Book Description

Beginning with the million-copy bestsellers First, Break All the Rules and Now, Discover Your Strengths, Marcus Buckingham jump-started the strengths movement that is now sweeping the work world, from business to government to education. Now that the movement is in full swing, Buckingham's new book answers the ultimate question: How can you actually apply your strengths for maximum success at work?

Research data show that most people do not come close to making full use of their assets at work -- in fact, only 17 percent of the workforce believe they use all of their strengths on the job. Go Put Your Strengths to Work aims to change that through a six-step, six-week experience that will reveal the hidden dimensions of your strengths. Buckingham shows you how to seize control of your assets and rewrite your job description under the nose of your boss. You will learn:

• Why your strengths aren't "what you are good at" and your weaknesses aren't "what you are bad at."

• How to use the four telltale signs to identify your strengths.

• The simple steps you can take each week to push your time at work toward those activities that strengthen you and away from those that don't.

• How to talk to your boss and your colleagues about your strengths without sounding like you're bragging and about your weaknesses without sounding like you're whining.

• The fifteen-minute weekly ritual that will keep you on your strengths path your entire career.

With structured exercises that will become part of your regular workweek and proven tactics from people who have successfully applied the book's lessons, Go Put Your Strengths to Work will arm you with a radically different approach to your work life. As part of the book's program you'll take an online Strengths Engagement Track, a focused and powerful gauge that has proven to be the best way to measure the level of engagement of your strengths or your team's strengths. You can also download the first two segments of the renowned companion film series Trombone Player Wanted.

Go Put Your Strengths to Work will open up exciting uncharted territory for you and your organization. Join the strengths movement and thrive.

4 out of 5 stars Find Your Strengths and Use Them.......2007-06-14

I must be honest and state that I did not use all of the tools that come in the back of this book on how to discover my strengths and weaknesses. Like many people, I generally knew what my strengths are and know what I enjoy doing. This book was useful, however, in helping me focus on what my specific strengths are and in what situation I might be able to employ them more efficiently. Be aware that this book focuses exclusively on putting your strengths to better use in the workplace and leaves out personal, family, or any other useful context, although the skills and techniques are arguably interchangeable. Overall I thought that the advice in this book was solid, but found the chapter on how to approach your boss/supervisor/manager in performance reviews a little bit unrealistic. Blended throughout the book's chapters are the stories of a few ambitious employees who used the techniques Buckingham describes, and although I felt that he over relied on them to make his point, the book is still a valuable book in the self-help, business genre.

5 out of 5 stars Stop feeding hay to a dead horse.......2007-06-08

Years ago, there was a series of television commercials that featured the "Kemper Cavalry." Each effectively communicated a message from Kemper Insurance that said, in effect, "We'll always be there when you need us most." Many people apparently believe that there is such an alternative to focus, preparation, hard work, personal accountability, patience, self-reliance, persistence, etc. For them, other alternatives include the Tooth Fairy, silver bullets, divine intervention, lotteries, and e-mails from widows, orphans, and attorneys who are émigrés from Africa.

I first became aware of Marcus Buckingham when I read First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently (1999) in which he and co-author Curt Coffman draw upon 80,000 interviews conducted by Gallup during the past 25 years. They suggest "four keys" to becoming an excellent manager: Finding the right fit for employees by getting their strengths in proper alignment with the tasks for which they are responsible, focusing on those strengths, defining the right results and making the given expectations crystal clear to those involved, and finally, hiring for talent as well as for knowledge and skills rather than merely filling a vacant position according to a job description that may no longer be relevant. Good stuff.

In this volume, Buckingham quite correctly emphasizes (a) knowing what one's personal strengths are and then (b) leveraging them to achieve desirable results, whatever the nature and extent of those results may be. He is one of several past or current executives within The Gallup Organization who have written a number of articles and books, based on a wealth of research data. Several Web sites now offer access to much of this information, notably gallup.com, BuckinghamLive.com, and strengthsfinder.com.

As Buckingham explains, he wrote this book to show "you how to take action. It teaches you a simple six step discipline to make the most of your strengths and neutralize your weaknesses, and how you can stick to this discipline despite the pressures of a company, a boss, or even a spouse pulling you off your strengths path. There are six chapters in the book. Six steps. So, what you have in this book is a six week, six step discipline. Each step constitutes a week of reading, action, and discovery, and each week builds on the one before. Don't try to read the book in one sitting. Instead, keep up this weekly rhythm of read, act, discover, and, by the end of the book, you'll know how to take a stand for your strengths and leverage them as never before. Your performance will soar, and more significant still, you'll know how to sustain this level of performance throughout the many twists and turns of your career."

