A MUST-HAVE for teachers of writing.......2003-06-21
As a former editor who became a teacher late in life, I was miserable at conferencing. All I could do was point out mistakes and things that need to be revised. No wonder my kids didn't enjoy writing! The one line from Dr. Thomason's book that jumped out at me was "The editor's job is to improve the writing; the teacher's job is to improve the writer." That says it all. His book is easy to read--I read it in about 3 hours, then wrote a summary of it for my colleagues. Lots of practical advice...how to conference, how to start peer conferencing, how to get them to self-conference. Another valuable piece of advice from the author: Don't praise the writer, praise the writing. Always find something to praise, even in poor writing.
practical and effective writing conference strategies.......1999-05-03
Writer to Writer is an easy "read", one that allows busy teachers to pick it up, read a chapter and come away with a practical and effective strategy to use with student writers. The strategies suggested by Dr. Thomason are designed to help turn a classroom into a writing community and go beyond improving a piece of writing to developing the writer in each child. He is a writer who truly understands not only the writing process, but the challenges for teachers and students in today's classrooms.
Beneficial to teachers!.......1999-04-13
Dr.Thomason's book Writer to Writer allows any teacher the freedom to take the writing process one step further in their classroom. We had the luxury of bringing Dr. Thomason to our district as a consultant and I was convinced that he alone, initiated our teacher's to be risk takers and allow their children the opportunity to express their thoughts freely and without failure. I recommend this book to any teacher struggling with implementing the writing process in their classroom.

Book Description
There's no better way to deepen children's comprehension and appreciation of books than with literature circles. But let's face it, it's not always easy to plan, manage, and evaluate them—until now. Whether you're starting from scratch or just looking for new ideas, Moving Forward with Literature Circles provides all the tools you need—guidelines, minilessons, booklists, checklists, and more—to maintain a successful program in your classroom.

Literature circles.......2006-11-10
This book is good but Harvey Daniels book provides a better explaination. This is a great second resource.
Moving Forward with Literature Circles.......2006-02-25
This is a teacher-friendly book, as well as being based in recent research. The text is easy to read with useful appendices and bibliography.
Different Approach.......2005-10-15
This book has good information and ideas. Howevever they promote a "discussion prompts" approach, rather than a "role sheets" approach. So if you're looking for help in teaching students about the Connector, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard and so on, this book is not it. However if the "roles" are not working for you, maybe this book would give you the different approach you need.
Very Helpful.......2003-05-25
This is a great book for those who are beginning to experiment with literature circles in the classroom. From start to finish this book gives ideal situations, practices and real examples. It also recognizes that literature circles often have many problems and frustrations and walks the reader through scenarios step by step. There are mini strategy lessons as well as reproducibles that are very helpful. I love this book and have already recommended it to many of my colleagues.
Very helpful, says my daughters teacher.......2002-03-24
First, I am one the authors' sisters. That said, these are the comments made by my daughter's teacher after getting this book as a gift.
"Where did you find out about this book? It is great, I love it."
I got to read bits of it as it was being written, and have since read the whole thing. It is helpful in assisting students to read to comprehend books, rather than just reading to write a book report or fill in the blank type tests.

Book Description
Artist Mark Cooper creates remarkable art with children. Visiting classrooms around the country, he helps children create ambitious art objects—together. From decorated sculptures to billboards against violence to maps of the world, children plan, design, and complete the projects themselves, often tying their art to larger themes. The resulting pieces have been featured in newspapers and displayed in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and many other venues.
Wherever Cooper has worked, he has left behind delighted teachers—and not just art teachers—who are inspired and empowered to create similar projects.
Making Art Together will enable all teachers and other adults who work with groups of children to re-create the successes of Cooper's versatile approach. Cooper argues that seeing teachers as master artists, using the insights of contemporary art, and tapping the unique power of collaboration can revolutionize what art can accomplish in schools. And he makes the argument practical with dozens of examples and scores of illustrations. Making Art Together promises to change the way people think about creating art with kids.
"A thought-provoking book, this volume will be a wonderful and useful resource for all parents, teachers and youth leaders. The authors do a tremendous job of making these large-scale projects seem very doable. Even teachers without any art experience or knowledge will come away feeling empowered that they can tackle what is described in this book….This resource explains the power of collaborating with youth while providing wonderful details on brainstorming, funding, making and displaying powerful pieces of art."
—Voices of Youth Advocates, review in the February 2007 issue
Mark Cooper is a professor of art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and at Boston College. His solo work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums, and his work with kids has received the support of leading foundations and arts organizations.

Using all the space on the page..........2004-05-02
In the forward to this text by Mary Alice Mulligan and Rufus Burrow, Jr. (both are professors at my seminary, with whom I have studied in the past few years), David Buttrick states that one of the difficulties mainline Protestantism has had in the past generation has been its inability to preach to the poor and adjust to the general change in American culture, that change being that increasing affluence is no longer considered a birthright, even of the (now shrinking) middle class. He suggests as other analysts have that we live 'between the times', likening this period to that between the Renaissance and the Reformation, where there is cultural upheaval and confusion.
Into the mix, Mulligan and Burrow suggest a programme of twelve sessions to be used by churches to recover a sense and practice of ministry to the poor and marginalised. Ministry in the Margins for the authors takes on a different meaning that what most comfortable, mainline churches might think of as being such a ministry - it is not simply charity or volunteer work, however well-intentioned and dedicated; it is not self-pity at the loss of status of the church; it is not gentrification, which can make an old neighbourhood or community look very nice, but usually at the expense of pushing out the previous people; and it is not an 'anything goes' idea of accepting everyone and everything. Mulligan and Burrow see Ministry in the Margin as communal, Christian, and focused upon those persons who have been ignored, abused and overlooked by traditional hierarchies and powers.
There are several practical aspects of the text. This is intended to be used in a group setting, as people come together and read the Bible, study and converse with each other, taking care to include the voices of all. The twelve sessions consist of study/presentation times and question/answer times, done in pairs. The book itself has six primary sections, each divided into a presentation of materials (for the first sessions of the pairs), and then questions to be considered over the course of time until the second session of the pairs. Mulligan and Burrow suggest that different people lead sessions, but that the same person who leads a presentation session conduct the question/answer session following. This gives both adequate lead-time for questions and answers, as well as sufficient time in the planning and conduct of meetings - question time won't get squeezed out in favour of more presentation.
The six primary sections look at the idea of Ministry in the Margins, working through issues of vocation and call to Ministry, looking at biblical and theological bases for such ministry, a special emphasis on the prophet Micah ('what does the Lord require'), putting together a practical Ministry in the Margins, and finally recognising and mending wounds.
Mulligan and Burrow weave together narratives from history, biblical sources and spiritual literature to create an interesting narrative. They draw on rabbinic sources (God's council with the angels to find where the world needs mending) as easily as personal stories (their son's writing lessons in school) to bring their points to life in an accessible and enlightening manner.
