5 out of 5 stars "UHP! I'M AN IDIOT.".......2007-04-16

The last time I went home to Los Angeles - (You remember, I told you THAT story in my review for the Huffy Good Vibrations Men's 24-Inch Cruiser Bike. Are you paying attention here, or not?) - I called the BITTER BROTHERS and arranged a "Bitter Breakfast." That's a meeting where a bunch of us macho fellas - er, I mean, "Men" - get together to blow off steam over quiche and champagne. Uhm, that is, over Huevos Rancheros and strong, black coffee. (Let's be honest, the "blowing off steam" part could just as easily be called "Male Gossip", but . . . well, you know, I've faked a pretty good masculine facade for myself at Ammyland up to this point, and I'd hate to see it all go to ruin now.)

So, me an' my Bitter Bros were expressing our bitterness at The Sidewalk Café on Venice Beach one morning (perhaps the definitive "L.A. Experience") and observing the Frisbee-catching dogs, the rays-catching one-eighth dressed roller-skating babes, and the usual Carnival of Human Freaks parading past the Café, when I noticed this young cat playing some pretty fancy guitar over yonder. My soul emptied of its bitterness, and my glass emptied of its champa - my cup emptied of its coffee - I went to talk to the young cat and learned that he was a Russian bloke named VADIM, and I bought one of his self-produced compact discs. ["Vadim #1"; vadimrecords at yahoo dot com, or (310) 801-4212]

Well, I eventually just went crazy for track three: "Bossa-Nova." And having heard the term about a zazillion times (that's a lot!), I decided I simply must find out just what BOSSA NOVA really is. So I did an internet search and what I learned is that I have been in love with Bossa Nova music for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. {*He's a tad slow, folks, but give him four and a half decades and he'll figure it out.*}

You see, as a young kid in the early and mid-1960s, when the Bossa Nova craze was at its zenith, my Grandpa used to play it around his house. My Ma had an 8-Track tape (yeah, I'm bitter AND old, OK?) containing the gorgeously haunting song "The Shadow Of Your Smile." I loved it, and the song still makes me think of her. Wait a second. . . . . {*"Macho fellas" don't get teary-eyed, Stephen!*} . . . . Sorry. OK. Then later, in my mid-20s, I owned the classic Jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" on licorice pizza (that's LP, not 8-Track!) and I played the hell out of it (well, I would have if there had been any hell in it), falling in love with the beautiful saudade in Astrud Gilberto's voice. (Saudade? Look it up on Wikipedia.) Only Karen Carpenter's voice was infused with more, and - in my op - the standard ballads by Bobby Darin are the only example of Saudade in a male voice. (Despite the jocular exterior, my entire life is one of Saudade, but I don't know you well enough to tell you more.)

Then love came to me again in the form of Pat Metheny's three brilliant Brazilian-influenced albums, "The First Circle", "Still Life Talking", and "Letter From Home." About the same time, I owned a Cannonball Adderley album that included "Clouds" and "Morning Of The Carnival" and they were my favorite cuts, but I couldn't have told you why exactly. I also loved Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" from his "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" album, but the Bossa Nova connection eluded me. And when my Good Friend Melanie gave me Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul" recording, I loved it immediately from the first few notes down to the very last ones, and I rarely embrace new music that quickly. But I still hadn't made the Bossa Nova Connection. It took a Russian cat playing Brazilian music on Venice Beach to make this American dude finally realize that the thread running through it all has always been Bossa Nova, and that Bossa Nova is the thing I dig! Hey, it required only 43 years for me to piece it all together; I'm just a mental dynamo! {*"Uhp! He's an idiot."*}

So, I just bought "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and here's my assessment of each of its 16 tracks:

1. VIVO SONHANDO: Classic! I remember this one from my Getz/Gilberto album. Stan was one of the first major Jazz cats I got into.
2. WAVE: Wow! I've just learned that Antonio Carlos Jobim is the musician who transformed Samba into Bossa Nova.
3. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE: [Sniffle! Sniffle!] I want Astrud to sing this one at my funeral.
4. CORCOVADO: Not the version from the Getz/Gilberto set, but nice guitar from Almeida, and Getz really plays that tenor sax! {*Yeah, but can he pitch?*}
5. MY FOOLISH HEART: Marry me, Astrud! I promise I can learn to behave myself!
6. AMOR EM PAZ: Sheesh! Talk about Saudade. Love it!
7. MISTY ROSES: Makes me misty. Astrud, play Misty for me.
8. DESAFINADO: Jobim is the Boss of Nova.
9. SO NICE (SUMMER SAMBA): Oh, gee, I swear, I melt. One of my very favorite tracks. Too short! More! More!
10. WINTER MOON: "Winter" warms my heart. "Great Getz!"
11. INSENSATEZ: Well, let's face it, along with "The Girl From Ipanema", this is the face of Bossa Nova.
12. DINDI: Astrud sings. What else ya need to know?
13. BAHIA: Cool!
14. THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: I prefer the version with Getz and Astrud, of course, but great melody regardless.
15. O GRANDE AMOR: Beautiful!
16. MEDITATION: I dunno; let me contemplate it further.

