Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Book Description

This book was conceived by Jonathan Safran Foer, Dave Eggers, Nicole Krauss, and the staff of McSweeney's as a way to bring over a hundred authors together to promote progressive causes in the November 2004 election. An imagining of what a dictionary might look like about thirty years hence, when the world's problems are solved and our current president is a distant memory, the book is by turns funny, outraged, utopian, and dyspeptic. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to a mix of political organizations to support progressive candidates in the upcoming elections.

Over 150 writers contributed to the book, including: Stephen King, Robert Olen Butler, Glen David Gold, Richard Powers, Susan Straight, Sarah Vowell, Billy Collins, C.K. Williams, Colson Whitehead, Donald Antrim, Jonathan Franzen, Edwidge Danticat, Edward Hirsch, Joyce Carol Oates, Katha Pollitt, Padgett Powell, Paul Auster, Anthony Swofford, Julia Alvarez, Susan Choi, Jim Shepard, Aimee Bender, and Art Spiegelman.

Released in partnership with Barsuk Records, the book will include a CD compilation, with exclusive songs by the best musicians working. Among them: David Byrne, R.E.M., Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Flaming Lips, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes, They Might Be Giants, Nada Surf, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book, lovely CD, fantastic cause.......2004-10-08

Not only did I enjoy this book both for straight-out reading as well as random dipping, but I've bought it for three different friends AND I've purchased more copies as insurance for the looming gift-giving season. It really is the perfect book for every shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Hopeful.......2004-10-04

This book is a positive contribution to our current state of disunion in the United States. Yes, there are entries that look back at the Shrub administration with contempt, but others look at a positive future where we overcame the myopia, nepotism, and greed of the bushies. It is positive in itself that the future is there to write the entries. I would have given it 4 stars, but a reviewer that obviously did not read it compared it to Ann Coulter and only gave it one star. I am canceling out that vote. Thanks are owed to Foer, Eggers, et al. for their quality writing, work, and discerning eyes.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2004-09-28

I've never read a book quite like this. It's delightful, philosophical, inventive, poignant, unique, funny. The "dictionary" format lets you read it a paragraph at a time or in long stretches; a perfect book for the crapper or a long plane ride. Most importantly, the book reminds us there is a future. All we need now is a more useful present. If we are lucky, this book will help us get there.

5 out of 5 stars unique, fun.......2004-08-27

This is a really unique book. I kept hearing about how it was supposed to be really funny, and some of it is funny, but a lot of the entries are philosophical, or just artsy writing, or fun to think about in a science fiction kind of way; some of them aren't really political at all. Though I don't agree with conservative politics I don't like personal, mean attacks on people with different opinions and I was happy to find that overall, this book isn't caustic. With a few exceptions. Mostly its just fun, and the $$ is for a good cause.

It also contains some interesting extras like the Declaration of Independence and a charting of the evolution of Indo-European language families (I don't want to give a lot of stuff away). It's definitely worth having, I would like to give it 4 1/2 stars. But, the CD that comes with the book is truly a jewel and it definitely deserves 5 stars.

The CD contains several folksy type songs, several good rock songs, a couple of punk songs, a good r&b song, an interesting a capella song, and a remake of a real 19th century campaign ditty.

5 out of 5 stars Ha ha ha sob.......2004-08-21

What a funny book, but also sad. This is exactly the kind of thing that will make people think about this year's issues without giving them headaches. Superb work generally, but I especially like Sarah Vowell, Robert Olen Butler, and Ben Greenman. I hope this has the desired effect.

