4 out of 5 stars Take what you want... .......2007-06-12

Whether you love or hate big companies like Starbucks put it aside! Any business owner or worker providing service to clients (ie: most of us) can learn something from this book. The simple principal identified in this book as "surprise and delight" is so lacking in most businesses who leave us every day without any reason to talk about them. Loved the idea about the coffee cup on taxi advertising - I would have bought the book just for that idea alone! PS - I don't drink coffee, nor is there a Starbucks in my town, but I believe you can learn from any business!

3 out of 5 stars Not a premium blend!.......2007-06-08

To be honest, I'm an absolute Starbucks fiend. Depending on my mood, I either order a grande-chocolate-cream-frap-w/whip cream & chocolate-syrup or a grande-house-coffee filled three-quarters full w/a tad of water. I own stock and it's the only coffee I drink at home. I picked up the book expecting to find the same experience on the page that I commonly find in the stores. I was however, a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the principles (be welcoming, considerate, involved etc) and the barista's (better known as cashier's) stories. And while none of the great stories chronicled in the book have ever happened to me, I think it's quite possible; given the upbeat attitude one generally enjoys at any of the stores, that the barista's working for Starbucks would go the extra mile. I also appreciate that Starbucks attempts to make more than a financial impact on the world, it's corporate partners and programs like C.A.R.E. But the book reads a bit too rah rah to be fair and/or balanced. Throughout the book the author, Joesph Michelli, tells us how sensitive the staff (both corporate and local) is to constuctive customer criticism; yet, he fails to deliver any evidence of company mistakes or wrongdoing, which I find hard to believe given the cut-throat arena of big business. On a personal note, I hate the term 'constructive criticism.' As far as I'm concerned, criticism is criticism and none of us like criticism very much. But I think it's essential to personal and professional growth and improvement. Nonetheless, fair apprasials of successful companies should strike a proper balance between positive and negative criticism and unfortunately the 'Starbucks Experience' falls short in that category. The second half of the book is also a bit redundant. I don't want to slam the effort because the book reads fairly fast and I learned alot about the stores, which further cemented my addiction with their coffee and "third place" experiment. But I would've liked to have heard some disgruntled Starbucks customer stories to properly temper my enthusiasm for the store and it's concepts. In the end, the overall effort gets a marginal thumbs up, but, in the spirit of the Starbucks principles; namely, being considerate, I recommend checking it out at your local library before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars How To Succeed the Starbucks Way.......2007-06-01

I received THE STARBUCKS EXPERIENCE as a gift. Since I'm not in the business world by profession, I assume it was given to me because I am a loyal Starbucks customer. Venti Hot Chocolate (sometimes referred to as cocoa) is my usual beverage. I frequent about three different Starbucks and after two visits, the baristas know my drink before I order it. While I have discovered not all Starbucks are created equally, usually the service is good, the employees friendly, the atmosphere comfortable, and the beverage is how I'd like it or pretty close to it. Since Starbucks is still growing and most of the shops seem to be thriving, Starbucks has to be doing something right, and if you're curious as to what it might be, chances are you'll find the answers in this rather interesting volume.

Author Joseph Michelli is a motivational speaker for businesses and believes that the success of Starbucks can serve as inspiration for other businesses. He discusses the phenomenal growth of the company and how a successful business can grow from using a product people enjoy but take for granted, turn the use of the product into a pleasant experience, and get results, which is essentially the secret to Starbucks' many achievements in the world of business.

Michelli believes that Starbucks is guided buy five principles that make the business successful:
1. Make it your own: all people in the organization feel a true sense of ownership and believe that they have a stake in the success of the company.
2. Everything matters: What goes on behind the counter is just as important as what customers see. Cleanliness, atmosphere, a desired product, customer service, are all important and no detail should ever be overlooked.
3. Surprise and delight: Using as an example the success of Crackerjacks as a snack that people enjoyed that also caught them by surprise when first introduced, Starbucks tries to have new and innovative ways to attract new customers and keep committed customers interested so that the business never becomes static.
4. Embrace resistance: Starbucks, unlike many businesses, does not rely on good public relations to be rid of problems and criticisms. Instead, Starbucks tries to engage in discussions with its dissenters to convince where it's necessary and change when change is what is necessary. Michelli uses Fair Trade policies as a case in point as to how Starbucks has been criticized and how it has responded using this principle.
5. Leave your mark: Making money may be a goal of any business, but businesses also have a responsibility to contribute to the greater good. Starbucks does this through financial transparency, involvement in the community, a commitment to making sure that its suppliers are justly paid, and delivering a quality product.