I see that I used the word "love" seven times in this review. I don't ordinarily use that kind of language, but the collection IS called "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and I guess I'm a lover after all. {*Nah. He's an idiot.*}

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-11-05

A little too many instrumental music only songs, but otherwise good compilation of popular bossa nova love songs. Although, I would highly recommend Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour if you like the collection on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Listened to it at a friends house.......2006-03-19

I don't have any Bossa Nova music, except for the Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour, so when I listened to this CD at my friends house I knew I had to get it. It gives you a good representation of the classic Bossa Nova. Good variety of songs by the traditional performers. It is also great soft music to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2005-09-17

The music on this album is smooth and inviting. The perfect music to play as a background for a cocktail party - or for intimate moments with the one you love. Even in the coldest temperatures, this album will warm you up!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, melodic, intimate.......2003-02-10

Outstanding collection of romantic tracks from the giants of Verve's roster. No surprises really among the selections, but who wants a jarring surprise in the middle of a romantic interlude? This set goes down so nicely it won't matter that you may have most these tracks in so many other anthologies.

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Album Description

Doris Day's biggest hit, 'Sentimental Journey' was recorded while she was a vocalist in Les Brown's band in the mid-1940s. Highlights from these two original albums on one compact disc include 'Fly Me To The Moon' and 'The More I See You.' (Collectables)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic 1965 recordings.......2007-01-13

Highly polished, studio recordings -- with a bit too much reverb for me. It was all the rage at the time. My opinion are the recordings she made with Nelson Riddle and Harry Zimmerman are better. The "Sentimental Journey" track on this recording is probably the one you know and love from radio play.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Timeless.......2005-03-09

Growing up with Doris Day music and movies, I knew the simple fact that here was a woman that could sing, act, dance, look beautiful and make me smile or tear up with each performance. Then one evening a year ago I was watching a performance of my daughter's High School Ball Room Dance team (which is now a hot sport amongist teenagers) perform, and a song came on they were dancing to that blew me away. When I asked the coach who was singing it, I found out it was Doris Day's recording of "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps". No girl next door here, this song simply sizzled. The other tunes on this CD are great, but for this song alone I would buy this. Doris Day movies or music are simply timeless.

5 out of 5 stars One word is all I need: Beautiful!.......2004-06-25

This is not the first Doris Day CD someone should buy; you should start with one of her greatest-hits CDs such as "Golden Girl" (which I've earlier reviewed). But if, after listening to this, you decide you want to hear more of that great voice, this should be one to get early. It's truly a beautiful example of what Doris could do.

Most of Doris Day's big hits were in the 1950s; this CD represents a Doris Day of about 10 years later. It is a combination of two LPs which she recorded two months apart in 1964 and Columbia released (the second-recorded one first!) in 1965. So it's a slightly more mature Doris Day, but just as nice to listen to as the Doris of the 1950s.

The two LPs combined in this CD are actually two quite different sets of tunes. "Doris Day's Sentimental Journey" consists of a collection of songs that were old standards even in 1964, plus a remake of her very first hit, the title tune of the album, done in a rather different style from the 1940s version. "Latin for Lovers" contains a number of songs that were mostly fairly new in 1964 (some of which might be called standards now!) with Latin origins. (Some were composed by the man who introduced the bossa nova to the USA, Antonio Carlos Jobim.) Only one of the songs on "Latin for Lovers" was one I'd heard Doris do: "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" ("Quizas, Quizas, Quizas" in the original Spanish). All the songs on both LPs, now on one CD, reminded me of why I've always considered Doris my favorite singer; every single one is done beautifully.

What more can I say? Of course it gets 5 stars! I wish I could give it six!

5 out of 5 stars Voice without peers.......2003-06-25

I remembered her voice as just one of those flashy voices from Hollywood movies.Alas, those were mostly in mono and simply had yet to discover the true virtue of her voice.

Then in Amsterdam I found some great soundtracks with old works from Henry Mancini.Next to his works was some this rather shy album of Doris Day.

When I heard her interpretation of * Three coins in the fountain & Quiet nights of quiet stars *,I couldn't believe my ears. Her voice has such profound timbre with such grade delicacy of
the acoustic instrument, one just brought to life by finest artisan alive. Her voice is so vibrant and resonant like any voice I have heard before.

