5 out of 5 stars Worth making room for. .......2007-07-23

Parsifal is a fantastic opera with mood, layers of tone and symbolic references to spare. Any recording of this epic opera is worth listening to. In the case of the newest DG release with Placido Domingo in the title role and Christian Thielemann conducting, this combination is enough to make it worth adding to your CD library. This live recording is not only a testimony to the professionalism of the two individuals listed above but to the entire cast, starting with the Placido Domingo who is terrific and who, once again, proves his place in opera history as our most versatile and gifted tenor. Even as late as the middle of Act III Mr. Domingo continues to sound strong and commanding in the role (again this is a live recording). He owns the role and, based on recent Parsifal's without him, I am not sure there is anybody around who is truly ready to take over (Hang in there Placido and sorry Ben). Christian Thielemann's reading of the score is wonderful, no big departures here, not too fast and not too slow but a well-balanced tempo throughout the entire recording. Where he excels is in the softer, tender moments of Act III; the Good Friday music specifically. Parsifal is a tone poem with multi-layered orchestral parts that seem to just illuminate and overlap while developing Wagner's most gifted talent. Waltraud Meier delivers her typical wonderful rendering of Kundry - no easy task, with all the characteristics needed: crazy in Act I, a seductress in Act II, and mute in Act III (though she never leaves the stage). Her Act II encounter with Parsifal was wonderful and convincing; her entrance and announcing of Parsifal draws one in and sets up the remainder of the Act. Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz was the only area where I took issue. I love the role of Gurnemanz and believe he carries some of the most important and, in some cases, beautiful singing in the opera; the voice must be just right. Here, I found the dramatic weight missing. By Act III I warmed up to his sound and `lyrical' rendition of the role but still wanted something deeper and with more command. All other roles, as well as the chorus, were exceptional. Be advised: this is a live recording so you will occasionally here stage noise, mostly swords clanking. As I mentioned this is a wonderful opera and this new release is worth making room for in your collection. [JG] A review from OperaOnline.us.

4 out of 5 stars Curiously Flat.......2007-03-30

I am listening to this one on XM radio over the internet. The performance is well sung and the orchestra sounds great, with wide and expansive sound. Domingo sounds like, well, Domingo, but Waltraut Meier as Kundry sounds very nasal. The other men sound fine.

But somehow, there is no passion in this performance. It moves along at the same methodical rate from beginning to end, with no tension in the dramatic moments, and no mystery in the spiritual ones.

Perfectly fine, but perfectly ordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-08

I have to admit that I am pretty poor at writing reviews but was forced to by the simple lack of them for this recording. So please, don't expect a prose piece consisting of any deep or insightful analysis of this recording - such a thing is beyond someone who believes that music - especially Wagner's music - must be experienced and cannot be described in prose.

And so to the recording; simply this is an amazing interpretation of Parsifal and Thielemann is simply one of of Wagner's greatest interpreters. Heavy praise perhaps but I often feel while listening to his Wagner that this is how Furtwangler would have sounded given the recording mechanisms of the 21st century.

Parsifal is perhaps interpreted as Wagner's most directly "spiritual" works - infusing his interested in Christianity, Buddhism, the neopaganism of his time and - his version - of Schopenhauerian philosophy (this is Wagner after all and of course he felt that he could improve on Schopenhauer's thought. I often wonder what Schopenhauer's response would have been if Wagner had ever actually sent him the intended letter explaining how much he admired Schopenhauer's philosophy but that it could be improved if he only...?)and indeed, this is how the best Wagnerian interpretors perform it. However, the truth is that - in my opinion - it is normally T&S, as normally performed, that seems to project whatever feelings of "spiritually" or "transcendence" Wagner intended much more then Parsifal. However, here at last we have a Parsifal that manages to lift the listener to those heavy states that transcend the normal, everyday realm of existence.

This recording is incredible "cheap", for goodness sake, buy it and experience - honest Guv'.

5 out of 5 stars Radiant performance amid the clatter of stage noise.......2006-08-03

This new Parsial is a truly visionary performance by Christian Thielemann who never fails to amaze. His reading is both pointillist in his illumination of score's mosaic of tone colors and, at the same time, contrapuntally aware of the music's complex layers. The set's only drawback is the unusual amount of stage noise that not only has been allowed to exist, but has been weirdly amplified rather than digitally squelched. Perhaps DG's engineers wanted an "Amfortas Effect" by lancing this ethereal performance with a shaft of the palpably metallic. What are those sounds? (on-stage swords?, an hare Krishna procession? ). For Parsifal fans like me, who love to bathe in the grandeur of the bell-brass-timpani processions of Act I, the shock of hearing "kling soars," like so many pieces of fallen silverware, is irritating enough to retire the entire set on a first hearing. I've since gotten over this distraction, but it has taken time and patience. As to the singers, this set offers an unconventional package. Placido Domingo, in spite of his odd accent, is a heartfelt and satisfying Parsifal. Throughout the four hours, the other singers give a fresh perspective to the expected role casting. One never finds Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz tedious or terminally vatic. His varied and athletic voice has a light upper register and an affectingly rich lower one. Waltraud Meier's Kundry is also full of surprises. Unexpected tenderness, and, turning on a dime, hysteria. In all, one never thinks of this Parsifal as the sanctimonious German Easter Parade that one sometimes hears. Thielemann effectively revitalizes this work without sacrificing an ounce of it's rich beauty. Keep this set with your Knappertsbusch and your Boulez.