It is worth noting that each copy of this book includes its own ID code. As Buckingham explains, "This code not only allows you a free viewing of the first two films of Trombone Player Wanted, it also gives you the right to take the Strengths Engagement Tack at the beginning of the book, and again at the end. This short, web-based survey first measures how engaged your strengths are as compared to the rest of the working world, and then reveals how engaged your strengths are going to be in the near-term future. If you work as part of a team, your results can then be combined with your colleagues to create a Strengths Engagement Track team score." Each copy of Tom Rath's StrengthsFinder 2.0 also has a code, one that serves as an exclusive link to The Gallup Organization's "StrengthsFinder 2.0" self-diagnostic. These access codes are substantial value-added benefits to the material with which they are provided.

Especially in recent years, many busy executives have set aside time, energy, and (in some instances their own) funds to take all manner of standardized tests, some of which identify both strengths and weaknesses (i.e. areas in which improvement is needed). The Gallup Organization's resources enable them to obtain additional information about themselves while correlating that information with information generated by hundreds of thousands of others. "Now what?"

As indicated earlier, Buckingham strongly recommends focusing almost entirely on developing one's strengths and then leveraging them whenever and wherever possible. For supervisors, he strongly recommends that -- similarly -- they focus on their direct reports' strengths, constantly helping to develop them further rather than becoming preoccupied with weaknesses, and get those strengths in proper alignment with tasks that are most appropriate to the given strengths.

"How to do that effectively?" Read his book.

I feel like I wasted my time with this book. It was too vague and not helpful. The previous book was excellent this one was just an attempt to make more money.

2 out of 5 stars A little on the monotonous side.......2007-05-11

I am beginning to realise that if you ve read one self help book then you ve red them all. This book has nothing that has not been said before.

The writing style, for me atleast, was a little boring and couldnt keep my attention for long.

Book Description

From Stephen R. Covey's eldest son comes a revolutionary new path towards productivity and satisfaction. Trust, says Stephen M.R. Covey, is the very basis of the new global economy, and he shows how trust—and the speed at which it is established with clients, employees and constituents—is the essential ingredient for any high-performance, successful organization.

For business leaders and public figures in any arena, The Speed of Trust offers an unprecedented and eminently practical look at exactly how trust functions in our every transaction and relationship—from the most personal to the broadest, most indirect interaction—and how to establish trust immediately so that you and your organization can forego the time-killing, bureaucratic check-and-balance processes so often deployed in lieu of actual trust.

4 out of 5 stars Great guidebook for achieving or reconstructing trust........2007-06-28

This book offers a very good action plan regarding achieving and/or reconstructing trust which, if followed, would certainly be effective. Most of it is like common sense that you may have never heard anyone put words to before. The only shortcomings of this book are that it is severely anecdotal (some of the anecdotes are strong and useful, but many are too personal to the author and they therefore lose credibility or pertinence) and kind of long-winded - by the time you near the end, you are ready to not even look at it's cover for perhaps a year! Overall, though, a great book which appropriately emphasizes that the same qualities which make for good personal relationships make for good business relationships, as well - which is helpful if you are or you are dealing with a person who can see the importance from one angle but perhaps not the other.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, worthwhile and timely.......2007-06-07

I recommend this book. It is well written, practical and has up to date examples. The book is very timely and describes important and fundemental processes in both business and personal life, which if mastered will lead to a more fulfilling and successful life.

Also includes some nice references to his dad's books/life and provides his own twist/interpretation. Very nice.

5 out of 5 stars His writing and business acument surpass his father!.......2007-05-08

His writing and business acument surpass his father! Excellent, easy to read and very relevant to our business environment today.

He has the same gifts of business acumen and writing that his father, Steve Covey. I have a whole liabray of Steve Covey's books, and look forward to continuing to fill my bookshelf with the next generation Covey!

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful approach to a nebulous concept.......2007-04-24

Really an intriguing book... fascinating. It helps to look at Trust within a framework. I am putting this to use in my business and personal life.

