The Servant Leader has a great title and develops the concept. It only falls short in giving true-to-life, concrete examples. If you are new to the concept of servant leadership, this is a great starter. Great book!

James Autry's (2001) book is essential reading for the servant-leader and servant-led who are looking for practical tools to change organizational culture. The book was arranged in four major sections: "A Foundation of Character and Vision" (pp. 1-36); Servant as Manager: The Everyday Nuts and Bolts" (pp. 37-98); The Harsh Realities of Organizational Life" (pp. 99-154); and "Finding the Balance" (pp. 155-240).

His main contribution to servant-leadership is threefold: (a) he rightly points out the famous proverb about managers doing things right and leaders doing the right things is not a prescription that recommends leaders to think only of the forest and not the trees; "instead, it is meant to define what a manager must move beyond (focusing on how to do) in order to become a leader (focusing on what to do and how to be" (pp. 37-38); (b) as an organizational leader with deep experience, he does not shy away from discussing the harder aspects of organizational life--he is an effective counterweight for some of the Pollyannaish literature; and (c) as an experienced organizational leader, he provides some management and leadership technologies and understandings that the theorist alone cannot.

A timely and insightful book. Autry brings a fresh prospective to the leadership and management table. Too often today we hear the negative aspects of leadership. Leaders are portrayed as being consumed with power and greed, not motivated to promote the company and protect the employee, but to advance their own wealth. The leader that Autry describes is much different. This leader is a servant first, placing high emphasis on the worth of the individual and believes that the people are what make and hold the company together.
Unlike other books on servant leadership, Autry gives the reader a clear, concise idea of how to apply the principals of servant leadership to the ethical and personal problems leaders face on a daily basis. He effectively illustrates "how to build a creative team, develop great morale and improve bottom-line performance". He introduces a concept that will be unsettling to some leaders when he states "Business is about people. Business is of, by, about and for people". As far as he is concerned organizations are not different, they may produce different or unique products, but they are all dependent on people and that is what makes them the same.
This is not a book about soft or fussy management; it relates to business practices that we use everyday. Instead of focusing on the bottom-line Autry's focus is on people. He believes that if he takes care of the people that work for him and treats them in a fair and ethical manner he will improve bottom line performance.
Autry addresses issues that HR professionals and leaders have to work with. The chapter on Finding the Right People is about recruiting. The chapter on Tools of the Trade focuses on job descriptions, performance standards, performance appraisals and rewards systems. Nothing touchy feely here, just areas that can either have a positive or negative impact on profits. These topics tie directly to the productivity of the company because, if done incorrectly, they will adversely affect moral and performance. There is also a great chapter on dealing with difficult employees, which I found very insightful.
This book is a great tool for the leader that is looking to have a positive impact on the lives of their employees. It acknowledges the fact that you will have legal and personal issues to deal with and it helps you work though the problems from a different prospective.
I highly recommend finding a place for it in your toolbox.

5 out of 5 stars Vital for Future Leaders.......2002-01-23

I've just spend a thought-provoking afternoon with Jim Autry. No, I've never met the man. But, I feel like we've had a personal conversation and I can call him friend. That's the way this book reads. Now I'm motivated to read his previous books: "Love and Profit," "Life and Work," and others.

As a consulting futurist, I advise my client organization's leadership teams how to prepare for their future. The emphasis of my work is workforce and workplace issues. Looking at the design and performance of the corporation of the future, I'm confident that we'll see a significantly different style of leadership than we see in today's organizations. I teach-and-preach this shift in my consultations, seminars, and speeches to management groups. The emerging style is much more employee centered, less authoritarian. Some have called this emerging model "servant leadership," so I was eager to read Autry's book to learn about his perspective.

Though a consultant and speaker himself, Autry's "been there, done that." He's practiced the principles he espouses in a number of settings, including in his former role as president of the Meredith Corporation's publishing group. This experience enables him to present real-life examples from his personal leadership career, moving this book from an academic treatise to almost a personal story of "here's how I did it . . . and got great results." Readers of this book will enjoy a feeling of sitting in a comfortable setting having a conversation with this thought leader.

