.
An essential American composer.......2002-05-24
When I bought my first component stereo system some 30 years ago, Gottschalk was one record I took along to test the sound. Gottschalk remains as enjoyable now, but this cd would never be my test case of a stereo. The performance and recording are adequate but they lack the vitality one can find in other recordings. However, except for the lack of solo piano pieces, the album has a nice selection of Gottschalk's work and it's inexpensive. The last track on disc 1, Pasquinade, Caprice is probably his best known piece - a good introduction to his work.
Gottschalk's music is decidedly American - he grew up in New Orleans at the height of Creole culture. His father was of Spanish Jewish descent, his mother was French. However, Gottschalk began training in France at the age of 13. Thus he was very familiar with the European music of his era (1829-1869); in many ways, his music serves as a bridge between the European and American piano traditions - Scott Joplin being an example of the trajectory of American piano music. Depending upon your taste you may consider his music as classical, as salon orchestra music, as early decidedly American multi-cultural music or as just plain enjoyable fun.
My two cents.......2001-04-02
This is not a terrible album, but I do find it wanting. My greatest complaint is with the quality of the recordings and the CD's themselves (scratched too easily). My copy also has some misprints on the cover (the pieces are not listed in the correct order- if you didn't know any better you might think that you were listening to an arrangement of the Pourtuguese national anthem instead of "A Night in the Tropics"!). However, it is inexpensive (it is a 2 CD set) and worth it to those who are giving Gottschalk a first try. It also has an interesting and informative booklet on Gottschalk and the pieces featured (unfortunately I am not enough of an expert to verify their acuracy).
There are better performances.......1999-06-06
This album will disappoint Gottschalk fans. A better version of Night in the Tropics is the Maurice Abravanel & Utah Symphony. Only buy this one if you've already heard the Abravanel and want to know what it sounds like mangled by Europeans.

They are useless, the vocals have all been stripped from the mixes (except for the "Club Mix" and "Radio Mix"), and the only mix that has vocals ("Trance Vox"), only starts out with the a cappella, and then loses any vocals when the beat comes in. Club-friendly mixes these ain't. Stick to the original version.
