Henry Weingarten's Investing By The Stars: Using Astrology In The Financial Markets show how to use astrology to make better investing and market trading decisions; how to buy and sell stocks based on astrological positions; how to utilize astrology to predict market timing, market psychology, and market-affecting geopolitical events; and how to integrate astrology into conventional market analysis. 4 out of 5 stars Not a review of the book, but a tale about the author...............2005-08-26

Henry Weingarten is quite the character, and he was a fairly big influence on my later career as a trader. When I met him in the late 80's he was the head of the New York Astrology Center, but he ran a computer consulting service on the side. I was an independent computer consultant/programmer working as a subcontractor. Now here comes the good part.....when I went to my initial interview for a consultant position, instead of looking at my resume for even a second, Henry asked for my birth date and time! He then put the date and time into his computerized astrological program and ran his chart on me. I was amazed and a little amused as Henry and his partner read my chart, and offered me a position. Apparently something they saw in my chart impressed them enough to give me a job....but they wouldn't tell me what those characteristics were!

Soon after I began working with Henry, I would come into his office each morning, and find him with his portable Quotron attached to his hand, punching in figures and symbols into his computerized astrological-financial program, and barking orders to his broker on the phone! As I worked I made mental notes of Henry's trades. When I got home at night I would check the WSJ to see how he did. In most of his trading, Henry was doing well. By and large, the stocks he purchased went up and his short calls would usually fall! I started copying some of his long calls on my own, but never in such large quantities. Maybe a hundred or two of Electronic Arts, etc. I don't know how he did it, but according to my calculations, Henry consistently made money, and therefore I made money as well!

Granted, during the incredible bull run of the 90's, and before the tech meltdown of 2000, just about EVERY trader was making money! I have not read Henry's book, and therefore am unable to offer any recommendation, but it seems there is some method to his trading. My advice is watch the technical indicators, keep an eye on overall market sentiment, and develop a strong gut instinct for talented companies. Good luck......

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept!.......2000-12-28

I found the book interesting, you have to understand astrology to make it work. A friend of mine who is an astrologer astrologyguidance com site, has done astrology stock predictions with good results, so the concept works.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERSTANDING FINANCIAL ASTROLOGY.......1999-05-09

This book is written by an Internationally recognized financial astrologer who over time has predicted correctly some of the most major events that have occurred such as the Asian crisis of 1997 which had dramatic affects on world sharemarkets.I personaly also subscribe to his email service and have found it invaluable.Mr Weingarten has always said that astrology along with fundamentals and technicals drive markets and he suggests people make their own decisions. By incorporating his system I have become a more successful trader and welcome a second book.

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF B.S. I HAVE EVER SEEN!.......1999-04-03

This book provided no useful information/stratigies what so ever and I have lost over $20,000 from INVESTING BY THE STARS! Please spend your money on a Dr. Seuss book and learn how to make words rhyme!

5 out of 5 stars An outsiders review of Investing.......1997-12-24

I would like to extend my appreciation of Henry Weingarten's book, "Investing by the Stars."

The book combines factual financial information with astrology, which adds a fascinating philosophical perspective to an otherwise mundane profession. In these days of computerized research and financial programs, his unique approach situates the often perilous trade of Investing within the high reaches of the cosmos. Thankfully, from the perspective of this lay reader, the book was quite an interesting read.

I recommend this book to both serious investors and friends of Astrology!

In Secrets of the Investment All-Stars, Kenneth A. Stern prods nine of the country's best investors into sharing their methods and philosophies for success. Stern profiles value investor Mario Gabelli; money managers Marty Zweig and Louis Navellier; Don Phillips, chief of Morningstar; John Bogle, founder of Vanguard; William O'Neil, owner of Investor's Business Daily; Ron Elijah of Robertson Stephens; Foster Friess of the Brandywine Fund; and Harry Markowitz, winner of the Nobel Prize for portfolio theory. Each succeeds on Wall Street with a very distinct investing style, writes Stern, a personal-finance expert. Zweig, for example, buys stocks based on his forecasts of the overall market's direction. Navellier uses a fully automated computer system to pick companies. Elijah, on the other hand, focuses on business and social trends. Gabelli looks for a catalyst--some special event--to drive a stock. Despite their differences, they share a tendency to adhere to their investing principles through good times and bad. "The key is to decide on a discipline and stick to it," Stern writes. "Most important, discipline and knowledge are the keys to successful investing."