5 out of 5 stars Great conductor and star........2006-06-24

Beautiful, just like the same conductor's Tristan. Keep 'em coming DG. Want to hear Thielemann in Lohengrin, Tannhauser, the Dutchman etc. And I know it's expensive but some in the studio would be nice too.

Of course, if you know Portuguese, you take on this CD is presumably vastly different but this is a review from on the merits as a 'universal' CD when you don't know the language.

Just want to get something out of the way - As someone who has thousands of CD's and has hundreds of CD's in languages I don't know a word of - if the music and the vocals are universal and touch a chord, then the CD is great and worth everyone getting but this is not one of those CD's.

It is mostly quasi samba pop with some more straight pop songs but her vocals all sound the same except for one nice acoustic ballad. Her voice seems okay but unexpressive - the backing music is mostly non-descript and all sound pretty much the same - middling pop with dashes of samba to make it sound more authenthic. Of course, not knowing the language doesn't add anything to the enjoyment but as I said earlier, we can all probbaly name 50 Brazilian songs that are brilliant and a great majority of non Brazilian's listening have no idea what they are really singing about - but that doesn't detract from it.

That's not to say her other CD's might be better but this one is definitely not terribly interesting or exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2005-12-22

Daniela returns with and excellent album - instantly likeable - especially Levada Brasiliera and Topo Do Mundo - Excellent booklet with great photos of Daniela - For first time buyers of Ms. Mercury you will not be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Martinu concerto as it was meant to be.......2005-06-29

This disc fills a useful space in the catalogue, containing as it does the complete music for harpsichord by Bohuslav Martinu, plus as a filler one of the underappreciated masterpieces of the 20th Century, the harpsichord concerto of Manuel de Falla.

The Martinu concerto dates from the mid-1930s, and is a fine example of his neo-classical period. It is in the usual three movements, with two bouncy and rhythmically vivacious outer movements surrounding a touching slow movement. The well-judged instrumentation provides some particularly interesting touches--piano as part of the chamber orchestra accompaniment sounding alongside the soloistic harpsichord, for example.

Most previous recordings of this work have not followed Martinu's original intentions, and have used a full chamber orchestra instead of the nine instruments given in the score, with the result that the harpsichord is often drowned out by the orchestral sound. Not here--the solo instrument sounds out loud and clear, and the accompanying ensemble is very well articulated too. This, combined with the fine (and extremely idiomatic) playing from Monica Knoblochova and an ad hoc ensemble of some of her regular collaborators, makes this recording an easy recommendation in this work.

Just as fine is the performance of Martinu's delightful Promenades, four short pieces for violin, flute and harpsichord. These are amongst the most ingratiating of the composer's shorter works, melodically, rhythmically and colouristically inventive, and the performance here simply sparkles.

The solo harpsichord pieces are slightly less successful. The Two Pieces are studies for the concerto. Entertaining they may be, but they are also slight and unlikely to command repeat attention. More meaty is the 1958 harpsichord sonata. This eight-minute work (in three movements without a break) packs a lot of material into its short duration, but even a good performance like this can't quite hide the monochrome colours and the dutiful rather than inspired nature of the work. The two impromptus from 1959 are amongst the last works Martinu completed. They are short and well-constructed but again rather minor Martinu.

If the disc sags just a little with the solo pieces, it ends with a tour de force. Falla's harpsichord concerto will astonish anyone who thinks of him entirely as the author of Nights in the Gardens of Spain. This fascinating 15-minute work for harpsichord and five instruments is in a completely different world, one that might remind some listeners of Stravinsky and late Debussy, but which is distinctly its composer's own. Its mixture of austerity, rhythmic flexibility, quirky melodies and colourful instrumentation make for a wonderful and thought-provoking piece--and one really unlike anything else in the harpsichord repertoire.

