There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Decent book for students.......2007-06-18

If you're expecting a "how-to" manual on writing distributed systems, this isn't it. It has an excellent coverage of some fundamental principles - I used it as a text book for a distributed systems course and found it very useful. The course and this book changed the way I think about system architecture. Some readers may find the material dry - it is, but in the end it's rewarding. It helps to have an exam at the end to drive you through this book. To the reviewer who said that it doesn't mention what's wrong with distributed objects or NFS, you'll find that it gives you the tools to see past the glossy hype of whatever the latest fad is (distributed objects, web services, or whatever else) and ask serious questions about how it handles failure, security, replication, etc.

Having said that, there were glaring grammatical errors, especially towards the end (the chapter on Distributed File Systems). I am surprised that it got past the editors. Also I had to re read some sections several times before I understood them (like the part about reliable group communication). It's still better than going through individual papers, but a more readable revised edition wouldn't hurt.

Good theorical book.......2007-03-17

If you buy this book expecting to learn how to do some web, rmi, corba or any other kind of distributed systems development then don't buy this one. This book is now a good source of theorical material, I'm currently using this book because of the theorical material but often I have to complement the information with other books like "Distributed Systems: Concepts and Design (4th Edition)" (by: Coulouris) which has more indepth RMI practices and is also a good information source.

Not worth to read.......2006-12-25

I hope to choose 0 star if I could. I agree with one of the reviewer said the book loses it's focus. For example, the way it introduces Java RMI is very disappointed: it neither clearly described the idea very well nor the implementation. Therefore you end up learning nothing. You would say this is a academic textbook but in contrast, the Silberschatz's classic "Operating System concept" does the RMI introduction pretty well.

Horribly written.......2006-12-09

I enjoyed and learned a lot from both of Tanenbaum's OS textbooks, but this is really awful. On the one hand, the descriptions of things such as RPC are so abstract that I can't see how anyone could be expected to understand what a real RPC system would look like; on the other hand, there's not nearly enough effort made to give a picture of how the systems discussed fit into the broader context of computer science, or relate to each other.

Moreover, the book is badly written: the writing is alternately overly colloquial and overly academic in style, as if it were written by someone very smart, but for whom English is a second language.

too many junks in the book.......2006-09-27

I have to say it's a book full of junks and gaudy texts. The author wants to cover all the topics in this field but he ignores the readability as a scientific reader. Most of the time you may find all the texts are lack of focus.

The number of instructional theories and camps of instructional theorists are growing at a rapid rate. Camps of constructivists face off against camps of reductionists and the debate rages on. Unlike many other scientific communities, educators and instructional theorists seem to spend as much energy tearing down the past as they do in inventing the future.

Charles Reigeluth has taken a very different approach to instructional theory. He has gathered together many of the best minds in instruction and assembled their writings into a second volume of instructional theory and practice. In this volume, he allows the various authors to present twenty-one different instructional theories. As editor, Dr. Reigeluth and others cross-reference these various theories and practices to create a discussion of similarities. Rather than take a position that one camp or another is right or wrong, each is allowed to make a case for the work they are doing. Each is given space to offer examples of process and results. If you are looking for a clear picture of the profession of instruction in 1999, then you need look no further than this volume. You will not find exhaustive descriptions of each theory or complete descriptions of all the associated research. This book is more of a summary of all the important work in the profession with extensive references to the larger body of work.
The message from Reigeluth is clear. Instructional professionals need to spend more energy looking for solutions and less energy on carving out individual positions. The focus should be on results because results ultimately determine what works. This work builds on the original volume of instructional theories published in 1983, and there is an indication from Reigeluth that a third volume is now in the works. This is must reading for anyone who wants to take the pulse of the profession.

A classic!.......2001-09-30

Charles is my Ph.D. dissertation advisor and my mentor so I knew that he put in a lot of efforts on putting this book together. Please pay attention to the last chapter: formative research methodology. Not only for us researchers or professors in universities to get more insight about instructional design, theories and models, but I know a lot of corporate trainers are also using this book as "bible" to guide their daily design work. A very good book (green book vol. 2), highly recommended.