Though Michelli's admiration of Starbucks could lead readers to believe he was hired by Starbucks as a public relations person, writing in the superlative may be a byproduct of his motivational talks. He presents a book that seems to be sound for businesses, but as someone involved in the non-profit world, namely a church, I can see how these principles would work for charities, churches, schools, social service agencies, and other nonprofit organizations. The book promotes excellence in a caring, committed, and purposeful way which can change the way corporations can do business and can help nonprofits remain innovative and relative too.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Juan Valdez.......2007-05-12

Wonderful insight into Starbucks, and the way to really look at starting a business. Best read with a cup of Starbucks in your hand.

1 out of 5 stars Corporate propaganda.......2007-04-27

Michelli is a very articulate commissar. He is the quintessential corporate propagandist. As he and Starbucks would say, if you're a Starbucks barista you're a "partner," a word used to emphasize the supposed "voluntary" choice of working at starbucks (downplaying the coerced set of choices available in the capitalist economy --work for a boss or starve--, the class conflict/exploitation and the undemocratic nature of Starbucks and corporations in general). It's true that by the abysmal standards of the service sector, Starbucks' benefits are slightly better than other corporations, but that isn't saying much.
Starbucks pays a poverty wage and maintains a 100% part-time cafe workforce. Starbucks boasts that it provides health insurance for part time workers even though it insures a lower percentage of its workforce than Wal-Mart. Fortune, a pro-management mouthpiece, says Starbucks is the 16th best company to work for in the United States based on a pseudo-scientific study done by a consulting firm which sells consulting services to some of the companies it ranks. Many workers complain about erratic hours and low pay. Starbucks has been cited by the National Labor Relations Board for union-busting on multiple occassions. The National Labor Relations Board recently alleged the company intimidated, threatened, and terminated workers who joined the activist IWW union.
Furthermore, corporations, apart from being totally undemocratic institutions, have a legal obligation to maximize profit for the stockholders; they are psychopathic institutions and cannot grant benefits to employers out of generosity-- they only do it like a hypocrite, if it benefits their public image (or if they are forced to do so by a union or government, of course)

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Step-by-Step Selling Guide.......2007-06-25

I speak around the world on lead generation and marketing strategy. Neil did an outstanding job crafting "The SPIN Selling Fieldbook" to give you a roadmap on how to master complex sales strategy.

There is no other resource I can think of where you can "easily perfect" your approach and positioning sales strategy.

Neil gives you step-by-step plan that anyone can follow in their quest to excel at marketing their products or services.

The SPIN Selling Fieldbook gives you valuable "hands on" tools. I recommend the "SPIN Selling Fieldbook."

It is an invaluable resource that any salesperson or sales executive should have in their personal library.

Joe Heller, Trust Cycle Selling

5 out of 5 stars Better than the standard Spin Selling Book.......2007-06-09

This field book is better than the original book was. If you are going to buy just one of the two you should probably just buy the field book. It allows you to apply the ideas very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Practice makes perfect........2006-11-14

Usually is not enough to read a book to have the knowledge, you need to practice, and that is what this book helps to, giving you ideas on how to put SPIN method into practice.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but too easy after reading SPIN Selling.......2006-08-09

I bought this book together with SPIN Selling. I read the Fieldbook after reading SPIN Selling. If you've already read SPIN Selling, this book is not going to tell you much new things.

If you would read the Fieldbook instead of SPIN Selling, then I think the Fieldbook is not thorough enough, at least if you compare it to SPIN Selling.

In general I think the audience of this book is perhaps college students, or clever highschool students, but not really experienced salespeople. Maybe that's also because of the cartoons every now and then which make the book look like it's meant for younger people.

What I expected when I bought both books was that the Fieldbook offerd some transcriptions of salescalls, and an explanation of why certain aspects are wrong and how this could be improved using SPIN Selling. This was not really the case, it was more like a simple summary of SPIN Selling. So not really the Fieldbook I expected.

