Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

3 out of 5 stars Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15

It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose

5 out of 5 stars Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

4 out of 5 stars Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, fun CD-Rock and traditional tunes turned Latin.......2007-05-29

We love this CD and all of our guests who have heard it love it too. The latin version of Cold Play's "Clocks" seems like they should have recorded it that way from the start. You'll recognize all of the songs and enjoy the Spanish or rhymically-latin versions.

Album Description

A mixture of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz style come together on Latin Jazz, a lively collection of songs by masters of the genre.

The artists featured on Latin Jazz represent an honored cast of musicians ranging from early pioneers of the genre to those who have helped it remain a viable force for more than 60 years. Machito, a contemporary of Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington, was a pioneering bandleader who helped deepen the bond between Afro-Cuban music and American jazz. His classic track "Congo Mulence" opens the album and features fellow jazz legend Cannonball Adderley. Other legendary figures on the album include Tito Puente, whose mastery of the timbales combined with old-fashioned showmanship kept his music fresh and relevant over the years, and Eddie Palmieri, whose piano techniques put him in the same league as jazz legends Thelonious Monk and McCoy Tyner. He teams here with Brian Lynch on "Guajira Dubois," a game of musical tag between Palmieri's piano and Lynch's trumpet.

The driving rhythm behind most Latin jazz comes from its powerful percussion, and Latin Jazz showcases some of the finest in this field. Master conguero (congo player) Poncho Sanchez leads one of the most popular Latin jazz groups in the world. His seasoned ensemble contribute the cool energy of "El Sabroson", while Ray Barretto covers the classic "Summertime." Considered the "godfather of Latin jazz," Barretto was the first Latino to have a Latin hit on the American Billboard Charts.

Other luminaries on the album include Hilton Ruiz, a former child prodigy who appeared at Carnegie Hall at the age of 8, Chocolate Armenteros, the legendary Cuban trumpet player, and Manny Oquendo & Libre, who represent a multigenerational dynasty of Latin music. Icelandic double-bassist Tómas R. Einarsson, and New York icon Chico Alvarez round out the collection.

Sigo Siendo Yo (Still Being Me) is not only the title of Marc Anthony's new hits collection, it's also a reaffirmation of his status as one of Spanish-language music's preeminent voices. The stirring set is balanced with sweeping ballads ("Ahora Quien," "Se Esfuma Tu Amor") and Anthony's true forte--scorching salsa numbers ("Valio La Pena," Tu Amor Me Hace Bien"). Still, everything is vividly enhanced by Anthony's astonshing vocal range. The disc's two new songs are a toss up: "Lo Que No Di" is overblown, overwrought and ponderous. In other words, a likely theme song for some future telenovela. First single "Que Precio Tiene El Cielo" is much better, highlighted by a sweet, slowly building salsa rhythm. Some hits--"Dimelo," "Muy Dentro De Mi"--are equally familiar in their English-language versions but benefit from richer performances en espanol--usually the case with Anthony's material. Also included--perhaps as a sweet bit of foresight--is "No Me Ames," Anthony's 1999 duet with future wife Jennifer Lopez. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-04-01

A very good CD! Celos, Tu Amor Me Hace Bien and Que Precio Tiene El Cielo which is burning on the Radio in Boston is awesome, great musical Salsa arrangements on these songs...very intoxicating!

Lamento Jibaro...is a great sad Puerto Rican story with a nice old style musical arrangement which takes you back to the Island for those whom can relate and undertand the story behind the lyrics to this song.

A great CD for New Marc fans to endulge in his Spanish Music for starters.

I purchased this cd for my mother who is a HUGE Marc Anthony fan. This cd was okay but I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase another one. I was expecting so much more (new songs, etc.) from Marc. There were too many ballads and not enough salsa. He's had much better in the past.