A basic for any ID book collection.......2001-08-05

Reigeluths first volume of Instructional Design Theories and Models was published 16 years ago and quickly became "the bible for the development of many instructional designers in the years that followed" (p. 1). In this second volume, Reigeluth has assembled more than a survey of instructional design and learning theories. He sought to reflect the great diversity and changes in thinking since his first volume in 1983. He reasoned logically that the original book formed a picture of the topic in that time period and now it was time to assemble a new snapshot. Taken together, volumes I and II fully illustrate the roots and development of instructional design theories in the U.S. from the 1970s to today.

Volume two is organized into five units. An introductory unit and a reflective unit surround the three units that form the core of the book. These three units present instructional design theories grouped around cognitive, psychomotor and affective development themes. While the topics are divided, the overarching theme of the book is a systems approach to learning-- everything is related.

The introductory unit offers two papers presenting perspectives on the theories and changes that have occurred since the first volume. Reigeluth (1999) begins the unit by defining the terminology of design and theory. He works to establish the framework within which the reader can "analyze and understand the instructional-design theories presented in this book" (p.5).

Thirty-eight authors present twenty-three papers in the three units that form the core of this book-- the descriptions and reports on the state of learning and instructional design theory. Reigeluth organizes each unit purposefully. He explains the selected content and his thinking about their organization by briefly introducing each unit. Each paper is authored by a recognized authority on that topic: Jonassen on constructivist learning environments; Hanaffin on open learning environments; and Gardner on multiple approaches to learning, for instance. Romiszowski presents the single paper that comprises the second unit, psychomotor development.

The only comment that might be taken as a mild negative suggests that while there are many discussions of changing paradigms, the reader is left without a sense of one direction in which to develop instruction. This is more a reflection of our times than the quality or organization of the text. Thirty years ago there were fewer theories and more consensus than is evident today. Reiguluth has been fair to present the multiple points of view, even when they do not intersect to form one dominant theory by which to gauge the work of instructional design.

The author, Charles M. Reigeluth has been a Professor of Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University since 1988. According to Reigeluth, his "research interests include redesigning educational systems and designing high quality learning resources" (Reigeluth, 2001, p. 2). An avid writer, his publications include eight books; two have received "Outstanding Book of the Year Awards" from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

Great book, heavy reading!.......2007-05-15

If you want to know a comprehensive overview of the history of mission it is a great book. The only thing I didn't like were the endless references noted in the body of the text, it was too distracting for me.

An in-depth, scholarly analysis of missionary paradigms.......2002-12-07

Transforming Mission is a scholarly, in-depth study of major missionary paradigms from the first century until the present. Bosch's point of departure is that the Christian faith is "intrinsically missionary." He distinguishes between the missio Dei - God's own involvement in the world, and Missions - the church's missionary activity. He believes that to carry out God's mission the church can neither focus its activity exclusively on saving souls nor on this-worldly human progress -it must do both.
He first surveys the New Testament model of mission, claiming that the advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked a significant change in the concept of mission as understood in the Old Testament. Jesus' ministry was characterized by inclusiveness and breaking down barriers between people. His goal was directed toward all Israel rather than only the remnant of the faithful. Bosch makes the point that one of the most well-known missionary texts, the Great Commission, cannot be divorced from the rest of Matthew's gospel. He believes that Matthew envisions a mission to both Jews and Gentiles and that this mission is characterized by discipleship and a call to challenge social injustice. Luke's understanding of mission highlights repentance and forgiveness of sins as well as economic justice and peace-making. Paul's understanding of mission focuses on the church as an eschatalogical community which is works for the improvement of society while awaiting the ultimate renewal of all things with the parousia.
In the second part of his analysis Bosch draws upon the work of Hans Kung and Thomas Kuhn. Kung identified six periods within the entire scope of Christian history during which a particular paradigm was prevalent: 1) The apocalyptic paradigm of primitive Christianity, 2) The Hellenistic paradigm of the patristic period, 3) The medieval Roman Catholic paradigm, 4) The Protestant Reformation paradigm, 5) The modern Enlightenment paradigm, and 6) The emerging ecumenical paradigm. Bosch makes a theological application of Thomas Kuhn's theory of scientific paradigm shifts, claiming that the six historical periods in the history of the church were each characterized by a particular theological paradigm. He points out that theological paradigms, unlike their scientific counterparts, do not make a complete break with old ideas. Sometimes elements from older paradigms are incorporated into new ones. Old and new paradigms can often exist simultateously among different groups of believers. Occasionally an old paradigm is rediscovered by a later generation.
At the conclusion of his survey of historical paradigms, Bosch emphasizes that mission is ultimately multidimensional. The contours of these many dimensions are shaped by six major "salvific events" chronicled in the New Testament: Christ's incarnation, by which he fully experienced the challenges and struggles of being human; his crucifixion, which signifies the completeness of his service and self-sacrifice; the resurrection, which conveys a message of victory and hope for humanity; the ascension, which calls Christians to work for a new order here on the earth which issues from above; Pentecost, which inaugurated the era of the church as a distinct community where social renewal is made manifest; and the parousia, which sets the sights of the church on the imminent and full realization of God's reign.
The depth and comprehensiveness of Bosch's work make it an important resource for any serious student of Christian missions. His many years of service on the field as a missionary coupled with his extensive theological training have given him many valuable insights into his subject matter.