Anyway, the book is not bad, but I would not recommend to buy both SPIN Selling and the Fieldbook together. Also, if you're a serious and experienced salesperson I would recommend SPIN Selling. If you're new to sales or if you're still in college, I would recommend the Fieldbook.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable part of the salesman's library.......2006-07-19

This book is a practical guide for implementing the principles learned in the original book about 'Spin selling', however it is not necessary to have read the other book to make good use of this one. I think the SPIN methodology is a most valuable contribution from Mr. Rackham to the field of large sales and this book gives sound help to implement it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Catherine Harris - Great Book.......2004-09-13

The author does a great job at providing the information necessary for Teleocommunications Management. I'm a manager with SBC a large telco in St. Louis. The only item I see missing from this book as with other books is the importanace of the ability to manage management. As a telecom manager, I'm not very good at managing people or admitedly have much knowledge of telecom, but I'm great at managing my management which has allowed me to progress. This book needs to not only reflect the managerial concepts of technology, but of salesmanship and the real world scenerios I run into every day. I do however feel this is a great reference for general telecommunications information and would recommend people read it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book of enterprise telecommunication system design.......2001-08-30

I think the book covers a complete discussion of every telecommunication facility development topic. The book starts from basic issues, such as selecting equipments and using them, to the cost analysis of develop the system. This makes the book comfortable for telco manager who never did business telecommunication system development before. I think this book is perfect for every telco manager. This book is, I think, also suitable for engineers and technicians to open and broaden the cost analysis of systems developed. I think the author is an expert in enterprise telecommunication system design and knows what he is doing.

Es un libro excelente, me parece muy bueno el contenido, sin embargo lamento decirles que llego un poco maltratado, por lo que en lo subsecuente espero pongan mas cuidado en este aspecto

4 out of 5 stars It's all in the first 25 pages!.......2007-01-14

I was very excited when I came across this particular book. This was exactly the right book - looking at the title - coming at the right moment for me. I could use it to help me work through a current problem!

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I dived into it with a passion. The introduction was insightful and right on target. This is terrific! Chapter 1; Surviving the Customer Revolution, was as good a review of this topic as I've read anywhere. It succeeded in defining what a customer centric organisation could look like and brought some real clarity to this part of the puzzle. If you've ever tried to explain the difference between a traditional product centric company and a customer centric one then you'll know what I mean.

Chapter 2 though, How Much Is Enough, was the beginning of the decline. The author attempts to define different levels of customer centricity necessary for your company and, for me, falls foul of too much detail and too much process - clearly reflective of the authors' obvious expertise and familiarity with organisational design. From there on it continued to be a struggle for me. The case studies were terrific and there was some real insight, but the solutions were too formulaic and linear to be of real value.

I came away from the book concerned that I'd missed something. I thought that customers would drive what level of customisation would be required in order to deliver value, and thereby improve business performance. Perhaps I was wrong!

Was I disappointed? Not at all. Worth reading even if the best is right up front!

5 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE, IN-DEPTH, THOUGHTFUL BOOK!.......2006-01-16

In contrast to product-centric, a customer-centric firm must be organized around the customer. This means going further than "customer focused" initiatives. This comprehensive, in-depth and thoughtful book begins by exploring the structures and philosophy involved in being customer-centric. Galbraith then details the different types of customer relationship strategies, following which he offers a guide to determining the level of customer-centricity (three levels are proposed) that would best serve the reader's company. The specific elements for achieving each of the three levels, from lightest to most intensive, are presented, along with guidelines for implementing actions ("solution strategy") required. Solution strategies vary by scale and scope, depending on the intensity of customer-centricity needed.

In all, the book delves into ways that organizations can design their strategy, structure, and processes to strengthen their position in the market and grow. Technology, with emphasis on its implementation and connectivity with customers, gets major attention. Much of the book presents engrossing cases (IBM, Proctor & Gamble, Nokia), which are extremely informative and provide a plethora of insights. This is an outstanding work in its content, organization of material, and style of writing. Very highly recommended.

    I love this book. Every teacher should have one. College education teacher aught to use it for their student teachers, too. The reading is easy and the tips are quick and to the point. This is a very user friendly book. Buy it!

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!.......2006-06-21

    This is a great book for beginning teachers with little to no experience in the classroom. It gives you many ideas to push you in the right direction.

    As a teacher who is going into my 5th year of teaching I was looking for something a little more in depth. I know my weaknesses and was familier with everything Mr. Bianco suggested. There were no real Ah ha moments while reading this book--I've heard it all before really. He gives you the basics, but if you are having specific issues beyond that, he just doesn't delve much deeper. I also found several things that were contradictory. He talks on one hand about making the punishment fit the crime, but on another page there are "disclipine cards" where a student randomly picks his punishment--like dusting the classroom!!! Very weird.

    I will end this by saying that I do think this is a great book for beginning teachers, but having been in the classroom for several years, it didn't teach me anything I didn't already know!