There's plenty of food for thought in Putumayo's delicious new Afro-Latin Party. Like the previous Putumayo compilations Afro-Latino and From Congo to Cuba, the 10 tracks here document the fascinating musical marriage between Africa and Cuba that has seen the original African rhythms brought to Cuba by slaves evolve and migrate back east across the ocean to influence a new generation of African music (and in the process produce offspring everywhere from Croatia to Portland, Oregon). But that almost implies that the disc is of interest to musicologists only, when quite the opposite is true. Afro-Latin Party is anchored by three tracks from Africando, the Cuban supergroup that records with different African lead singers, and their seamless blend of African and Carribbean spices nicely sets the tone for the disc. With Pepe and the Bottle Blondes' wry take on classic cha-cha, "Cuentame Que Te Paso" (featuring a former lead singer for Pink Martini) rubbing shoulders with classic-style salsa from Croatia's Cubismo ("Morenita") and Puerto Rico's Jose Mangual Jr. (the white-hot "Ritmo Con Ache"), the disc is an excellent primer on the global reach of salsa music, but more importantly one that sounds best blasting out of speakers that aren't too far from the dance floor. --Ezra Gale

Album Description

Croatian salsa, Cuban ska, and Oregonian mambo!?!? These are three of the unlikely gems listeners will find on Afro-Latin Party. What started out as an effort to provide the perfect soundtrack to a Latin dance party became a tribute to the global appreciation and realization of the musical ricochet between Cuba and Africa.

Central to the Afro-Latin phenomenon is Africando, who provide three songs on Afro-Latin Party, each with a different African lead singer. In the 1960s and 1970s, the biggest names in African music—including such heavyweights as Youssou N'Dour and Salif Keita—were performing Latin music, thanks to recordings that came over from abroad. Cultural exchange between Cuba and the socialist governments in Mali and other parts of West Africa was a regular phenomenon. Performers like the Fania All Stars and Celia Cruz toured Africa and became musical icons.

In 1992, legendary Africando founders Ibrahim Sylla and Boncana Maïga traveled to New York to record with top local salsa musicians, many who were taken by surprise by these Africans performing and their phonetically learned Spanish lyrics. Interestingly, many of the band members on the three Africando tracks here, also play on other tracks on Afro-Latin Party.

4 out of 5 stars A musical history passport.......2007-06-27

It's a shame that the strong, native culture of African slaves was broken, beaten, dissolved, dissoluted when they arrived in the US. This is a CD that works both in and out of the classroom. The music is amazing, and it makes you want to take an historical tour.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-03-24

This CD is amazing! i cannot stop listening to it, and when i do, i just want to get up and DANCE! this truly a work of art, and if you don't have this cd go and get it, because you have no idea what you are missing

5 out of 5 stars Wear your dancing shoes!.......2005-05-25

The editorial reviews here explore the ethnomusicology of this disc, now let me share a gut reaction: wear your dancing shoes! This CD arrived in my mailbox on a dark winter day when I was engaged in the dreary task of cleaning my kitchen. By the third song sunlight seemed to have flooded the room, and I was dancing around with my scrub rag in hand! I guarantee it will transport you. This is my favorite new CD of the year.

Singer/songwriter Marc Anthony gets back to the basics here, rewarding his main fanbase by recording salsa versions of the Spanish-language pop ballads on his Amar sin Mentiras CD. Beyond "Lamento Borincano," the old folk-salsa standard by the legendary Puerto Rican songwriter Rafael Hernandez, there isn't anything new. The other seven tracks are simply horn-fueled and percussion heavy retakes. But even those who already have Amar can find new juice here. Valio La Pena vibrates with new sonic urgency as Anthony describes the risks sometimes necessary in finding romantic happiness. The pop version of "Ahora Quien" was dramatic and anthemic. Here, it's speeded up and filled out with melodic pianos and horns. Even "Escapemonos," the tepid duet with actress/singer Jennifer Lopez, gets a recharge in the salsa version thanks to percolating percussions. Anthony's strength is his strong, plaintive vocals. On ballads he's ok, but it's in fiery salsa tunes where the music and the vocals really complement each other. Did we really need two Anthony CDs? Probably not, but his hardcore salsa fans will appreciate the extra effort. --Ramiro Burr