A penetrating study of the paradigm shifts of missions........1999-04-04

Transforming missions is a scholarly work of importance for all scientists occupied with cross cultural encounters and matters of religion. The author, David Bosch, is one of several missologists who willingly share his rich and well documented work with other disciplines.

The book is well researched and the author is able to communicate complicated theological matters in a most convincing way. The book is readable and accessible to a long range of intrested persons and not merely to experts or specialists.

From a scholarly point of view Bosch provides the researcher with an analysis that gives a good framework for further research on the matter of missiology and historical cross cultural encounters. However, I miss references and analysis that can be more easily related to central social science authors like Giddens and Habermas and modern philosophers of care and interpersonal relationships.

I also miss a more penetrating discussion of the Eastern Orthodox churches and the paradigm shift in their missiological thinking.

This book differs from others on Chaos Theory in that it focuses on its applications for understanding complex phenomena. The emphasis is on the interpretation of the equations rather than on the details of the mathematical derivations. The presentation is interdisciplinary in its approach to real-life problems: it integrates nonlinear dynamics, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, information theory, and fractal geometry. An effort has been made to present the material ina reader-friendly manner, and examples are chosen from real life situations. Recent findings on the diagnostics and control of chaos are presented, and suggestions are made for setting up a simple laboratory. Included is a list of topics for further discussion that may serve not only for personal practice or homework, but also as themes for theses, dissertations, and research proposals.

Soft but scientific introduction to chaos theory.......2001-04-20

This is more like a historical perspective of the development of the concepts of chaos theory than a deep coverage of chaos theory. Emphasis is on introducing the concepts for allowing interested people to get into advanced theoretical developments (and practical too). However there are some scientific prerequisites (physics, dynamical systems...).

Writing is very good, intuitive, does not assume any particular mathematical background or practice with tools for simulating chaotic systems. Exposition is rather short because of a scientific writing style, it's not about scientific popularization (don't feel this is pedantic, writing is concise and not meant to be crowded with examples). In its approach, i think it's the smoothest scientific introductory book on the subject. For example Schroeder's (Fractals chaos and power laws) is overly mathematical as an introduction. Williams' (chaos theory tamed) on the other hand has a similar approach to this one but it is longer, more general and with less emphasis on the applied side of chaos theory (the analytic side). From an economical point of view, William's is cheaper while covers more about chaos theory, but this volume is scientifically better and more useful than Williams', which is too "generalistic".

In summary : a very good self-contained and short introduction to chaos theory. But for a first book on chaos theory go to Williams, it's easier to read.

The book has some fine features. But it doesn't explain anything. So, if you already know about chaos and want to read a brief review then probably it is ok (but read ahead). If you don't know about chaos you'll get lost.

The book is too expensive for what it offers!!.

Cogently Written.......2000-03-09

Not a bad survey. Well written and easy enough for any layman to understand. This is a survey that puts the author's uniqique synthesis of some rather broad and difficult fields into words and he does a good job of it. After reading this book you will not only have a good handle on what chaos is or isn't but how it has emerged from seemingly dipsarate fields of science.

This book engages ten of the more important missiological questions of our time. It is provocative because it goes against the grain of much contemporary thinking; and stimulating because it prompts to reader to clarify his or her own thoughts on the issues surfaced. Ultimately the book is frustrating because Hesselgrave, while purporting to present an objective duscussion, works from within a unbiblially narrow and freqently outdated frame, which the reader discerns early on,and thus invariably comes to predictable conclusions. Readers comfortable with a dispensationist hermeneutic will appreciate the book more than others.
