1 out of 5 stars egregious security violation.......2007-06-25

This product requires administrator privilege in order to get program updates from the website while running Windows Vista. This is outrageous. As administrator they can disable your privacy and security protocols (while looking at your financial data). This is shocking and lazy behavior for Nolo. They should have designed the program updates to work with network security prompts, same as every other responsible software company. I suggest anyone using this product unplug themselves from the internet while working with it and uninstall it when done. Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars It does what it needs to do........2007-06-15

If you take the time to read the information and follow the instructions carefully, this will do exactly what it's supposed to do. Great document generator.

5 out of 5 stars Willmaker Plus 2007 Very Impressive.......2007-05-21

I am very impressed with this product. The 500-page book alone provides a massive, detailed, practical, easy-to-read, and extremely helpful guide to the world of estate-planning legal documents. Just reading the book was an awesome self-education experience for me. Then, by firing up the software, I am walked step-by-step through the process of creating a will (or any number of additional legal documents) in a very easy, logical manner. For the person who desires to create a will, or any of the other legal documents covered, I highly recommend this product. It stands head and shoulders above any other product I have seen.

    5 out of 5 stars Simplicity at it's finest!.......2007-05-17

Since the more comprehensive reviewers here have already covered the features of Willmaker Plus 2007, I will only add a little opinion and a heep of praise to Quicken, for teaming up with Nolo in making this incredibly easy to use yet powerful program.

I must admit that I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I was able to create a simple Will without even opening the book because of the very easy to use step by step format. Legal jargon is explained brilliantly in laymans terms. This program is truly idiot proof!

Wills, Powers of Attorney for health care & finances along with other legal documents are the most important yet often neglected documents a person must deal with in life. Becoming incapacitated or dying without these documents in place can leave your loved ones with a real legal nightmare.

Completing my Will & Powers of Attorney and putting all of my important papers like deeds, titles, financial statements and insurance policies, in one place (known to loved ones) has given me tremendous peace of mind in knowing that my loved ones will have a much easier time resolving all of the legal matters if I become incapacitated or when I die.

5 out of 5 stars Great product, just go to the notary, or have friends!.......2007-05-13

I have created a Will and a living will with this handy program. The book that comes with it is quite extensive, but the instructions are also viewed with each page you create. It guides you through the process and is really easy. The only problem is, when you are done with the document, you actually need to take action, and have someone witness your signature, and you need to have some documents notarized. It is a process you must do, or some of the documents you create are useless. Don't be lazy like me, get it done, and forget about it! In addition to wills and estate planning, it also has common legal documents, like things for pet sitters, credit history requests, and authorizations for temporary guardianships for minors. It is quite the package!

5 out of 5 stars A difficult job made do-able.......2007-06-09

It is more fun to eat live snails than to sit down and do trusts and wills, not to mention the dreaded Advanced Directive.

Everyone puts off this very necessary chore because they know that going to an attorney is expensive and that all this is necessary because of death, a subject we avoid when possible.

Now there are many software programs that promise to make it possible for many people to do this work at home and without the expense of an attorney. Be aware, though, that attorneys say that people trying to do it themselves can make expensive mistakes and that the fee for professional services is money well spent.

I suspect that many people with uncomplicated estates can probably do ok with a software program, but that complicated estates really need an attorney. The question of what is fairly simple and what is complicated can only be answered by the individual.

Even if you have doubts about doing it yourself, it makes sense to get a program and do it anyway. You will know the kind of questions you have to answer and generally get an idea of the process. Then you can go to an attorney with some backround that will make the process easier, maybe saving an hour or three of expensive attorney time.

The Orman program is heavily advertised and Suze herself is kind of a celebrity. It is also reasonably priced and the advertisements seemed realistic. I went with Suze and successfully filled everything out, got the appropriate forms witnessed and notarized and copies sent to relatives, doctors and hospitals. Felt a lot better afterward as I am sure most people do.

A will is like having a colonoscopy. Everyone knows they should have one, but put it off as long as possible. I was forced into action because I was facing a serious time in the hospital and thought that if I left feet first, that my wife and kids would have a terrible time dealing with stuff a will would make easier. All turned out well, but I am really glad I did the paperwork and do not have to think about it unless things change.

