Linda or Lola?.......2007-05-26

Who is a better ranchera singer, Linda Ronstadt or Lola Beltrán? Lola has a deeper voice, but both can certainly belt out a song! It's hard to say who is better. It's like choosing between Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo.

The sad fact, though, is that the fidelity of most of Lola's albums is very low...they sound like they were recorded on a home tape recorder. And since she has now passed away, there will never be any new recordings.

I am not a Mexican, but I have circulated for years in the Mexican parts of Los Angeles, and I have travelled throughout Mexico, enjoying the native musicians on street corners and in parks and cafes. I have always wondered about those who praise Lola Beltran as the "great" Mexican singer. She sounds too urbane and too international to me--in the manner of Catarina Valente. I always thought the real spirit of Mexican music was better represented by such as Las Hermanas de Alba. And now Linda Ronstadt carries on the true Mexican tradition in her later work. Whatever else she may have sung in her career, I find in Linda's Mexican singing the authentic flavor of Old Mexico.

Last night as I was browsing the reviews of this record, I got curious about the various comparisons to Lola Beltran. Not having listened to Lola for quite some time, I went through a stack of stuff from both Linda and Lola to refresh my ear.

My conclusion. Lola is good, but Linda is better.

Linda has a much broader emotional range. With all of her musical excelence, Lola has a dreadful sameness from song to song--even songs which should be handled quite differently. For example, It is quite disconcerting to hear Lola back to back on "Ya No" and "Me equivoque contigo"--songs which should be very different in emotional tone sound all too similar. As it happens, I heard the latter song on the radio a few days ago by a male artist. His rendition shoots Lola's down the drain.

By contrast, Linda's emotional range is both subtle and immense. For example, from her "Tata Dios," which wrenches me to tears every time I hear it, to the mock seriousness of her "El toro relajo," which is always worth a good laugh. After reviewing a batch of Lola's work this morning, I can't imagine her ever having such an effect on me. Lola still strikes me as a city person trying to sing country. Whatever else Linda may have done in her life, she somehow manages to dig her toes into the true country soil of Old Mexico.

Let the sun shine in..........2005-01-13

I don't know the first thing about the "authentic" style of this music, the native singers, or if Linda has the correct spanish phrasing... All I know is that when I play this CD, a little bit of sunshine enters my gray Philadelphia winter days, and it makes me want to do a bit of dancing! (And I'm sure my dancing isn't the least bit "authentic"...) Plain and simple, this CD is just a lot of fun.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH ANYONE THAT SAYS ANY DIFFRENT. WE HAVE ALOT OF SPANISH (MEXICAN ) SINGERS. THAT CALL THEMSELF SINGERS AND DONT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THEY WAY LINDA SINGS. Marriner and Romeros unbeatable.......2003-02-11

These are probably the best recordings of the Rodrigo guitar concertos available. There is noticeable analog tape hiss in the background but this is a small price to pay for these excellent, classic recordings. The technical precision of Pepe Romero on the guitar along with the excellent performance of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the equally good sound engineering is a rare treat. Rodrigo and the Romeros seem meant to go together so this CD set is a must have. It's unfortunate that an equally good recording of the Concierto Serenata is not included. The performance on the harp is disappointing. I am puzzled why Catherine Michel breaks into chords where Rodrigo wrote arpeggios. If this is artistic license it is a poor choice. The sound of the harp often fades behind the sound of the orchestra too. The entire recording seems poorly engineered. The orchestra sounds distant, as if it is poorly mixed or too few microphones were used. In the absence of a better performance, the Concierto Serenata would have best been left off the disc.

2'fer bargain.......2001-11-27

Wow!! Fantastic stuff that is highly recommended for classical music listeners old and new. Hats off to Phillips for collecting these songs by Spanish maestro Rodrigo and presenting them on two discs. Besides the more familiar fare like "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" and "Concierto de Arunjuez," which I never get tired of, there are various other conciertos that are so soothing and extremely relaxing. This is music to park your mind in tranquility bay with, a blissfull audio experience, orchestral nirvana for the classical music neophyte. The "Madrigal Concierto" is especially note worthy, the two guitars and orchestra are magical as they play in unison, elevating the listener to heights unknown and back. There are various performers on this disc and all are outstanding. The performance of Los Romeros on guitars and Catherine Michel plucking her heavenly harp are exceptional and simply perfect to my ears. These are all recordings from the 70's and early 80's but have been digitally remastered for a crystal clear sound. If you like the music of Joaquin Rodrigo you will love this compilation of 155 min+ of his best compositions at an incredibly low price.