5 out of 5 stars The Apple Did Not Fall Far From the Tree.......2007-04-10

Stephen M.R. Covey is the son of the famous Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Not surprisingly, many of his father's themes are interwoven throughout this book.

Covey maintains that "Nothing is as fast as the speed of trust," meaning nothing can accelerate a transaction, a task, or project of any kind like trust. For instance, when there is a high level of trust between parties in a business transaction, deals can be made in minutes with a handshake.

Not only does trust make things faster, it simply makes every aspect of our lives better. To use another business example, a high level of trust between an organization's members promotes innovation, generates productivity, and results in cost savings. Trust "changes everything." It's not just a touchy-feely concept. Covey gives statistics to back it up.

Covey explains that trust is a function of character and competence. He further breaks these components down into "4 Cores of Credibility" - integrity, intent, capabilities, and results. He also outlines 13 Behaviors that generate trust. The Cores and Behaviors "are the tools that establish or maintain trust in every context." Similar to the 7 Habits, it all starts with the individual - i.e. self trust. Trust then can extend or ripple an additional 4 waves - to relationship trust, organizational trust, market trust, and societal trust. Covey gives tips for how to develop trust at each wave, resulting in increasingly remarkable outcomes.

After reading the book, you will believe that, "prioritizing trust - actively seek to establish it, grow it, restore it, and wisely extend it - will bring personal and organizational dividends that far exceed any other path." Although it has value for everyone, this book is especially helpful and important reading for those in leadership positions.

Book Description

Principles of Corporate Finance is the worldwide leading text that describes the theory and practice of corporate finance. Throughout the book the authors show how managers use financial theory to solve practical problems and as a way of learning how to respond to change by showing not just how but why companies and management act as they do. The text is comprehensive, authoritative, and modern and yet the material is presented at a common sense level. The discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor for which the book is well known and highly regarded. This text is a valued reference for thousands of practicing financial managers. Richard A. Brealey and Stewart C. Myers welcome Franklin Allen as a new coauthor to this Eighth Edition. Sometimes the addition of a new coauthor means that one of the existing authors proposes to take a back seat. That is not the case with this team. Dr. Allen’s addition represents a genuine increase in capacity and brings fresh expertise and ideas to an already tremendously successful textbook and partnership.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lacking Full Explanations.......2007-06-07

This book leaves me with more questions about finance than I have answers. Who do the authors think they are writing for? It surely is not the beginner MBA student. It seems like words are expensive because they do not fully or even partially explain concepts. Finance is difficult but it should not be impossible. I should not have to read and reread to figure out what the heck they are talking about. Maybe they should serve as advisors to this text and let someone who knows how to write actually write the book. These guys may be leaders and brillant but they are poor communicators. I'm not thrilled with my professor either. Is he a cheerleader or a teacher?

5 out of 5 stars Good introductory finance book.......2007-04-11

This is an easy to ready comprehensive introduction to basic finance concepts. I would not recommend it to finance majors but I consider it a good choice for general MBA or other students that do not have a stong quantitative finance background.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text - you get your money's worth.......2007-01-09

I got this book for my Intro to Corp Finance class. The professor was aweful, but the book got me through the class. There are several other finance classes that use the same text, so for once I feel like I'll get my money's worth out of a textbook.

3 out of 5 stars Good text, serious editing problems.......2007-01-05

I thought the text was well organized and well explained, but a lot of the problems in the book required concepts that the text didn't explore. On top of that, the CD that came with the text had some serious editing problems where information in problems in the text didn't match what was provided in the CD. The notes on the CD were laced in editing errors. The book was overall pretty good, but it is frustrating when you encounter problems where the concepts weren't really laid out in the chapters.

4 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program.......2006-12-21

I have to agree with others that this book is a bit unwieldly. However, this book is considered a mainstay in most MBA finance programs and I've worked with many people that use it as a reference. I think the problem is that corporate finance is not an easy subject to teach and get across concisely. I have actually read many finance books on my own and found most of them unwieldly. Therefore I would still have to recommend this book if you are trying to learn corporate finance.

5 out of 5 stars fun and meaningful.......2007-06-27

It's a simple advice he gives, but it's done in an entertaining and convincing way. There are people who say becoming rich isn't about how much you know, but how well you do just a few things. His advice certaintly can't go wrong. It's not getting rich quick, but it is getting rich.