The advanced directive, in case some people don't know, is a legal document that allows a hospital to cut off life support when you are brain dead in case your spouse is not available to give the word. This is not an uncommon occurrence as you could both be dead or incapacitated in a crash, for example. You can be free to go without interference from politicians who think they can raise the dead or from relatives who can't make the decision. Doctors know when it is time.

The Orman program is probably about as simple as it can be, but it deals with legalities, life and death, money and real estate and other property. That is all hard stuff. Attorneys will likely charge close to $2000 to do this because it takes hours of work. So, it is not an easy even for professionals. I managed to complete everything in about five hours. Those that have used tax software will find the process familiar.

Suze gives you stuff to read and also does a voice-over in some cases. Other experts also chime in now and then. I thought this was going to be annoying, but actually found it to be useful. I do suggest earphones or decent speakers if you are forced to operate in a noisy environment.

In California, at least, some of the forms need to be witnessed and notarized. The witnesses cannot be beneficiaries, so you have to get two strangers to sign some ominous documents for someone they do not know. I was lucky to find a couple in the hair salon next door to the notary. This is not the fault of Orman, but still you have to line people up. You might call the notary for advice. Stupid requirement.

There are multiple forms, several pages each. You need to make copies for relatives, your doctor and hospitals. That adds up to a lot of copies and a lot of paper that needs to be accurately collated. I suggest you get a stapler and a bunch of manila mailers that are addressed.

You also need cover letters. For example, the copy of the advanced directive that goes to your doctors should have a cover letter explaining that you are sending the directive so it will be in their files in case the need should arise to use it some day.

I also emailed my relatives and told them their will and directive copies were coming and what my general expectations were. I guess it is more traditional to keep it a secret until the end. Depends, I suppose.

Oh, and one of the forms is a narrative that details the disposition of your property. For example, you could say that aunt Mary gets your collection of pornographic statues, Uncle Bill gets the tv and so on.

So, it took me all day to complete the program, get witnesses and notary, collate and mail everything. That is about as fast as possible I think. Afterward, I felt relieved and accomplished. I had more than one drink in celebration.

There is nothing as nice as getting nagging odious tasks done. And the colonoscopy saved my life, so there.

I gave Suze five stars. I have not compared her program to any of the others. The legal requirements are the same and I figure Orman is in a position to hire competent legal and technical people. There is no way to know if everything will go smoothly for my heirs. One could hire an attorney to look it over and that shouldn't take too long.

The program does a good job of guiding you through a complex procedure. You still have to make decisions, of course, but the fact that this all went smoothly and everything printed was very impressive. This was done on a Mac, which is good since programs like this are usually ported to Windows first. Now that Macs also run Windows makes it even more likely to work for you on any computer.

I am impressed with this program and recommend it. I doubt that there is any way to make a will/trust/directive program any easier and I trust that the people behind it are competent. So, five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Will and Trust Kit.......2007-05-07

Overall the Will and Trust kit is very easy to use. It is a bit glitchy on the Mac, but when I switched to the PC I was able to produce all the documents I needed. What I like most is that after creating the Trust document, the program walked me through funding the trust. It does not matter how much you know about Wills and Trusts, all you need to know is who you want to get what when you die. As a bonus you get the Living Will document. This is something I wish my father had when he was sick and finally died.

3 out of 5 stars not enough info about what this software can offer.......2007-04-04

The software does not give enough info about what this software is capable of doing. For example, I found out in the middle of interview questions that the software can not do AB trust. THis makes this software totally useless.

5 out of 5 stars Suze Orman WILL & TRUST KIt.......2007-04-03

I bought this CD and I was amazed how easy it was for me to do. If you want to get your Private Matters in Order before you die. This is the one I would recommend. Suze explains everything that you need to do. So I would highly recomend this to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Read It THEN Follow up!.......2007-03-21

Good product, sound advice. Only as effective as the time you put into it and careful tending and follow-up on hints, advice, etc. Couple it with Suze Orman's website, andn you have a lot of information and help.

I thought this was a text book I was buying, same author and title. It is, in fact, just a vocabulary list, NOT in alphabetical order, and often repeats words from chapter to chapter. Otherwise, it is blank lined paper. I am using it to take notes in for my law class.

