3 out of 5 stars Small Book -- Good Content.......2007-05-29

I was disappointed when I saw the book. It's much smaller and thinner than I expected. The content is good, but it's not extensive. It's easy to read and a good reference book, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Performance Measurement Primer.......2006-09-15

In this quick and easy to read booklet, Jerry L. Harbour manages to provide sufficient information to get you started in the development of a performance measurement system. Of particular interest is the notion of measurement hierarchies which ensures that higher ups can keep a tab on the business without getting swamped in detail.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Performance Management.......2006-08-06

"The Basics of Performance Measurement" is a scholarly book that explains and presents in a readable and easily understandable manner the basic concepts that underpin performance measurement. The author methodically explains and describes the various types of performance measurement.

The reader will learn the five-step method of developing a balanced performance measurement system. Even those with no prior background to performance measurement systems will find it easy to follow and come up with performance measures for their departments or sections.

1 out of 5 stars Weak Content.......2003-08-06

Unlike other reviews, I am disappointed with this book which I bought based on the hype of other reviewers! ... And the writing style is cheesy, spouting-off some loosely defined quality terms in attempt to add some technical merit to subject matter. Having read the book (forced myself to stay the course), I can honestly say I took-away nothing of value.

Skip the book. ...

Book Description

Most organizations spend less than 1% of their training budgets on measurement and evaluation, and this figure only covers post-program analysis. Yet to truly maximize the benefits of ROI, training and performance improvement programs should be measured throughout the planning and development process.

But before jumping on the ROI "bandwagon," you should first determine whether your organization is a candidate for ROI and also how to overcome the various barriers to ROI implementation. In The Bottomline on ROI, Patricia Phillips addresses these critical issues and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer on ROI.......2002-12-19

"The Bottomline on ROI" written by Patricia Phillips explains the principles of the Return on Investment (ROI) process clearly and succinctly and points out the most imporant aspects of implementing the process in order that it be successful. It is an important addition to the field of measurement and evaluation because it provides the benefit of Phillips's extensive experience in the field of measuring training and performance improvement but at the same time does not intimidate the new practitioner. Although my library is filled with books on evaluation, I keep this one in my hip pocket.

Book Description

Using a consistent format the text is a comprehensive manual of labs that show the effects of exercise, physical conditioning, and training, and practical applications to physical health and performance in physical activity. It promotes accepted practices for administering field and laboratory tests of exercise physiology and fitness and is designed to show common principles of exercise physiology. The labs show the acute and chronic effects of exercise. The author takes care to not use expensive equipment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best and most comprehensive hands-on material available.......1998-08-19

This lab manual is the best I have seen. Both experienced and novice practitioners will find this book a valuable resource. Field and clinical tests are presented for each component of exercise physiology: aerobic, anaerobic, pulmonary, cardiovacular, body composition, etc. Each chapter begins with enough theoretical background to fully understand the physiological responses. The methods are detailed enough for the novice to follow, but advanced enough for the experienced technician to gain insights. The results and discussion sections provide excellent insights as well as tables of comparative and interpretive data. It is one of my most used shelf and lab references.

Book Description

This step-by-step handbook gives production and inventory managers the tools they need to choose and implement an optimal materials and capacity requirements planning (MCRP) system that helps reduce costs, increase sales, and improve their firm's competitive position. At the same time, it fully prepares readers to pass the materials and capacity requirements certification exam given by the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). After discussing the basics of inventory and capacity control, MCRP, and bills of material, it focuses on advanced techniques and practices, including the information systems aspects of MCRP, and how MCRP interfaces with organizational functions, including customer service, communications, inventory levels, and vendor negotiations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Keys to understanding ERP.......2002-07-14

Although this book is focused on material and capacity requirements planning from an MRP perspective, the information directly translates into ERP, making this book essential reading for anyone, business- or technically-oriented, in ERP. The reason is the techniques, issues and factors that this book covers are the same for either environment.

First, this book thoroughly describes materials management, workflow and production capacity, and does so in a clear manner. I especially appreciate the fact that the authors take pains to define and explain every term and concept that they introduce. This is a refreshing change from many book in which assumptions about the reader's knowledge is made, which often leads to frustration or misunderstanding. It also removes any ambiguity and ensures that terms that can have multiple meaning are placed into their proper context.

Second, some of the material is out of date. For example the cited limitations of MRP software applications that existed when this book was written in 1993 have long since been rectified in the newer ERP packages from SAP, Baan and J.D. Edwards. However, even in the obviously out-of-date sections of this book are hidden gems, such as the Class ABCD System that was first developed by Oliver Wright as a means of classifying the maturity of MRP implementations based on answers to a 35 question checklist. This checklist can be applied with virtually no modification to ERP systems. Other gems include the way the authors distill major concepts into their salient points, such as TQM, and show how they relate to MRP, again, the same comparisons can be applied to ERP.

The best thing about this book, however, is the detailed treatment of inventory control, materials requirements management, capacity planning and workflow - all of which are as integral to ERP as they are to the older MRP systems that this book describes. As you read this book you will gain an intimate knowledge of how everything works and fits together instead of a high-level conceptual understanding. That, in my opinion, is the best reason to get this book and thoroughly read it. In addition to this book I also recommend "Manufacturing Data Structures: Building Foundations for Excellence With Bills of Materials and Process Information" by Jerry Clement, John Sari and Andy Coldrick. That book adds the information systems perspective that is based on modern ERP systems and seamlessly augments the material in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Usefull and meaningfull book for MRPII practitioners.......2001-01-15

It provides elementary and important knowledge to those who are interested in implementation of MRPII/ ERP on factories
