5 out of 5 stars Different and dazzling.......2005-06-12

This CD is produced by The Texas Music Project, a joint project of The Texas Music Educators Association and private enterprise, in order to preserve Texas' unique musical contribution to the world's culture. A previous volume spotlighted local artists from all over the state, some of them world famous (The Dixie Chicks) and some known only locally. This volume features the music of Texas' Latino artists and it is sensational. I was driving through Texas when I bought it on a whim at a Starbucks in Abilene. I played it over and over again all the way to Dallas. This is a dazzling sampler of contemporary Tex-Mex music, which incorporates elements of jazz, rock, country-western, Mexican, Caribbean and god knows what all else to form a unique sound. The album showcases the extraordinary diversity of Tejano music. Most of the lyrics are in Spanish, but there are a few that are in English. This CD is lots of fun. It's sensual, passionate, rhythmic and textured. Its rhythms are infectious. It's hard to listen to this one and sit still. I especially love the Gypsy-style Austin band, Del Castillo. The virtuosity of the individual musicians is breathtaking. Another favorite is Ruben Ramos ("a first tier pioneer of modern Tejano music") performing the catchy "Mi Prietita Consentida." But there's not a bad cut on the whole CD. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase.......2007-01-09

This CD provides a terrific overview of Texas music. Granted, the listener may not like everything s/he hears, but given the broad range of musical styles and offerings, such a result is unavoidable. The CD definitely informs and entertains. Then you can go out and specialize for subsequent purchases!

4 out of 5 stars Something for Texas to brag about.......2006-07-23

Even though this is an anthology album containing selections from other CDs made by Texas artists, all this music was new to me. I don't think it's as good as the Tex-Mex edition of this series, which offers a greater variety of styles. (This one has too many traditional blues style cuts and Grade-B vocals that on a few occasions give it a generic sound). However, there are some cuts on this CD that I think make it essential listening. I flipped over Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind of Crazy." I love its sentiment and its exuberance. It really expresses the joy of a particular kind of infatuation. I could listen to this one over and over again. I was similarly impressed with Slaid Cleaves' lyrically very sophisticated "Broke Down." Cleaves' sensitive yet manly performance is also appealing. It took me a couple of listenings to appreciate Marcia Ball's "She's So Innocent," but it has become one of my favorite cuts. At first it sounded like a bad lounge act, but when I listened more closely, I found the wistful lyrics really interesting, and Ms. Ball's jazzy arrangement and performance give the whole CD sophistication it might not have had otherwise. Ditto for Asleep at the Wheel's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie." There are also cuts from such internationally famous Texas performers as Willie Nelson, Boz Scaggs and The Dixie Chicks. (Where's Lyle Lovett?) It's all quite entertaining. This CD and the Tex-Mex edition ("Don't Mess With La Musica de Texas") of this series are must-haves for anyone who is even mildly curious about contemporary Texas music. The "Don't Mess With Texas Music" series is very impressive. Texas rightly has something to brag about here.

5 out of 5 stars If you like music........2007-05-05

I received this CD as a gift. I like all kinds of music but would not have bought anything by these artists normally, except for Chris Rea.

This CD is killer. Each listening brings out a different "cut" for repeated replaying. I don't like everything on the CD, but the good tracks out weigh the bad 10 to 1.

I have purchased CD's by some of these artists. That is the best recommendation I can give. My music horizons were broadened by this CD.

    3 out of 5 stars Generic Texas.......2006-07-26

The trouble for me with this CD is that there is not enough variety. There are only about three or four basic rhythms and almost every other song is a honky tonk blues number. Blues has a very limited range and these artists do not seem bent on stretching the boundaries. I found most of the songs predictably structured with familiar chord progressions. There is also the problem that many of the lyrics are in written from a contemplative point of view, which also gets monotonous. The only number that really grabbed me immediately was Nanci Griffith's "Lone Star State of Mind," although her accent is extremely peculiar. She sounds like more like an Iowa farm girl transplanted to the San Fernando Valley than a native Texan. But I cannot get her song out of my mind. This CD is not bad as background music for beer-drinking socializing or driving down a lonesome Texas highway, but for the most part I found it only mildly interesting. I've listened to it six or seven times now, but my initial impression remains the same. In general, I like this series, but the Tex-Mex volume remains far and away the best.