5 out of 5 stars Cuting planning costs.......2007-01-19

This book is a must for senions who need to understand the ramifacations of nursing home costs and related retirement issues. Attorney costs as high as $200.00 per hour and or flat fees of thousands of dollars, cause seniors to procasinate from getting their financial house in order. This book does a good job of explaining the need for proper planning and the ease in which it can be done withour having an attorney do ever phase, and prepare every document. Yet it does point out the need for an attorney in properly preparing the more difficult documents. I highly recoment this book for seniors and others also.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Visit Your Attorney without Being Informed.......2006-09-28

As an estate planner and attorney, I know that presenting this kind of information in an easy-to-grasp way isn't, well . . . easy. But Michael Palermo has done it. In Crash Course in Estate Planning, he explains everything from wills to planning for children to protecting your investment interests. The fact that the AARP endorses The Essential Guide is a great indication of the value of the information. The "Hints" and "Warnings" that Michael gives throughout the book could only have come from a real life practicing estate attorney who has faced these problems with clients many times. In addition to having an estate planning practice, Michael is also a Certified Financial Planner and the combination of wisdom garnered from his financial background and legal background serves his readers well. Michael knows which issues take a little more effort to understand, and he provides more detail accordingly. This is a great book for anyone who is preparing to tackle the estate planning process. Palermo provides clear and direct answers to very difficult questions. I highly recommend his book. Be advised though, if you read the book you may, at least in some areas, find you know more than your attorney!

3 out of 5 stars This book is outdated........2006-06-21

It is difficult to understand how this book got the endorsement of AARP. It has only had three reviews and the last one was in October of 2005. Being published in 2004 puts the information behind the times, especially if you live in California. As the author of the book "Everything A Baby Boomer Should Know," published only weeks ago, I think AARP should reevaluate what it recommends to us Baby Boomers as a reliable resource to educate our need to know how the system works.

5 out of 5 stars The best advice.......2005-10-28

This is not a "how to" book. It is an exhaustive discussion of all of the options people have in planning their estates. This includes what can go wrong and how to avoid these problems.

It covers all of the possible ways to minimize taxes for your estate and your heirs.

    The writing style is concise.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have If You Know Nothing About Estate Planning.......2005-08-15

This is the second book I purchased to help me gain some understanding about estate planning before talking to an attorney. It has been extremely helpful in giving info on many aspects of estate planning. I even took it to the trust dept at my local bank when talking to them about trust accounts. The trust adviser was very impressed with my knowledge and the level of planning I had already done and commented that this looked like a good reference source. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know about estate planning.

Still have no idea whether book will be arriving in mail sometime this year, or whether order has been cancelled. Web-site will not let me cancel order.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book By A Great Teacher.......2003-10-19

Gerry Beyer was my "Wills and Trusts" professor in law school. He was my favorite teacher, and the favorite of many of my fellow law students, for several reasons: first of all, he had an excellent command of the law. There wasn't an aspect of it he didn't know. Secondly, he taught in a clear and concise manner. Many of my law professors were "hide-the-ball" types: their clumsy use of the Socratic method left students lost and confused. When Professor Beyer lectured, you knew exactly what point he was trying to make. You didn't have to guess at it. Finally, he was a warm, friendly, humorous guy - very approachable and not at all intimidating, a rare trait in a lawyer. This book is everything Professor Beyer is: knowledgeable, approachable, and clear. And as a rookie attorney in the field of wills, trusts, and estate planning, this is the book I turn to first and foremost as a reference. That said, I believe this book is most appropriate for law students, paralegals, practicing attorneys, and others who need a serious grasp of wills, trusts, and estate planning law. Those who want a simple, cursory introduction may find themselves overwhelmed by all the legal jargon - as was mentioned by a previous reviewer.

it's a good book but you should keep in hand a law dictionary.

I have several estate planning books...the "how to" type and they are great. This is the book you need to read before you start filling in the blanks. I wish my parents had read this book. It would have saved my family relationships. This book gives you the basic information you need before drawing up your trust. Protect your beneficiaries and prevent family conflict by reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars So good I bought 4 extra copies for friends.......2007-01-19

Estate planning is so important if you don't want your son in law running off with half your estate in the event of your kid's divorce. This book was a great asset to me ... and a real eyeopener as to what can happen at the reading of your will if you haven't equalized everything. the author even gives you his phone number that readers can call and ask questions free. The book is so good I bought 4 extra copies for friends.