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-03-28

One of the reasons I'm such a big fan of Marc Anthony is that he's able to sing with such feeling. With this CD he does it again. Valio la Pena is the kind of album you either want to dance to or sing. Or both. Marc and his band put their all into this album and the end result is a fantastic CD from el rey de salsa. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars HE'S BACK!.......2006-11-21

After acouple of questionables albums Marc Anthony the best modern day salsero is back and i cant be any happier as i live and die by this mans golden voice and unlike victor manuelle he can get away with this salsa/bolero style of salsa.Tu amor me haces bien being the best song of the album and the rest is just as good i gave it 4 stars b/c at the start of the album it was a smooth start but it got choppy by the end, the landing was rough but it was good enough to give it four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Just off 5 stars.......2006-07-31

Marc Anthony is excellent as always. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that I was disappointed to find out that the album contains "salsa" versions of the songs played on the radio such as Ahora Quien. The version I heard on the radio is more of a ballad style as is Tu Amor me Hace Bien. Since I prefer the slower versions there was a bit of a disappointment for me since I still have to buy the slower versions. Other than that I love the album.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as his 3 previous salsa albums.......2006-05-19

*** stars - can't change the above!

Valio is a rearrangement of some of the songs of Amar sin Mentiras. And it definitely has the feeling of an afterthought.

While it is a pretty decent salsa album (albeit brief), it is simply not in the class of his other three salsa CD's, Todo a su Tiempo, Contra la Corriente, and especially, Libre. The arrangements are standard competent rather than thorougly innovative and unique as were the older ones.

Cuban bassist, composer, and bandleader Israel "Cachao" Lopez embodies the history of modern Cuban music. In the late 1930s, he and his brother Orestes, a pianist and composer, reworked the old danzon and created the revolutionary mambo. By the time the world was catching up to it, 20 years later, he was on to another innovation, leading descargas, Latin jam sessions. He has anchored nearly every significant group in Latin music in the U.S. over the past 35 years, from Machito to Gloria Estefan. Master Sessions, released in 1994 and featuring a superb cast including reedman Paquito D'Rivera, percussionist Francisco Aguabella, flutist Nestor Torres, and timbalero Orestes Vilato, represented Cachao's long overdue rediscovery. The program includes danzones, decargas, rumbas, and even an Ernesto Lecuona piece. The music here is as down-home wise and deceptively simple as the man at the bottom of it. Musical lessons are rarely as rich and delightful. --Fernando Gonzalez

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Master's Piece.......2007-03-23

POWERFUL! ... TOP NOTCH ARRANGEMENTS! ... In this album, you get a truly masterful performance from Cachao and company. In this offering he is surrounded by a roster of talent that has only been equaled twice before in the very rich history of latin music. Those other recordings are as follows; 1. "Estrellas Areito vol. 1 - 4", Areito label and 2. Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nueyorquino vol. 1 - 2", Salsoul label. To say that it is the among the very best Cuban music EVER recorded is truly an understatement, from the opening track to the very last one, what one gets is Afro-cuban music played with a pure passion and love. It is obvious just by listening that the musicians in this album played with their hearts exposed. I was not present at the recording but i know that the head charts and arrangements were used only to begin each session. It is physically impossible to write and then have each member play the music contained in this recording. An improvisers paradise. It is very rare for musicians to find themselves in a setting where all of their emotions flow with electrically charged passion as with this album. As a collector of Cuban music, I have heard most of what has been recorded. This ranks among the very best of them all (...and there are 1000's of excellent records of Cuban music). If you are just discovering Cuban music, this is a perfect place to begin exploring. For those already baptized, GET THIS ONE!