The book is organized into four parts. The first part, A Foundation of Character and Vision, presents two baseline chapters: Characteristics of the Leader as a Servant, and Understanding the Three Aspects of Vision. This portion of the book alone produced sufficient value for me that I knew I wanted to give this volume high marks. Managers and leaders may find themselves looking more introspectively at their own styles, values, and expectations as they read these pages. Sure started me thinking.

Part Two of the book gets into some nitty-gritty. Application of the servant leader approach. How to build a community of people who enjoy working productively together to achieve shared desired results. Listen to the chapter titles: Finding the Right People. Training the Servant Leader. Tools of the Trade. Coping with the High-Tech Workplace.
There were a couple of places in this portion of the book where my mind began to wander, but I was quickly drawn back to the text as I gained insight into how the principles of servant leadership work hand-in-hand with the more mundane aspects of management like job descriptions and performance appraisals. I turned down a lot of page corners.

The book's third section is entitled The Harsh Realities of Organizational Life. In three chapters, Organizational Issues, Personal Issues, and Legal Issues, Autry tackles everything from Firing People to Sexual Harassment. In the fourth part of the book, Autry gets into what he calls Finding the Balance. Hard work doesn't mean nose to the grindstone 18 hours a day. A servant leader builds loyalty (Servant Leadership and the Crisis of Loyalty), and helps resolve counterproductive problems in the workplace (Conflict). The other two chapters in this section address The Responsibilities of Family and Community Life and Leadership When Things Go Wrong and Times Are Bad. Good stuff for today's world!

The book closes with an interesting approach to an epilogue, Script for a Future Slide Show. In 24 snapshots of workplace situations in 2015, Autry gives us his glimpse of what life will be in the future with servant leadership. I doubt that we'll have to wait until 2015, agree that we'll see what he forecasts. I believe we'll see this leadership design in successful companies long before then, and it's application will engender positive differences in workforce stability, productivity, profitability, and the happiness of both leaders and led.

The book includes a workable index, but I would have liked to see a more comprehensive table of contents. With that aid, readers coming into this book would have a greater sense of the value they will receive. I'd encourage you to read this book, with a mind that is not only open from curiosity, but one that is open to make some changes in the way you lead.
Special note to aspiring future leaders: don't miss this one! And do some more reading on the topic as more books come out on servant leadership in the years ahead.

4 out of 5 stars Wouldn't The World Be a Better Place............2002-01-22

..if all Managers could subscribe to this method. Mr. Autry presents his position on Servent Leadership, and makes all who read it examine themselves. It was great fun imagining a work place like the one Mr. Autry describes.

First of all, the writing style is pleasent and engaging. Very inviting and not intimidating. It's like having a quite conversation with a peaceful man of letters. The book goes fast, so it's maybe three nights of reading time. The lessons contained are very penetrating. Self examination will be a good result of this book's reading.

I particularly appreciated the section at the end of the book where 24 photos of a future company are examined. It gives hope to all of us, but sadly, I feel it's just too good to be true.

Non the less, please read this book for your business soul, and maybe your business approach. It can help if we try to put it in place. Thanks Mr. Autry for the peace and humanity.

Sorry for the cliche on my Title line. But I really mean it!

We've studied the leadership skills of Caeser, Napoleon, US Presidents, Kings, CEO's and Army Generals. Why did it take so long to get around to studying the leadership skills of Jesus?

In this slim volume of 125 pages, the authors manage to distill their thoughts about servant leadership and situational leadership.The format and presentation of the book is pleasant and allows room for reflection.

"Another way to tell a self-serving leader from a servant leader is how they approach succession planning". p.18

An interesting statement as it serves as a test to differentiate a self-serving leader from a servant leadership. The authors were correct to use this as most self-serving leaders will never let go as it is so closely linked to their ego.

"The journey of life is to move from a self-serving heart to a serving heart. You finally become an adult when you realize that life is about what you give, rather than what you get." p.22

An indirect reference to 1 Corinthians 13 where the apostle Paul writes about love. He wrote that as a child, we think like a child but when we are grown, we give up childish things.

"What is your leadership EGO?
EGO- Edging God Out or Exalting God Alone " p.26

An interesting play on the word EGO.

"How to start Exalting God Only:
* Embrace an external perspective of the here and now in light of the then and there.