Experienced investors will enjoy the insights provided by the interviews with these market pros. For novice investors, Stern also devotes four chapters to some basics about personal finance, including the differences between fundamental and technical analyses and how to interpret a balance sheet, set goals, and understand risk. Stern's goal is to help people develop and refine their own investing styles. His "20-point checklist" for picking a winning stock is worth studying by itself. An easy and provocative read, Secrets of the Investment All-Stars just might be your ticket to the hall of fame. --Dan Ring

              Book Description

Why do so many people fail at investing, while a stellar handful consistently make money, year after year? The answer is quite simple. People fail at investing for two very straightforward reasons: 1. they don't know why they are investing, and 2. they don't know how to invest.

Now they have the chance to learn why and how from the best of the best--the big players. Secrets of the Investment All-Stars interviews nine investment luminaries, then translates their wealth of experience, knowledge, and success into a step-by-step investment formula that anyone can follow. * the 10 most important steps to spotting market trends * when to shift their portfolio allocations * what "bottom up" is--and why it's successful * how to use the top-down style of investing for maximum growth, and much more.

The number of individual investors has jumped from forty-three million in 1989 to sixty million in 1996. Now, with the Secrets of the Investment All-Stars available to everyone, that number is sure to climb higher and higher--just like the portfolios of readers who take this advice to heart.

              1 out of 5 stars Surprising Errors.......2001-11-20

I'm surprised at the errors in this book. For instance, in Chapter 5's description of value investing, the author defines "Capitalization Rate," as what is really "Market Capitalization," and then in the Cheat Sheet section says "the higher the capitalization rate, the more risk involved."

It makes you wonder about any advice given in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written Many ERRORS.......2001-03-24

This book, in my opinion, is very poorly written and does not present the theories very accurately. There are tons of errors which I post below:

1.Page 17 regarding indexes. There are two main types, price weighted and value weighted. General Electric would NOT influence the DJIA as much as 3M would. DJIA is price weighted which means it is representative of ONE SHARE from each company. Stocks with higher share prices NOT market caps will influence the DJIA. GE trades at $39 so it will have one of the LEAST influence on the DJIA. However, the S&P500 is value weighted meaning companies which have larger market caps will influence it most. In this case GE will have a large influence but not on the DOW. 2. Page 22. Systematic risk IS NOT diversifiable. UNSYSTEMATIC is. Think of about the term systematic. IT MEANS MOVES SYSTEMATICALLY with the market which is not diversifiable. NONSYSTEMATIC means uncorrelated to the index which is firm specific and is diversifiable.

              3. Page 25 author recommends charting. NUMEROUS academic studies show this is absolutely useless (most forms of technical analysis are).

              4. Page 80 on ALPHA. This is totally wrong. Alpha is the extra return you get above a "fair return" given the asset's risk level (beta). Or for the more sophisticated, alpha is the return above the Capital Asset Pricing Model derived return for an asset.

5.Page 81 on Standard Deviation. This is very very wrong and misleading. Standard deviation, in layman's terms, is simply how much a stock deviates from its past average return on a day to day or month to month etc basis. YOU CANNOT SAY THE MARKET HAS A SD OF 1. THIS IS MISLEADING. The last line is false in regard to SD. MPT does not imply you should accept no more deviation than the market. If you margin stock you can still remain on the capital allocation line and have a higher deviation than the market portfolio and still be entirely efficient as per MPT.

              6. Page 124. Free cash flow is NOT what is left over after current assets pay current liabilities. THAT IS SIMPLY WORKING CAPITAL.

7.Page 213. Again, incorrect information regarding the balance sheet account called land. LAND CANNOT BE REAPPRAISED

              4 out of 5 stars Solid ,useful & interesting.......2001-01-12

Ken Stern interviews 9 eminent investors with very diverse investing styles and perspectives . He covers index investing with John Bogle ,modern portfolio theory with Markovitz, forecasting market trends with Marty Zweig and value investing with Mario Gabelli , to name a few . Seeing all these different approaches drives home the point that investing is an art as well as a science (however imperfect and empiric)___there being the proverbial 1001 ways of skinning a cat ! I noticed that some of the earlier reviewers were a bit dismissive of the experts culled in this book .Well that was prior to the Nasdaq slaughter in the yr 2000 (Nazz down 39% !) I hope that the last year has taught folks who had seen the markets go only skyward that investing is a complex (and fascinating) art and more than just buying and selling the latest fad ! Unless you are the absolute tops as an investor you will take away a useful nugget or two from this book____if nothing else you will realise that there is more than one way of investing successfully and you can fashion your own electic style , based on your temperament and risk tolerance .

1 out of 5 stars another useless book.......2000-04-08

This book was full of interviews with "yesterday's" investment "gurus." Most of the so-called professionals in here haven't been able to beat the market in a long time. Skip this book. It's definitely not worth the money.