5 out of 5 stars Essential latin music.......2005-02-26

This CD should be in the collection of every latin music lover. It should be a required study material for those who want to make salsa. No, it's not salsa but rather father mambo, mother guajirra, aunt descarga, and grandma rumba.
The musician lineup is spectacular including Jimmy Bosch(trombone) and Nestor Torres(flute). And all of these under the man who created mambo and descarga. Cachao masterfully utilizes the skills of these experts to redo some of his old songs, and perform new ones.
Unfortunately the complexities in the music can only be heard in a high end sound system, so don't buy this CD to listen to it while you drive to your favorite latin club, unless you own a Benz. Another detail that makes it different is that the songs flow for as long as they must rather than be rushed to the four minute industry standard.
For those who are only aquainted with modern latin music, expect the same instrumentation as Salsa, but with a more classical feel where vocals come second to the instruments. After listening to this CD you will be able to dissect most Salsa and further understand where it falls stylistically.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the very best cuban music ever.......2003-10-15

The quality of the sound and the magical expertise of some of the best musicians from Cuba come together in this album.
This is what we call "the real thing"... as real and as good as it can possibly be...
This is definitely a must have album for anyone, like me, who treasures the tropical music of the Caribbean and Latin America.
I also recommend the Volume II of the Master Sessions just as highly. These are some of the best collector's CD's money can buy...
If it was possible, I would give it six stars out of five!

5 out of 5 stars LATIN BEST OF THE BEST.......2003-08-05

this is my third copy bougth on this ALBUM and the music is still frech, like taken out of the island for the first time, even tought i have not been there, Cachao's music takes you there by the sounds and the rithm. i always gonna be a fan and continue to hear his music.

5 out of 5 stars a great Latin jazz album.......2002-02-19

First of all, I love the bass. Second of all, I love Latin music and Latin jazz. Well, that means that his album is one of my all time favorites -- it swings! Not only is every track great, the recording is very high quality and will highlight any audiophile system. I have scores of great Latin music, but this is one of the CDs I keep coming back to time after time. Israel Lopez is one of the world's greatest living bass players (his nickname is Cachao) -- I've been meaning to buy volume 2 as well which should be just as good. This one is a winner.

Standard French Caribbean music, all with a great beat! I play it in my high school French classes that I teach, and the teens love it too!

5 out of 5 stars One of Putumayo's Best.......2004-11-21

An easy-going mix of biguine, merengue-ish extremely enjoyable tunes that get your feet moving. Five of the songs (half the album!) are among my all-time French Caribbean faves, and there are no dogs. You can't help smiling during "Parfum des Isles, a good-natured instrumental. The live Kassav cut, OK but not one of their best, is the only true driving zouk on the cd. The rest are more laid-back, but rhythmically more interesting and appealing, with an almost Brazilian feel. The four of us at work all love this cd, and it has held up well after repeated listenings. We recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars A fine sampler of Franco-Caribbean musical styles.......2004-02-07

A nice, smooth set of modern pop songs drawn from the French-speaking islands of Guadeloupe, Haiti and Martinique, lingering on the more tuneful and diverse end of the Caribbean musical spectrum. For someone like myself, who quickly tired of the manic, monotonous landslide of "soca" and "zouk" records during the 1980s, this disc came as a pleasant surprise. It's very listenable and engaging, a nice selection for someone looking for some accessible, poppish world music.

3 out of 5 stars when is it classic and when is it stale?.......2007-04-05

I didn't enjoy this cd as much as I expected. Guess it's all in the ears of the reviewer. I had heard too much like it before and it wasn't strong enough as a classic to hold my interest.

5 out of 5 stars great compilation.......2006-11-08

this CD is a compilation of Tito Puente's music, mostly recorded in the 50's and early 60's. Every selection is a winner, and if you are just getting started listening to Tito Puente's music, this is a good jumping off point. However, please note: this is not a CD of strictly "mambo" or "salsa" music, there are other selections here that do not fit that category, although all of the tunes are Latin in flavor.