I asked my friends at my home to listen some music on my system and I asked them who is finest female voice on the planet? Some said Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald....list goes on.

With some reservation I said for me it is from now on Doris Day.
Needles to say that made them laugh until they have heard sheer delicacy of her voice.

Without any reservation, with experience in classical music and Jazz, her voice is among finest voices, period. It is a great pity that she didn't extend range of her materials more into demanding materials of Jazz standards. I'm scare to think what kind of the treat that would be.

Her voice is like a finest High-End audio instrument, depending only on quality of material. If you treat the same with care it will reward you with delight. Ribbon speaker owners and those with generally fine systems, listen for these two songs on
this album. It will define you standards, what can you expect in human voice. In this case. exquisite, profound and unique voice of Doris Day.

In today mediocrity of quality in almost every sphere of human awareness, let her voice remind you that some things posses a true substance.

5 out of 5 stars Doris recorded great albums while the Beatles took over USA.......2003-06-01

The first album on this twofer, Sentimental journey, was recorded in 1964 and was something of a nostalgia trip for Doris - truly a sentimental journey back to the songs of the forties. The title track is a re-recording (and updating) of the song that provided Doris with her biggest hit during her days with Les Brown. Some may regard the new version as sacrilege, but I love it, as I also love the original.

The album begins with The more I see you. Originally an American hit for Dick Haymes, Chris Montez had an international hit with his cover in the sixties. I remember you was originally a top ten hit for Jimmy Dorsey but Frank Ifield had a huge sixties hit with it around the world, going to the very top of the UK charts. At last and Serenade in blue were popularised by Glenn Miller. Among the other songs here, you can listen to covers of Come to baby do (another song Doris originally recorded with Les Brown), I'll never smile again (Tommy Dorsey), I'm beginning to see the light (Harry James), It could happen to you (Jo Stafford) and It's been a long long time, which topped the 1945 charts in America via two different versions (Bing Crosby, Harry James).

The second album on this twofer, Latin for lovers, recorded in 1963, features a mix of standards and songs of Latin origin, all given a gentle bossa nova rhythm. On Be mine tonight, Doris actually sings a verse in Spanish - the only time she ever did that. Of the standards, Fly me to the moon and Our day will come are the best known. One of the Latin songs, Perhaps perhaps perhaps (a translation of Quizas quizas quizas) became popular in the UK as a consequence of its use in a TV commercial. This is an excellent album that sets its own mood.

Doris could not compete with the Beatles for sales, although she continued to record albums of the highest quality - and they have stood the test of time.

In the UK, these two albums were issued on separate twofers - Sentimental journey was coupled with What every girl should know, while Latin for lovers was coupled with Love him.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sensual "take me away" music!.......2007-04-17

This is the best CD of Latin love songs ever produced. The string
orchestrations flow like silk while the Latin rhythms sway you like a
warm tropical breeze. It reminds me of dancing under a starry, velvety
night sky on the terrace of a little cantina in Manzanillo, Mexico one
summer night. Unforgettable!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Not Italian But I Love It!.......2006-08-20

Yes, I'm not Italian but I love it! The songs on this CD are just wonderful.
Starting with track 1, "Be True to Me (Sabor a Mi)" passing true track 5, "Magic Is the Moonlight (Te Quiero Dijiste)", 12 "Morning of the Carnival (Manhã de Carnaval)", 16 "One (Uno)"; all just a PLEASURE to listen to. Al Caiola's guitar playing is phenomenal. I absolutely recommend it. This one really deserves a five stars ratings.
I also recommend his album "Italian Gold - Treasured Collection", another SUPERB Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Al!.......2002-09-07

Oh, Al! This is such a wonderful CD. When I come in at night worn out from work, I get a cup of coffee, stretch out in my favorite easy chair, kick off my shoes and listen to Al Caiola. I own a few of his records. It's nice to have his music on CD, and now that I have one-it's like good chocolate! I can't buy just one, I will buy others!

In the early 1970's I worked with a 'Salsa' band. I was hired because I played piano, organ, and accordian.

Sabor a Mi was popular on the latin radio stations, and I learned it from an early recording. Later, I learned other music, all latin or soft jazz from listening to keyboard players, but I also listened to Al Caiola. He has thrilled audiences with his guitar. He's a true stylist. You can listen to him, and you will know who's playing. He is very distinctive, and has both the technical skills and the natural talent to make his recordings interesting and beautiful. If you've never heard Mr. Caiola play, then do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It is lovely, it's romantic! Oh, Al!