5 out of 5 stars The Best First Book on Building Wealth.......2007-06-24

I would recommend this book as the best first book on money for anyone that would like to begin reading about the subject. It's engaging and fun, teaching the basics on saving and spending wisely for those who want to learn to develop a proper wealth building mindset. I would also recommend parents or educators give this book to their children to read (even though it's not a children's book) because it's accessible to people of all ages and enjoyable enough to keep the interest of even an overstimulated child.

This is the place to begin to learn about money, but not the end of the road. After you've read this try more advanced books like "The Millionaire Next Door" or "The Millionaire Mind," both by Thomas Stanley. You should be well on your way to an understanding of how to build wealth.

1 out of 5 stars Only read it if you have no common sense of your own........2007-06-21

This is the worst of the Suzy Orman / Rich-Dad genre.

The book uses an awkward, cheezy, and stilted story-telling style to tell you the secret of becoming rich. Here it is, I'm going to save you $10 and then hour it takes to read this:

1. Save money
2. Invest it wisely

Shocker.

4 out of 5 stars The Rules of Wealth Elegantly Told.......2007-06-17

Clason has written an elegant fable on how to be wise financially.

He makes the education very entertaining in a short easy read. He fascinates us with what seems to be real historical artifacts and genuine history of a great nation.

If one has read any other such material (like Rich Dad Poor Dad or Smart Couple Finish Rich) you will find many of the same principles. Mind you Clason's book came before the two mentioned so he gets more credit.

What he has over the others is the simplicity of the concepts and their digestable telling. He gives very basic but essential advice that would guide the reading of other more technical books. He equips us with the CONCEPT of money management and the invaluable character that must accompany it rather than the technical details of particular industries.

If you are just beginning to educate yourself on money or would like to introduce a friend to that world - this is the book to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Please don't read - Greatest Investment Advice Ever.......2007-06-13

Simple fast & educational. If it is read & followed wealth will be achieved.
The book has been around for over 70 years & still has a very litle following. The advice is over 3000 years old & still people have no idea about savings & investing
Please keep doing what you have always been doing so you get the same results while those that have read this & follow it's advice will reach their financial goals

Well organized and adequately comprehensive. Could use more material in certain areas, but that's a personal perspective. Overall, good book.

3 out of 5 stars Neutral.......2006-11-10

Kinda hard to understand and the information provided in the text is not presented very clearly. Maybe it is just me and I did not finish the whole book anyway. I actually haven't read any of it since chapter 2... since now I rely on mostly the professor's notes which I find easier to understand than the textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-10-30

I had 6 edition of Corporate Finance when on my MBA program, which at that time was an excellent book. Now i wanted to refresh the knowledge and bought this one, and it was a good improvement over the one i had. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn or refresh corporate finance.

This book is an easy read. It has tons of useful information. I would recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars New Edition is Better.......2005-12-05

There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read. More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.

I liked it very much, and recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21

The author provided some good examples demonstrating a picture of business and its environment. People who have exposed to Industrial Organization (or at least some levels of application of game theory) will get bored of all arguments without mentioning anything about its quantitative aspect.

3 out of 5 stars The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21

The author provided some good examples to demonstrate some business's environments. The book is very readable. You will get bored if you have exposed to industrial organization or some applications of game theory.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Easy Reading.......1999-05-30

I've read a good chunk of this book during a B-school elective on non-market strategies, and found it imparted some valuable information. It's not very prescriptive if that's what you're looking for. But it made me feel like I got something out of the class despite an unstellar professor.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Comprehensive.......2006-03-17

This text offers great details, but I did not rate it as 5 stars because (1) when searching for content, it is difficult to see the key words in the text and (2) the case studies are well selected, but since they are inserted throughout the chapter, it is challenging to determine where the case ends and the author's content begins.

Overall, I would recommend the Jennings text and will keep a copy on my shelf.

This book was assigned to one of my MBA classes. The book itself was a good source of reference not only for my business law class but also to other two classes. The book's language is simple and easy to understand. The only flaw I found about this this book was that some cases were complex and I had to refer to actual law books and regulations. Overall, I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful text; accomplishes stated purpose.......1999-01-18

This book is a textbook useful for a stand-alone course in Law & Ethics. The strength of the book to me was the comprehensive listing of court cases and internet sites.