With fine performances throughout and a well-written booklet (even if it perhaps has too many pictures of Ms Knoblochova in it), this disc is easy to recommend to anyone interested in the repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars The best highlight version overall.......2005-11-21

If you would like a perfect version of the Song to the Moon, and several selections from Rusalka, this is a great album to get. Gabriela Benackova has a very beautiful lyric soprano, and she sings this aria in such a straighforward, touching way, without any swooning and sentimental schlock. The supporting cast is quite good, especially Novak as Vodnik, and the orchestra is really great. Comparing this to the famous Mackeras version, the orchestras are equally good, with better sense of Dvorak's rhythm on this version, only Jezibaba is not as good, and Ochman as Prince does not compare to Heppner. I found Fleming's singing as Rusalka very disagreeable, she has a very pronounced tendency to scoop and many other mannerisms, and her Czech is terrible (this will not matter to many people, but it does to me) and she also overacts, so the choice for me is clearly Benackova. Her diction is perfect, and her singing on this album is simple and very beautiful, she is very emotionally engaged, and she fits my idea of perfect Rusalka. This is a great highlights disc at very reasonable price.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice recording - but still 2nd best.......2003-11-16

I own the complete recording from which this highlights album was made. Benackova in the title role and Richard Novak as her father are both a dream. And as another reviewer has said, the rhythms (esp. in the fabulous 'Hou hou hou' section) are really much bouncier in this version. The whole performance is obviously sung by people who are either native Czech speakers or close to it. This album of highlights is a great bargain. But don't buy the complete set. The tenor Ochman sounds like a real fuddy-duddy (for lack of a better word) rather than a prince; and the mezzo Soukupova's witch, while a great character portrayal, is sung with such a grating, steely voice that it has the effect of fingernails on a chalkboard -- both are MOST disappointing and mar what could have been a really great performance. While Renee Fleming's Czech might not be as good as a native speaker (how unfair to even say that!) her singing as well as all of the other singers on the London recording are simply in a higher class. And there are no weak links to be found. So unless you're a stickler for perfect Czech diction, go with the Fleming version if you're interested in a complete recording (I don't think they've made a highlights album out of it -- yet.)

5 out of 5 stars Much more alive version than any other.......2003-03-04

My mom's from the Czech Republic and bought this cd when we first got a cd player 10 years ago. It sat until last summer when I became interested in opera. I was in love with the highlights and bought the full length 3 disc set with Fleming. This one is much more alive and the percussion really drives hou hou hou and other songs. I understand everyone loves Fleming but the version of song to the moon is just as good here and the singer doesn't mess up pronounciation like Fleming does.

5 out of 5 stars High Energy Brasilian Dance Music.......2004-12-10

The frenetic pace of this CD is not for the faint of heart. I love all of the songs on here. I've never been able to see Daniela live, but I'd love to. Her raspy vocal delivery is what makes sets her apart from the rest. She proves that you can sing well and come out with danceable music. I also love that she is a songwriter. She is very proud of her heritage and that is so refreshing to hear in an artist. Her description of events, places she's been and where she is from is very lush and picturesque. If you know Spanish or Portuguese, Eléctrica would make for a more enjoyable audio experience. This is one of the best live albums that I own. Take Eléctrica home with you and you'll see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Bright, energetic and lively Baroque.......2007-06-08

I really enjoy the Capella Istropolitana. They have such a wonderful and bright sound. I find the works on this CD to be well played and the tempo selection for each movement very good. I listen to Baroque on my daily commute to and from work. I have a particular affinity for Italian Baroque, so I very much enjoy listening to the man who influenced so many other composers of the period. Great CD and an invaluable addition to your Italian Baroque collection.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 of Corelli Concerti Grossi, Op.6 as fine as Volume 1!!!.......2005-12-26

As I wrote in my review of Volume 1, Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 created a sensation when they were written, influenced composers like Handel in the composition of his Concerti Grossi, Op.6, and have won raves up until today.

The performances Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, nos. 7-12, by the Capella Istropolitana under conductor Krchek, are as fine as their performances of the first six Corelli Concerti Grossi. These performances, which are played on modern instruments, are the ones I personally prefer: They are incisively and beautifully played, follow performance practice, are very rich and warm sounding. Whether you opt for modern or period instruments is a matter of taste. (I own two recordings of period performances of the Corelli Opus 6 Concerti Grossi which are very fine: Pinnock/English Concert, and Goodman/Brandenburg Consort.) This is glorious, wonderfully affecting music I wouldn't want to be without. I choose to leave the modern versus authentic instrument debate to others.

5 out of 5 stars My high praise for Volume 1 applies here too!.......2005-11-29

My high praise for Volume 1 of Capella Istropolitana/Jaroslav Krechek of Corelli's Opus 6 Concerti grossi applies here, too.
For details, check out my review of Volume 1. I recommend interested listeners who like Corelli to get both volumes, as sound and playing are excellent.

You can't go wrong with this: highly recommended!