In Dictionary of the Future, authors Faith Popcorn and Adam Hanft provide a fascinating "speak preview" of the words and terms that capture tomorrow's innovations and forces of change: DNA'd -being bounced from a relationship because your genes don't measure up. Karaoke Managers-those who get ahead by lip-synching the wisdom of others.Mannies-male nannies, who are growing in numbers. Admirenvy-the common condition of admiring something-or someone--and being envious at the same time. Pharmacogenomics-the process of creating customized prescription drugs. Our revved-up world isn't just changing faster than ever before, it's creating new words and new language at breakneck speed. Now, Faith Popcorn, the futurist and trend authority who is known as the Nostradamus of marketing, and Adam Hanft, author, business strategist and media critic, have created the first-ever Dictionary of the Future, a thought-provoking, entertaining, and richly informative collection of hundreds of new, emerging, and just-invented words and terms. While traditional dictionaries wait for language to achieve familiarity, Dictionary of the Future is there first, enabling readers to identify the latest trends across all dimensions of the culture. Turn its pages and you see the future taking shape, word by word, idea by idea. Organized by familiar categories such as the arts, corporate America, education, health and technology--and by provocative rubrics such as "New Behaviors" and "New Structures"-Dictionary of the Future includes newly minted language such as: Yogurt Cities--places with "active cultures" where baby boomers will retire Chimeraplasty--molecular messengers that will repair damaged genes Free-Range Children--new generation of kids raised without over-programming Dictionary of the Future is an extraordinary advance look at tomorrow. More than fascinating reading, more than a treat for anyone interested in what the future holds, word wise and otherwise.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been much, much better.......2006-03-07

I'm a dictionary junkie, especially those that delve into etymologies and usages. Who better to compile a speculative dictionary of terms on the edge of societal evolution than Popcorn -- whose name I've always loved. As a marketing guru, she has a pretty good record -- not perfect, but good -- of identifying up-and-coming trends; _The Popcorn Report_, now more than a decade old, is still a valuable look at a likely future. And there are any number of interesting trends identified in this volume -- like "wind farms" and "the death divide" and "starter castles" -- that have solidified just in the past few years. Though the actual pop phrases may have turned out differently, like "McMansions" instead of the third example above. Still, this book isn't as fascinating as it ought to be. It's rather dry and nerveless with very little of Popcorn's usual brio.

1 out of 5 stars Faith Popcorn is a joke, but..........2005-04-07

The amazing thing about this book, and for that matter any book written by Faith Popcorn, is that she has somehow managed to successfully wring a career out of writing down any ridiculous thought that comes into her head and then compiling those ideas into a book and trying to fabricate legitimacy by asserting with pseudo-certainty that these things WILL happen. I believe her secret is that, along with all of her hare-brained ideas, she always throws in a few ideas that, while still somewhat in their infancy, have nevertheless already presented themselves and been written about. Thus she creates the illusion of correctly "predicting" trends. I have to give her credit though for being shrewd. As I said, she has managed to create her own little niche and built her "trend spotter, future predictor" house of cards on the fact that she has written books about them, so she MUST be an expert. I consider the woman a joke, but then again, she gets the last laugh all the way to the bank.

2 out of 5 stars Very Short Shelf-Life.......2002-03-04

To keep it current this book would have made a better ongoing periodical. Popcorn must reside in a bubble, many of these terms and phrases were created out of whole cloth and just plain silly. I doubt the library will even carry this book as it will be outdated in short order.

5 out of 5 stars This is a grin and accept it book........2002-02-16

I really did enjoy this and decided not to sell this book, it's a definite keeper. There is considerable more here than future jargon, substantial details are included of our immediate future workings based on superior foresight of current conditions. Yes, read this book, it will give you added delivery in your chat when the time comes.
If you are truly interested in future workings with this well balanced humor and realism read a phenom, Karl Mark Maddox's SB 1 or God.

2 out of 5 stars MIXED BAG.......2002-01-21

I suspect some of these reviewers gave themselves five stars for finishing the book. I don't know how one reviews this collection of terms. All I can say is here is a mixed bag of terms, half of which should never have survived the cut. Way too many are already in current usage, (e.g., lucid dreaming, mother-of-all, rage, brownfields), way too many will never become generally used because they are nearly unpronounceable (e.g., participlaytion, bacterroria), others add nothing to existing terminology (e.g., boatominiums or floatominiums for house boats; relationshopping for relation shopping or relationship shopping--Is one very long word better than two short ones?) and there are far too many compounds, words strung together arbitrarily (e.g., socially irresponsible investing, self unfulfilling prophecies, driving Miss Daisy syndrome). Are they patronizing the reader?

I would like to have seen the www.web sites included in the index--there were at least fifty of them relied on and cited. In fact, if the truth were known, the internet was the principal source of half of the thousand terms listed. I would have liked to see the list cut in half, using only the most interesting terms (actual new terms, not those just abbreviated or strung together). Also the authors organized the words into 35 idiosyncratic chapters (e.g., Figures of Speech; Fear, Frustration & Desire; New Behaviors). I would have liked to see half that number of Chapters (e.g., ego surfing was placed in New Behaviors instead of in Internet or Computers. Three sections: Computers, Internet and Technology might have been combined into one).