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."

The laws cull their principles from many great schemers--and scheming instructors--throughout history, from Sun-Tzu to Talleyrand, from Casanova to con man Yellow Kid Weil. They are straightforward in their amoral simplicity: "Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit," or "Discover each man's thumbscrew." Each chapter provides examples of the consequences of observance or transgression of the law, along with "keys to power," potential "reversals" (where the converse of the law might also be useful), and a single paragraph cleverly laid out to suggest an image (such as the aforementioned thumbscrew); the margins are filled with illustrative quotations. Practitioners of one-upmanship have been given a new, comprehensive training manual, as up-to-date as it is timeless.

Book Description

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills three thousand years of the history of power in to forty-eight well explicated laws. As attention--grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), the virtue of stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and many demand the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"), but like it or not, all have applications in real life. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded--or been victimized by--power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining read - great stories and some applicable principles .......2007-06-15

The 48 Laws of Power is written in a very peculiar format with a number of stories that support each law, as well as plenty of quotes, located on on the margin of the pages, from Machiavelli, Baltasar Gracián, Sun Tsu and many others. I have read complaints that many of these laws seem to contradict each other and perhaps they are right, however, the laws are more like a tactical approach to augment power and tactics do not work in every circumstance, that's why we need to have a strong arsenal of them. I assume that the term "laws" was used to make the title more appealing and marketable. Others have characterized this book's message as irresponsible, greedy and reprehensible. But the Author clearly states that this is merely an account of the tactics that have been used by countless kings, rulers, politicians and leaders, he never claims that they are moral or right, he simply states that they have worked in the past.

Overall this book is thoroughly entertaining and many of the "laws" do have practical applications, others, however, go against my values and therefore I only read for the interesting stories. I thoroughly recommend this book, throughout the years I have referenced this book many times.

One of the laws that I remember clearly is Law #4 "Always say less than necessary" and in that spirit I end this review. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Fundamentally flawed.......2007-06-13

This book is fundamentally flawed because it offers incorrect advise to its primary audience. Furthermore, the book does not clearly state the premises for using Greene's type of power and obscures the global structure of power. There are many different kinds of power, so this book makes you blind to all other forms of power by focusing exclusively on selfish, cloak-and-dagger power.

A relevant social question is why selfish, cloak-and-dagger power is apparently relevant in our society, or in Machiavelli's era, or in the court of Louis XIV. I would postulate that all three of these cultures share an atmosphere of fog and deception which allows such forms of power to flourish. Specifically, in our culture, mass media and corporate culture encourage such behavior.

If you are interested in having power, you might well ask whether the route outlined in this book is worth following. I believe that those who are submerged in corporate culture or in the business of mass media may find the advice of this book useful for gaining perhaps a factor of two in power within their current organization, however, it is mathematically implausible for the typical person using Greene's method to gain much more power in such a hierarchy. The fundamental limitation to Greene's power is that only so many people can successfully use encompassing webs of deception to rise to the top of a given power structure: if you imagine that the typical corporation or media conglomerate is a binary tree and like most people you are on the bottom of the tree, even if 5% of the people in an organization use Greene's power to "climb" in their hierarchy then you realize that it is mathematically implausible for the average Greene-follower to rise more than one or two levels. Actually, it's statistically impossible to rise more than one or two levels using any strategy, but Greene's is actively dangerous because it may get you in trouble and because the cloud of people using Greene's techniques at the top of any power structure are guaranteed to be far better than you at their "game" -- they've been brought up to be this way, educated since childbirth. As a practical example, my father worked in the technical corporate world for 25 years with many outstanding talents such as Ph.D. MIT graduates and doesn't know a single person who has moved up more than 3 levels in the hierarchy. I suspect that some of these people tried Greene's methods and failed, but really, you don't want to be in the business of fighting an uphill battle against mathematics or statistics. How do you gain power in a corporation starting from the bottom? Mu.

If you are at the bottom of a hierarchy and have talent and wish to gain power then Greene's strategy is the worst strategy you could use in America. To gain power in America starting from nothing, you have to mint it yourself, by working for yourself, or else examine the questions of power and happiness more closely.

When you get down to it, Greene is really offering advice on happiness: he says, "[If you try to opt out of the game], this will only render you powerless, and powerlessness will make you miserable." His whole book is built on this assumption.