      5 out of 5 stars baroque beauty.......2004-03-21

This is seamless, glorious baroque music in a splendid performance; The melodies are lovely, and the way the instruments are combined is a thing of constant beauty. As it is stated in the liner notes, "The surviving compositions of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) are relatively few in number but disproportionately far-reaching in influence", proving once again that it is quality not quantity that matters, and his 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6, are some of the most exquisite pieces from that time period, and ones that were to inspire the music of future generations.

The Capella Istropolitana are musicians from the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, that started as a chamber group in 1983, and now have grown in size to perform and record the Mozart and Haydn symphonies, Vivaldi, Bach, and much more.
Jaroslav Krecek is an award-winning composer as well as conductor, and has led the Capella for many years.
Recorded in 1990, the sound is clear and crisp, and total playing time 65'45.

The plot is silly: two European sopranos (Konstanze and her maid Blonde) have been kidnapped by pirates and sold to a Middle-Eastern potentate, Pasha Selim, who puts them in his harem and then waits docilely for Konstanze to fall in love with him. A tenor (Pedrillo) has also been enslaved and put to work as a handyman. Belmonte, Konstanze's lover, comes on the scene, determined to rescue the captives; he and Pedrillo give the overseer Osmin (bass) drugged wine, begin to escape, and are captured and scheduled for execution when the Pasha decides to let them go. Two hours of ado about nothing, except that it gave Mozart the occasion to write some of the finest music of his early maturity. Georg Solti and his all-star musicians give a dazzling performances. --Joe McLellan

      5 out of 5 stars Bewitching!.......2006-04-26

Gruberova was past her, too early, prime when she recorded this Seraglio, but her experience carries her all the way through. She shows that experience best in the elaborate aria Martern aller Arten, but the beauty of her voice and her art are better displayed in the previous one, Welcher Wechsel herrscht in meiner Seele. Not wanting to go into too many details, I must simply say that the rest of the singers are quite well cast. Sir Georg Solti is backed up much better in Vienna than in London. All in all, it makes for a wonderful listening experience. One can be easily convinced that this is the most beautiful of Mozart's operas!

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2005-06-23

I have got to accept this is a very good version of Mozart's Singspiel.
I mostly hear Die Entführung for Osmin's parts. Talvela does a great job in this recording.
But here's my point... I just gave 4 stars to this recording because I've heard one a lot better.

In the version I have, Kurt Moll sings as Osmin. Peter Schreier as Pedrillo and Karl Böhm conducts. What else can I say....

      Talvela vs Moll

      Talvela sings acted.
Moll sings each note with precision.
Talvela often makes forte-pianos that are not written.
Moll sings all as it is written.
Moll gives the most dark and full low notes I've ever heard.

      Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely electric performance.......2004-08-09

Edita Gruberova is in my opinion the greatest coloratura of all time. Every high note is flawlessly formed and although the low notes are at times a little tired, everything else is flawless. Especially remarkable is Gruberova's effortless pianissimo high notes. She builds them from a tiny pin-prick of sound all the way to fortissimo and then back to pianissimo with complete ease. This recording is worth buying simply to hear Gruberova's performance. Kathleen Battle is delightful, but I think there is better out there. Her technique is lacking and at times some strain enters into the voice. The Belmonte while fabulous in my opinion can't live up to the recordings I've heard of Wunderlich singing the role. I especially dislike this Belmontes pianissimo treatment of the high A in O wie Angstlich. Wunderlich also has more freedom and brilliance in his voice. That said, this recording despite it's flaws is still deserving of the 5 star rating simply from Gruberova's performance.

5 out of 5 stars Gran version del Rapto.......2003-10-11

5 out of 5 stars Another complete opera blessed by Kathleen battle's keep........2003-08-20

Wow,this opera has some fabulous singing inside of it.The great german soprano Edita grubervova makes an appearence, and sings mighty well um...yes delicious.Sir Solti conducts this moving right along opera with what must have been the right swing in his arms.I found the music had me up & dusting around the house which is always a good thing.Last of all Kathleen Battle stole the show with an ear splitting High F above High C which would make Mariah Carey through a temper tandrum, indeed. To top off all the great pearls in this little cardboard boxset, let me tell you this is an european import rare to be found in any american stores my fellow music lovers.I'll tell you a little secret this set playing on my stereo was also an excellent way of me blocking out the sound of a rattling ceiling fan & the barking three legged dog living next door to me.What I'm trying to tell you is this music is great for setting the mood. The cover art is colorful to,it made me want to take drawing lessons again. This recording is digital and sounds first rate. There is a balance of space around the singers & with the music allows you to hear it all, like audiophiles like to hear instruments & voices.I think kAthleen Battles participation was the main cause of me ordering this set from amazon, but once I got it home & listened to it I found it joyish for other reasons too.All this lovely sound wrapped in a boxset, that's what makes life worth a twirl.