Inroduction to Rodrigo.......2001-07-28

I cannot compare these works with others by this composer because this was my first experience of him, but for the information of anyone else who is not familiar with Joaquin Rodrigo, I would describe him as a Spanish Aaron Copland in that they were contemporaries and they both incorporated national folk music into their compositions. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone of any age not enjoying these works.

the best interpretation by the romeros.......2000-08-18

this cd are the best works for guitar by rodrigo, and the best interpretation by the romeros, especially Pepe Romero. His friendship with rodrigo was very important for the interpretation of the concierto de aranjuez and the concierto madrigal with his brother Angel. A great work and i am excited with this cd.

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil,and Argentina.The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming.The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section.The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here.Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

An outstanding survey of recordings for harp and orchestra........1998-12-21

There's nothing quite like classical music to soothe the stress of the afternoon commute (especially on Greater Boston's Rt. 128 or your local equivalent). Harp music, in particular, has an extraordinarily calming effect. I'm not exactly sure why that is (darnit Jim, I'm an engineer not a behavioral psychologist) but I can personally vouch for the results. This two-disc set contains some of the finest music for harp and orchestra ever composed.

Disc 1 contains familiar harp concerti by Handel and Mozart, followed by a lesser known work by Eichner. The melodies and performances are guaranteed to work their way deep into your soul. Ursula Holliger (oboe virtuoso Heinz Holliger's wife, in case you were wondering) produces a stellar performance in the Handel concerto. Her technique and interpretation are both insightful and strongly delivered. The orchestras in question should by no means be ignored. I Musici, The London Symphony, and Musica Antiqua Koln (for the Handel, Mozart, and Eichner, respectively) are all names to be reckoned with in the field and they do not disappoint.

Disc 2 consists of more modern works by composers less familiar even to classical music fans except, of course, those who know Villa-Lobos and Rodrigo for their classical guitar music. The works on the second disc are somewhat less accessible to the casual listener, but after repeated listenings, I find them well worth the effort.

The falsetto vocals and improvised violin arrangements that mark El Ave De Mi Sonar: Mexican Sones Huastecos aren't necessarily for the casual music listener, but they typify a unique genre. Sones huastecos are festive, poetic folk songs highlighted by those elements, along with rhythmic-guitar accompaniment. Talented trio Los Camperos de Valles excel at this innovative form of music-making, trading off vocal duties and effortlessly interpreting new lyrics by producer and poet Artemio Posadas. It makes for an enjoyable listen that honors the past and still feels fresh. El falsete mas hermoso y la poesia mas romantica.......2005-08-06

This is not the most informative introductory recording of son huasteco, the regional style of Mexican music associated with the Huasteca region along the gulf coast of Mexico. However, this is one of the most beautiful son huasteco recordings ever released.

The coplas are written by Artemio Posadas, a musicians who has labored for a long time at the East Bay Center for the Arts, in Richmond, CA, teaching youth son huasteco and son jarocho--these are some of the most beautiful lyrics ever to be written. On La Malaguena for example he tells his beloved:

Tengo celos de la luna
que cada noche te admira
aunque lejos mi fortuna
sin esperanza se viera
yo te canto una por una
las rimas que tu me inspiras.

Los Camperos de Valles, who are the most well-known son huasteco trio outside of Mexico, are from Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosi. Marcos Hernandez and Gregorio Solano perform the coplas for the sones with exquisite expression and musicality. Joel Monroy, the first violinist for the Camperos after Heliodoro Copado stopped playing with them, plays the voilin brillantly.

This recording was originally released independantly and I congratulate Smithsonian institute, becuase the way that they remastered the recording makes the lyrics and the music stand out more clearly.