5 out of 5 stars Doris charmed me. .......2007-05-10

This CD has very good composition.
I am especially pleased with "FLY ME TO THE MOON" in the highest.
She who is also a singer and also an actress demonstrates the talent to the power of expression of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Sultry Side of Doris Day!.......2006-09-15

Sultry is not and adjective that quickly comes to mind describing Doris Day, but it definitely applies here. Released at the height of the Bossa Nova craze and at the height of her fame in the early 60's, Latin for Lovers is one of her finest recordings. Sexy, and sensual, Doris has never sounded better singing these Latin songs (in English, of course, though she does sing a few phrases in Spanish on one song). A few songs, like Fly Me to the Moon have been rearranged and fit perfectly with the rest of the sets Latin mood. Love Him!, released around the same time period, is not quite as good, lacking in focus, but is also one of her best with some unusual cuts: Love Him!, which is a highly dramatic reading for Doris; Willy Nelson's Night Life and some nice covers of standards from that time. This twofer is a real treat and a bargain at any price!

5 out of 5 stars Two excellent albums plus rare bonus tracks.......2003-08-06

The album that makes up the first half of this twofer, Latin for lovers, features a mix of standards and songs of Latin origin, all given a gentle bossa nova rhythm.

The album that makes up the second half of this twofer, Love him, is dominated by ballads, all superbly sung by Doris. The songs come from a variety of source, including lovely covers of Elvis Presley's Can't help falling in love and Fool such as I (although the latter was originally a Hank Snow country song). There is also an amazing cover of Willie Nelson's Night life, which has been given a very dramatic scene-setting intro that Willie never envisaged. It works well and once you get past the intro, the song sounds exactly as you would expect it to. Several other songs will be familiar to those who know the music of the fifties and sixties.

Two rare bonus tracks, Moonlight lover and A whisper away, have been added to make this even more desirable than it was anyway.

    5 out of 5 stars Classy!.......2003-01-03

Two of D. Day's best albums. "Latin . . ." is perfect candlelight and wine music. Every track is a masterpiece but "Summer Has Gone" gets to me like no other song. Likewise, Willie Nelson's "Nightlife" on "Love Him" always pleases. A little out of character for DD with a raucus start and an elegant finish. It's magnificent. If you have no other Doris Day CDs in your collection, these are the two to start with.

    5 out of 5 stars Moonlight Lover.....did you know?.......2002-10-11

Doris Day said that she and Tommy Oliver had the great idea of recording an album called, "I've Got A Right To Sing The Classics!". The project never went anywhere, again most probably because her movie career overshadowed her recording career and demanded so much of her time. While recording the songs for Love Him, they added two which were slated to be released as singles.
They are here, added to this set, but were never released. They are Moonlight Lover as well as A Whisper Away.

Moonlight Lover is penned by Tommy Oliver. I believe this was a prototype for the album, I've Got A Right To Sing The Classics, that never happened. Moonlight lover is lyrics put to a contemporary Moonlight Sonata. And MAN is it gorgeous! Sexy, pleading, begging.............WOW!
Now the other, A Whisper Away, is a great title, but the song itself is not that good. Don't think it could have carried well as a single. Of course, Doris gives it her all.....and that's nothing short of PERFECTION!
The amazing thing about the 60's for Doris Day is that she was the number one box office star during much of that time. Girls in their high school yearbooks, put her down as who they felt was their most favorite and who they wanted to be most like. The irony is that she had few attempts to give high school kids recordings aimed at them. One of Doris' best attempts at that was her Theme from "Do Not Disturb". OThers were "Move Over Darling", and "Send Me No Flowers". But who knows what might have been if they had commissioned Tony Hatch (of Petula Clark fame), Les Reed(sp?), Henry Mancini, more Burt Bacharach and Hal David, or used more Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil pens?
    Unfortunately, the story is told.
But there should be more on the way. Somewhere, Terry Melcher and Doris have her recordings from her TV show, and Doris Day's Best Friends (Ever heard Doris sing "My Heart" from that? WOW!), and both of her TV specails, one from 1971 with Perry Como, and 1975 (Doris Day Today with John Denver). So there is still some more to come. Perhaps, if we're lucky, she's been recording all along at her sons, Terry Melcher's place right near her home in Carmel. He has a recording studio there. We might eventually end up with some stuff we don't yet know exists!

        5 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece.......1999-10-15

I bought this CD after hearing one track on my local FM station. It is beautifully arranged (as good as Don Costa's best) and perfectly executed. The selection of melodies is also perfect. On a scale of 1 to 10 this disc rates a 12! WOW!!

5 out of 5 stars I never get tired of this latin music and the artist who.......1998-10-20

plays it in a contempory style. Always makes me want to get up and dance---rhumba, cha-cha, mambo, samba, or whatever!

5 out of 5 stars You couldn't ask for better music.......1998-10-20

The music is great and the artist makes the old familiar tunes come alive and you want to dance. We never tire of listening to the music and wish we could find more CD's by Mr. Shaffer.