    5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2004-10-24

    One-Minute Discipline is one of my all-time favorite books on teaching, and I've read a lot of books about teaching! It is about so much more than discipline. The section on "teaching philosophy" is profound. There are fantastic support ideas, lists, tips, techniques, forms, surveys and quotes on discipline, motivation (both student and teacher)and teaching.

    My favorite thing is that nothing is taken for granted. Bianco discusses the most fundamental aspects of "basic teacher behavior" - everything from developing the "laser stare" to the "I mean business face" to "voice control" (the teacher's voice volume, though he says plenty about student voice volume too).

    I took notes on the whole book and came away with a plethora of creative ideas - alternative ways for students to ask for teacher assistance (written note, desk token, etc.); multiple problem-student behavior contract forms; great ideas on dealing with a variety of hostile situations (parents, student fights, etc.); and great reward ideas.

    Bianco obviously has total respect for students of all types, and his approaches are eminently positive; in fact he provides a variety of methods for monitoring that your teacher behavior is positive. However the book is about staying in control, conserving your energy for the long haul, and keeping your motivation and enthusiasm high.

    The book is also so easy-to-read, with so many visuals, that it's almost like reading a comic book. I put stickies throughout the whole book, and come back and leaf through it whenever I need inspiration or strategies to solve a knotty problem.

      If you're a startup or an entrepreneur...you have very little time and/or few sources of quality information.

      This book gives you the big picture, it also gives you many details that are hard to get...it's the best investment you can make with your time.

      5 out of 5 stars Reads like a great novel for the Entrepreneur.......2006-10-05

      If you are like me, you read a lot of books to help you become a better Entrepreneur, looking for those tasty morsels that give you ideas or methods to succeed in growing your business.

      This books is one of the few of its kind that I could not put down. Each section was interesting and most were relevant. I am sick of reading about pure high tech and software only plays. This book is not only very educational, it is a reference manual that never leaves my desk. The Database of funding sources is invaluable.

      Whether you are a start-up, growing a business or just interested in business reading, Kenneth H.Marks provides a clear insight into topics and issues required by any business person. Thought I understood finance until I read this book and located gaping holes in my understanding. Would recommend this book for any business course- it fills in the knowledge gaps that business schools leave.

      5 out of 5 stars This handbook should be on every entrepreneur's bookshelf.......2005-10-19

      This book is truly incredible! As the co-owner of a full service commercial finance intermediary firm, we are always looking for valuable and concise resources to draw upon for in-depth information regarding the very vast world of corporate finance. This book is it. It doesn't matter if you are an entrepreneur, student, or financial professional, this book covers every aspect of corporate financing options. I have used the "Financing Source Directory" numerous times to locate finance companies based on area of expertise and required funding. Our job as financial intermediaries is to not only educate our clients based on the best source of financing according to their respective needs but to also have a vast database of finance professionals to call upon in order to successfully facilitate our clients funding requirements. The "Financing Source Directory" and the material in this book provide just that and more. The investment price for the book is worth the directory alone. If you're trying to locate funds for your company or if you would like to have a better understanding of how to finance a growing organization, go buy this book.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Read, worth the price.......2005-09-15

      Yes, this is an excellent book that all entrepreneurs should read. It sets forth the basics for financing early stage and growth oriented firms. The data base alone is worth the price of the book.
      I do believe that more space should be dedicated to possible exit strategies. This book still gives a glimmer of hope for an IPO. A more practical examination of practical exits is warranted.
      Several years ago almost all of my clients were seeking the IPO as an exit. I still occasionally get a start-up client seeking an IPO, but that is rare. And, they quickly learn how difficult the process is and how unlikely the odds are.
      Additionally, in my opinion, it does not give justice to the difficulty of even finding start-up capital. Too many VCs are busy bailing out prior investments to fund new ventures. Of course, this will change over time, hopefully. A requirement for revenue growth and profits is moving some VCs into the mezzanine area instead of venture funding.
      I would highly recommend this book for either an entrepreneur considering a new venture or for an established business owner requiring growth oriented funding.

      This Handbook is a valuable, broad scope look at public and private sector systems currently engaged in change iniatitives around the world. Relatively free of jargon and untried theories, these field-tested case studies will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers from organization leaders and HR professionals to business school students. I came away with some important new ideas for my work and avoided a few pitfalls after reading the book.