As to the sections that tried to predict which new terms might catch on--really only a useless guessing game. These sections added very little to the book (e.g., fashion will become fash just as glamour has become glam is no doubt inevitable since both www.....com and www.....com are URL domain names now for sale on the internet). Dropping the last 3 letters to a word merely indicates how lazy some internet users are becoming. There is nothing new in knowing that.

5 out of 5 stars Science and philosophy, an intelligently written book.......2002-07-16

I was skeptical when a friend of mine gave me this book for my birthday, but after reading it, I realized that so many of my dreams have fostered my own life's progress. Ms. Andreasen has a keen eye for detail and I was glad to find a down-to-earth approach to the topic of dreaming. I particularly loved the chapter on science and the study of sleep. Being a psychologist, I have followed Hobson's work for years and was glad to see it included in this book. Hats off to the author.

I love this book. Suz Andreasen has written a useful and intelligent book on dreams. This is a book that I can use again and again to understand and work with my dreams. I love the exercises and I can't wait to go to sleep each night. I love how the author draws parallels between the concepts of aspirations and dreaming sleep. This is a book for everyone who wants more from their life and their future.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a dream come true!.......2001-09-09

Finally, a dream book that is useful! Suz Andreasen has once again proved that spiritual and creative potential is for everyone. This book showed me the power of my dreams and how they can work for me. As an artist, I found it enlightening, powerful, and down to earth. The dictionary is handy and filled with universal symbolism from every culture and religion. It's a book that anyone can pick up and not only read, but also go back to again and again. I highly recommend it.

      Book Description

The twentieth century was for the most part an unfolding of the nineteenth, but the twenty-first century is a time of open-ended transitions. This remarkable book attempts to provide a cartography of the contemporary global framework of knowledge and culture that can tell us where we've arrived in the new millennium, and where we are headed. The Future of Knowledge & Culture is a dictionary of ideas, comprising brief articles from perceptive commentators on subjects ranging from Bollywood, cloning, consumerism, and corruption to refugees, sanctions, water, and WMDs-in other words, on all things that are likely to be of significance in the years ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Transits.......2004-05-15

An astrologer friend of mine recommended this book when I was starting to learn about transits, and it really is one of the very best on the outer planets, including Jupiter. Robert Hand's "Planets in Transit" is the classic text, but Braha takes you deeper in and doesn't hold any punches. He tells it to you straight when you need to hear it.

For instance, with Neptune opposite my Moon, Hand writes that it "may cause difficulties with female relatives." Braha, though, writes three sentences on just that topic, including how "one's mother may become unstable, frail, or physically ill," which is exactly what happened.

The last quarter of the book, "Desas of the East," is Hindu astrology, and I haven't yet takent the time to check that out.

        Book Description

Kiswahili is the fastest growing African language. The author, Professor of Kiswahili at Egerton University, here describes this growth and examines Kiswahili as an alternative to European languages in East Africa and as an international language for Africa. He covers the controversial theories of the origination and development of Kiswahili, the effects of the use of English as the language of instruction in Kenya and the status of Kiswahili in trade, religion and politics in East and Central Africa, within a continental context. A country analysis of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda reveals the spread of Kiswahili as a mother tongue and second language; its use in creative writing and music, and its status in language policies. The argument for Kiswahili as the language of Africa is also discussed.

            Book Description

Is the world en route to becoming a linguistic colony of the United States? Or is this dramatic view an exaggeration, and there is no danger to linguistic diversity at all? The German language is at the center of an intensive debate on this issue. Its position in the world is under increasing pressure due to the growing importance of (American) English as the language of globalization.

The articles in this volume deal with the national and international position of German in relation to English, language policies, the future of German as a language of science, German in the USA, and the intellectual and aesthetic dimensions of encountering a foreign language. They present critical assessments addressing the dangers for the future of languages other than English, as well as positions which perceive the growing importance of English as a challenge and resource rather than as a threat.

            Key features:
            - reknown editors
            - famous contributors, among them Wolfgang Thierse (president of the German Bundestag), Peter Eisenberg (involved in the German spelling reform), David Crystal (famous linguist), representatives of the Goethe institute
            - current and politically controversial topic: how does globalization influence the diversity of languages