But what is happiness?

I believe that Greene follows his own advise rather than answering this question directly and honestly. In other words, he wrote a contentious book that would generate popular sales rather than answering the question plainly. It is a manifest truth that if you start out with stupid assumptions then you will fill your life with garbage and become unhappy. Thomas Jefferson said as much: "All experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."

To be happy requires that you master your insecurities, abolish the social forms which you have grown accustomed to, and gain power over yourself.

Greene dodges the question: he falls into the trap of insecurity and the ability of people to have power over each other; this is equated with happiness. He doesn't talk at all about gaining power over yourself. Greene certainly gives his target audience the answer that they want to hear about lying and cheating in corporations, but he doesn't give the true answer.

To gain power over yourself you need to decouple yourself from the mechanisms that place you in a position of slave-to-master. One simple way to gain power over yourself is to stop working. Another is to work for yourself. If you increase your income relative to the cost of living then you have also increased your power over yourself. Often this is best accomplished by moving elsewhere and taking a job that pays less.

If you wish to start a company then I would recommend Paul Graham's essays. If you wish to stop working then you may wish to read the works of Thoreau, D. JoAnne Swanson, or Bob Black. If you wish to gain a handle on how the social mechanisms of power work in our era then read a book about the internal structure of mass media. If you want to be sociable by reading Greene's book because it's popular then go ahead, but it will not educate you about having power over yourself, happiness, or the structure of power in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars A PHD crash course in social manipulation.......2007-06-07

In today's business world, to be naive and "play the nice guy and get along with everyone" will get you nowhere fast, and may very well get you crushed. Greene has written several best sellers on understanding and influencing social interaction, and this one is my personal favorite. Use or be used is a accurate summation of what you will learn here. Some of the insights are no less than profound. All of them at the very least will have you analyzing things that occurred in your past that you could have handled more effectively. The things that flew below the radar and bit your in the rear will be very clear to see after reading this book.

When you understand hidden intentions, thoughts, and desires people have when they speak to you, you can respond with what is best for you, as opposed to being influenced against your desires. Understanding the 48 laws and re-reading them over and over with accelerate your success no matter what field you are in.

You will see through bosses, brokers, and salesman in two seconds, as they push you with subtle aggressive hints, massage your ego, all to see how much you allow them to get away with.

1 out of 5 stars scripture of a demon.......2007-06-04

to be honest, this book is exactly what is wrong with society. This should be the book of how not to live your life. It is written, it seems, with bad intentions. I do not recomend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Power.......2007-06-03

Very poor book, if one used any of these concepts in the modern world I doubt they would work (actually I know they don't work).

The author seems to have no idea about the concept of accountability.

Mostly unethical, greedy, irresponsible, unaccountable ideas.

No modern examples, all from ancient China, Greece, Middle and Renaissance Italy, France, etc.

There is not much about the concept of power in this book.

Will finish it just to ensure I don't act or behave like any of these exmaples.

An extraordinary work by an extraordinary scholar, It teaches you how to get the best by the process of learning and by your ability to be part of the human kind. An essential book for each and every age.

3 out of 5 stars A difficult read.......2007-06-08

After reading an excellent review prior to purchase the book disappoints as it is written at a level that would appeal mainly to academics. One needs to sift through a heap of difficult reading to get to the few gems that the author reveals. It is clearly obvious that the author is an incredibly gifted researcher but the material doesn't 'reach' the average reader who I believe should be the target for the book. Academically excellent but fails to meet the target audience

1 out of 5 stars Cow plop!.......2007-05-28

You do not need to read this book. It says what's already been better said before and elsewhere. Yes, being able to synthesize vast amounts of information will be very useful in the 21st century. Yes, being able to be creative in interdisciplinary ways could give you an edge. Yes, current educational methods aren't that great at this and may stifle creativity. Any educator or student hoping for an edge by reading this self-aggrandizing piffle will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Future is Now.......2007-05-24

We are fascinated by this book. It describes accurately the "learning areas" available to humans all over the world and the great need to tap all of them to succeed in the future starting now!. My wife, Dr. Maria Elena Marroco has dedicated all her professional life trying to discover HOW to achieve the education that fosters the Five Minds of Mr. Gardner's. I joined her in her research in 1971. Finally, in 1990, we, actually, she, discovered how to do it. Unfortunately, school boards in the USA and other countries donot seem ready for this education yet. So we tried it with adults in all types of organizations with success. We would be thrilled to be able to talk to Mr. Howard Gardner and contribute, however little, with his endeavor. The book is everything we hoped to find in a book of this class.