    5 out of 5 stars Ditto of "janimac's on April 11, 2006".......2006-12-28

As strange as this may sound, my review is identical to janimac's on April 11, 2006 (except I merely *told* 3 friends about it).

5 out of 5 stars The answer to my prayers.......2006-04-12

What a relief!!! I finally found a book that would help me help my parent plan their estate! Thank you so much for your wonderful, easy to read book. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down! This book has practical, real world examples of inheritance planning issues and considers the "human" side of inheritances. It's a must read if you need to do estate planning. I just came back and bought three copies to give to my friends. It's the best gift I could possibly give them!

5 out of 5 stars Can prevent heartache among your children.......2005-11-27

This is an extremely well-written book on the financial and emotional guidelines for estate planning. My wife's father committed several of the oversights highlighted in this book,
and today she and her brothers no longer speak to one another.
Believe me - you don't know your children until you see what they do with their inheritance. Anyone over 50 with a modest estate would benefit immensely from reading this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Suze Orman's Protection Portfolio.......2006-08-31

I found this product extremely disappointing and not worth my time or money for several reasons: 1) the audio is condescending and difficult to avoid, why not just let me read it if that is my preference? 2) you can't print out the tutorial pages so you have to go back and forth to refer to them again, which can sometimes be several screens back, 3) you cannot enlarge the screen image to fit your computer screen or move it to the side if you want to open another program to get information to fill out the Orman requirements. Being able to enlarge the screen would be a great benefit for me as I have poor eyesight-- which is the very reason I bought a 20" screen, 4) Suze Orman is on every screen. She's attractive but is spending too much time promoting herself over developing a good product, 5) you can not change the typeface from Courier (Times Roman would be nice) or change the page margins. The final document looks like it was produced in the 1920s. 6) when you print out the draft documents there are inexplicable holes in some of the paragraphs. They are aware of this problem (once they finally answered my email inquiry) but don't seem to think it is important to fix before releasing the product for sale. Why should I have to get to the end of the program before finding this out? 7) you can't continue to the next screen without hitting the "continue" button. Give me a break and let me press my return button instead of having to move my cursor around. The whole program seems to be a protoype to test on us unsuspecting customers.

2 out of 5 stars It messed up my printer.......2006-07-26

The CD looks okay, and then when you go print the documents it completely messes up my printer, to the point that I wasted an entire new package of paper and still cannot print anything on my printer.

1 out of 5 stars Get the Suze Orman Will & Trust kit instead.......2005-03-10

Dear Amazon Customers: Are you surprised that I myself have given my own product a one star rating? Dont be for you know I am always honest with you. Please be aware that at the time when this product was created (which was years ago now) that at that time it was great! It was the best the technology could offer at a price that everyone could afford. However since that time I have totally been able to 1000% improve it with the latest version which is under the title Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit. I do not want you to waste your hard earned money on this version when for the same amount of money you can have the latest and the greatest. The new Will and Trust Kit answers all the criticisms in the reviews on this page and even more that needed to be addressed. This old version is browser based so you cannot save your information for security reasons, the new version on the WILL and TRUST KIT is on a CD ROM that can be downloaded onto your computer. This allows you to then give the disc to a friend or family member for them to download etc. So one kit can serve the entire family. The Will and Trust Kit not only has the CD ROM but it also has ten electronic books on the CD itself along with automatic updates of all the forms, so when changes happen you can for free get what you need to know. The new kit allows you to simply answer questions and it picks the forms you most likely should have and then fills in the information from your answers directly into those forms. The old version does not do any of this. The Will and Trust kit has the trust lawyer Janet Dobrovolny ( my trust lawyer who created this kit) verbally taking you through your forms via the audio format and you also can print out the directions and or read and listen to them on screen. There are over 50 forms on the new version, over 90 weblinks and 15 calculators. Please note: You DO NEED internet access to make the most of the updating process of the new Will and Trust Kit. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is I want you to get the most for your money and this old version of the Protection Portfolio, the page you are currently on, will not give you that but Suze Ormans Will and Trust Kit will. I would love if Amazon took this old version off all together and we have asked and asked them to do so, but that is not how they work so what to do, but now you know what I think. Thank you for taking time to read this. Suze Orman

1 out of 5 stars Good book, Poor Software.......2004-11-23

While the information in the book was informative, I'm surprised at the poor quality of the software used to generate forms. The software does not allow you to electronically save (And modify) the forms - you must print them immediately. Information does not transfer from one form to the next, you must retype information endlessly. Was most surprised that someone of her prominence wouldn't seek out a better software vendor.