5 out of 5 stars Should be better known.......2006-06-16

I had the pleasure of attending a Tito Puente concert a few years before his death. The man loved what he was doing and his concert was full of joyous, dancable music. Salsa is more popular now than when Puente started his career so you would think that more people would be interested in his music. This is the type of cd to listen in the background or to just dance non stop. Too bad more people will not have the joy of listening to his live concerts.

5 out of 5 stars A great first Tito Puente album.......2004-04-10

Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.

Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.

Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.

A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.

A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King!

5 out of 5 stars Dos ritmos, una música.......2006-10-06

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection.......2006-08-24

Like others, I was skeptical when I heard about the idea, but this collection easily won me over. What I find so interesting is that the arrangements are so good, so creative, it's as though these well-known classical pieces were *written* as Cuban music. You find yourself completely accepting this genre-bending experiment.

Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".

4 out of 5 stars Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28

Crossover efforts are always risky ventures that dance precariously between creative and contrived. There is definitely some of the latter on this 2002 recording, but surprisingly, far more of the former as the fruitful teaming of three German classical-jazz musicians and a pair of Cuban percussionist/vocalists puts a hearty Latin-flavored spin on some very familiar classics. Two of the Klazz Brothers, pianist Tobias Forster and bassist Killian Forster, took a fortuitous trip to Cuba and concluded the popular classical pieces they usually played could easily be adapted to the Cuban- and Afro-Cuban Jazz styles.

The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.

However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.

4 out of 5 stars A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy/south-american music .......2005-07-28

A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy music which matches wonderfully in my collection. It is trully remarkable to discover the full classical music-education of these performers, which brings them to make this wonderful CD of high-standard music.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but need to try harder..........2005-03-27

I found this CD after watching "Collateral". The music sounds very interesting when classic melodies blended with swing and jazz. But they sticked to the originial notes too much. I wish they could have created more variations and improvisation. Also, in this "Classic Meets Cuba" CD, the Cuba part needs to be emphasized more (putting them into a central stage in some tracks; the solo in the Fur Elise track is a good example) rather than treating the percussion beats as peripheral background. Taking the advantage of these vivid beats could further set the musicians free from the original notes. Overall, this is a good CD and is perfect for smooth jazz lover. Hope they can try harder and do more in their up-coming new release-Jazz Meets Cuba.

Looking at the others reviews I sincerely think you were too much generous or you don't know the music of Tito. I bought this CD and I was desapointed for the lack of energy authenticity by the quality of the arrangements.
This is not a bad CD but the oldies are FAR BETTER.

4 out of 5 stars Fun dance collection.......2006-02-25

This collection is a lot of fun percussion with typical Latin mambo beats. It's got enough variety to keep you interested but it's still pretty easy listening. A fun addition to anyone's dance collection.

5 out of 5 stars El Rey Del Timbales.......2005-08-24

The name fitted him perfectly. No one has ever and will ever record music the way he did. His style was one of a kind. Many may copy him, but they will never match him. This album is truly wonderful. Latin jazz is wrapped up with him. He makes you want to just get up and dance!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Tito Puente CDs available.......2001-05-17

This is easily one of the best Tito Puente CDs availabe. A compilation of some of Tito's best songs, these versions inspire awe and intense dancing. In addition, the notes by Joe Conzo succinctly detail Puente's life from the beginning of his musical career (or at least by the time Tito was 13 ... ), Tito's influences, playing with Machito, to the Navy in WWII, to the Palladium era and beyond.

Even just the mention of the infamous and influential Palladium establishes the authenticity of the biography, the music and the album. Within the New York Mambo scene, abundant reference is still made to the Palladium, both to the music and the dancing (which cannot exist without each other). Conzo notes that "Ran Kan Kan" was first recorded in 1949 -- a fact that many of the people 'in the know' today are not familiar with.

This CD is so good that for a while, it was the first thing I wanted to hear in the morning and the last music I wanted to hear at night. Don't miss this one!

Thanks go first and foremost to the creators and second to those who chronicle the music, the musicians and the culture. The growth in this art achieved by the next generation will only be possible because they learned from you.