This 12-step program to become a servant leadership is a powerful use of the philosophy behind the AA's 12 step programs. It assumes that a leader has come to a point where he or she is willing to humble themselves and be a servant leader. Many of us accept intellectually that we are to be servant leaders and force ours to behave thus. That is a recipe for failure as our self-serving self will always win out. As will the AA's program, a leader must be broken before he or she can walk through the program.

"The seven reactions people have to change- and the ways leaders can ease the transition.
1. People will feel awkward, ill at ease and self-conscious when confronted by change- tell people what to expect.
2. People will feel alone even if everyone else is going through the same change-structure activities that create involvement. Encourage individuals to share ideas and to work together to help each other through change.
3. People will think that first about what the have to give up- don't try to sell the benefits of change effort initially. Let people mourn their perceived losses. Listen to them.
4. People will think they can handle so much change at once-set priorities on which changes to make, and go for the long run.
5. People will be concerned that they don't have enough resources (time, money, skill, etc) to implement to change-encourage creative problem solving.
6. People will be at different levels of readiness for any particular change-Don't label or pick on people. Recognise that some people are risk-takers and others take longer to feel secure. Someone who's an early adopter of one type of change might balk at another type of change.
7. If pressure is taken off, people will revert to old behaviours-keep people focussed on maintaining the change and managing the journey." P.66-67

Some of the suggestions given are good. But somehow, it sounds like manipulation to me. Is there no better way for leaders to help their people change without manipulation? Missing here is to tell people why they have to change. Maybe it will be easier if people understand why they have to change. Then the leader will have their full cooperation.

All in all, this is a good read, giving the reader an overview.For more details about situational leadership you will need to refer to their earlier books.

Finally a book that truly provides insight, skills, and wisdom on what it really means to be a leader here on earth. Everyone is a leader in some way and I highly recommend this book. Being a servant leader is true leadership.

I have been studying servant leadership recently and was excited to read what Kennth Blanchard, author of the "One Minute Manager" would have to say on the topic; especially from a Christian point of view.

I was hoping to find a meaty, substantial book with examples and illustrations from his extensive experience in business and leadership. Instead, "Servant Leader" is merely a collection of quips, quotes, and a few Bible verses.

It is so disappointing when good authors market these tidbit books. Blanchard must have some wonderful insights and knowledge but this particular book is one which offers more milk than meat. The pages are beautrifully illustrated and the color graphics are very professional - it looks great on the coffee table.

However, if you are looking for a fuller treatment of Servant Leadership, I recommend the recent books by James Hunter: "The Servant" and "The World's Most Powerful Leadership Principle".

I confess that it was my error in ordering this book without first reading the reviews more closely. While this book is excellent in its content, it is not a corporate management book (in my opinion). Instead this book discusses following Jesus as a role model in managing your own life. Numerous quotes from the bible and religious scholars are included. (I always appreciated Blanchard's "One Minute Manager", and I was looking for a treatment of Servant Leadership in a corporate context.)

James Hunter follows up on "The Servant" with this book: "The World's Most Powerful Leadership Principle". I am still not sure there is enough new material presented to warrant this release. It contains so much from the first book but does add additional quips, quotes, and anecdotes, and some new material.

Perhaps Hunter wrote this book to appeal more broadly to a secular readership. "The Servant" was clearly a spiritual journey; "World's Most Powerful..." is a more secular treatise and will be much more widely accepted in MBA classrooms.

But whether one approaches servant leadership from a faith or secular point of view, the truth remains the same. These basic, solid principles of leadership work.

Not all truths about human nature and leadership are self-evident: some are contained in paradox: leaders must be servants, giving of yourself releases giving to you, to get love you must give love first, and others.

All in all, this is a solid book which contains some real gems.

As the CEO of Manco, Inc., Jack Kahl is a very successful businessman. Now he can add accomplished author to his list, because Leading from the Heart is a great read that enlightened me to many effective leadership tactics. His idea of a servant leader is inspiring and provides leadership techniques that make people WANT to follow you. This book would be a great guide for any entrepreneur that wants to build a successful business based on good values. Everything in Leading from the Heart is relevant and applicable to real life situations. Kahl's ideas can lead you to a successful career and a happier life as well.