"Please take the necessary steps today to protect your tomorrows." ~Suze Orman

I was amazed at how much you can get these days for twenty dollars. This packet has one book filled with form samples and information, A CD-ROM with forms for various documents and two instructional CDs.

Suze Orman has created this protection portfolio so you can easily create a Will, a Revocable Living Trust or even a Cohabitation Agreement. She explains the most important documents that everyone must have and then explains how compiling these documents ahead of time will help prevent worry and stress if the unexpected occurs.

You will find forms and websites for the following information:

    Credit Report/Card Documents
    Important Personal Documents
    Home Ownership Documents
    Personal Insurance Documents
    Social Security Documents
    Retirement Plan Documents
    Investment Documents
    Estate Planning Documents

The book is divided up into 11 main chapters. The list of how long to keep various documents was very interesting. Suze shows you how to get rid of financial clutter all while organizing your documents. Then, she shows you how to get credit reports or file complaints with a Credit Bureau. Chapter three delves into Personal Documents. Here you can collect documents listed in the Important Personal Documents list. Chapter four deals with Home Ownership.

Then on to documents about automobiles, recreational vehicles and boats. Chapter six delves into the area of Personal Insurance Policies and Records. Chapter seven explains social security statements and cards. Chapter eight explains Retirement. Investments, Estate Planning Documents and Tax records complete this comprehensive book.

In the back of the book you will find a unique "Protection Portfolio Filing System." You can order additional items for about the same price as this portfolio.

    Other features include:

      Book Description

The first overview of the revolutionary advertising techniques and media needed to successfully reach today's consumer.

Twenty years ago an advertiser could reach eighty percent of the American population with just three television commercials. Today it takes 150. Advertising is suffering because of the sheer amount of it, the lack of innovation within traditional advertising formats, and the power that media fragmentation and technology give to consumers to tune out the noise.

The new buzzwords are guerrilla, stealth, ambush, buzz, viral, grassroots, wildfire, and ambient. This book is the first to harness them into an integrated communications approach, as Tom Himpe explains and illustrates:
      • the four driving forces for getting close to the consumer: be personal; go where the competition isn't; make the brand invisible; be unpredictable;
      • the eight techniques—from consumer involvement to harnessing the power of the senses—for employing these driving forces, illustrated with campaigns from across the world;
      • the four types of campaign that make use of this new knowledge. 435 color illustrations.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good overview, though lengthy.......2007-02-07

I bought this book after realizing there was no way I'd have time to outline for all my courses last semester. The beginning gives a good short overview. For more specific details and explanations you can look at the rest of the text. It was especially helpful because it was keyed to the casebook used in my course.

3 out of 5 stars Almost too comprehensive.......2007-01-09

Oddly enough, I feel that this outline was almost too comprehensive to be useful for studying for my T&E law school final exam. The detailed outline is close to 300 pages long, and attempts to address every possible iteration of the law of Trusts and Estates, including common/federal and state specific law, the Uniform Trust Code, the Wills Act and other areas. In my opinion, this shotgun approach made weeding out the law applicable in my area from the other chaff extremely difficult. If the outline were organized in a different fashion, i.e., where how the issues in this subject were collectively addressed by the form of law (e.g., all federal law issues grouped together, all common law issues grouped together, discussion of UTC grouped together etc.) this book would have been eminently more useful to me. The sad thing is, the content of this outline is extremely good and detailed. Its organization, however, makes learning that content more of a chore than it has to be.

      4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Wills & Trusts Students.......2006-01-12

I usually don't use hornbooks, but I was stumped with all the Wills and Trusts material. I initially got the Examples & Explanations book, which was a HORRIBLE MISTAKE. It lacks even the most basic concepts. I then went for Emanuel's, which was keyed to our textbook, and it was a dream come true, especially the mini briefs.