For those who value the process of learning, the content between the hardcover is a gift in its barest meaning. I facilitate learning in a class in an academic environment in what the current world terminology would call - a 3rd world country. And from that context, thank you Mr Howard Gardner. What you wrote will be part of the journey of those who I will meet.

3 out of 5 stars Biased, but a good primer on business ethics.......2006-02-24

This book is a good primer on business ethics, and it would be even better if the writer / editors hadn't shown their bias with their selections of included material.

Business ethics theories evolve, just like any other social phenomenon; however, just because a theory is new doesn't make it right. Especially in an ethics book! The authors are clearly biased against big business, against small government, and against "shareholder management" theory.

Does this make them right or wrong? No. The only "wrong" committed is the bias itself.

As you read this book, just keep your critical thinking skills sharp and your eyes open.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical Compendium.......2002-07-20

This book is a critical reader, and it's probably the most highly used text in business ethics today. Those who reviewed this book negatively sound like people looking for a fun, non-academic overview of the field. If so, this book isn't it. These are articles published in top academic journals, edited for readability, by scholars who are addressing the fundamental issues in a wide range of topics. It's meant to expose the span of the field and still give students (not light readers) exposure to contemporary literature that touches on the most salient points. It's meant to be a starting point to deeper research in any given topic. As such, the book is a complete success. B & B do a great job (here as in other ethics compendiums) of providing a framework that makes it easy for a professor to expose her students to the field in one swoop. They do a fine editorial job, stripping the articles of padding, and they work hard to keep the offerings up to date (passing on older articles that are superceded by fresh insights that touch on contemporary challenges and technologies; look for something relating to the corporate scandals of this last year in the next edition). If you are a student looking for an overview on business ethics, this book is the correct starting point. If you are someone looking for light reading about corporate corruption, with illustrations and full-color photos, stick to People magazine.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Anthology.......2001-06-23

I really enjoyed this anthology, especially the section on sexual harassment. Some of the subjects were hard going, but, it was a good introduction to business ethics.

4 out of 5 stars In Defense of Beauchamp and Bowie.......2001-06-17

I teach business ethics at the college level, and have found Ethical Theory and Business to be very helpful. Basically, B and B attempt to do three things, or so it seems to me. First, they offer an introductory essay, covering some of the main distinctions in both meta-ethics (e. g. whether morality is objective or subjective) and normative ethics. This essay is the weakest part of the book, I think, because they seem to offer caracatures of most relativist leaning views (e. g. egoism), and do not adequately criticize Kantian moral philosophy. But even so, the essay does explain many useful distinctions in philosophical ethical thought. Second, B and B offer both classic readings in Business Ethics (e. g. Milton Friedman), as well as really up to date readings, by many of the leaders in the field (e. g. R. Edward Freeman). This is quite a good selection of readings, although they have omitted a few classic essays (like Galbraith's 'The Dependence Effect'), and a few subjects which might have been useful, such as the question of whether one can attribute moral agency to corporations at all. Even so, B and B include more than any course in Business Ethics could cover. Third, B and B provide a Web site with excersizes and instructor aids. Depending on how much one uses the Web, this may be helpful too. So generally speaking, although no anthology is perfect, Beauchamp and Bowie have put together an admirable collection. There is a seventh edition coming out soon. Perhaps that one will be as good as this one.

1 out of 5 stars This Book is Whack!!!.......2001-05-11

Ethical Theory and Business by Beauchamp & Bowie is the worst academic book I have ever been required to read. I agree with the reader from Minnesota that this book is very dry and boring and if I could give this book zero stars I would. All of the chapters in the book do not flow together very well since this book is very unorganized and is nothing more than a collection of narrative articles. The book does not have an index or any illustrations in it and the companion website to the book [stinks]. I do not think I learned anything about business ethics from reading this book nor did I find the information in it helpful for me in my life. After I finished reading this book, I felt like throwing it away, but instead I sold mine back to the bookstore. So if you want to learn about business ethics and are not required to purchase this book for a class, do not purchase this book.