      5 out of 5 stars An excellent combination of practice, theory and new ideas.......2007-02-03

      Through the many cases presented, Barbara and Billie were able to present to the reader how the different Large Group Methods actually can be applied, and, specially, how they form part of a larger roadmap for systemic change. Interesting also how all cases have a reflections session, which is very usefull in giving actual or to-be practitioners concrete tips for implementation.
      The combination of cases with theory about the methods and innovative ideas (for example, on the use of Technologies and Graphic facilitation)resulted in a superior learning experience and complements very well their first book ("Large Group Interventions: Engaging the Whole System for Rapid Change").
      Last but not least, I was happy to note how there was a shift in attention from method to challenges that organizations or communities are facing - so a focus on impact and change. A book worth reading for those that are facing or will face large scale changes.

      5 out of 5 stars Substantive and Provocative.......2007-01-16

      In the complex, interconnected, global environment that most organizations work in daily, it is no longer possible for a few people "at the top" of the organization to have all the knowledge, expertise, and perspective needed for its success. At NovaLearning, we have used large group methods with colleges and universities for about fifteen years. I have constantly seen how institutions become better -- more focused, more strategic, but also more humane -- as they incorporate ideas and insight from across the system into their operation. When Bunker and Alban's earlier book was published, I was delighted because it captured well the range of large group approaches that had developed by 1996. This new handbook goes much further.

      These are substantive case studies exceptionally well framed by Bunker and Alban's insight and experience. The diverse case study authors are generous in sharing at a level of specificity that makes real learning from their experiences possible. Each chapter is organized around the presenting challenge, the context and methodology (and why chosen), a detailed description of what actually happened, and perhaps most importantly, a set of reflections and insights that give the reader the chance to share in the authors' learning. I also found valuable the examples of how the innovative use of communication technologies can provide new opportunities as well as sometimes create unexpected limitations. I strongly recommend The Handbook of Large Group Methods to consultants who use or want to use large group methods. Individual chapters will also be important and provocative for corporate, academic, social, and political leaders and change agents.

      5 out of 5 stars How These Methods Actually Work In Practice.......2007-01-08

      The strength of this book lies in the fact that it not only provides methodologies and resources for creating change in organizations in the 21st century; but also identifies how these methodologies actually work in practice.

      A series of case studies ranges from addressing business issues at American Airlines and the BBC to managing change in organizations in Mexico and Indonesia. The reader is taken on a journey by those individuals who were responsible for implementing large group methodologies in their respective organizations.

      By reading about these success stories and the methodologies they employ, you will be able to develop a plan for you own organization that will ensure a higher level of success that would otherwise be possible.

      The Handbook of Large Group Methods: Creating Systemic Change in Organizations and Communities
      by Barbara Benedict Bunker

      I have read the earlier book, 'Large Group Interventions: Engage the Whole System for Rapid Change', by the same authors, in the late nineties. This book actually led me to their new book.

      Although I find it very educational to read about how large group methods have been applied to deal with the six major challenges organisations & communities would face in the 21st Century:

      - Working with widely dispersed organizations, & the problem of involvement and participation;
      - Working with organizations facing a serious business crisis;
      - Working with organizations in polarized & politicized environments;
      - Working in community settings with diverse interest groups;
      - Working at the global level & adapting these methods for cross-cultural use;
      - Embedding & sustaining new patterns of working together in organizations and communities;

      the part of the book that interests & fascinates me most is essentially the third section, covering Resources for Large Group Methods, as follows:

      - Tools for Effective Transitions Using Large Group Processes;
      - Graphic Facilitation & Large Group Methods;
      - Using Interactive Meeting Technologies: Overcoming the Challenges of Time, Commitment & Geographical Disperion;

      It goes to show that the collaborative technologies & tools to support large group interventions have made tremendous progress over the last few years.

      I am quite intrigued as why the innovative work in embracing group genius of other consultants are not featured in the book, e.g. Jim Channon (large system imagineering with virtual reality experience) & Matt Taylor (creative augmentation with the artful integration of visual space technologies, collaborative environments & knowledge-intensive work processes). I have read about their respective exemplary work in 'Fortune' & 'Fast Company' magazines as well as in some other business books. This is my only adverse comment about the book.

      On the whole, the book is a good resource to have in your personal library.

      4 out of 5 stars Through and comprehensive.......2006-12-06

      There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge. I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD. In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD. He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.

      If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD. But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.

      If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.

      I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc. Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it? When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all. So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info. Just not what I had purchased it for at all! =(

      This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place.