This is a great book. I've been a student of leadership for the past few years, always reading about historically significant men and women and how they were able to impact the world. Then I picked up Kahl's book, and I couldn't put it down. Servant leadership isn't a new concept, many of the powerful leaders I've studied employed this technique. However, in today's society, we rarely focus on a servant leadership technique. Kahl does a great job of outlining what real leadership looks like and how one can implement it in his everyday life. He makes the case that being a servant leader isn't "weak" or "sweet." No, it's the most effective way to influence others, reach your goals, and make sure you AND your team are successful. Whether you are a CEO, business owner, or simply in charge of leading your family, you will find relevant advice and concepts to think about in this book.

When my boyfriend first handed me this book and said I had to check it out, I was honestly a little offended. I've never been one to read life-coaching books in any area, especially not in my job. As a young assistant DA, I thought I did a pretty good job of managing myself and my employees, and I didn't need a book to tell me how to do that. But as soon as I read the first chapter, I realized why he had given me the book, which he got from a friend. Kahl takes a different approach to the role of leadership, championing the idea of acting as a "servant" to those around you in order to get the best out of them. The idea sounded crazy to me at first, but as I starting practicing some of his suggestions, I saw such an increase in productivity and a general uplift in the attitude around the office! I can't believe a simple book could make such a difference, but it sure did. I recommend this book for anyone who is in a position of leadership, no matter how high or low in the company, because you could learn a lot from Kahl.

As a small business owner, I am always looking for good leadership and business books; Leadership From the Heart is one of the best books I've found in a very long time. Jack Kahl shares how he mananged to build a business worth more than $300 million, Manco Inc., and still maintain an ethical, character-driven leadership style. Kahl makes it clear that you can unite ethics and a bottom line, while still being successfull. The best thing about this book is that Kahl's leadership style isn't a gimmic. He really wants to be successful, but he knows that those accomplishments are more lucrative, and feel better, if the people around him are successful too. This book teaches you to be a better leader, better business person, and a better human being.

This very small book takes only and hour or two to read yet a lifetime to digest. Mr. Greenleaf's compelling insight into the essence of true leadership based on the servant perspective shows how true leaders lead from the front...and the back.

The reader will quickly grasp the servant leader model at work in the true great leaders of the 20th century such as Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Gandhi. These people who made enormous differences in their own country and the world at large through leading by service.

The book is not in any way a religious treatise but a thought provoking, energizing investigation into what may be the only leadership paradigm that the upcoming generation will respond to.

Don't let the title "10 to Keys to Servant Leadership" fool you. "The Empowered Leader" by Calvin Miller is a book with genuine depth and insight. He makes you take a long hard look at your own leadership. Miller has not written a "how to" manual for "would be" leaders but he has written words to awaken the leadership potential of those already called to lead. The author tells us, "Whatever leadership is, it is not a hankering after success. Leadership lies in a hunger to understand and make the world a better place."

King David is the example. Thought his life you will learn ten valuable keys to the life of a servant leader, which include: fostering an honest servant image; learning the art of self-perception; networking; vision; decision making; defining, structuring, and motivating; the politics of grace and the abuse of power; and coping with difficult people. The book is not just geared for pastors, but for any leader wanting to lead from a Christian worldview. I recommend "The Empowered Leader" to all God called leaders.

    I envy you if you have not read this book yet. No... I am not connected to the author in any way other than I admire and appreciate his work.

    It's essentially the unintentional notes of an old man who is no longer among us. Unintentional because... its a collection of essays that he wrote to himself. I don't think he had any intention of sharing his private thoughts, doubts, and musing.

    If you are questioning the path in life you have taken, going through a rough time in your life, or simply want to know what real strength is about... you'll appreciate this book.

    Greenleaf's observations are penetrating and will definitely cause you to examine your own life. You'll either love it or hate it... depending upon how strong and just what kind of leader... you really are.

    I have shared this book with several C-Level friends.

      I read this book after I had been made a leader in a number of places in my life. Home, work, Church, all at the same time. For the most part, I failed in each of these areas of leadership. Then I read this book. WOW! I wish I had it prior to my earlier trials.

      This book has been very practical and has taught me many things I needed to know about my role as a leader, or better put, as God's leader through the life of Joshua. It has changed the way I lead and the way I see leadership.
